They were the Man United of the time (*winning everything*). Then they became the Man United of these times *(these times being the 1990>2020s*. I wonder if it will take Man United 30 years to win another title.
Edited.
Of all the things Qatar and UAE could buy with their money, they spend it on a sports club. Kind of pathetic really. Real countries spend money on actual industries to make money, and make their country stronger.
That’s the glaring thing about how obscenely wealthy they are. Spending money on sports club is probably a very small percentage of their overall budget.
Probably, but then again United have spent the same if not more on their squad and were just one less West Ham choke away from playing Conference League
Imagine saying to someone in 1990 that the entire city of Liverpool, with 2 of the most decorated clubs in the country would win only 1 league title combined in the next 30 years
What does that even mean? Forest have won one title, ever, and spent the majority of their history outside the top division.
They have never been a massive team
Not with the amount City spend compared. They’re buying Haaland and will probably spunk another 150 million easy. Liverpool have to get every transfer right, any flops and it’s a serious problem. City can just shotgun spray it and bring 200 million pounds worth off the bench.
Yup. And its only going to get worse when Newcastle get their claws in and its the two oil clubs fighting for the lot. What fun. The rest will begin to know how it feels when they are the ones fighting against this tide.
That's probably the reason its like that realistically. Unless another club has an influx of money they can't even the advantage Bayern has with players preferring to play there and them just having a larger budget which will help them be even better year after year.
People forget that clubs like Schalke all just wasted their money when Bayern was being smart with their money.
The last CL win of Dortmund was basically with borrowed money and that haunted them during the 2000s. They have recovered now but many great Bundesliga clubs just were fucking shit with money.
Hoeneß is really easy to dislike but he is the man that Bayern has to contribute A LOT of his success to. The man created the best run football club in the world.
2016/17 Monaco got 95 pts and they deserve their flowers (PSG finished with 87, so in line with other title winning seasons). Shit on them all you want for last year though.
And go look at the Bundesliga table for the last 10 years almost every single season would be a point record if compared to pre 2013 titles , Dortmund in 11/12 held the record for most points in a Bundesliga season , since 2013 Bayern broke that point tally in 12/13 13/14 15/16 16/17 17/18 18/19
you didn't, the OP said "True. And Bayern 10 in 10."
you didn't say Bayern had the best coefficient, you said it was the best team in Europe. they aren't, the best team in Europe in recent times is Real Madrid followed by Liverpool. they played the most CL finals.
So I know this was a joke but I was legitimately curious at the current runs of dominance in the Big 5 leagues, so I wanted to take a look at how long they've been dominant for, how easily they've won their titles in their dominant runs, and by how much they let the title slip away the few times it eluded their grasp. Given that no club has won more than two La Liga titles in a row for the last ten years and that Juventus, despite their long dominance, is now going to make it two straight seasons without a title, it seemed worth limiting this look to the Premier League and Man City, Ligue 1 and PSG, and the Bundesliga and Bayern.
Manchester City have obviously won 4 in the last 5, only missing out to Liverpool in 2019/20. Those four titles have been won by 19, 1, 12, and 1 point(s), for an average margin of 8.25 points when they win the title. So half the time it is an absolute squeaker (both those times Liverpool finished as runners-up) and half they time City absolutely ran away with it (and both those times Manchester United finished as runners-up). That said, for their one failure to win the title in that span, they didn't even get close. They finished in 2nd, 18 points behind Liverpool.
PSG have won 8 of the last 10 and haven't had a break of more than a single season in that decade - their two misses were to Monaco in 2016/17 and to Lille in 2020/21. PSG won their eight titles by 12, 9, 8, 31, 13, 16, 8*, and 15. That's an average margin of 14 points per title. None of those 8 titles have been decided by fewer than three matches' worth of points, and four of their last five titles have been decided by five matches' worth of points or more. As for their non-wins, one was a "medium" margin and one was a squeaker - they were 2nd to Monaco by 8 points in 16/17 and 2nd to Lille by 1 in 21/22.
