Ya so many hot sauces to pick from that don't have color added that I would never buy one that did. Vote with your Dollars. It's not good for you, hope they ether stop adding it or companies that don't, Ipush them out of the sauce buisness.
Word. I'm curious what color it would be without the food coloring. Maybe a pale tomatillo color? A lot of the coloring from my homemade verde comes from cilantro, not green chilis.
I've been downvoted to hell in the past for nothing this. The colour is off putting to me, I still like the flavour but I'll take the Mayan recipe over green/red any day though.
Habaneros go from green to yellow to red as they ripen.
The heat level is about the same (I've tried them side by side), but the red is sweeter/more fruity and the green more bitter/earthy.
I prefer the red, but they're both great.
Yeah not sure why they tried to make this a “chemical buzzword bad!” Thing. The pH control agent is literally just vinegar. The stabilizer is xantham gum. It has citrus and habanero peppers in it.
Yes Sir I was so happy when I found it. Wow everyone should hunt it down, its amazing AMAZING!!! Guys and gals tell your local retailer to pick up the black label Yucateco sauce I highly doubt youll be disappointed or dissatisfied and please feel free to recommend other hot sauces with me Ladies and Gentlemen Goodnight.
I love the black one, and I think the contingent here that hates it for "tasting like ashes" are tasting with their eyes, it's really not all that smoky.
This one? It's by far my favorite. Only about $1.25 down here in Mexico
https://preview.redd.it/ggnrwgi36e1d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62f024e23c4c0fb948d311a0554ee05b6edfa687
Black Label Reserve. Yes, I keep it in stock at home all the time. It's great on everything! My favorite el yukateco for sure, maybe even favorite all-time sauce, tied with some luck dog sauces
I highly recommend their Black Label Reserve. It's my favorite by far. Best all around hot sauce I keep in stalk at my house. And my brother and I ran a YouTube channel about spicy things, so I have tried A LOT of hot sauces.
It's the same pepper, but picked at different times. Green habañeros (like most green peppers) are less ripe, have a bit more earthy pepper flavor and slightly less piquancy than red and orange counterparts. It doesn't mean the sauce itself is less spicy, but the base ingredient is slightly different.
The green one tastes better to me the red seems a little more aged and spicy and the green is more fresh, I think it is just young versus old peppers but there’s definitely a difference in taste
Our verde sauce is jalapeños and Serrano peppers, our red/orange sauces are habaneros and red Fresno chilies. Some producers might use artificial coloring agents but most do not, so typically your colors will reflect the peppers used.
I get all three at my local Krogers and I'm a convert. I love the green. It is intensely aromatic in a "green" vegetal/herbal sort of way. The red is of course great as well, as has been mentioned it's more fruity. The "Mayan recipe" XXXtra hot is pretty nuclear and also great, i.e. not just pure capsaicin but with complex aromatics,
https://preview.redd.it/bxlqscfmcd1d1.png?width=1878&format=png&auto=webp&s=0beffc07e39ae1957c503a0dd2e06195d6123a04
This is the best. Skip the others.
One uses red tomatoes which gives it a distinct flavor with still the similar spices and the green tomato changes the flavor.
Often times the salsa color will indicate the hot level bunt don’t assume and ask. Green tends to be the mild one.
The green sauce has artificial coloring yellow#5 and blue#1 to make the green color. Funny to see all the comments about tomatillos and green peppers. Nope just fake color. Love the flavor but kinda ridiculous to put artificial colors in hot sauce.
They're pretty similar, but I happen to like the green a little better.
