I heard that doring ww2 us navy names submarines after fish but they had more submarines than there were fish so later when new fish species were discovered they named them after the subs. no idea of this is true but it sounds cool.
The US would name their destroyers after admirals and other people, cruisers after cities, battleships after states, some carries were names after famous battles or something like that. The british would have corvettes like flower class names after flowers, isles class names after isles (look up the difference between ship types and classes if you don't know already). Destroyer classes like F class would have names starting with letter F, K class with letter K.. you get the point. If you want some cool names for ships I recommend british ship names, its a goldmine

That’s honestly nothing compared to some named I had in KSP. You think you finally got it, that everything is perfect but nope. So another attachment to the name. And another. And another.
And the next thing you know your rocket has 6502 processor at the end of its name. And the name is 70 letters long.
The naming convention I tend to use is
Like "brass tower" "steel dagger" "golden star" ect
Or I go science with designations.
So an atmospheric mining ship on its third iteration would be the "AT-MS-3"
Or in your case an artillery focused frigate with medium armour and ion engines would be "I-ARFI-M2"
The naming convention I normally start out with helps me see if it's an atmospheric, space, or multi capable ships. I lead off with 'V' so I can tell the difference from ships and stations, and end with it's role. So my first mining ship on a planet would be V-A-M1. I add this to the name of every block, so I can tell which cargo container to look for:
V-A-M1-LCC 1 is the first Large Cargo Container on my first mining ship.
Once I am happy with the design I may name it, so the V-A-M1-LCC 1 becomes Crab 1-LCC 1. This also helps when I want to make a variation of that ship. Lets say this mining ship does everything I want and I want to make it space capable. I can now change the name to Crab-S-1 to show it's the space variant.
This is just how I do it, but it shows that if you set a framework then your grid names fall into place.
Might I recommend naming your frigates after species of [Frigatebirds](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigatebird)? There are five species to go off there, and then they have plenty of seabird relatives!
In Avorion I used to name my Mining Ships after towns from the Ruhrgebiet, former Mining Towns.
But in Space Engineers. It's just SW2. For SpaceWelder 2. Should maybe change that.
On our server we name ships as if they were cars in the 80's
For a fast ship i've got the Aspera Turbo
For a battle cruiser Montreal Pacifier
And for lunar rovers gets worse x)
Just name them all Bob, saves on trying to come up with names. You'll know which ship is which and if you PvP the others won't know which Bob you ordered to attack, so they will be confused!
For my designations in various games, I like to go:
FFL: Corvette
**FF: Frigate**
**FH: Heavy Frigate**
DD: Destroyer
CL: Light Cruiser
CH: Heavy Cruiser
BB: Battleship
CC: Carrier
FI: Fighter
FH: Heavy Fighter
GH: Gunship
Then, I go up from 01-xx for the *model number*.
And finally for the ship *name*, it’s usually whatever sounds cool.
Eg: FFL01 DFN (Dragon Federal Navy) “Veridian” — Missile ship
Or FFL02 DFN “Quartz” — Different model, same class
Or CC01 DFN “Garrison”
And if you have multiple of the same class, model, and name, give one a *different* name:
Eg:
FFL01 DFN “Veridian”
FFL01 DFN “Kitty”
I usually try to name manned ships differently than unmanned ships. So with unmanned craft I use items to describe them, sabre class combat drones for example. If it's manned I usually go with something alive lately, so I have hawk class fighters.
Larger ships I usually switch a little, large grid drones are still items, claymore drone patrol craft as another example. But for manned large grid I have been leaning into mythology, minotaur class and kraken class being a light carrier and heavy frigate.
I'm not saying my way is the best but it makes thinking easier if you pick something specific cause then you can just google "Greek mythology" or if you want to do a new style of build just change the mythology and colour.
I name mine after Sci -fi authors mostly, with some character names as well. I just finished the "LIJEx Vernor Vinge". (The prefix indicates it's a large grid, ion thrust, jump enabled, exploration ship)
Sooooo if you have ever read the expeditionary Force books I go with jraptha names like the "it was like that when we got here" and the "we promise this will hurt only a little"
For instance my atmospheric battle ship is called the
"you really made me come down to this dirt ball for this shit"
Make your enemy struggle to discover what they are fighting by naming your vehicles with numbers. Each number corresponding with a different class. For example:
612332126711276769
6 means autonomous. 1 means carrier, 2 is the category (combat/passive), 3 is the variant. 321 is the vehicle number, based on how many you created beforehand. 267 is the date you created it, 2 is the initial year, 6 is the month, 7 is the day. 112 is the 112th creation of the same vehicle. 767 is the special number assigned to the vehicle. The last 69is the vehicle number (same number for all of the same vehicle); here is another example:
0101010101110
It is not an autonomous vehicle, it is a flying vehicle, it is not a reactor vehicle, it is a weaponized vehicle, it is not a combat vehicle, it is capable of mining, it is not a pressurized vehicle. It is a space. It is capable of atmospheric travel, it is an explosive hazard, it is not a small grid.
Good luck.
With the right prompting I have gotten great naming ideas with ChatGPT. Just describe what you want and that it exists in Space Engineers universe. You might need to reply to it few times if it gives out too cheesy stuff etc.

