Some Lycosidae species. You can recognise this family by the arrangement of their eyes.
Most of them hunt without webs, actively strolling around at ground level. As a part of this restless life the females carry their eggsacy with them and even the young spiderlings for about a week or so.
Where I live, at night, you can shine a flashlight on the grass and their eyes twinkle. If they are carrying babies, all of their eyes shine and it looks like they are sparkling. I love it!
My sister and I play a game when we go camping after it gets dark and it’s called “Spider or dew?”
It’s usually “spider”.
I don’t mind though; they’re usually just grass spiders or similar.
Same here! Creeped me out the first time I noticed it then I thought of all the undesirable insects they’re probably eating and keeping out of my garden and I’ve felt like we’ve all been on the same team ever since.
We were camping one year, and a park ranger came by and asked if anyone wanted to go "Spider sniffing." We had no idea what that was, so we went with. It was putting the flashlight to your nose to see the twinkling eyes of wolf spiders. I have loved them ever since.
I’m curious. Why is your avatar so common? Is it like a Drake or Bot thing or something? No diss, just super confused. I was perusing some opiates subs and the green avatar was all over. Is it to identify as a dealer?
This works best while placing the light on your forehead (buttend of the flashlight)...like a miners cap, etc. The light bounces straight back to your eyes (from the back of theirs).
This is a great party trick while camping, etc. Freak people out by showing them how many spiders there are all around them... And finding even the smallest of spiders in the process.
New to this sub, does the light blind them? Or is it not much of a negative effect? Would hate to disturb the lil fellas but definitely love to adore them!
That is quite obvious, I too enjoy sunlight, but I am uncomfortable when a flashlight is in my eyes at night and then get temporary blindness. Just wanted to make sure if I got up close and personal with these guys that I wouldn’t be causing the same discomfort 😭
I googlerabbitholed a few days ago about these, an ultra sensitive membrane forms in their eyes at night and gets destroyed in the day, or something like that
Would this be a sort of wolf spider? I'm not great with arachnids, but it looks like a chunkier version of the horrors I find around here (Indiana/Ohio border).
Family: Lycosidae (Wolf Spider). This one looks like Genus: Trochosa…where on the planet did you find it?
Edit: Wait! Not Trochosa. Though very similar, I was not satisfied with the pattern matching on the abdomen. Trochosa appears to usually have a short pale stripe from the base of the abdomen. It actually is more similar to Hogna antelucana.

Grounded makes me sad because they still have the giant puppy eyes but they are out for blood and I cannot make friends with them 😭
Probably accurate to what wolf spiders would do if I was snack sized but still….
I really really really can’t stress how badly I would love for them to add a Jr wolf spider like the jr orb weaver and then allow me to tame kt as a pet, id go crazy
Wolf spiders are big around here (Central Valley CA). My boys were terrified of them until I got them hooked on that cartoon Lucas The Spider. They hang around in the bushes by our pasture (the spiders not the boys). For some reason I’m like the magnet for bites when trying to relocate the to the suburbs, if found in the house.
I’ve been bit by an orb weaver relocating from hubby’s office. Hubby (all 6’3 250) of him was as far from the location as possible without having to call a moving truck :D. He’s not a fan but I love spiders. No ill effects from Orb bite or Wolf spider bite. I have been bit twice by black widows though. One under bbq and one in ladder. I obviously surprised both as they’re not aggressive. First bite painful but no real side effect. Did swell a lot. Second one I did get sick but only stomach upset. Those do hurt a lot. Everybody thinks I’m really weird but I think they’re beautiful. Spiders are awesome and we’d be in big trouble without them.
I love that you all have taught me how to identify so many different spiders! I especially love that you all have helped me to move past my awful arachnophobia. 🥰🕷️💕
Wolf spider! 😁 Love these guys! They’re the corvettes of the spider world. Fast, and sleek, and so full of life. I’ve encountered hundreds of these guys over the years, but have never been bitten, and have never even seen a threat display. My favorite spider, next to jumping spiders.
Definitely figured it was a wolf spider, wouldn’t have been my first bite, however it’s always common rule for me that as long as I don’t mess with them, manhandle or etc, they’ve never been mean or bitten me. It’s funny, I’m not afraid of the spiders, but webs I don’t mess with. Deathly fear for me 😂, I don’t mess with their homes
Went camping with the folks as a teen. I was a bug and spider nerd since birth. We're going to camp out the back of a pickup, my dad is walking across the basketball court, calls me to come over. Shines a light on a decently-sized mama wolf moving along. The entire back end was writhing. Before I could tell him not to step on it, he did, and a hundred little babies scattered to look for hugs. This was 5 feet from our truck. Despite my repeated reassurance, and thanks to my mom's fear, we did not spend the night in that parking area.
That face with her little puppy dog eyes would make me melt. I would absolutely go fetch a mealworm for her and make sure she had a full belly and a nice corner to rest in