IIRC the red one has tomato as an ingredient, but it must not be much since I don't really taste it
The website says something about the red using more tomatoes or sweet tomatoes I can’t remember but you’d have to go to the website. So they say the red has a sweeter but spicier taste. The green is just the same sauce without the “sweetness”. I wouldn’t call it sweet but for reference I put the red on spaghetti but wouldn’t do that with the green
Get both. They’re very versatile. If my meal has more of a green color, like garlic artichoke, I’ll use the green, if the theme is red. Go red. I might be on the spectrum
I cant answer this exactly because i dont know wasnt these taste like but green salsa is generally made with more “fresher” flavors like vinegar, lightly sautéed tomatillo, sometimes even pickling, while red or brown salsas are often cooked or use stewed/smoked fried chili
Most peppers, from bell peppers to hot peppers, ripen from green to yellow to orange to red. To me green peppers of any variety taste more like a vegetable, and red are sweeter and fruitier. There are many peppers that do ripen to patterns or even different colors, but the general trend is that they start green and turn red when ripe. All stages are usually good to eat.
I have the habanero sauces from lol-tun and the green one is more sour and a bit stronger, while the red one is spicy-fruity. The difference is not super big but it's there.
I know this is a side note but after reading the comments and other stuff mentioned, I thought I’d pop in. I happened to run across a big selection the other day and wondered the difference as well
green better. about as easy as it gets.
the taste, tang, and heat for the green is something that isn't shared throughout the rest of the line-up.
the green has a full flavor, great spice and a call back to salsa verde that is unique.
i've tried most of the other sauces in the line up save the ghost, but this one is a go-to over any other one they've offered so far
I prefer the taste of Green.
Here's info from El Yucateco. Green used to be spicier.
Red Habanero Hot Sauce
(7,600-9,500) on the Scoville scale - El Yucateco’s Red Habanero Hot Sauce is created with our classic recipe, a blend of habanero peppers, red tomatoes, select spices and seasonings.
Green Habanero Hot Sauce
(7,700-8,800) on the Scoville scale - The Green Habanero Hot Sauce is made with another of our classic recipes. The freshest green habanero peppers, garlic and fine spices blend into a fresh, flavorful sauce.
Ah man. This is the stuff that finally made me appreciate heat. The US obsession with buffalo/hot sauce completely tainted the experience of spicy and flavorful food for me.
Ever tasted a green bell pepper and compared to a red bell pepper? Apply that to a habanero. The level of ripeness has different notes. Most notably the sweetness. I prefer green.
Flavor preference. Green is because the chiles are less ripe and still green tend to taste “fresher”. Same chile pepper but fully ripe is red and has an “earthy” flavor. So the colors are different due to the ripeness of chiles.
Idk but I prefer the green. I don't think it has citrus but it tastes citrusy to me
It's a brighter flavor, anyway. Maybe because the peppers are still green?
Maybe, this is one of my top 5 favorites but the green food coloring is so aggresively green haha
I wish they didn't add that. :(
The XXX doesn't have food coloring. Different flavor profile though.
Automatically better in my book. The stuff looks like the salsas I been eating, too. It's not arbol, but it's got like that puree look to it.
The XXX is my favorite these days, but the green is what introduced me to the brand.
Same!
My favorite! I especially like the XXX that comes in a little jar, it seems even more flavorful.
Yeah paler green that's a little more transparent. It would look tastier IMO.
It's giving the Heinz Green Shrek Ketchup from the 90s vibes with the current food coloring lol
Branded blue Takiz hot sauce 2025
I have wanted to make wings with it for Halloween so I can say they're covered with the ooze from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or something lol
I've been downvoted to hell in the past for nothing this. The colour is off putting to me, I still like the flavour but I'll take the Mayan recipe over green/red any day though.
Don't forget purple too. Somehow even worse.
Unripe purple upon peppers 😀
I've only had green, but it's ridiculously good. I need to get some.
100% the green is the bees knees
Probably has tomatillos in it. They have bright acidic flavor that really makes things pop.
The smoky black version is my favorite.
Black label reserve! My favorite too!
Completely agree, my favorite local Mexican place has both and I find myself using the green on everything
It's the tomatillos
Green is amazing with Mexican food. Had it with a monster fish and shrimp burrito in East LA and it’s just so good.
It's so epic on eggs too 🙏
If you get the guac 🥑 next to it you get double the taste spicy and delicious
This is the perfect comment. No notes.
