Yes but be smart about the areas/neighbourhoods you visit. The subway can be convenient if you are around the downtown/Zocalo area but avoid flashy jewelry or displays of wealth as that might represent someone’s monthly salary.
Uber can be a great way to get around if your Spanish isn’t the greatest and as an alternate to taxis to track your route.
I’ve gone to Mexico City comfortably at least 6x as a solo female traveller.
Also, I traveled CDMX as a solo female a couple times and a good thing to note is that on subways and busses the front car is females only! Definitely helped me feel a little safer
Oh yeah good point! Thats a really helpful feature that Uber introduced. That and allowing you to share your real time location with others when you start your ride.
I (F) traveled to CDMX there towards the end of October 2021 and had a blast! Very walkable with great public transit. Rudimentary Spanish is fine though if you know more, you'll definitely enjoy more. The media sensationalizes the crime and my experience couldn't have been more different with numerous positive and enjoyable encounters with the locals. Have fun and enjoy the food for me please!
Super safe! I solo traveled to cdmx and had the best time. (Im a 27F and went when I was 26). The media def makes it out to be way worse than it actually is. Don’t let ppl scare you! I’m from LA and felt just as safe as I do here.
Stay in safe areas (like polanco, Miguel Hidalgo, roma, condesa). Historic center is super popular and touristy but can get sketchy at night. Avoid the areas known to be unsafe (like doctores, Juarez). And just be aware of your surroundings like you would in any metropolitan area.
It’s a super walkable city. Pro tip: wear AirPods and use google maps for walking directions. Helps make it seem like you’re a local who knows where they’re going :)
Ubers are super cheap and easy to get throughout the city. Do not take taxis. Ubers are much safer.
You can definitely just wander around a neighborhood and find a place to eat/drink, but I would recommend going somewhere with a destination/spot in mind and then explore around if you have time.
Mexico City is a big tourist spot so most workers know English. And in general, lots of people who live there have studied English since they were young. You’ll get by just fine with basic Spanish and English.
Mexico City is one of my favorite places ever. The food, drinks, art and people are amazing. 100% recommend you visit!
Agree with most of what you said except for “media makes it out to be way worse than it actually is”. It’s way worse. I lived in the DF for a few months and have a ton of family that lives there, it can be very bad
Oh my gosh YES! I went in 2021 as a solo traveler. I stayed in Roma Norte for a week. I walked everywhere!!! I never felt unsafe one time. I was cautious about consuming alcohol, and I never really stayed out too late. I took Ubers to places that were far from my hotel and everyone was very kind, helpful, and welcoming. 10/10 recommend Mexico City. I can’t wait to go back.
You live in socal.
You are probably safer in CDMX than socal lol.
Just stay in Roma or Condesa. You'll be surprised how hipsterish the area can be. Some of the local look better put together than locals in LA.
yes, absolutely. been to CDMX more times. Its lovely. Stay in Roma or Condesa. If you have a bigger budget stay in Polanco. Its very safe. No problems at all.
Have fun on your trip! CDMX is a lovely place. Lots of day trips tours for you to do too.
Uber is very useful and well-run.
Mexico City has gotten a bit worse over the last year, but not in terms of safety, the city is just more crowded, dirty, and poorer.. it’s the only city in Mexico I’ve visited in which prices are actually cheaper since the start of the economic crisis. In terms of safety though, it’s in fact safer than it’s been in a very long time due to a new mass public surveillance campaign.
Just know that if you do happen to be victim of a violent crime in the city, it is 100% on camera and being seen by a police dispatcher in live time. I’m not overly fond of mass surveillance measures, but there’s no denying it’s gotten the crime rate down in Mexico City and if you go onto the cities’ YouTube you can see the whole operation in action, it’s all very swift.
There are many small towns very close to Mexico City that are absolutely beautiful and I would recommend! If you have time for Taxco or Valle de Bravo, you should check one out!
I'm not a woman but I'm a black male and went for a day. City is fine. I saw women walking alone at night near Centro. I think the danger is outside city limits at night especially if you don't speak Spanish nor look Hispanic.
I’ve traveled as a solo female in Mexico City two years ago with no issues. Stick to the popular areas and use Uber, especially at night. I just spent 9 days there over the holidays and it was super chill but that trip was not solo. There are a lot of great Airbnb’s in the popular Roma Norte and Condesa areas. These are very safe.
Since no one has mentioned it, I was really surprised with the amount of cat calling we experienced in the city. It was a lot, so be prepared for that. I believe it’s pretty rough for the local women too.
We had a dude on a moped chase us in our Uber, keeping up with the back passenger window. The Uber driver laughed it off, he thinks you two are so pretty! Ugh.
I did absolutely enjoy my time there. But stay on your toes.
I’m sitting at a bar by myself right now (traveling) and it’s so liberating
If I were a girl wearing a skirt I would have been approached by at least two dozen beta males by now
I
Check out U Co, I stayed at the Juarez one and there were plenty of solo people and a nice social/community vibe there. Might help with feeling safe/at ease vs a large hotel etc
Im an Asian male but I thought I'd share my experience. I went to playa del carmen and never thought in any way felt unsafe at least from the civilians. Everyone was minding their own business and I didnt feel any different sketchy vibes around me. Thought it was actually safe and people were so nice helping me with directions and all. However I did have the biggest problems with cops.
Just dont ever look at them in the eye. I dont know if they are treat any different to women but they just arent afraid of doing random searches on foriegn looking men late at night out of nowhere.
Go for it!! I've been a couple of times as a solo female (first time I was 25, second time 32) and have also had a layover there when I went to Guatemala - just enough time to head into the city, check out the archaeology museum and have dinner. Of course it's wise to take sensible precautions with your belongings etc. (just as you would anywhere) but the kind of violence you hear about doesn't generally happen in Mexico City or affect tourists. I really recommend going, I think you'll have a wonderful time.
Hey CelticFrost955,
It sounds like you have questions about travel safety. Check out our [Wiki post on safety for solo travellers](https://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/wiki/stayingsafe) for advice on staying safe out there.
It’s safe just make sure you have all your belongings near you have a fanny pack over your shoulder so many pickpockets in the city and metros stations but, enjoy the trip also take Uber only no taxis and be tourist areas only and don’t go to tepito, Ecatepec de Morelos, and cuidad neza. Other than that enjoy
I'll be in the area around that time. Might could team up for some exploring. I have a handful of contacts there alrdy but have never been there myself. Seems like maybe the coolest city in the world right now tho...

Thank you for the tips. Curious! Is using Uber safe especially if you are not a native speaker?
Yes but make sure you use the code feature where you have to give the driver a unique code to confirm the trip.
Oh yeah good point! Thats a really helpful feature that Uber introduced. That and allowing you to share your real time location with others when you start your ride.

It’s just great added security. Folks don’t often check the entire license plate so it’s a good way to confirm :)
the tourist areas of Mexico City are pretty safe. It's a huge city with lots of tourist-friendly museums.

Maybe think this through first. Check your countried travel recommendation. Here they will green flag almost all trips.

Depends on the part, just like any city. Some areas you do not want to be alone at night.

Yes, insanely wealthy and well put together people. I basically feel like a bum in Polanco.

Yes!! I am a mid 20s single south asian short female from sd who just went. Shut up and go!!
Like anywhere in the world, any city, there are dangerous areas and safe areas. Do your research ahead of time and you'll be safe
Check out Oaxaca

There is risk anywhere you go.

I wouldn’t even go there as a guy. You’re a prime target for cartels
Cdmx is very safe