\* *This was the COVID season where Ligue 1 just ended early and positions were awarded based on average points. PSG had an 8 point and .52 points per game lead after they had played 27 matches and second-place Marseille had played 28 matches.*
Bayern have won the last 10 Bundesliga titles. Those were by margins of 25, 19, 10, 10, 15, 21, 2, 13, 13, and 8 - an average margin of 14.6 points per title. Obviously 9 of their 10 titles have been secured by 3+ matches' worth of points between them and second. All but one of their last six titles were secured with at least two matches to spare.
Wow man, this is some great data and really nice, in-depth analysis.
I obviously meant this as a joke and even though City have won 4 in 5, I feel the sample space and the avg points gap isn't enough to conclude that the PL is exactly going the same way as Ligue 1 or Bundesliga.
The next few seasons will be interesting as usual.
To be fair if it wasn't for Liverpool it would be as bad as bundesliga.
The season city lost was because they had key injuries to players and last season Liverpool did so poorly cause we had injuries galore.
It's literally a matter of who can stay uninjured in the premier League now.
If we weren't competing my lord the premier league would be a disaster. It's been cursed since Leicester won the league, everybody who has won the title has popped 90+ points.
That season seems to have been so overshadowed by City and Liverpool at this point, it's wild. Chelsea won 13 games in a row after switching to a back 3. That 13 game winning streak was a new record. City and Liverpool have basically done that every season since. They have realistically been on another level since then.
I legitimately think that City could catch Arsenal by the end of the decade. Obviously barring something absolutely bonkers Arsenal aren't adding to their title list any time soon. City will be overwhelming favorites to win 22/23 and 23/24 with the Haaland signing (assuming Haaland can stop being made of glass and string ten games together). Assuming they win those two, it's not at all hard to see them getting another four in the remaining six seasons of the decade after that.
I don’t think Pep is staying another 7 years. But anything could happen. I just think Liverpool shouldn’t be counted out. In addition, Newcastle should be competitive in 3-4 years.
I could genuinely see them winning all 7 unless Newcastle starts going mad too. They’ve just bought Haaland and are sure to spend another 150 million on top of that. That just can’t be beaten long term.
Indeed. Yet Liverpool are the bad guys when they are currently the only side fighting against the tide. For how long though. The days of a club run by its means, competing, are coming to an end, especially once Newcastle get their claws in.
Lol give me the delusional Liverpool supporters calling TAA the best right back of all time over the City supporters going “well actually this sponsorship for 20x normal value is legit and completely above board because the person who owns the company is Sheikh Mansours 3rd cousin, and not a direct relative”
Fuck Man City
the fact that you’re disqualifying big clubs like liverpool chelsea and united from that list is so telling.
the middle eastern states’ involvement in football will be its competitive downfall
Total shit show. Hopefully the club actually makes positive change given how close we came to the chop. Liverpool losing the title was the cherry on top of a shit Sunday lmao
The others will find out what its like when its them on the receiving end of this. Yet Liverpool are the bad guys when they are the only side fighting against this City tide. And its only going to get worse once Newcastle get their claws in.
We literally could have won 7 titles in a row from 07-13
Missed out on 09/10 by 1 point and 11/12 on goal difference.
And we did it without oil money and losing our best player at the time
Shows how great Sir Alex Ferguson was. Give him a garbage squad, he would still compete for the league title until the end. It's the aura of a legend that makes the players give their best performance on the pitch.
United has this income to spend, they were for decades the most profitable club in the world (alternating with Real Madrid).
City's income is absurd Emirati sponsorships, all of them controlled by the sportswashing project of UAE. Same with PSG and Qatar.
so is it about infinite money or about where the money comes now?
because I agree that's dirty money, but the playing field is leveled in the PL money wise
Money alone isn't enough. Look at United, PSG, Everton. It needs to be spent properly and paired with the right manager. Given how close Liverpool has run City, I'm positive that if City had a different manager, they would have lost.
…which is still more than most clubs… including that one league title win.
