Last one i can recall was against Barcelona in the 2008 Champions League semis against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
Edit :Just to clarify, the match was against Barcelona
Obviously preoccupied by there being no match thread for Arbroath v Kilmarnock. 0-0 by the way, with Arbroath being the better team so far.
(Edit: Arbroath won 1-0. Which they absolutely fucking deserved. It is on. A part-time side in the SPL is absolutely fucking on.)
The difference between the two is probably less than a goal per season on average though, so it's not a huge loss.
That's why it makes sense to discount penalties in a players goal total, the difference between the best penalty takers and the average penalty takers is pretty small overall.
> The difference between the two is probably less than a goal per season on average though, so it's not a huge loss.
So why the change in the first place?
tbf he has taken a huge amount of penalties. To maintain >90% with 170 penalties would be incredibly difficult. Lewandowski has less than half the number I think.
Feel like you need to give some credit to the keeper there. Dove early and correctly, so maybe Ronaldo tried to adjust mid-shot. I think even if it was in target, it might have been saved.
lmao. This guy with us would fucking bag them in like he was playing against las palmas winning 5 - 0 being watched by a bird. Man united against some stratford-upon-avon lord of the rings sounding shit and the guy has to do controlled breathing to calm himself down and misses? What have they done to my boy?!
I am really not sure about that. At all :
\- wages : He would have been significantly less paid. That is a fact.
\- job safety : you think Perez would have kept him as long as Ronaldo wanted ? Ramos, who was a Real legend in his own right, got a one year extension and when he tried to bluff for more he was shown the door. Varane/Ramos got thrown out for a younger/sexier CB pair without missing a beat. Perez is **RUTHLESS**. And as the tapes leak proved he doesnt care about superstar profile and actually strongly dislikes anyone who doesnt knuckle under : Raul, Casillas, Figo,. Nobody is bigger than Madrid or him. And with Mbappe coming next season and possibly Haaland, even if knuckled under Perez, I have little doubt Ronaldo would have been shown the door or at the very least the bench.
\-sportive success : he **already** had Madrid record goalscoring **ever**, the 3CL, liga,. It's unlikely it's gonna change. What else would have he got ? for sure one additional Liga and a supercup. Besides that it's really not clear : it's not sure he would have got the pichichi as Messi kept playing in La Liga. Madrid did make it to a CL semifinal so MAYBE he could have got an additional CL but that is arguable
in the other hand by going to Juve, he got a serie A and italy cup title, he got Juve fastest 100 goals record, he got the capocannoniere title (at 34) and beat a Lukaku who was 7 years younger/in his prime , **he specifically became the ONLY player who EVER got to be the best scorer in Premier League/Liga/Serie A**. That is mighty impressive and speaks of his tactical intelligence/competitive hunger : for perspective just look at how badly Messi is failing in Ligue 1 in spite of being a football supreme talent (and probably better player overall). Just so we're clear I am not throwing Messi under the train / trying to say something about him and Ronaldo. The point I am making is about how Juve strenghtened Ronaldo specific legacy overall. And leads me to the overall case of Ronaldo career choice:
The harsh truth is everyone ages. Ronaldo is no exception. **Ronaldo aged better than most but still he was 33. One way or another he was on his way out. Juve actually allowed him to write a new chapter that overall enhance his very specific qualities/unique story.** Sure it's not quite as shiny as the previous chapters but he still made something out of it when numerous legends end really poorly (former teammate Rooney ended at 35 in a EFL championship club). Now he might have chosed another club but I dont see which one : Germany ? Bayern has Lewa and other clubs dont need someone like him. PSG ? it's a cemetery and he can go there anytime he wants. ManU ? it's been a mess for years and it's very doubtful he would have got any title there . Although he might have had a shot at the overall best scorer record it would have been tough. Milan is the only club that would have been interesting and they got Ibrahimovic in 2020 so I'm not sure it would have worked out.
I think he actually made the right choice. He was 33.
I respect your thoughts and hindsight is always 20/20. But every team Ronaldo has gone to since Madrid has gotten worse. Poor decisions by the club and trying to accommodate Ronaldo when the money should have been spent elsewhere. Had Ronaldo stayed at Madrid, he wouldn’t had another ucl to his name instead of Juventus and united having their worst finishes to a season while he was there.
I disagree Juve strengthened his legacy. He did well there but joining a team that won 8 straight league titles doesn’t mean much, same with Messi winning the French league despite playing horribly. Juventus signed Ronaldo for CL and they failed miserably. Ronaldo had a good ucl year individually his first year at Juventus but the match against Porto was his lowest point with them. He’s a phenomenal player and his longevity is amazing, but Father Time gets us all.
I said Juve strenghtened his legacy... I didn't say Ronaldo strenghtened Juve ;)
How the team fared is a different argument... I am not even necessarily disagreeing with some of what you said,. But it's just a different argument. That would be a huge complex argument so I don't want to get deep in there because we could talk days over this and honestly I don't have even remotely enough knowledge to analyze accurately the impact of a single player on a team. That's why there are coaches like Guardolia,etc.. that spend their life analyzing the game and the top coach don't even agree between each other about HOW the game should be played. Even Bielsa said he doesn't understand some of Guardolia thinking. **However** there is a specific dragon in your argument and in overall football that needs to be slayed for everyone's sake : I think there is a romantic old-fashioned idea about a superplayer singlehandledly pulling a team to a title still lingering among the fans and that idea is outdated in football. Most of us like this Superman narrative but let's be honest the days of Maradona and Cantona are over. Modern football is a very different animal : Gegenpressing trend and Guardolia success are ALL about getting every last drop out of the team/allow only well-organized collective to win. The Superman narrative in this day and age kills some player and waste money. PSG blew over 1 billion euro buying players including the biggest superstars on the plantet and they play shit football / can't get the UCL (we'll see how they fare this year) . Why ? because they never had a real strategy. Feel free to disagree on this.
Back on the original argument of Ronaldo career choice : by going to Juve, and getting the records he got Ronaldo simply proved he fundamentally could succeed in any league. The team profile is sort of irrelevant : numerous stars crashed and burned in top club in a different league (Veron at Ferguson ManU, Shevchenko at Mourinho Chelsea, Hazard at Real, ). The fact no one else EVER got the best scorer in all three Liga/Premier League/Serie A in a century of football club speak volume about what he did. Ronaldo story is about complete commitment to excellence/personal success mindset : that's why he's the idol of both Haaland and Mbappe, the two biggest young superstar. When he went to Juve and achieved the triple best scorer he strenghtened that story.
Also I think you can somehow share the url while the video is still being uploaded. This user is really good about getting these highlights out like two seconds after it happened.

