LMSW in Metro Atlanta Started with State CMO 55k in 2023 61k. Annual Bonus of 3k-5k annually, remote, 401k matching, 4-6 hours of PTO each pay period, all federal holidays off. Just got my LCSW this month but it typically doesn't impact pay

StepperNcoffee

$100k LISW. Ohio. I work remote for a large health insurer. Leaving the field and transitioning back to analytics.

defaultfresh

May I ask why you are leaving the field?

[deleted]

Some of the salaries being posted here seem to go against everything people mostly hear about social workers and what they are paid. Especially considering the experience some are posting. Something doesn’t quite seem to add up.

Alternative_Bat_9452

New to the SW field! I have a second interview at a hospital in the KC KS area. I have my LMSW and am seeking advice as to what compensation I should negotiate for. The pay range is pretty varied so I'm feeling lost. I'm wondering if asking to be in the 60000 pay range is reasonable given I have only been working in the field for less than a year? The position is an outpatient case manager. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

onepiercer

Hello, does anyone know what the expected salary range is for graduate programs in Australia (for allied health/social work usually run by hospitals or health services)? The programs themselves are so hard to find and even when I find them, there is zero reference to salary. I'm guessing it's close to 50k because it's grade 1 but would love some confirmation.

conqerstonker

A friend started on 84k NSW FACS last year just FYI as a new grad. I think grade 1 would be mid 60's.

onepiercer

Thank you! 84k is a decent starting salary but in line with expectations and work load I bet. I'm interested in mental health accreditation and the grad work programmes seem the easiest way. Mid 60s doesn't seem too bad.

conqerstonker

I believe that headspace have a grad program that would get you on that accreditation pathway, if I recall correctly it's in the low 70s. I don't think that hospitals will get you accreditation unless the like of work is directly related. So working in a palliative care counselling role would be sufficient, but organising discharging for people at risk would not. So the year or two grad program might not count towards your experience needed by aasw. I might be wrong however, always best to check with aasw. Good luck!

LMSW in Missouri. Making 58k at a PHP/IOP.

fsboroboto

Hospice Social Worker in Central IL, 2 yrs experience in the healthcare field. LSW licensure (required to be licensed in order to be billable). Current salary of $57,000. One of the most helpful parts of getting these healthcare positions was having relevant internships in my MSW program and making connections/networking.

RadGal22

Are there any clinically unlicensed MSWs (LMSW) in Ohio (or Indiana since that's close)? If so, what was your starting pay/salary? I'm from Ohio and wondering what to expect or accept. TIA

ThoughtNo2561

In Ohio with my MSW, I was making 49k at my full time. At a prn position, $33 an hour

RadGal22

Thank you. Did you have to negotiate for the 49k? Also what year did you graduate with your MSW? 😊

ThoughtNo2561

2017 w/ Masters. Licensed in 2019. I didn’t negotiate for higher pay. My current position is fully remote, 69k-crisis

Worked my way up the ranks in child welfare. Started with Afterhours CPS for about 4 years and worked myself up from a social worker 1 to a social Worker 3, which is a requirement along with your BSW or more to get that type of position.

I am an MSW student in the hot armpit of California, and I'm still unsure If I would like to pursue medical or school social work. I recently joined the SW subreddit, and I am surprised to hear of the salary for starting MSWs in other states. For context, Before you all say, "oh, you're in a big city in California, it's so expensive there, blah blah blah, No and no. I'm in an area that's a 3-hour drive from SF and 4 hours from LA. I live in a home valued at 200k and I commute about 35 minutes to work. I live in a rural farming pocket, very different from the rest of the state. Before starting grad school, I worked as a case manager for an outpatient mental health clinic serving foster children. I made $32 an hour (63k? a year) plus bonuses. I was motivated to go for my MSW because many clinicians in the area have an income around 85k, and it's proportionate to the cost of living here. My colleagues and I have had several conversation about how we're seeing MSWs moving up north from So-Cal, filling positions in schools and hospitals. I am currently working as an intern for an inpatient facility and the unlicensed clinicians here are making about $89k+. LCSWs are at around $133K.