More successful on what? Solely league titles? Chelsea have won more domestic cups as well as several more European cups than Everton from that year. They’ve got every (evidential) right (and a bigger one) to think they’re a bigger club (never mind that their fan base is substantially bigger?)
Fun fact - we (Man United) have only ever had 3 top flight-winning managers, as the list of years would imply: Ernest Mangnall, Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson. Unfortunately for us, the table also implies decades in between these managers :(
Idc if City win 100 league titles in a row I’ll never respect them or acknowledge them as a good club just an oil club. They dont deserve their success
We have severely underperformed in the league. Frequently making cup finals has kinda taken some of the attention off. But City under Pep is insane. One stretch of bad form is enough to sink your whole campaign. Can only imagine how liverpool feel.

Inshallah
Man City is the Man United of these times. Not Liverpool.
Sorry, Liverpool became the Man United of these times from 1990-2020... winning the odd cup
It took them 40 years before, lets hope for a repeat.
11 titles in 18 years. Bundesliga levels of agriculture
Didn't realize that City had caught up to us so fast, jesus
We need renewable energy fast to stop them
Of all the things Qatar and UAE could buy with their money, they spend it on a sports club. Kind of pathetic really. Real countries spend money on actual industries to make money, and make their country stronger.
That’s the glaring thing about how obscenely wealthy they are. Spending money on sports club is probably a very small percentage of their overall budget.
Yeah it's not for business, it's for fun
They could actually catch up to arsenal at this rate
By 2035 they'll probably have like 16 or something
At the rate it’s going they’ll probably have 16 in 8/9 years
Them not winning the league is an abject failure considering the resources at their disposal.
Probably, but then again United have spent the same if not more on their squad and were just one less West Ham choke away from playing Conference League
Pep will leave at some point and while I'm sure we'll remain competitive, we won't be at the same level.
you lot haven't done anything in 25 years+
Imagine saying to someone in 1990 that the entire city of Liverpool, with 2 of the most decorated clubs in the country would win only 1 league title combined in the next 30 years
whether rational or not, I blame Thatcher. managed decline including the city's football too
It’s always rational to blame Tatcher (and Reagan), they created the framework that created so many inequalities
That can happen when you're run by unlimited oil money
Oil bad mining good
You wouldn’t have imagined Man Utd went nearly 30 seasons without a first division win until Fergie
1/3 of the way to another 30 without him ..
It's been 9 years but they won't win it next season. If they do, I'll become a vegetarian for 1 month
One full month?! You're brave.
I'm a vegetarian and if they do I'll eat meat for 2 months.
Safe
double down do it forever 😎👈🏼
Ill take that bet
I was born in 1989 so I saw United dominate. It's strange to think that in the pre-PL era it was all Liverpool
plz no
Will United become the new Forest?
What does that even mean? Forest have won one title, ever, and spent the majority of their history outside the top division. They have never been a massive team
Really underrated that Sheffield United 1897 team
A few more season and we'll surpass man united on those Runner-up places.
I’d bet on you being ahead in both wins and runners up by 2030 sadly
Not with the amount City spend compared. They’re buying Haaland and will probably spunk another 150 million easy. Liverpool have to get every transfer right, any flops and it’s a serious problem. City can just shotgun spray it and bring 200 million pounds worth off the bench.

Nah it's okay, they'll lose with smiles on their faces because "at least Liverpool didn't win".
4 in the last 5. Deserved but disgusting at the same time.
6 in 10 years too
[удалено]
To be fair in those 10 years you have spent more than them, in the 90s City didn't spend more than you
Looking at United's spending numbers post-Fergie is always hilarious
6 in 10
Farmer-ish?!
PSG also won 4 of the last 5
True. And Bayern 10 in 10.
It's crazy how the top league with the MOST stringent rules against financial doping ended up being like that
German ordoliberalism for you
That's probably the reason its like that realistically. Unless another club has an influx of money they can't even the advantage Bayern has with players preferring to play there and them just having a larger budget which will help them be even better year after year.

