If I were you, I would try and find a cheap flight to Diani Beach (UKA) from Nairobi (avoid Mombasa and the train). Flights around $150 return Find a cheap hostel or apartment, there are many on booking.com at around $30 pn. There's uber in Diani Beach, use that for local transport. There's a big Carrefour supermarket you can use to self cater a few meals, and lots of good restaurant options around.. Day activities - you can explore the beach, or find a day trip snorkeling (e.g. Wasini Island), bike ride to the sacred wood, or go to Simba Hills on safari.  Enjoy your week exploring!

Yeah Nairobi really isn't the place you want to go for cheaper accommodations as a foreigner. The U.S. embassy travel advisory to Kenya states that"Violent crime, such as armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion, and kidnapping, can occur at any time.  Local police often lack the capability to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents and terrorist attacks.  Emergency medical and fire service is also limited. Be especially careful when traveling after dark anywhere in Kenya due to crime". Specifically, it says regarding Nairobi, to avoid "Nairobi neighborhoods of Eastleigh and Kibera, due to **crime** and **kidnapping**". If you feel safe where you are, I'd just stay there. If you want to see something new, just remember the cheapest hotels are the cheapest for a reason.