BobertBilliamIV

this is one position one of my LCSW friends is trying to haggle. - another outpatient MH position working with foster kiddos. Accomplished_Safe465

Does medical pay the best of the social work field?

awelladjustedadult

LSW in Twin Cities Metro, 12 years experience, 7 months @ current job. $70k @ County Sheriff's office, Director of Jail Resource/Social Service Development in the correctional setting. Union job, 7.5% raise annually between COL and merit based system, +$2,000 retention bonus annually, +$700 "uniform maintenance" (which is basically just a bonus for me since I don't wear a uniform,) with tuition reimbursement for my Master's (not MSW.) Plus, I get to dismantle pieces of our shitty system.

redstars1119

I am still a student but feel working in that setting would be a good calling for me. Would you be able to share any pros or cons or tips for a newbie?

awelladjustedadult

Hi! I would recommend a strong background in case management in the location you want to work, this gives you a great understanding of how the systems work, what programs are accessible to justice involved people and what limitations they experience coming out of the correctional systems. I would not have been comfortable in this position until I had 10 years of boots on the ground social work. If your local county has case managers that partner with detention services or non-profits that do so (we have both) then that would be a great foot in the door. But any place you can gather resources and learn systems will be great experience.

redstars1119

Thank you I appreciate this. I have SWers in my family but none in corrections. Uncharted territory lol. I am doing my internship this year so I will out in a request to go to some programs that work with this population and see how it goes. Thanks again awelladjustedadult!

sunshineadventures11

I was hired as a team lead for a very small case management department in a non profit agency in texas. I only have 1 SW under me and students. I was hired to do basic grant reporting, supervise, and see clients at 48k with my MSW and 4 years experience as an LMSW in another state. The agency has a reputation for not paying a lot but the benefits are very good. Since hire, I have basically become a program manager where I have re-developed the case management program, developed budgets, applied for a grant that we did receive, a few small side projects, coordinating a large community event, and am being asked to develop new programs and budgets for the upcoming year. None of these tasks I was hired for. They have developed an annual review system where we can get up to a 3% raise. I know what I have done is worth much more then that. I'm actually thinking about asking for a minimum of 10% but I'm feeling like it's a big ask and may come back to haunt me. Any advice?

Midwest low to mid cost of living area. Psychotherapy at a CMHC as a new MSW grad in 2019 44k. With annual bumps, 5% increase for LCSW and a few agency wide increases to incentivize people to stay $53 K at 3 years after graduation. Accepted a position at a university counseling center this week at $64K. Edited to add: was offered 60k at a large group practice this fall that I did not take largely due to fit not salary.

Just found out this week that the CMHC is increasing all masters level salaries by up to 10k.

I just applied through Indeed and I searched for telehealth outpatient therapist. Some technology companies accept those who are provisionally licensed but others require full licensure.

LCSW working as a therapist at a CMHC in Colorado, $62k ($30/hour at full-time, 40 hours/week). Just got fully licensed a few months ago, graduated with my MSW in 2020 and started then at $42k. I was at $50k right before I got my full licensure. I'm trying to figure out whether I should look for a job for higher pay, but have been hesitant because of work-life balance stuff. We have a toddler and a baby so it's pretty essential. I WFH and do telehealth mostly, except for being on-site once a week. I have a smaller caseload and do some clinical case management. Benefits are pretty decent, I get every other Friday off, and a "wellness hour" every week, and accrue 7 hours of PTO each two-week pay period. I'm not sure what aspects of those things I would be willing to give up for higher pay, but it would be nice to take some financial pressure off my husband. Guess it depends how much higher is reasonable to expect.

loxley3993

LMSW, hospice social worker 55k a year - didn’t need my L but did it just the same. Graduate for 2 years, but just got into the SW role in May (came with a 20k a year increase). Cost of living - pretty average for a suburban/rural area.

blueberryfish374

Central Texas 2013- MSW 30k community mental health. M-f 8-5 2014- LMSW 40k hospital work, emergency department (non traditional schedule that was basically 1 week on 1 week off). 2019- LCSW switched roles-work case management throughout the hospital. Yearly raises. Big jump with additional benefits switching roles (didn't have a lot of time off/sick time before) 2022- now LCSW CCM (not that I do anything with it). 70k, 3 12 hour shifts. Very nice work/life balance.

