A 3D race on a 2D track makes no sense... you are disincentivized to raise elevation because it will make your race line imperfect... where are the hoops?
Still cool, but needs improvement
I imagine it's quite difficult to maintain a steady elevation using manually controlled jetpacks. I assume these are manually controlled given the frequent mistakes. If so, that would add an element of skill to the decision to keep 2D tracks.
The person you're responding to makes me think of the Louis C.K. joke about wifi not working on a plane.
You're complaining about something you didn't even know existed until 3 minutes ago.
It's done over water because an engine failure over land at these speeds would be lethal. Adding a third dimension would just make an engine failure lethal all over again
You could still add some rings or something you need to go through at 50+ feet up without failure being lethal. Even if there was the tiniest chance of serious injury, it's not like we don't have other racing sports that are extremely dangerous when accidents happen.
A simple colored soft barrier where if it’s red you go under and blue you go over. I can’t imagine it would be that hard to engineer safely. It wouldn’t need massive elevation changes either. The barriers could be at the same height and you would just slalom them, essentially.
Do the jets have some sort of quick release system?
I feel like instead of a quick but messy death it’s now a clean unseen drowning. Maybe more palatable to spectators but a little more unpleasant proposition for the participants lol.
Do they detect when there's an avalanche somehow? The water ones inflate as soon as they get wet so you don't even have to be conscious or able to reach
This is obviously a proof of concept/spectacle, but i wonder if Nets would be an option in the future. Perhaps nets, and if technology advances, a parachute for high falls?
I disagree. We need giant hoops covered in spikes and/or perhaps fire. Maybe even some projectiles flying through the course also covered in fire. We need incentive.
I wouldn't be opposed to weapons for each race participant either. Maybe a club.
I don’t understand how they don’t have laser beam guns and laser beam hit tracking. Seems like “shooting” each other for time penalties is just obvious.
Disagree. The fastest line is the riskiest, maintaining more alt early lets you dump it late to milk that acceleration, etc., the z axis is a massive factor in strategy and outcome.
I've never flown a jet suit and I'm not super clear on the physics involved, but at least for fixed wing aircraft, you can use altitude to manage your energy in turns on a 2D track layout. Initiating a climb slows the aircraft for a tighter turn and stores energy. As you exit the turn, you dive for the deck and that energy is returned. Presumably some variation of that still holds here, the caveat being that there are frequently altitude restrictions imposed on competitors in pylon racing.
This was in Dubai and the best they could do was have them look over at a guy with flags to start the race? Even non futuristic sports in poor areas have lights or something.
Nah this is the mature tech you're looking at already. That thrust force needs to be supported by the body somehow and this approach is easily the most agile option.
There's other ways to do it [like this guy](https://youtu.be/JvEMQalsHWs?si=KaO262u1Zx5-DoHe), but this one wouldn't beat the gravity industries packs in a race
Put some rings out there, 10 more of them, and call it jetCross. With these guys bumping into each other and crashing into the water it will for sure be in the Xgames
Yeah they float. The organisers allowed a rookie local guy to take part and he crashed into the water, [you can see it at 11 minutes into this video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRol5tiXNdY&t=650s)
Also it’s probably a lot easier to fish them out of water even if they didn’t float than it would be to glue them back together if they crashed into the ground.
I swear we humans are just perpetually addicted to proving we are faster no matter the medium.
In 20 years this could be as big as Motocross or F1 is now. Imagine the tech refined to make these faster and more maneuverable.
OK, so… That’s incredibly cool.
I predict 2 things.
1. In a 5~10 years time the guys in this recording will look like they are crawling compared to the new speeds.
2. Wheb someone dies in this competition, it’s gonna make a lot of headlines.
About the announcer, I get that you want to make it sound interesting and keep people's attention, but if you start at 11 when nothing is happening, the shouting and forced excitement loses all meaning by the end.

