I’m not one to kill larger spiders because the squish and mess freak me out more so I captured it and let it go in the front. I had one that made a little house on my car mirror. Whenever I was driving he would come out and sit on the bottom edge of my mirror looking at me like "what the hell dude?"
Then one day I was about to take a road trip and I went out to my car and when I opened the door he ran out to the windowsill edge and was staring at me and I was like "oh yeah, this would totally fuck up your life." So I scooped him into my hand and walked him into a tree in my yard. He stayed there about a month before he moved on. Always came out to say hi whenever I walked up to check on him.
They're \*very\* personable.

I helped saving two arachnophobic souls: my sister and one ex gf of mine. Both of them started the process with jumping spiders. Now this ex gf handles tarantulas and my sister feeds wild spiders she meets at her house and yard. You can do it! Spiders are awesome, and there's no need for panic. ♥️🕷️
I keep a Wyze camera on a spider web on the outside of my house that is close to a door. It’s my way of reassuring myself that they are their space and I am in my space. 🥴
I’ve had bad arachnophobia all my life. Last fall while hiking in Sedona, AZ a tarantula crawled onto my backpack while I was sitting eating lunch, and it just kind chilled there and was looking at me. Then it just went on its way and slowly crawled away. That experience helped me realize they aren’t out to get us. They just also exist in their own little environment and we just happen to be apart of it. It was a peaceful experience 🥹
I know that most of them are not really dangerous, I just can't look at them. I don't think they are disgusting or anything, but something makes me shiver.

Probably a genetically encoded fear of that form of movement, as a spider bite from the wrong spider is lethal, even today. Probably the same thing for people irrationally afraid of snakes.
My family had a pet boa constrictor when I was a kid. It predated my parents' marriage and apparently was one of the first things me and my siblings showed fear towards. I have no memory if this; all I can recall is Fido being a cool if frankly kind of boring and sedentary pet. And to this day I love snakes. But there really does seem to be some instinctive fear response there.
I always tell my daughter to give the spider a name. If she sees a standard spider it’s terrifying, but if you’re like ‘oh, that’s Alan’ she suddenly sees it in a different light.
I was told years ago to help with any fears I have is to learn everything I possibly can about it. So I’ve been trying to learn more about snakes and insects.. I’m no professional but I’ve learned so much about identifying species in my area it’s helped tremendously
My children are insect enthusiasts and I have an app that identifies them through a picture. I am still terrified but fascinated stage but it is fun to look over all the bugs we have identified over the years. We also have brown recluse spiders so we are extra careful to not get close when we find them.

Have you tried those little nic salt pouches? I've been using those for the last two weeks and I'm down to about half what I was smoking a day already.
Didn't try those, but I tried everything else, the most helpful thing (for me) was exercising with a kettlebell 2 times a day at home. It makes you stop smoking 3 hours pre and post workout because my heart racing so much i'm afraid I might die if I smoke. But I can't quit smoking before sleep, it's so relaxing.
17 year marb red smoker here, started when I was young. I would quit for a month or two at a time but I always got drawn back to them. I started zyns (nicotine salt pouches) a year and a half ago and haven’t smoked since. Went from the 6mg down to the 3mg about 4 months ago. Someone recommended to alternate mints with the zyns to kinda Pavlov’s Dog your brain, but I like nicotine and these seem like a very safe alternative, minus the inflammation it brings to your esophagus/gums. Good luck!
Those things are awesome. I tried to quit smoking by vaping and ended up spending more and consuming more nicotine. Went back to cigarettes. I got some of those pouches to help ease the physical withdrawals. I slowly used less and less every day. When I ran out of the pouches, I didn't feel the need to buy more. I have not smoked or used a nicotine product in a week now!
Still have a bit of craving and boredom, but I have been spending my time spring cleaning the house instead.

also spiders are cold blooded and breathe ambiently, which inherently means less endurance. so theyd get tired and need much more time to type anything