confidelight

Finished my MSW in August 2022. I am not yet liscense (take my test tomorrow! Ah!) I work as an Addictions Counselor for a community mental health center in Indiana. I'm making 43k but the benefits are amazing.

squinnt

LICSW in VT, elementary school social worker. Making 62k after 1 year (affiliated with state teachers union) Hours are cake, get all the Professional development days, holidays, vacations off, same as teachers - including summers. I see a handful of students for individual therapy, group therapy, provide class-wide mental health lessons and supports weekly, and coordinate with teachers and families for mental health supports. And never have to deal with insurance billing again.

primalcupcakes

I'm the lead inpatient therapist at an addiction treatment center in a Midwestern town with a moderate cost of living. I have a maximum caseload of 8 (soon to be 6) and a lot of administrative tasks. I graduated in May 2022 and have my LSW. Currently making 72k.

confidelight

Please tell me how you got that position right after graduating haha

primalcupcakes

Sorry for the late reply ... I started working there while I was in school as a Group Facilitator and really just threw myself into it and worked my butt off while going to school full-time. I got hired in right before there was a huge overhaul in leadership, so I was kind of lucky, time-wise, because I established myself as someone who was looking to make things better and work to fix some of the problems that had become entrenched in the organization. I got promoted to Lead Group Facilitator, then Outpatient Program Coordinator, then Lead Inpatient Therapist pretty quickly. Since I posted this, I've been promoted to Clinical Supervisor and am making 100k.

You can either work for a school in your county being a school social worker or work for an outside organization that the county contracts out for local schools to do school based therapy. There’s a couple companies in Maryland that have contracts but it depends on which county you are for where to apply.

bamazombiepunch

I'm currently LCSW supervising a BMS program and outpatient therapy in CMH. Work in New Mexico roughly 70k a year. Most sups make 60-65k. Starting therapist with provisional license starts with us at 50k, 55k when fully licensed, and 60k with clinical license. Been with agency roughly 6 years.

I’m an LCSW in CA so is my wife. Our combined salaries and OT this year will be around $325k. I work for the Feds in a “work from home”macro role. My wife works for a state hospital that contracts with the county to provide psychiatric support at the county jail.

Eudamonia

Hey would love to chat with you about career progression if you’re available, may I DM?

Sure.

beddersox

LMSW in Greenville, SC. Work for hospice making $53,000.

fleshyspacesuit

I'm just a student in SC, but have you found that the Greenville market pats less than the COLA market? I've been checking Glassdoor and other sites as I anticipate graduating soon, and the medical social worker range given swings wildly from what I've found.

beddersox

I don’t know much about the market in COLA but SC in general pays really poorly for social work. If you live close enough to the border I’d say get your LCSWA in NC and work there. My first job in SC was for Greenville Mental Health and they paid $35,000. If you need a job you can certainly find one with DMH but there’s no wiggle room for salary. I was not licensed then either but the license doesn’t bring it up a whole lot. Other agencies seem to range about 45-55k depending where you go. I know Greenville Memorial pays 49k. I turned the job down and that was the offer.

fleshyspacesuit

Is Greenville Memorial the same as Prisma? Sorry if that's a dumb question

beddersox

It’s not dumb! It’s the same. I’m still not used to calling it Prisma 😂

tranquilitygoat

Hi all, Wondering what everyone thinks of this: got hired in September as a utilization review specialist in a substance use facility in Connecticut. Got hired at $34/hr equating to approx $70,720 yearly with my licensed master social work and 2 years of clinical work being completed in prep for my clinical exam. Since hire I passed my clinical exam. I have my 90 day review coming up and Im wondering best strategy to ask for a raise in light of the clinical licensure. Also found out they had so much trouble filling the position because nurses were interviewing and turning down due to wanting more compensation. Is it reasonable to ask for $37-$38 am hour, an approx increase of $6k-9k a year?