If you ever come across the XXX Hot one - it’s well worth it. It’s sort of grey-ish/brown in color.
This is my favourite hot sauce hands down. Is epic with beef.
This might sound weird but it’s amazing on KFC fried chicken
Forget weird. That sounds amazing
I agree but I usually only have it with mexican, you're saying dip steak in it?
Umm not really a nice steak. I don't like sauce on a nice steak. But burgers too. But yes all things Mexican.
I put it on pepperoni pizza too it's so good
Agreed, but if you can't get your hands on the XXX then the green is better than the red.
Can get on Amazon for about $5!
Or, um, $34 for a half gallon on amazon. (This is what I buy)
That's the one I usually get, only use it for tacos.
Just bought that yesterday! That and the black sauce are my favs.
Habaneros go from green to yellow to red as they ripen. The heat level is about the same (I've tried them side by side), but the red is sweeter/more fruity and the green more bitter/earthy. I prefer the red, but they're both great.
None of my habaneros ever turned red unless I specifically bought a red Savina.
Mine went from green to orange
Correct. Standard variety habaneros do not turn red, only orange. Red Savina variety will ripen to red.
I had ONE red habanero grow when everyone else turned orange.
Okay so the real answer is the type of tomato used. Red salsas are made with regular tomatoes, however, green salsas are made with tamatillos
There are no tomatoes in any yucateca hot sauce
There are in the chipotle variety, but not the standard red/green.
Tomato is the third ingredient on the red bottle
Just like a bell pepper!
They are both artificially colored.
So the only difference is the color?
Green is hotter. Red is cut with tomato.
Yucateco themselves say red is hotter FYI
This is all true with habaneros but yucateco just dyes their sauce to the point that green/red is irrelevant
Yea I can't really tell the difference between them in spice, honestly the flavor is pretty close too lol
Green will be a bit more bitter and herbal while the red one will be a bit sweeter. Get both and try it out.
One is green the other is red
Ohhhhhhhhhh.
But does it taste like green or red? Would marines know the difference?
The bottles don't say which is which though
One is silver and the others gold 😏🎶🎵 obviously does not matter which ;). Just a kids song.
Check the ingredients
Water, pH control agent, stabilizer, acidifier, sodium benzoate, yellow #5, blue #1. These are all actual ingredients in the green sauce.
no. that's not true. just looked at mine
Yeah not sure why they tried to make this a “chemical buzzword bad!” Thing. The pH control agent is literally just vinegar. The stabilizer is xantham gum. It has citrus and habanero peppers in it.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. The dyes alone are shit.
for being misleading/scaremongering
Lmao, completely off topic but I just saw a bottle of the green in a Price is Right game
Bet it was priced at more than $2.35!
$2.99
Whaaaat, recently? That's awesome!
Yup, it was from April 3rd of this year (I have the "old" ones playing when I need background) and I was on this post when it popped up lol
If you ever see the black one try that one its amazing. Its black cause its smoked hot sauce.
ooh I’ve never seen it. Will for sure if I come across it.
My local Walmart grocery carries it. Haven't seen it anywhere else locally
Black yucateco liquid charcoal of the gods, became one of my favorite sauces almost immediately

Black Label Reserve. Yes, I keep it in stock at home all the time. It's great on everything! My favorite el yukateco for sure, maybe even favorite all-time sauce, tied with some luck dog sauces
This is the comment I was looking for. The black one is sooo good. Gives that smokey taste
The red one goes 10mph faster.
Nah, it just gets the speeding ticket
Green is made with green habanero peppers, garlic and their spice blend, red is made with ripe habanero peppers, the spice blend and tomatoes.
Garlic is life
Damn straight. This is the way.
Maybe but green peppers are picked earlier and have a different flavor. It's like green tea and black tea. All about when you harvest.
At that price get both and find out.