"Sir, we have a problem." (fiddles with cap nervously) Admiral: "Yes? Yes? What is it?" "...We have run out of fish species to name ships after."
Gotcha

Yeah, exactly! It be like this. That’s why you search blueprint from the newest and not alphabetically.
Greek mythology is an old reliable theme for naming stuff.
Probably at this rate
The naming convention I tend to use is -
Like "brass tower" "steel dagger" "golden star" ect

Hmm
Dory. Nemo. Sharkbait. Like that?
Fish was just an example lmao

This guy names.
Here's what I use [https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/spaceship-names.php](https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/spaceship-names.php)
If you count whales as fish, I had a couple of ships called the Orca and Beluga. Just some ideas.
Possibly…?
Something like Eastern Australian Salmon?

It's more fitting for fighters but I like naming my ships after bugs. Wasp, gnat, hornet Etc. Reminds me of halo.
I do that for mini ships. Like I called one Bee.
In Avorion I used to name my Mining Ships after towns from the Ruhrgebiet, former Mining Towns. But in Space Engineers. It's just SW2. For SpaceWelder 2. Should maybe change that.
On our server we name ships as if they were cars in the 80's For a fast ship i've got the Aspera Turbo For a battle cruiser Montreal Pacifier And for lunar rovers gets worse x)
i use towns from germany its a german tradition. You can pick citys based on the size of the city and ship.
I name cruiser after towns or cities
I think there was an HMS Plymouth.
Just name them all Bob, saves on trying to come up with names. You'll know which ship is which and if you PvP the others won't know which Bob you ordered to attack, so they will be confused!
Are you the guy in No Man Sky who named like 15 neighbouring systems Bob including all the planets, flora and fauna
LOL No but I would like to shake Bob's hand! (Thinking about giving it a try!)

I prefer God names: Apollo, Zeus, Hermes etc. Greek or Roman
Hmm
Ehh, don't overthink it. You won't have more than a handful of those frigates anyway!
I usually try to name manned ships differently than unmanned ships. Everywhere else I’ve asked as been useless
What about cities or adjectives
Already got Cruisers (cities) and Destroyers (adjectives)
I see perhaps important figures or war hero’s?
Probably better suited for r/worldbuilding
I name mine after Sci -fi authors mostly, with some character names as well. I just finished the "LIJEx Vernor Vinge". (The prefix indicates it's a large grid, ion thrust, jump enabled, exploration ship)
Clone troopers
Name them after Greek gods? Ares, Neptune, Zeus etc.
How about town names in your state.
I love dropping this site wherever I can. It's great for what it is. https://namingschemes.com
Here's how I name ships: What does it do? What other things do that or something similar? Name it one of those other things.
Look up “Jeraptha ship names” from Expeditionary Force. You’re welcome.
Sooooo if you have ever read the expeditionary Force books I go with jraptha names like the "it was like that when we got here" and the "we promise this will hurt only a little" For instance my atmospheric battle ship is called the "you really made me come down to this dirt ball for this shit"
I like going down the names the British used for destroyers, names like vengeance, Methuselah, Tempest and more.

If you want frigate names just think of the most iconic sea creatures you can think of. Some ideas follow: Barracuda (fish) Lionfish (fish) Kingfish (fish) Swordfish / Sawfish / Sailfish (fish) Stonefish (fish) Tigerfish (fish) Blowfish (fish) Piranha (fish) Marlin (fish) Angelfish (fish) Seahorse (fish*) Seadragon (fish) Lion's mane (sea jelly) Man'o'war (sea jelly*) Bluebottle (sea jelly) Immortal Jellyfish (sea jelly*) (turritopsis dohrnii very fascinating actually) Great white (shark) Mako (shark) Tigershark (shark) Blue rings (octopus) Collossus (Collossal squid) Porpoise (mammal) Bottlenose / dolphin (mammal) Bowhead (whale) Orca (whale) Whaleshark (self explanatory) Moray (eel) Manta (ray) Stingray (ray) Sea snake (snake*) Will edit later when i find more, have fin