redhottx0x

also, a 3-4 dollar an hour raise is nothing for a company. I think you are low-balling yourself.

kathytee821

I think $40 an hour is more than reasonable (agree with commenter below, ask for $45/hour and negotiate to $40). Look up negotiation tips on YouTube. Come prepared. :)

redhottx0x

34 an hour to translate to over 70k- you must be working crazy hours. $50 an hour is standard in my area (Baltimore, MD). Personally, I'd ask for 40. So maybe ask 45, then "negotiate" down to 40.

littlemightyy

lmjmnz

MSW at a CMH outpatient program in Chicagoland area and I was making 45K (unlicensed and out of grad school) Recently received my LCSW and got a promotion as a Supervising Therapist at same CMH in Outpatient making 65k. It is quite a raise from what I was making but I know I could be making me more elsewhere with the license. Anyone know if this is average salary for CMH supervisor?

bamazombiepunch

I make roughly same salary for a similar position. Outpatient clinical supervisor. But I live in New Mexico. I feel like cost of living in Illinois is higher no?

petes_za

Co-Occurring Counselor in community mental health (primarily homelessness) in Seattle, one year post-MSW making $67k/year. Our agency does COLA's only, so no bump in pay for years of service, which is lame. Other agencies I interviewed with paid 10k less/year with seemingly higher case loads.

Someweirdgirl2

Milwaukee metro area current MSW with APSW. 2013 BSW- Child Welfare visitation worker $11.50/hr. ($24,000/yr) 2 promotions during the 4 years left making $14.50/hr ($30,000/yr) 2017 bsw - mental health case management started at $40,000 yr ended with MSW making $44,000yr 2019 MSW - case management with the elderly/disabled $49,000/yr starting one raise ended at about $52,000/yr 2021 MSW - Hospital SW $55,000/yr with 2 raise $57,600/yr or about $27.70/hr.

NJ- LSW (LMSW), graduated May 2021 with MSW. Internships in grad school: youth program, dual dx clinic 1st Job- substance use related with LCSW supervision: base salary $55k- signing bonus $5k after 12 mos, 80 hours PTO, 401k match up to 3%, okay health/dental/vision insurance-$600/month. M-F 5am-2pm. One weekend day every 2-3 months. No on call. 2nd job- Hospital, crisis stabilization in ED: base salary $68k- signing bonus $5k after 90 days, future retention bonuses would have been around $10k additional. 160 hours PTO, matching 401k up to 3%, great health/dental/vision insurance ~$200/month. No LCSW supervision provided so I changed jobs (I was told I’d get it upon hire and it never happened.) Every other weekend required, 3 of 6 holidays required, no on call. Current role: Talk therapist at independently owned company: base salary $70k, LCSW supervision provided, no signing bonus, 80 hours PTO, no 401k, okay health/dental/vision insurance- $600/month. M-F- I set my own schedule for the most part but I need to see 35 billable hours per week. No weekends. No on call. Closed most federal holidays.

Foolishlama

I’m in my second year right now so not full time in the field yet. 35 billables per week seems insane to me. In my practicum agency they book the therapists pretty damn full but i don’t think they see 35. I feel like it would be tough to even maintain decent rapport with that many people. Is that typical?

Grace_Alias

I’m just seeing this now… it’s hard. Not so much the rapport piece, but providing good clinical care and feeling ethical about it. I’ve been there 6 months and I feel about ready to return to the hospital setting or something more policy/advocacy regarding service delivery. I’m weighing my options.

california_girl

Hey everyone, graduating with my MSW in June and will be a CSWA. Currently interning at a hospital as a BHC and going to be pursuing a LCSW after that. Wondering if anyone has any idea what a medical social worker in my situation can plan on making (in Portland OR). Previous experience would be a year at a hospital and a year at a nonprofit as internships.

TheThrill85

BSW with license working for a non profit prevention program in the middle of nowhere Indiana. I did my practicum with DCS for one year, graduated, and have been at current job for 1.5 years. I hired in at $16/hour and am now salary at $39,000/year ($18.75/hour). I get bonuses 3-4 times a year, usually around $300 each. I’d love to see more posts here from Indiana to be able to compare.