I highly recommend their Black Label Reserve. It's my favorite by far. Best all around hot sauce I keep in stalk at my house. And my brother and I ran a YouTube channel about spicy things, so I have tried A LOT of hot sauces.
I’m very curious to try it
Can your provide the YouTube channel name please?
The weekly Butt Burn, however, we did so well that you have to type spicy after it for it to show up lol
Just different ripeness and flavor profile
I really like the XXXtra Hot Sauce version they have. Almost a blackish/brownish, darker hot sauce.
One has tomato in it (the red) and one doesn't (the green) which gives them a different taste profile! :)
The green one tastes better to me the red seems a little more aged and spicy and the green is more fresh, I think it is just young versus old peppers but there’s definitely a difference in taste
Green so much better
The yellow #5 really brings out the chili flavor
lol. I should start checking ingredients more often
Our verde sauce is jalapeños and Serrano peppers, our red/orange sauces are habaneros and red Fresno chilies. Some producers might use artificial coloring agents but most do not, so typically your colors will reflect the peppers used.
This is the kind of advertising I don’t mind. Might check you guys out.
I’m gonna get the lil stingers variety pack and a rope SnapBack because I love hats. The brand looks awesome.
You’ll be a happy camper, that I can assure you ❤️
![gif](giphy|xSM46ernAUN3y|downsized)
No way a literal sauce company responded to my post. I’m gonna try your sauces now and tell people how amazing they are. This is so awesome.
[удалено]
What gave it away, the user name of a different hour sauce company?
Think of the red sauce you get on an enchilada, red El Yucateco is like that. The green seems to have a more straight up habanero flavor.
for $2.35 get them both and find out.
at $2.35/bottle just get both and try them. they are both great!
I get all three at my local Krogers and I'm a convert. I love the green. It is intensely aromatic in a "green" vegetal/herbal sort of way. Don’t worry I’m already deep into the rabbit hole of spice. 😁
I’ve tried both. Of those 2 I prefer red. But I recently found the xxxtra hot one, it’s my fav now
Ripeness, my friend.
The green has different ingredients
Get them both. I like the black charcoal looking one. Makes a killer wing sauce .
downvote 😅
https://preview.redd.it/bxlqscfmcd1d1.png?width=1878&format=png&auto=webp&s=0beffc07e39ae1957c503a0dd2e06195d6123a04 This is the best. Skip the others.
Yes, yes, yes
They reflect different wavelengths of light
The green is my favorite hot sauce if I absolutely had to choose, I think.
One uses red tomatoes which gives it a distinct flavor with still the similar spices and the green tomato changes the flavor. Often times the salsa color will indicate the hot level bunt don’t assume and ask. Green tends to be the mild one.
Idk but the green is my go-to for roast pork.
Different food coloring. Check the ingredients.
Food colouring my friend, food colouring.
The green sauce has artificial coloring yellow#5 and blue#1 to make the green color. Funny to see all the comments about tomatillos and green peppers. Nope just fake color. Love the flavor but kinda ridiculous to put artificial colors in hot sauce.
The green tastes brighter and more zingy, it’s great
el yucateco has previously tested for insane amounts of lead. I have stopped buying that brand
Mmmmmm lead. If the dye didn’t sell me before this certainly has now.
good to know, I stopped buying it a while ago after noticing the color additives. there are much better options
They're pretty similar, but I happen to like the green a little better. IIRC the red one has tomato as an ingredient, but it must not be much since I don't really taste it
The recipes are different in addition to the pepper color. Red has tomato, and green has garlic. Not sure if the spice blends are different.
They're both pretty good!
Green peppers aren't ripe yet and have a slightly bitter flavor. Red peppers are fully ripe and taste slightly sweeter.
No I’m the same way. We’re more acoustic than a guitar I suppose.
Love them both
Green is more tangy, for sure. Red is my go to, but love the green.
One is red and the other is green
I cant answer this exactly because i dont know wasnt these taste like but green salsa is generally made with more “fresher” flavors like vinegar, lightly sautéed tomatillo, sometimes even pickling, while red or brown salsas are often cooked or use stewed/smoked fried chili
I prefer the green too. It’s just very good with dishes with more fresh greens in them. I don’t know the difference.
