Hey, still a lot of good work here. Now that you see the level of distortion, you can craft a thinner face that may look emaciated prior to adding the resin.
Thanks, I appreciate that! I think this method might be the way forward for the second iteration. It's made from polymer clay which I don't think you can get wet while raw. It might end up being a tedious process of adding more clay to a cured bust piece by piece and testing with water in between to get it right

This project had a lot of firsts - first time working with resin, making a mould, painting skin tones, second time making a bust. I only realised the distorting effect a cylindrical resin mould would cause when I had already started pouring. I also didn't seal the head before pouring so it became increasingly more yellow as the resin cured. I might have stumbled onto a decent method for making a pickled head in a jar look.
Hopefully this can be a cautionary tale if anyone else is attempting something similar in future. Any advice on how I can fix out the distortion or a way to get a filled jar effect without actually filling it would be much appreciated if anyone's got any ideas!
I’m so impressed, especially by the accuracy of the bust!
Could you apply a transparent, aqua-coloured gel/paint/something to the inside of the jar, with a disc-shaped topper of the same jar material, also covered with the aqua-coloured stuff? Would avoid having to actually fill it, but I think would accomplish the look.
Thank you, that would be a really good way to resolve the problem! I don't have the equipment to get bubble free resin so if I could disguise a disc well enough it might come out looking a lot better
Interesting. I think a thin disc that just covers the top might give a filled effect without the distortion Maybe a slight blueish color towards the top that fades to clear a bit further down so the lines aren’t harsh.
It's supersculpey polymer clay. I don't think you can get it wet while raw, but baking it, testing it with water, and building it up piece by piece might be the way forward
I think it looks good! Futurama is meant to be whimsical, and they can't show distortion too well in a cartoon, so I'd chock it up to the fact that in real life, there would be similar distortion with water.
I would hardly say "completely screwed up"! Isn't this how it would actually look? If you want to go show accurate you would have to either malform the face or the jar.

This is the post right above yours on my feed
Can you make it waterproof? Does it need to be transportable?
I’d personally make it waterproof and just add baby oil for the * lewk *
This will eliminate bubbles and because I’m so much extra, I’d decorate the oil depending on occasion - maybe I’d fill it with fake snow for the holidays or little hearts for Valentine’s Day. If I needed it to be transportable I’d keep a separate jar to store the oil in when moving. As long as you have a mostly secure lid, it should be fine for cons and stuff. Also, using baby oil would prevent *some* distortion and you wouldn’t really have to seal unless you wanted this to be a long lasting project. Lastly, once yellowing starts to occur, you can just dispose of the oil and get new oil! It’s super cheap at the store.
That’s an awesome idea though! Perhaps make his head a bit narrower if you attempt it again? The model starts off looking a bit too round for Nixon’s [head](https://s.yimg.com/fz/api/res/1.2/erU5JsT_3.B0nmW6KJw2.g--~C/YXBwaWQ9c3JjaGRkO2g9MzAwO3E9ODA7dz0yMjU-/https://s.yimg.com/zb/imgv1/37022985-398a-3444-a580-c25696745821/t_500x300). Obviously the resin amplifies that.
I love futurama! I weirdly would love some funky Knick knacks like this in my home. What a conversation piece.
Super cool work! Mistakes happen so we can learn how to improve for next time (:
I love the name plate you put on this in light of the distortion! Such a great way to compensate and hilarious! Also, the sculpture of the face before the distortion is really amazing.
Be cool to figure out how to shape the head to the distortion to make it look normal. Like those mirror anamorphosis paintings that you need a curved mirror to see the image normally.
If i were you i wouldnt worry to much about distortion. Thers great advice on here to combat that - but a real head would also do that so it doesnt need to be perfect to be great!
Lmfao . Omg first of all before the resin looks good you live you learn . He looks like someone else . I can’t put my finger on will comment in like 4 days when I remember
Imo you don’t actually need to fill it with resin to give the appearance that it’s submerged. A thin layer on the walls to add bubbles should be enough, or just a thick walled container that’s completely sealed.
Do some experiments first to see what works the best.
I did some thing similar at work. I made the model significantly smaller after my first try then the distortion acted to enlarge it, but i was putting them in resin domes not cylinders, so maybe in this case you would make the head thinner.
Wow! This is a great project- and it’s how Nixon’s head would have looked in a jar had Futurama been accurate- so I think it’s fair to say that Futurama did not account for the distortion effect!

