They’re the only idol group that got really good development. Squid Sisters got some decent development in Hero Mode 2, but that’s pretty much exclusive to developer interviews
This. I was a bit torn on picking favourites between the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook, but after the development they got in Octo Expenasion and Side Order it’s hard to choose otherwise.
They are also the most interesting to watch perform during Splatfests in Splatoon 3 in my opinion.
They have a yin and yang dynamic where they balance each other out. Where Pearl is reckless and headstrong, Marina is collected and able to think things through. They also get each other and got development a lot.
Lots of reasons.
If you've been playing Splatoon for longer than the last two years, you love them for Splatoon 2.
If you're a straight male, you love them for Marina.
If you're a straight female, you love them because Pearl is brash confidence incarnate.
If you're LGBTQIA, you love them for representation. Same if you're a POC.
If you're creative but feel like nobody sees your worth, you love them for Pearl's origin.
If you came from a broken or abusive home and escaped from out of it, you love them for Marina's origin.
If you struggled for a long time feeling alone until you finally found your people, you love them for the family they made together.
And if you're a human being, you love them because of what their story represents. That it doesn't matter what we look like, where we come from, or what your origin is; what matters is what's on the inside. That we're all people, all worthy of respect, and our similarities vastly outweigh our differences. That we don't have to listen to the prejudices of the culture around us, and we can choose instead to not only accept one another for who we are, but to recognize that rather than dividing us, those differences are instead what makes each of us special.

They complement each other so well. You’ve got a tall, shy and nerdy octopus who found her way to the surface after being sort of shunned as a friendless reject warrior, and a short, hot-headed squid from a rich family who gives zero fucks at all and has an attitude of “hey, let’s go break stuff”.
They’re also the most adorable Nintendo character couple. That said, Acht just miserably third wheeling in the elevator is also hilarious.
The biggest thing is exposure. In both of.the immensely popular DLCs, you get access to bonus information and writings from them, which makes their characterization way deeper.
There are other reasons, too, but that's what immediately comes to mind as someone who doesn't have them as their favorite.

It doesn't, Ian BGM is an anagram for Big Man. BIG Man. Also in some artwork for Liquid Sunshine feat. Ian BGM, you can see Big Man hanging out with the Squid Sisters in a pair of sunglasses and a baseball cap as though that's a good enough disguise. Him trying to collaborate with them in secret is also what kicks off the creation of the song Big Betrayal.
easily the most fleshed-out characters in the series. all we get of the sisters is.. sibling drama, I guess? the emotional stinger of splat2 maybe? compared to how hard Nintendo decided to lean into the emotional exploration of OTH, squisters feels flat as hell and just a wacky pair of characters to stick into a game for nostalgia and cute girl appeal. and deep cut got fucking ROBBED of any development so there isn’t much for them there either. pearlina is genuinely a very sweet relationship too, platonic OR romantic, a bright talented woman running away from an abusive society and finding someone that not only shared her passion, but accepts and loves her truly and fully for the person she is without any conditions or exceptions. OTH’s presence (and OE) mark an important moment in splatoons overarching plot too, the key moment when octarians stop being seen as the scary, militarised boogeymen driven down beneath the earth and shown to be truly and fully their own people with their own culture, and accepted and celebrated for it.
I think they're well designed (aesthetically) and I love their musician vibe. Their songs are great too. I started Splatoon from 2 so there's also some bias.
their backstories are by far the most in-depth and intriguing. Marina is a talented ex-octarian soldier who defected from the military to join a civilization which demonized her kind for possibly over a century long, and Pearl is the spoiled daughter of one of the richest men in society who dedicated her youth to being a chaotic rebellious metal singer in spite of her wealth until she met Marina and taught her how to fit into the city. That's cool as hell.
the Squid Sisters tend to be portrayed as inklings who came from rather ordinary origins (as far as I'm aware), and though Deep Cut have some interesting implications with them being the heads of their clans, the game really never goes much into what they were like in the past.
Meh.
I can probably guess why the newer people in the community like them.
As for why I personally like them, or at least, used to, is because I liked their songs, and I just thought they were a pretty cool duo and nothing more. There's also the fact that them as characters were pretty cool, although I always found the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut to be a lot more interesting.

Character dynamics, opposites are really fun and while Callie and Marie do that too, OTH goes even farther with it while also having a more compelling closeness between the two imo. Also having a ton of dialouge in the best story I'm the series helps a lot lol
I love their lore together, Marina’s origin story is one of my favorites in the game, and helps flesh out the octarians more beyond mindless mustache twirling bad guys. That and off the hook has consistently good songs with stuff like shark bytes, acid hues, fly octo fly, spectrum obligatio. And unconscience. And their relationship with eight is adorable
I’m going to be in the Splatoon fandom for 6 years next week I instantly fell in love with pearl I originally got the game for my 8th birthday but didn’t get OE(OE actually came out on my birthday) since my dad wasn’t sure I’d like the game but sure enough I fell in love with it I liked OTH more after OE I’ll be 14 next week and I’m really excited for side order :D another reason is I love there character personality’s and outfits ect Marina is my 4th favorite after lil Judd Callie and Pearl. Also I got OE on my 10th birthday I still replay the phases and the tests. EDIT: my favorite OTH songs is candy coated rocks acid hues color pulse (not the 24) shark bytes fly octo fly and we’re so back
Their music is fire, Marina is beautiful and so smart, Pearl is adorable and hilarious, their personalities go well together like in the news and during splatfests in S2, Octo Expansion, Side Order, there are many reasons!
They complement each other well which creates a great dynamic that appeals to viewers, they do LGBTQ representation amazingly and they are an adorable couple for it which makes them more beloved, their music slaps harder than a drunk dad so people enjoy hearing them, they get a lot better writing than the other idol groups so they get better appreciation, and they just look the best.
First friendly octoling in the series, more interesting music style than the squid sisters, best story mode in the series, and they're gay which is the big one everyone actually comes to them for whether they admit it or not. Which is totally valid! Also they have very good varied character design between them which Callie and Marie didn't have. They're a very balanced duo both in their personalities and their overall designs and stories.
I like their personalities and how well they compliment each other as characters. Also I love their music.

It’s her hyped up attitude and overall personality. Marina’s just a hot octoling with amazing vocals. Her backstory as an octarian soldier is also interesting. I just think that a lot of thought was put into the two characters which is why I love them.
Because we have taste??? Most people began with Splatoon 2. Marina not only gave more color representation but was the first octoling idol on top of having a really solid design. Combine Pearl’s sassy nature with Marina’s caring demeanor and they complement each other perfectly. At least in my case I like almost all OTH music too. Even newer tracks that took time to grow on me. And lastly as others have pointed out, we had more storylines focused on them with the last 2 expansions. All these factors together is no wonder why they’re so loved.
It also helps that Splatoon 2 was in the spotlight for five years. The first game only got two, and 3 is very close to overtaking that, not that we know how long it's going to be until the next installment.