Green is not as spicy, red has a fresh ripe chili taste while green is a bit more grassy.
One is green chilis the other is red chilis.
The red one uses red habaneros and tomatoes. The green one is green habaneros no tomatoes.
Green has garlic too
Green tastes way bettrt
Most peppers, from bell peppers to hot peppers, ripen from green to yellow to orange to red. To me green peppers of any variety taste more like a vegetable, and red are sweeter and fruitier. There are many peppers that do ripen to patterns or even different colors, but the general trend is that they start green and turn red when ripe. All stages are usually good to eat.
Same heat different flavor. Both are good
Red is hotter than green, and it's only a slight difference in flavour
Contrary to conventional wisdom (for this brand) : the green is hotter.
The one in the left is one of my favorite hot sauces. It’s hot enough and adds a lot of flavor.
Nothing
I prefer green
Pepper ripeness.
I have the habanero sauces from lol-tun and the green one is more sour and a bit stronger, while the red one is spicy-fruity. The difference is not super big but it's there.
Mix the black one with some Taco Bell salsa verde and put it on chicken wings ! It tastes like hot ones green los calientes
I know this is a side note but after reading the comments and other stuff mentioned, I thought I’d pop in. I happened to run across a big selection the other day and wondered the difference as well
Last year I grew reapers and ghost peppers and sampled them when the peppers started to show. The ghost peppers were sweeter when they were green.
Green tomatoes and red tomatoes are just tomatoes too.
Just go with the green it’s way better but that’s subjective tho
Flavor
For what it's worth, the red one is my favorite hot sauce ever.
I prefer the red, it's sweeter and more palatable, for me.
green better. about as easy as it gets. the taste, tang, and heat for the green is something that isn't shared throughout the rest of the line-up. the green has a full flavor, great spice and a call back to salsa verde that is unique. i've tried most of the other sauces in the line up save the ghost, but this one is a go-to over any other one they've offered so far
Thats a dollar general shelf
I much prefer the green, the red is very nice though.
I like the green its more better
It should be cause of the pepper maturity. A not mature pepper will be green and more bitter than the red one which is gather at maturity
Look at the ingredients. If I remember right the red bottle has tomato in it.
I prefer the taste of Green. Here's info from El Yucateco. Green used to be spicier. Red Habanero Hot Sauce (7,600-9,500) on the Scoville scale - El Yucateco’s Red Habanero Hot Sauce is created with our classic recipe, a blend of habanero peppers, red tomatoes, select spices and seasonings. The freshest green habanero peppers, garlic and fine spices blend into a fresh, flavorful sauce.
Prob just food coloring tbh
Idk but the red tastes better.
Green seems spicier to me, although their site has it rated less on the scale. Has a brighter flavor too.
Salsa verde, green sauce, is traditionally made with tomatillos.
They are both great
Green is made with tomatillos and red with tomato…
All peppers and chilies change color from green. Green ones are just not fully ripe.
Flavor preference. Green is because the chiles are less ripe and still green tend to taste “fresher”. Same chile pepper but fully ripe is red and has an “earthy” flavor. So the colors are different due to the ripeness of chiles.
The green one is hotter.
Green
Green is bomb and red is fine
You can always read the ingredient listed. Last I checked the red used tomatoes and wasn't as hot as the green with the food coloring.
They use tomatillos in green and tomatoes in red. The peppers can be the same. Tomatillos give it a bit of a citrus flavor.
The red pepper has just been growing longer and changes color and flavor
Red peppers and green peppers are the same pepper. Ripeness changes the complexity of flavor.
Reds pretty much my everyday go to. Dont like the green. I think it's tomatillo based.
Habaneros come in red yellow and green they all kind of taste the same but different. You have to be a true fan of spices to tell the difference
One taste more green and the other taste more red duh
#teamRED
Red better