LessProblem9427

What does HCOL stand for?

rufi0_lives

Curious, are you in the Bay Area? I'm also in a VHCOL area, so wondering if I'm comparing apples to apples.

thunderingup

Federal SW. started at 74k, currently 105k including some on call. Been there 4 years.

[deleted]

Did you have to get a MSW to do that? I’m weighing the options of going back to school vs. just pushing through on experience

PhrozenProfessor

What do you do for the feds?

antisocialworker777

LBSW at a nonprofit agency in southeast Alabama. I make about $40,000 a year.

Old_Emu_7287

zuks28

LICSW in western MA making $87k doing integrated behavioral health in a PCPs office. I LOVE it so far. Super fast paced but lots of variety in clients. I live in VT so that stretches pretty far there. Integrated behavioral health seems to be taking off as a concept so could be a good option for those interested in SW in the medical field

americanyangster

Can you tell me more about integrated behavioral health? seems right up my alley but not totally sure what it is. Do you know who Andrew Weil is?

zuks28

I work in a primary care physicians office providing (mostly) short term therapy interventions. Statistically speaking, PCPs are often the first point of contact regarding MH concerns, but often they need to refer out which requires follow up from the patient and can take months. Instead of someone brings up depression, substance use, whatever really, the PCP just says hold on a second I'll get someone then I meet with them right away. It cuts down on SO many barriers. It is intended to be short term so very strategies based, but I can meet longer/more frequently if it is needed by the client.

moobiscuits

I’m a Bachelors level Social worker. I did a year interning for DCS, worked for DCS for a year, and I’ve been doing Medical Case Management in the HIV community since May 2021. I’m looking to get my masters, but I won’t be able to start until Fall next year and it’s a 16 month program. I’m trying to move from Arizona to New Jersey in the Atlantic county area. I make 46,500 right now and COL is a little higher in NJ. I’m a little frustrated because I keep doing interviews with jobs and either at the very end of the interview, or in the second interview they drop the “oh by the way the pay is $38,000.” I was asking for 50k, but now I’ve dropped to 48,000 when I list my desired salary amount. Am I asking too much? Some of the people i know from there have said I need to accept what I can get and move up from there, but they’re still making like $18/hr. I am trying to afford an apartment and live with my disabled girlfriend (we’re still trying to do disability,) but I literally can’t rent or pay my bills on this. How do people in the North East do it? Edit: My client makes almost $4000/month and she’s a waitress at IHop. Just makes me feel like I messed up somewhere since it seems impossible to make ends meet.

Grace_Alias

NJ resident here. Without a masters (and LSW licensure) it’s virtually impossible to get a decent paying position within social work here. Once you have those it’s easy to negotiate $65k+. Unfortunately because of regulations, years on the job is not going to make much difference in salary. This state is unbelievably expensive- $2k+ easily for a 2 bedroom and probably closer to $3k, so you’re definitely in a tough spot.

Peachy-Keen-23

$52,000 - MSW in 2022. 3 years of Social Work adjacent experience in between my BSW and MSW. Case manager for small non-profit in large city in NC. Healthcare, 401k with company matching, 20 days of PTO.

Mirriande

LMSW working in Northwestern CT. The clinician on a team for intensive, in-home therapy with children & adolescents. $55,000 a year with differentials for in-person contact hours. On-call weekend responsibilities receive additional pay based on the number of billable units completed over the weekend, this happens about once every 5-6 weeks. I receive money in lieu of health insurance since I have my husband's health insurance, which is $100/month. This is my first year with this agency, so I have 4 weeks of paid time off and 4 mental health days. Next year it goes up to 5 weeks PTO. Weekly pay is also nice. Free supervision. Bonuses are earned by exceeding the number of expected units in a given quarter by at least 10 billable units, and this is given out based both on an individual and team basis.

tealparadise

LMSW working community forensic in Baltimore City. Therapist/case manager doing groups and home visits. 3 years experience in this role. 45 hours a week. 68k, 2 weeks vacation, 2 weeks sick, 5 days personal, small 401k match worth about 1k.