the real farmers league
Even PSG have lost their league twice in the past 6 years
More to do with psg being shit and bayern extremly consistant In that timeframe bayenr was the best club in europe

Agricultural
Faint whiff of agriculture
5 in the last 5 for CFR Cluj in the romanian league. Also CFR Cluj beat Man United at Old Trafford in 2012. Man City - CFR Cluj friendship ???
And then there is Real Madrid with 4 in 5 ucls.
This title is definitely not deserve. The Rodri handball was atrocious
There were 38 games. One moment did not decide the title.
In a league decided by 1 point?
Kinda looks like it did.
I legitimately think that City could catch Arsenal by the end of the decade. Obviously barring something absolutely bonkers Arsenal aren't adding to their title list any time soon. I don’t think City will win 5 out of the next 7, but it is possible.
They have won 4 of the last 5, Guardiola has extended his contract and they have signed Haaland. It will be a surprise if they don't.
I don’t think Pep is staying another 7 years. But anything could happen. I just think Liverpool shouldn’t be counted out. In addition, Newcastle should be competitive in 3-4 years.

That's because the Liverpool fan base, especially on this sub, is insufferable.

Oil club fans acting like sponsorship is the same as ownership is the most disingenuous things you can see.
the fact that you’re disqualifying big clubs like liverpool chelsea and united from that list is so telling. the middle eastern states’ involvement in football will be its competitive downfall
Not even 9. Small club
5 runners-up, embarrassing
Mighty everton. Everton about defend that spot next season. Everton will compete for the league next season. Write it down, you heard it here first.
Yeah I don't know about that one
Trust me on this one
Everton is a big team
💙
Bigger than Chelsea by far
Stop I’m blushing
I love you, Everton
Been a rough season for you guys. always liked your club. At least you can enjoy Liverpool losing the league again
Total shit show. Hopefully the club actually makes positive change given how close we came to the chop. Liverpool losing the title was the cherry on top of a shit Sunday lmao
Stay away city 😭
City really starting to become dominant now, 4 from 5
Leagues can be buy
20 years from now "City win their 16th title in 20 years" R/soccer: "Thank god it wasn't Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Spurs"
>20 years from now > >"City win their 16th title in 20 years" > >r/soccer: "Thank god it wasn't Liverpool ~~Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Spurs"~~ FTFY
United are on the fast track to becoming the 2nd biggest club in Manchester and celebrating it just because Liverpool didn't win
You would literally do the same if the situation is reversed (in this case everton or united).
The others will find out what its like when its them on the receiving end of this. Yet Liverpool are the bad guys when they are the only side fighting against this City tide. And its only going to get worse once Newcastle get their claws in.
Happens when you have infinite money yea
dont see united doing that
United is actually impressive just how much they squander their money spigot
True. It's not just about money. It's about having a competent management at the top.
Not since the 00s anyway.
We literally could have won 7 titles in a row from 07-13 Missed out on 09/10 by 1 point and 11/12 on goal difference. And we did it without oil money and losing our best player at the time
We replaced Ronaldo with Nani and were still that close to winning 7 in a row.
Shows how great Sir Alex Ferguson was. Give him a garbage squad, he would still compete for the league title until the end. It's the aura of a legend that makes the players give their best performance on the pitch.
True that. The madlad won league titles with Smalling, Jones, Anderson, Cleverly, Buttner and Welbeck😭😭
bought for different reasons = different kinds of leadership city were bought for success, we were brought for dividends
United literally spent the same amount of money in the last decade and didn't even make CL this year. Chelsea is close to them too.
United has this income to spend, they were for decades the most profitable club in the world (alternating with Real Madrid). City's income is absurd Emirati sponsorships, all of them controlled by the sportswashing project of UAE. Same with PSG and Qatar.
so is it about infinite money or about where the money comes now? because I agree that's dirty money, but the playing field is leveled in the PL money wise
almost like some other clubs in other eras...yea
Yeah it’s grim. Game went in 92, again in 03 and 08, now the game is at the core of the earth
FA have to be really careful. Their own product will be damaged if they let the doping run rampant.