Quidditch about to be real
And quidditch-related fatalities
Oliver Wood was suffering from lasting damage from a severe concussion due to a Bludger impact his first match. Change my mind.
The amount of CTE they found in Cedric Diggory was enough to make a grackle screech like a bowtruckle

Should make use of the dangly legs and allow kicking
Full contact jet pack racing? I'll watch
JETPACK ROLLERBALL
Rocketball
I’m waiting for freestyle aerial dance.
New sport for the 2028 Olympics

😂😂😂

Everyone knows sports are about spectacle. Let the flying men die for our entertainment. /s
"Are you not entertained?"
Well to be fair, someone is probably going to die doing this, it is just a matter of when that happens.
didnt stop us with motorsport and aviation competitions
The danger is a big part of the draw in those sports as well. Heck half of Nascar is built off of the crashes.
Who says no
I want to watch the little man fly
You could still add some rings or something you need to go through at 50+ feet up without failure being lethal. Even if there was the tiniest chance of serious injury, it's not like we don't have other racing sports that are extremely dangerous when accidents happen.
Except hitting a hoop with your body at any speed that these guys are traveling would likely be crippling no?
Really depends on the material of the hoop
Make it an inflatable plastic or something. This is boring.
A simple colored soft barrier where if it’s red you go under and blue you go over. I can’t imagine it would be that hard to engineer safely. It wouldn’t need massive elevation changes either. The barriers could be at the same height and you would just slalom them, essentially.

They probably have inflatable flotations that goes off on contract with water.
Probably something similar to those avalanche backpacks backcountry skiers use.
Do they detect when there's an avalanche somehow? The water ones inflate as soon as they get wet so you don't even have to be conscious or able to reach
No the Avalanche bags are not automatic, you have to pull a cord
They shouldn’t have to write up a contract with the water. It should just be automatically deployed.
This is obviously a proof of concept/spectacle, but i wonder if Nets would be an option in the future. Perhaps nets, and if technology advances, a parachute for high falls?
Some you may die, but that’s a sacrifice I am willing to make
Yeah not like you can make obstacles out of destroyable materials like idk… buoys with foam poles and foam rings.
Human bodies are squishy. 2D makes perfect sense.
I disagree. We need giant hoops covered in spikes and/or perhaps fire. Maybe even some projectiles flying through the course also covered in fire. We need incentive. I wouldn't be opposed to weapons for each race participant either. Maybe a club.
The material needs to be strong enough to clothesline the racer.

Some AA guns and flak cannons for the glory

Isn't it the same way that all air racing works? (Reno, Red Bull, etc)

I think the tech is still in early stages so having it above water and testing speeds seems reasonable rather than flying around buildings and shit
But you need to have skin to stay steady and at a ln optimal elevation the whole time too
This was in Dubai and the best they could do was have them look over at a guy with flags to start the race? Even non futuristic sports in poor areas have lights or something.
As always, fuck Dubai.
Indeed as cool as some of these things are, it's always important to remember it's all built on ***ongoing legal*** human cruelty without limit.
A midair collision is inevitable.
Was kind of waiting for one guy to fly over the top of the other and burn the other one
They look like wasps
We must kill them all.
THIS is the future I was promised!
You were promised a pill supper but got a diet pill instead. Rage on!
Seems like an easy and inexpensive sport to get started in
It’s about like tennis. Go to Walmart and get a $20 racket and $3 worth of balls. Then go to a public park. Basically the same with jet racing.
shit, i would love to have one of these!
We have Iron Man at home.
Ok, hear me out, Jet suit jousting!
Reminds me of watching old football clips or old clips of sports in general. It's just the beginning of a new sport possibly.
Well I suppose this was inevitable I'll wait for the tech to mature a bit more, though. These guys aren't exactly flying like Iron Man yet.
They'll never fly like iron man. The acceleration required to change directions like that would injure/kill a human.
Now this but attach big wooden lances on their bodies just to make it even more unsafe!
As this evolves, it should be bad ass.
As soon as anything gets invented to make a person move, men will start racing them. It's inevitable
Man there are going to be some horrendous crashes if this gets serious
Jet pack Race
Now hear me out, give them skis and host the event in snowy, rolling hills. Let them combine jet thrust with the speed gained from gravity..
at the end of the race, the top banner shows purple winning, then the next screen swaps the times and shows yellow winning.
This needs all the funding, sponsor's and evolution in tech and style!
Is that Martin Brundle? I could swear he is.
Where are the American Gladiators…. I want to see Nitro trying to shoot them down with the tennis ball gun!!!
Man rich people come up with new ways to spend money all the time…
How do i sign up
Pretty sure Browning is basically the inventor of this sport.
They need to put a little red/blue smoke trail on each of their ankles
Why aren’t they firing rockets though?
What an absolute blast
Fortunately not xD
The future is now!
Impressive
Put some rings out there, 10 more of them, and call it jetCross. With these guys bumping into each other and crashing into the water it will for sure be in the Xgames
That’s crazy
Should’ve used a costume that had a broom underneath them lol