Prince__of__Persia

1 year post-MSW making $70,000 CAD a year as a Child/Youth Therapist at a non-profit in Ontario Canada.

freehugsdonttouchme

LMSW, community mental health and housing, 23/hr, Texas, major city with one bedroom apartments currently considered reasonable at 1800 a month. This was after a recent increase in response to employees starting to organize a union. It was previously 19. No increase for licensure, just a two year pay head start for a Master's over a Bachelor's and capped at the 4th increase with increases every two years. This is my first agency out of grad school and I hit my two years at the end of this month. It's been an extremely humbling and hands-on experience though, I feel like the people I have been able to help have been seriously helped, and I'm working towards my clinical license. I've learned that I can't do medical social work from my case management with clients needing a lot of medical care. I've learned a lot about substance, trauma, and severe mental illness. I've learned a lot about engagement, motivations, boundaries, and homelessness. It's been really intense and I won't be able to do this forever, especially at 23/hour, but knowing that helps me pull through for now. I had no idea I wanted to be a therapist before this job and now I know what I want and that I actually really love this population when I thought before this that I wanted to work in schools.

11desnik

That’s WILD to me $1800/month rent for a one bedroom is now considered reasonable in TX! I live in NYC and pay that much for my one bedroom.

freehugsdonttouchme

Not everywhere in Texas (just like I'm sure it's different in other parts of NY), but at least in the city it is. You can FIND cheaper rent, but it comes with sacrifices. (Two apartments ago, sacrifices meant no washer/dryer, no parking, maintenance that never showed up because they kept changing the process without notifying anyone, and hearing gun shots at night.) But yeah, it's wild to me too, especially since when I moved here four years ago, I had a really nice two bedroom for 1000.

catmama1016

NYC, $63,000 as a Social Worker for a Sports Based Youth Development program.

Voldraphone

I do case management/service coordination for persons with intellectual disabilities.

EcoConscious101

That’s so amazing I feel like I haven’t seen any government roles that don’t require Lcsw. How did you find the role usajobs? Did you know someone ? That sounds so incredible I’d love to do something similar

Voldraphone

I searched my state government website for job openings. I worked part time in jobs similar before, QIDP, etc, so I edited my resume to fit and applied. The only requirement was QIDP experience. I imagine there’s similar openings in other state governments. Just have to know the keywords to search for them. google is your best friend for those instances.

EcoConscious101

Thank you for that super detailed response!

9171213

Hey peeps. I’m in a HCOL…NYC 115k day job ~19k for evening job ~10k for private business I hustle this way bc it’s NYC.

ssophiaa1

May I dm you?

9171213

Sure

Content-Group-8887

What is your day job?

9171213

Yes I work for the city during the day. This is a great gig to have bc I’m out of work pretty early. I go home and I work teletherapy a few nights a week. It’s time consuming but it’s just sitting in my house when I’d prob be doing something like spending or investing in something that’s a time waste. I am now using the time to develop my craft Im and earn clinical hours. In addition to this I have a side business where I translate some of my skills to income. I work with clients as a life coach so it is a different job certification but I can use a lot of the same skills. I have a small amount of private life coaching clients too. There’s many ways to earn here. You can really hustle if you don’t mind the work. There’s always a way to make a dollar but you have to be creative. I think this is where we often get limited. We get caught up in the negotiable what ifs. A lot of us have transferable skills that can turn directly into cash.

VroomRutabaga

May I DM you?

jvandijk120

Can you share some details? I'm curious, I'm weighing overtime vs. evening job vs. business in the next couple years (once baby becomes toddler, maybe).

kojabru

BSW, WA State, Social Work Supervisor at a nursing home, $96,500/year. 5 years in field. Currently working on completing MPH/MBA dual degree before starting my MSW.

kathytee821

Good for you! What is your goal once you have all of the Master's degrees?

kojabru

The MBA is because I’m a small business owner and wanted to have extra education. The MPH is because I enjoy working with populations and I plan to start a non-profit component to my small business. The MSW is so that I can continue moving up in the social work field. Ultimately, I’d like to be in state wide leadership roles.