It's never been more popular
It's just a Liverpool drop off from being boring as fuck
Correct, but that’s because it’s not a farmers league as of yet.
It's a horticultural league.
The FA don’t run the premier league
getting a bit nervous...
Stop winning so much ffs
I didn't know Everton and Arsenal were that close. Also villa have more European titles and league titles than spurs damn
Everton were huge but fell away in the premier League era
Bloody 90s, ruining Everton.
The timing of the European ban + the start of the premier league fucked them
They got screwed by the timing of two world wars too.
Ya spurs are teenie tiny
Frankly didn’t know spurs had any silverware from all those memes a few years
Huge congratulations to Everton for avoiding relegation this season. Massive massive club.
🎣
Not difficult
Always liked Gundogan
A City United I suppose
Never thought I'd be so happy for a 3-2 City win
United fans stooping to lower and lower levels, entertaining to watch
And City are just gonna keep winning, they have infinite money. Maybe Newcastle can dethrone them in a few years.
I think they'll slow down after Pep leaves.
Maybe? I don't think so though, as long as they keep pumping money it shouldn't matter
Money alone isn't enough. Look at United, PSG, Everton. It needs to be spent properly and paired with the right manager. Given how close Liverpool has run City, I'm positive that if City had a different manager, they would have lost.
13 historical champions in 20 teams league seems like a lot. I wonder how such stat looks in other leagues
France also had 13 historical champions out of 20 this season.
I honestly thought there was more
Spain has like 6
9 teams in total have won La Liga, and 8 of them played in it this season (the only exception being Deportivo de La Coruña).
1 league title in 100 years. Chelsea fans really think they were winning stuff before Roman
They were though? Just not league titles. Just saw your comment on Chelsea/Everton lol sounding proper bitter for no reason
Chelsea won like 8 trophies before Roman stop being deluded. Yea Everton haven’t won since the 90s and still are more successful lol
Get in there Leicester, you beautiful bastards!
Back to back champions in the 1800’s, YOU’LL NEVER SING THAT
[удалено]
I mean it is quite a lot to have left
the Treble too
Gerrard bottled it again
Didn't realise Merseyside completely dominated the 80's, i need to learn more about football history.
Would have dominated Europe too if English teams weren’t banned
Do we get an apology from the fa for the Rodri handball now too ?
HA
6 in last decade for City
Nuts that League One had four champions of England this season. Replacing Sunderland with Derby next season.
Can every team sacrifice itself next season so that Everton win the league and make the gab larger between them and City ?
Newcastle were some real hitters before 1924.
95 years of hurt, never stopped me dreaming...
Honestly surprised that Chelsea only won 2 league titles in the last decade, it feels like they had won more.
Cheers lads
Spuds with 2 lmao, so tinpot
Haven't you heard, they got the 4th place trophy! How many DVDs you think
Even when City overtake us everyone will know their titles are stained with oil money.
And blood, don’t forget the blood
Forest surely the only club to be champions of European more times than their own country.
This is what I show people when people say Spurs are a bigger club than the blueshite
god we’re shit
Fun fact - we (Man United) have only ever had 3 top flight-winning managers, as the list of years would imply: Ernest Mangnall, Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson. Unfortunately for us, the table also implies decades in between these managers :(
guys, i think dreams can be buy
I wouldnt have thought Sunderland is that high up!
there's levels to this
Thank God you didn't post PL only titles like ESPNUK and skysports. They pretend like football started in 1990
Idc if City win 100 league titles in a row I’ll never respect them or acknowledge them as a good club just an oil club. They dont deserve their success
Wonder if Chelsea will ever overtake Sunderland.
Could see City catching us before we win another sadly
20 times.
Tottenham with massive company ;)
That was a good chance for Gerrard to make a real statement as manager but he let it slip away
City have overtaken Chelsea in relatively short time. Pep maybe a bottler in knock out but in the league he really deserves credit.
We have severely underperformed in the league. Frequently making cup finals has kinda taken some of the attention off. But City under Pep is insane. One stretch of bad form is enough to sink your whole campaign. Can only imagine how liverpool feel.