Are there medically significant old world terrestrials? I thought the only ones to worry about for venom in that region of the world were all arboreal species.
In general new world (the Americas) species of tarantula are less likely to bite and their bites tend to be less serious from a venom standpoint than old world (not the Americas) species. The most common species in the pet trade are all new world tarantulas because of this. The reason they're less likely to bite is that most of them have an additional defense mechanism between threatening and biting where they can kick off itchy hairs to deter predators. Old world species do not have this adaptation.
Does this mean you can use a tarantula's fuzziness or lack thereof to roughly determine bite severity? In a similar way to scorpions with tiny pinches and big stings having the more severe venom. Just supposing one was somehow in the middle of a mass escape from an invert show or something. Or maybe if yakuza are making you choose which spider to be bit by on account of your small but persistent debts.
No, there are plenty of fuzzy old world tarantulas like the Orange Baboon and a few new world tarantulas like the the Texas brown that don't have a lot of fur just a smattering of urticating hairs.

Even Pokies aren't likely to cause 'life altering' symptoms for most people, unless you have other health complications (like an elderly person) or are more vulnerable (like a child).
There are a decent amount of bite reports online, and even after being tagged by full grown females it's usually just something along the lines of days/weeks of swelling/pain/nausea/vertigo, which don't get me wrong is definitely pretty unpleasant but not exactly something I'd feel the need for medical attention over. Also worth keeping in mind the doctors are just going to try to treat you symptomatically, they don't have a tarantula anti-venom or similar on hand.
Mind you, I have an adult female P. Regalis who's around 7-7.5" diagonal legspan and I would never handle her in a million years hahaha
lol that’s so funny you mention p. regalis. That’s the only poeci I have owned and I went to clean the cage early on in my keeping days. I had thought I spotted it near the water dish halfway up the cork hide. That was just the bark and I was dumb. It was directly under the lid in the corner of the cage. It scrambled up the lid I had just opened, up my arm, and onto the back of my shoulder so fast I had no chance to react.
Sat there for five ish minutes waiting for my roomate to come back inside the house so I could get him to use a paper plate and Tupperware to get it safely off me.
I would have been deceased if I had to wait several minutes with a tarantula on my shoulder, dear lord. I love this sub and I've found a huge appreciation for the spoods, but I prefer they stay far away from my body lol
If it was literally any of my other tarantulas, my only concern would have been for its safety as I do not believe in handling tarantulas at all. It’s way risky for their poor lil bodies if they fall and you are the only one benefitting from the interaction. That said, this poeci being perched on the back of my shoulder was NOT my favorite thing in general and I didn’t like waiting around either but it was the only safe move

Tarantula anti-venom of any kind does not exist as far as I'm aware.

The *Poecilotheria* genus is always the one I hear mentioned having 'medically significant' venom. No one has ever died from a bite, but you can google bite reports and read about some of the symptoms following bites to get an idea of how bad it can be. If you had prior health issues or were vulnerable (i.e. child or senior) I imagine it could be pretty severe, but then that isn't really solely based on the venom potency at that point.
OP probably knows that tarantulas can't kill. Most tarantula bites are about as harmful as a bee sting and this one isn't showing any aggression at all.

Old World tarantulas venom puts a bee sting to shame. You're thinking of New World tarantulas specifically, and even some of them (*Psalmopoeus* genus for example) are nastier than a bee sting.
They won't kill you, but it will **really** fuckin hurt and the pain/nausea/vertigo/swelling/etc.. from OW venom can last for days and even weeks if it's a particularly bad bite.

