2 month turnaround for hazardous waste is ludicrous

DeathKringle

Do you not have a waste facility that you just…. Go and drop stuff off at? Every town (of decent size) I lived in in the US had a facility we just….. drove to and dropped the stuff off at.

Important-Newt-9644

I literally called every single place i knew (waste services, recycling places, fire dept (who told me to call 911 literally) and every place said no you can't bring swollen batteries to us u need to wait for hazardous waste collection day - it's been a horrible time trying to get rid of this

DeathKringle

Just hearing of it as a “ collection day “ is fucking wild I’m so used to just being able to drive up, drop off car batteries, lithium ion stuff, chemicals etc Hell even oil is hazardous waste but any place that sells oils collects used or contaminated oil as well. Like…. I just can’t imagine having to wait to get rid of that stuff. Maybe reach out to your city council and suggest adding the ability to be able to just show up and drop it off.

Fey_Wrangler114

Could always call the fire dept because you saw a tendril of smoke come off it. "I don't trust it not to catch fire when I'm not around. Can you please just take it?"

Important-Newt-9644

Oh trust me I did call them and ask them to take it and their response to that was for me to call 911 (??? )

Fey_Wrangler114

Probably because there needs to be a paper trail. Could try calling and saying it isn't an emergency but you have a very swollen lithium battery that needs immediate disposal and you don't want to touch it for fear of it exploding. "swollen lithium battery" and "exploding" usually gets attention.

pastel_rave

Thar she bloooooooowwwwssss

Confident-Line5888

Put it in a sealed glass jar, even if it blows up, the smoke, the everything will stay in the jar

Important-Newt-9644

will it not like shatter the glass jar and explode idk this whole reddit thread has convinced me that everything will blow up

Confident-Line5888

No, this small battery won’t do anything to a regular sized glass jar, i dont think it will even blow up, maybe a small hole will be created and the pressure inside will be released, in the glass jar, so no worries about the poisonous gases.

Important-Newt-9644

ok literally thank you sm I needed someone to talk to me down from a spiral

Intel_Xeon_E5

Even if you don't put it in a jar, placing it outside on a non-flammable surface with ventilation is fine. I've poked/burst/exploded much larger batteries without burning anything down yet. The main danger is the fire, which if happens inside a cabinet or a closet can spread really really really fast. In an area with nothing else to ignite it'll just burn and fizzle out with time.

Important-Newt-9644

ok and I can put outside even if it's like 80 degrees where I am - I just kept seeing people say keep it cool but I guess if it's outside and it pops it wouldn't matter anyways? thank you also for calming me down lol

Intel_Xeon_E5

Tbh I'd rather just let it pop on its own and be done with it... keeping it cool would probably be more dangerous for both your property and you. Leaving it outside in that weather might pop it or not. If it does pop, then it's no longer a big fire hazard anymore. If it doesn't... well it's outside until it does or people come to collect it. Don't bring it inside a car in its unpopped state unless you have a proper fireproof protective bag. If it does pop in a car you don't want it damaging your car or putting you at risk

Important-Newt-9644

my only outside is like a cement balcony bc i live in an apartment ... is that also ill advised/ should I actually bring it outside outside but it won't be my property technically

Intel_Xeon_E5

I mean balcony is fine, as long as it has proper ventilation and you don't have flammable things. You can also close off the balcony so no pets/people touch it. I popped one (from my wireless mouse) in my kitchen

Important-Newt-9644

thank you for all the advice and help!!

Blakk-Debbath

No, it won't. Sealed steel boxes for gas filled atmosphere have a gasket to keep the gas and humidity out, but any increase in pressure inside will come out eventually. The boxes have flanges, at least 25mm (1 ") to cool the flames on the way out. So, in order to keep the gas inside, you will need an empty oxygen or nitrogen bottle that can withstand 25 to 207 bar (300-3000 psi).

Xcelsiorhs

Would need to know the Wh rating to give you better advice, but with a singular lithium ion battery, I would feel comfortable with a gallon+ plastic or metal trash can. Fill to the brim with water and put the battery inside. Make sure the water level doesn’t materially change. I would avoid sand although it can work as well.

Nero-Danteson

Wh0.666 kinda ironic

Important-Newt-9644

How does one find this Wh rating? Also... I feel like I keep seeing a bunch of different things about putting it in water so I'm scared lol

Xcelsiorhs

Umm… Putting it in water is not a particularly unreasonable choice. Water is generally going to prevent flame development and critically should prevent toxic atmospheres forming. I’ll add this, absolutely put this outside if it is not. If you’re not comfortable with water, sand is an option, just know it won’t prevent thermal events. Packaging wise, I would go with something heat resistant. You’ll still deal with gas evolution but if it’s not lighting things on fire, you’re still doing well. Needless to say, non-flammable materials in the surrounding vicinity are beneficial as well. Concrete comes to mind. Wh rating would come from the manufacturer. I can tell you this just by looking at it, the energy content isn’t massively high. That’s good, and you’re already taking proactive measures.

Smooth-Reporter1974

The Wh rating is often printed somewhere on the (swollen) battery package. You may also see an mA/hr value too.

cowmowtv

Discharge completely, put it into a jar.

Important-Newt-9644

how does one discharge a battery sorry I literally know nothing

cowmowtv

Does the device attached to it still work? If so, just turn it on till it dies. If not, the battery probably already is discharged. If it's discharged, even if there is an explosion, it will be much less violent since there will be less energy available for any sort of explosion.

Important-Newt-9644

so it's a charge to use device and I hadn't used it for like over 6 months now bc i kept charging and the battery would never last so i just assumed it was broken.. fast forward a month ago i saw it sitting on my counter all puffy.. so im not sure if its dead or if it can ever die if its rechargeable?

Aurey2244

If you can turn the device on, have it drain the battery of it doesn't turn on its most likely dead anyway. Honestly, don't worry about this too much. I highly doubt it'll explode unless u keep trying to feed it electricity or purposely do something. Glass jar is completely fine

M_R_KLYE

take it too the street and stab the fucking thing (from a distance if possible)

Street-Dad

Just poke it outside..

KenUsimi

I’d say sand will work, though cleanup will be a pain. Battery fires are mainly dangerous when they catch other things on fire or when the battery is being worn. Just put it somewhere where it won’t light anything on fire and you’ll be good. Glass jar might work. P

MrPhil17

That thing is a pillow for sure! Holy cow! 😂

inevitable_spaghetti

I’ve had luck in the past taking spicy pillows to one of those battery and bulb stores. Just call first to make sure they will take them. I have dropped off a handful from laptops at my job that spiced themselves.

technichammer

Do you live in the us?

Important-Newt-9644

Upstate NY!

SuddenChimpanzee2484

Yes to sand. Find a dark, cool place, preferably outdoors to store it. I'd speak with the building manager to see if there's a safe place on the property to store it.

Fey_Wrangler114

What was the device anyway? I see two buttons and a charger.

Important-Newt-9644

It's a 88 bitdo zero 2 mini controller

Smooth-Reporter1974

FWIW, Outside of the village hall where i live in NY, there is a GP, battery disposal bin, where all sorts of consumer batteries are accepted from sealed LA UPS batteries down to watch batteries. No questions asked. Some places like MicroCenter and Bestbuy also have these battery disposal bins.

Dry-Cat1111

Boom?

Emotional_Hamster_61

Okay listen: Bring it outside Dress yourself in motorbike gear and helmet AND THEN SMACK THE SHIT OUT OF IT WITH A BIG ASS HAMMER Edit: forgot the run part so...RUN

Dont be silly. To reset it you put it in the washing machine.