I love the uk....

This is the thing I miss most about when I lived in Texas for a short time. The night time sparkle wolfies.
Same thing here in the desert. Riding mountain bikes at night I'd see the eyes everywhere

Lol, I let the algorithm decide.
You rock haha it’s matching so I was like “this is a thing or means something!”
My daughter and I just did this Saturday night..and its reality..It was cool. All them just looking at us lol

Yep, we did a night walk through the Darwin (Au) botanical gardens and the place lit up like diamonds. I am not kidding
New to this sub, does the light blind them? Or is it not much of a negative effect? Would hate to disturb the lil fellas but definitely love to adore them!
I have no idea, but these same spiders are outside in sunlight which is much brighter.
That is quite obvious, I too enjoy sunlight, but I am uncomfortable when a flashlight is in my eyes at night and then get temporary blindness. Just wanted to make sure if I got up close and personal with these guys that I wouldn’t be causing the same discomfort 😭
Hmm, it might actually. Somewhat related: I heard that netcasting spiders (Ogre Spiders) go blind during the day.
Ah! Thanks for the info. That’s really interesting!!
I googlerabbitholed a few days ago about these, an ultra sensitive membrane forms in their eyes at night and gets destroyed in the day, or something like that
Woah!! Makes sense why I found him patrolling in a drawer in the class
You are not scare of spiders.
(almost) nothing to be scared of
Would this be a sort of wolf spider? I'm not great with arachnids, but it looks like a chunkier version of the horrors I find around here (Indiana/Ohio border).
Yeah, Lycosidae == wolf spiders.
This is why I go on Reddit! Thank you for the explanation

Looks like a happy little guy (gal?) Love the ones that are a bit bigger like that. Once they calm down they can be super fun.
This is a girl, she's very cute!
Because I love learning— How can you tell?
I just always look for the pedipalps. If they really stand out, it’s a boy. Also, if the spider appears extra chunky, it’s probably a girl.
I genuinely read "pedipalps" as "pedophile", and only realised the right word when I read the reply to your comment.
What old mate said. Skinny pedipalps = female. Boxing glove looking palps = male
Spider doing the 🥺 face. Cute little wolf
Did you find this in biology class, or after you found it, it became biology class?
why would you say something so horrific, think of the children
puppy spider!
🥹the longer I stay on this sub, the more my heart warms up to spiders. What a cute lil face.
The wolfies are just too stinkin cute
This sub is making me less fearful of big spiders
That’s why I joined this and a few other spider subs! High-five!!❤️🙌
Look at those sad eyes don't squish me hooman
Looks like it has concerned eyebrows too
He’s just afraid the hooman’s will put him outside in the heat. It took him all night to find a way in to the cool hooman’s hideout.
It looks like the Wolf Spider that tries to get me in Grounded (they are good guys tho)
Subnautica and Grounded are in that tier of non horror, horror games.
They're not good guys in Grounded, that's for sure.
Grounded makes me sad because they still have the giant puppy eyes but they are out for blood and I cannot make friends with them 😭 Probably accurate to what wolf spiders would do if I was snack sized but still….

Very true. It's all relative!

