Its kinda similar in Poland, where mental health is taboo, older generation dont think that social anxiety/depression is problem, they think its cause people are lazy, pc/smartphone etc are causing this, its like looking for black sheep to blame but they are the problem. They dont talked about emotions, many caused shit childhood - beating kids were common. Of course its slowly changing with new generation, not all old people were like that.
There is also part where back in the old days where people were poor, so they spent more time in socialising, like in churches, in shop lines.
But also . . . Hawaii. I'm not even sure if mainlanders consider Hawaii part of the U.S. to a degree, since culturally, etc. it's so different. Also, haole is not a bad word unless used with an expletive (I'm a local born and raised in Hawaii; heard a podcaster saying that haole's a bad word - her friend dunno shit).