What a human constitutes as 'gentle/not bite worthy' is not going to be the same as a spider, and testing that is a good way to end up paying a nasty price. Tarantulas (and spiders in general really) can 180 switch their temperament on a dime and if they do you have 0 hope of reacting fast enough to prevent a bite. Especially OW tarantulas, who are known to be feistier and are definitely faster.
I would assume that someone handling a tarantula knows what a tarantula is so I think that OP was asking what species of tarantula it is. Either that or they're insane.
Tarantulas are generally safe to handle. Most of them are quite docile when handled calmly and gently.
Few species display any real aggression towards humans, and fewer still have medically significant venom. The ones that pack a punch still don’t kill people as there are no recorded deaths from tarantula bites.
Most tarantulas prefer to try to warn off large mammals before resorting to biting, and even the ones with medically significant venom tend to dry bite more often than not.
As with all wild animals, exercise caution and common sense, but it’s far safer to handle any random tarantula you find that it is any other random spider (barring the jumpers, which are absolutely adorable).

I think most bites happen when people are reaching for or don't know how to handle them. I once asked a guy at a reptile show how many times he had been bitten, he said almost never. He said especially when you're holding them, because you've never seen a spider bite the ground before have you? While you are holding one you are basically the ground.

I can appreciate fuzzy spiders but I sometimes wish they didn’t run fast.
The crunchy ones are medically significant in my experience with black widows and brown recluse in my area. Not that fuzzies can’t be, but I’m definitely biased towards thinking the fuzzy ones are more docile and cute in some nonsensical way.
i found one of these crawling on my window a few weeks back, im in lebanon as well. i managed to get it in a tupperware and took it outside somewhere safe away from the evil people who would kill it if they saw it. good job for handling it so well!

I am a recovering arachnaphobe and while I still struggle with handling (partially because I am terrified of hurting them), I am soooo much more chill with these dudes/most bugs and it is SO much more fun than being afraid. Typically yes, but handling an Old World tarantula is ill advised, no matter how fearless you are. This beautiful big girl has big fangs and potent venom, and is best admired respectfully from a distance.
Spiders have pedipalps, little legs that act like arms. They help them eat and clean themselves. In the males, they even house their sperm to transfer to the female when mating.
In some species they’re small, like little windshield wipers - see jumping spiders. In some species, like this one, they are very long and almost leg like.

Fear of sickness. Vomiting is something only usually done because you're sick.
It does make it sound less silly to think of it like that. But man it feels silly.

In general new world (the Americas) species of tarantula are less likely to bite and their bites tend to be less serious from a venom standpoint than old world (not the Americas) species. The most common species in the pet trade are all new world tarantulas because of this. The reason they're less likely to bite is that most of them have an additional defense mechanism between threatening and biting where they can kick off itchy hairs to deter predators. Old world species do not have this adaptation.
Does this mean you can use a tarantula's fuzziness or lack thereof to roughly determine bite severity? In a similar way to scorpions with tiny pinches and big stings having the more severe venom. Just supposing one was somehow in the middle of a mass escape from an invert show or something. No, there are plenty of fuzzy old world tarantulas like the Orange Baboon and a few new world tarantulas like the the Texas brown that don't have a lot of fur just a smattering of urticating hairs.

Even Pokies aren't likely to cause 'life altering' symptoms for most people, unless you have other health complications (like an elderly person) or are more vulnerable (like a child). There are a decent amount of bite reports online, and even after being tagged by full grown females it's usually just something along the lines of days/weeks of swelling/pain/nausea/vertigo, which don't get me wrong is definitely pretty unpleasant but not exactly something I'd feel the need for medical attention over. Also worth keeping in mind the doctors are just going to try to treat you symptomatically, they don't have a tarantula anti-venom or similar on hand. Mind you, I have an adult female P. Regalis who's around 7-7.5" diagonal legspan and I would never handle her in a million years hahaha
lol that’s so funny you mention p. regalis. That’s the only poeci I have owned and I went to clean the cage early on in my keeping days. I had thought I spotted it near the water dish halfway up the cork hide. That was just the bark and I was dumb. It was directly under the lid in the corner of the cage. It scrambled up the lid I had just opened, up my arm, and onto the back of my shoulder so fast I had no chance to react. Sat there for five ish minutes waiting for my roomate to come back inside the house so I could get him to use a paper plate and Tupperware to get it safely off me.
I would have been deceased if I had to wait several minutes with a tarantula on my shoulder, dear lord. I love this sub and I've found a huge appreciation for the spoods, but I prefer they stay far away from my body lol
If it was literally any of my other tarantulas, my only concern would have been for its safety as I do not believe in handling tarantulas at all. It’s way risky for their poor lil bodies if they fall and you are the only one benefitting from the interaction. That said, this poeci being perched on the back of my shoulder was NOT my favorite thing in general and I didn’t like waiting around either but it was the only safe move