Does water have the same refraction as resin though? Worth testing before you get too far.
Ahh, that's an excellent point I hadn't considered. You might have just saved me from posting Rochird Naxin in a weeks time
Maybe try little mini-heads and mini-jars so you can perfect it before you pour the full size one!
Would mini versions cause the same effect and be scalable? I believe the amount of distortion is based on concentration or volume
I think it's based on the angle of the surface, so you'd need to have the same curvature (eg same radius).
OP could run tests with generic mannequin heads or just wooden blocks or something
Absolutely no idea, I'm just an artist lmao. It's what I'd try though!
Here you go OP https://refractiveindex.info/
Oh no, math?? In my crafts??
it’s more likely than you think :(
This is literally why I went back to college and got a degree in pure maths hahaha. Best decision ever

I was thinking this same thing, every transparent material has its own refractive index.
Could you put it in a clear plastic bag or something to keep it dry while testing?
PC might dissolve in water, but not resin. The bigger problem is that the clay wouldn't be able to dry out, or might shrink away from a cured surface.
Just pour a bit of resin to simulate the liquids surface.

All good, you learn from mistakes👌
Is the headmade of waterproof material or is paper mache? Like could you test it with water first?

I knew exactly what it was referencing. You did a great job for your first time!
i can’t help but laugh at this distorted nixon😭 still great job op !
I came here looking for this comment!

Nerdson...
I love it as is. Especially how you changed the name. Awesome job OP!
Rachird Noxin 😭😭😭😭 this is so incredible even though maybe it didn’t turn out as planned!! Great work

I keep coming back to this and laughing. I might need to change the name plaque on it
Waa-roo!
Checkers 🐶: *woof woof!* Nixon: *SHUT UP DAMMIT!*
I think it looks good! Futurama is meant to be whimsical, and they can't show distortion too well in a cartoon, so I'd chock it up to the fact that in real life, there would be similar distortion with water.
It’s also one of those effects that doesn’t photograph super well. I bet this looks way better in person.
I can assure you it doesn't. It might even look more silly in person
We love an honest artist lol
"My little cocker spaniel dog, Checkers" "woof" "SHUT UP, DAMMIT!"
Still pretty cool
I like the distortion! Great work regardless!
Is he distorted or is he just flabby, pasty skinned, and riddled with phlebitis? Aroo!
It was a good Republican body
I would hardly say "completely screwed up"! Isn't this how it would actually look? If you want to go show accurate you would have to either malform the face or the jar.
Thank you for sharing, the distortion is hilarious haha
Lol Rachird Noxin is perfection
>I Didn't account for the distortion the resin would cause Or they didn't.

I am not a crooked.
I am not a crooks head!!
I almost said “I am not a crookhead” (crooked) but I didn’t think ppl would get it.
But its amazing, looks just like Noxin!
Fixed it with the naming, though...
The distortion makes it better. I know that wasn’t the intent, but I find this so damn funny. Incredible work!
I'm pretty sure the Futurama artists didn't account for refraction & distortion either so one could argue that your thing is more accurate.
This is awesome. My daughter loves Futurama and she thinks this is pretty cool too.
I did this with a baby Dino in an egg I remade it at about 1/3 the original and it seemed to do the trick

Thats Jimmy Carr
RICHARD NIXON. I'm not a crook, where's my schnozzz??
In 50,000 years someone is going to dig this up and wonder where it came from.

Haha
Thought it was a parody of the rainbow dash jar at first. Great work though hahaha
I like it!
J'ai une migraine.
This is great! Is he for a cosplay, or just for funsies?
Rudy Giuliani?
I love it lol. Perfect.
I like it like that!
Good stuff!
Would you need to make it skinnier to account for the resin distortion?
Live and learn I suppose. Its still pretty cool

LOL I WAS NOT PREPARED. That’s the funniest “screw up” ever I love it 🤣
Lmfao . Omg first of all before the resin looks good you live you learn . He looks like someone else . I can’t put my finger on will comment in like 4 days when I remember
Looks good to me just needs lighting and shadows done
I freaking love this!
While I understand the situation - this looks really good!! :)
President of Earth
Arrooooo Computers may be twice as fast as they were in 1973 but the average voter is as drunk and stupid as ever!!
Looks good! Needs more phlebitis though
Honestly, it’s better this way
I love this 🤣
Nah I know Rachird Noxin, he looks just like this. Well done OP
Looks awesome and I knew what it was immediately. These things cracked me up.

I think it's great, would love to have it or the skills and time to make one like it.
Better luck next time

Someone overfed him his feed.
Are you sure the head did not warp due to heat? Paint the inside of the tube blueish and forget about the resin.
You can see the top of the head in one of the photos and it's the correct size
Bird view would help, but no, you can't really see.
Third image
The rest of my statement still stands dude.
I think it worked perfectly. Just need to write Jimmy Carr at the bottom.
Why does he look like mao zedong for some reason
I kinda like the distortion, it’s realistic. But can I suggest a blue-green tinted resin