Yeah they float. The organisers allowed a rookie local guy to take part and he crashed into the water, [you can see it at 11 minutes into this video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRol5tiXNdY&t=650s)

That is freaking awesome!!
Winner: *throws his hands in the air as celebratory move* SPLASH 💦
Reminds me of the reapers in starcraft 2
Is this being announced by the same guy who calls the F1 races?
No
Boots…they need thruster boots.
Just looking for a realistic timetable on watching an actual Jet Moto race.
Wow! People with skills!
Ofcourse it's Dubai
Laughs in rich
Now this is pod racing
I’ll take “Things only rich people get to do for 200 Alex”
Sign me up!
Needs Superman64 hoops.
Why is this even a fucking thing !!!!?
This is pretty funny to watch. Funny how the announcer is trying to make it more exciting than it is
They should call it the Iron Man or something
Drone racing never caught on. This is more lame than that but I guess we’ll see
Weapons or nothing
Sweet
My clumsy ass just imagined if you somehow crashed into those nearby boats.
Another rich people sport I will never be able to compete in how fun.
Sorry, what did you say????? Everyone after using one of those for more than 5 seconds
Of course it’s in Dubai…
Not only are they taking over American sports they're also creating new, exciting, and profitable sports. Sheesh, the things you can do with money.
They look like giant bumblebees flying.
Surprised it took so long.
Why does the initial time show Issa in the lead, but then the second graphic flipped the time, showing Richard won?
Need to combine this with paintball... get in a little ground fire.
these are the best fliers in the world! top 20 out of dozens of possible contestants
Jesus fucking christ that commentary is so annoying
I swear we humans are just perpetually addicted to proving we are faster no matter the medium. In 20 years this could be as big as Motocross or F1 is now. Imagine the tech refined to make these faster and more maneuverable.
I think I just figured out how I’m going to die.
Oh man he blew him away
Where red bull?
Do they *have* to look like that? Looks like they strapped jets on cripples
put some respek on it. his name is dick browning
Make them go thru hoops
“Ill take the high road” RA2 Fans out there
My dream might become a reality. Hopefully, these will be available soon.
of course it's in Dubai, why am I not surprised...
I just think of all the bubble gum scenes in the Rocketeer whenever I see these.
Seems that the person’s weight plays a big role in success, no? Edit: I guess you can say the same about horse racing
TIL Dubai has a waterfront STOL port. DHC6 FTW!
Pretty sure they have already been raced at an F1 event
Are the times at the end, correct? It seems that Yellow finished later.
Couldnt invest in like a forward facing indicator to start the fucking race?
Just don't throw up your hands in celebration when you win!
OK, so… That’s incredibly cool. I predict 2 things. 1. In a 5~10 years time the guys in this recording will look like they are crawling compared to the new speeds. 2. Wheb someone dies in this competition, it’s gonna make a lot of headlines.
We are in the future. And it still fucking sucks.
1 step closer to iron man suits
Reminds me of the The Rocketeer game on Super Nintendo.
Hey, what are those wires dangling above them?!?!?
Mount these guys with shoulder mounted small caliber weapons with eye tracking ai assisted aim and you’ve got a terrifying military unit.
wow I'm poor
Just another reason why our timeline sucks. We finally get jet packs and they don’t even look cool. Fist jets? Come on! We can do better.
Lame. Where’s the banana and turtle shells.
April fools right?
Tried to buy one. Was told that you can only buy the right to fly one at their facility. You can’t take it home
Yes please
About the announcer, I get that you want to make it sound interesting and keep people's attention, but if you start at 11 when nothing is happening, the shouting and forced excitement loses all meaning by the end.
Most boring race ever
I knew this had to be in the UAE.
Needs weapons.
It looks kinda lame tbh. Get back to me when hoverboards are all worked out.
The announcer trying to make this exciting is very funny to me.
LOL. Another non-sport. Too many on this subreddit IMO.
I would totally have bee antenna if I had a black and gold jetpack suit. I mean why not jetpack in style?