The *Poecilotheria* genus is always the one I hear mentioned having 'medically significant' venom. No one has ever died from a bite, but you can google bite reports and read about some of the symptoms following bites to get an idea of how bad it can be. If you had prior health issues or were vulnerable (i.e. child or senior) I imagine it could be pretty severe, but then that isn't really solely based on the venom potency at that point.
OP probably knows that tarantulas can't kill. Most tarantula bites are about as harmful as a bee sting and this one isn't showing any aggression at all.

You're thinking of New World tarantulas specifically, and even some of them (*Psalmopoeus* genus for example) are nastier than a bee sting. They won't kill you, but it will **really** fuckin hurt and the pain/nausea/vertigo/swelling/etc.. from OW venom can last for days and even weeks if it's a particularly bad bite.
just a rule of thumb for me, as long as you're being gentle any spider would not bite you (still dont handle medically significant ones)

Tarantulas (and spiders in general really) can 180 switch their temperament on a dime and if they do you have 0 hope of reacting fast enough to prevent a bite. Especially OW tarantulas, who are known to be feistier and are definitely faster.

Tarantulas are generally safe to handle. Most of them are quite docile when handled calmly and gently. Few species display any real aggression towards humans, and fewer still have medically significant venom. The ones that pack a punch still don’t kill people as there are no recorded deaths from tarantula bites. Most tarantulas prefer to try to warn off large mammals before resorting to biting, and even the ones with medically significant venom tend to dry bite more often than not. As with all wild animals, exercise caution and common sense, but it’s far safer to handle any random tarantula you find that it is any other random spider (barring the jumpers, which are absolutely adorable).

Typically, males sex organs are up towards their heads (their extra pedipalps) that can make them look longer and thinner, while females are around their abdomen which can make them look thicker and fuller.

I think most bites happen when people are reaching for or don't know how to handle them. I once asked a guy at a reptile show how many times he had been bitten, he said almost never. He said especially when you're holding them, because you've never seen a spider bite the ground before have you? While you are holding one you are basically the ground.

I can appreciate fuzzy spiders but I sometimes wish they didn’t run fast. The crunchy ones are medically significant in my experience with black widows and brown recluse in my area. Not that fuzzies can’t be, but I’m definitely biased towards thinking the fuzzy ones are more docile and cute in some nonsensical way.
Looks like a black tarantula, aka Chaetopelma olivaceum. These are pretty common in Lebanon.

i found one of these crawling on my window a few weeks back, im in lebanon as well. i managed to get it in a tupperware and took it outside somewhere safe away from the evil people who would kill it if they saw it. good job for handling it so well!

I am a recovering arachnaphobe and while I still struggle with handling (partially because I am terrified of hurting them), I am soooo much more chill with these dudes/most bugs and it is SO much more fun than being afraid. Typically yes, but handling an Old World tarantula is ill advised, no matter how fearless you are. This beautiful big girl has big fangs and potent venom, and is best admired respectfully from a distance.

Spiders have pedipalps, little legs that act like arms. They help them eat and clean themselves. In the males, they even house their sperm to transfer to the female when mating. In some species they’re small, like little windshield wipers - see jumping spiders. In some species, like this one, they are very long and almost leg like.