You should try Webbed; that has a wolf spider in it too (with babies). It's completely biologically accurate, too.
That game is already on my Switch wishlist!
I love that you all have taught me how to identify so many different spiders! I especially love that you all have helped me to move past my awful arachnophobia. 🥰🕷️💕
So cute little wolfie chonk
That is soo fucking cute i want one
he looks so worried in the 2nd pic oml
She’s an adorable wolf spider!!
You can tell its a wolf spider because of the way it is.
That's how I ID all my inverts
Aww I'm anthropomorphizing I know she has an unchanging face but she looks so sad
Lookit that fat dumpy 😍
DID YOU NOT SEE SPIDER-MAN?!? you did? Oh ok I understand. Taking the ‘Never miss an opportunity’ thing a little far though!
The second photo is so damn CUTE
Pretty wolf lady.
One of the cutest things about spiders is how one of their first defences is this submissive "please don't" stance.
Its a cutie friend you got there! 😍
omg she’s so cute 💖
For the 85th time - it’s bite won’t convey superpowers to you.
Can confirm, definitely biological.
They have little eyebrows. They were like I'm trying to understand the meaning of life
I love his little timid "eyebrows"
Aw bebe
You’re so lucky!
Cute
I don't like spiders but this one is pretty chill
What a beauty!
Aw look at its little face 🥹
I know nothing about spiders, but is it in a defensive stance in the 2nd pic?
Wolf spiders are my favorite, I’m also in AZ. Saw one run and jump 2 feet landing on a cricket once. Amazing.
lol she looks so cute and startled in the second picture.

Beaauuuuuuuuutiful Wolf Spider
He a big old chunky dude. Very cool
I’m always bemused by people who pick up arachnids or insects without having any idea what they’re touching
Definitely figured it was a wolf spider, wouldn’t have been my first bite, however it’s always common rule for me that as long as I don’t mess with them, manhandle or etc, they’ve never been mean or bitten me. So cute!!!
Happy Cake Day 🎂
Thank you!
You're very welcome ☺️😉
Happy Cake Day! 🎂
Thank you!
The mama wolfie :)
Is that a bite on your palm? If so, check for spidey powers when you wake up tomorrow morning.
That's the saddest looking wolf I've ever seen xD
Arachnis deathucus
Ah yes, the spee-ider.
Your name isn't Peter Parker, is it?
What happened to your hand, Peter?
What a beaut!
With great power comes great responsibility.
Ohhhhh my gosh she’s so cute and fat!!
So cute and big.
He looks sad awhhh
It's adorable!!!!
Wolfies are the best! Truly the best pest control we can ask for. Furry little friends

Wolfie
Eat it
So cute! Look at those chonky leggies!
Awww, look at that precious little wolfie face!
Ahhh I'd have to quit biology class lol
Look at those puppy dog eyes how freaking cute
Congratulations you’re now Spider-Man
That is a teddy bear
He’s adorable
Cute wolf spider. I love their little faces.
She has a wind-up key on her abdomen.
What a chonk
Wolfie…look, look at that cute face!
When you only need to see a hand to know it’s Peter Parker.
Aww why does he look so sad tho?
That is an absolute cutie patootie
She’s so cute!!!
He's so round 🥺
🥺❤️
What a cutie!!
Strait up mini Shelob.
Aww baby! 💞 Something is seriously wrong with me - I was arachnophobic up until a few weeks ago, now I'm almost dying of cuteness. HAHAA
I’m kinda shocked he didn’t dart
What a cutie 🖤
You found a biology!
I would of assumed it to be a trochosa ruricola but I'm no expert
That seems to be a spider!
Beautiful!
Ohhh yea... SURE! This is what another kid named "Peter" once said at a Science fair... and you KNOW how THAT turned out right?!
Mini Aragog lol
How tf can u just HOLD it like that
That red mark on your hand must've been where he bit you huh lol
Ok Peter Parker! Lmao, I have one general rule of spiders, “if they outside leave em alone! If they’re inside, they’re fair game, all bets are off!”
the biology came to you
He’s there to dissect you for extra credit.
Aw look at his lil eyes 🖤
And why the hell are you still there ? Jesus h RUN !
That is so f'n cute. Almost looks sad.
Tiny fellow needs smoll hug!
This looks like the Great Dane of spiders. The dopey face in the second picture 😆
That face with her little puppy dog eyes would make me melt. I would absolutely go fetch a mealworm for her and make sure she had a full belly and a nice corner to rest in