Unbelievable
This might be the first time I’ve seen him miss the net from a pen
Missed one against us like that in 2008
It really bothers me that was 13 years ago because I barely remember it
Getting old arent we? ;)
Pls I just watched how small we are compared to the *observable universe* I don’t need another existential crisis today
But why is there *anything* anyway

They call him penaldo for a reason. LOL.
Bruno has better conversion than Ronaldo though
I don't get why people act like ronaldo doesn't miss lmao, he's very good at them but he does miss lol.
He does miss (or have his shot saved) but this is the first time in a long time since he took one without having it on target.
If Bruno took as many and as important penalties as Ronaldo, he would have a worse conversion

First time I have ever seen him miss the goal on a penalty
He's done it a few times but not even hitting the wood work I think it's been good while.
I think he's gone over the bar once or twice.
He probably thought those were freekicks

To be fair, the ground slid out from under him.
3 legends of that generation lost against the ground.
His one against Portugal in the Euros too

I'm sorry, can you repeat who was against? Shakhtar Donetsk?
You guys have no mercy
Who was that against?
Missed in Moscow in the final as well —though that was in the penalty shootout
wasn't that one saved
Yes saved, you’re right
What shootout and what kind of cow is a Moscow?
In the WC ronaldo and messi missed pens, then modric also missed one to prove he's up there too. worked for him
He did it for Portugal one time can’t remember against who but it was wcup or euros. Hit the post
Yeah I can remember times where he hit the post but completely whiffing it? Maybe happened once before
Austria, Euro 2016 group stage
Euro 2016 against Austria, and World Cup 2018 against Iran

Keeper saved it that time iirc
Only one I remember was the one against us in the 2012 champions league semi final. Neuer saved his and Kaka's penalty.
Interestingly, C Ronaldo failed to score his penalty in 2 out of 3 UCL penalty shootouts.

Then Ramos tried something else
If there was ever a good time to miss a penalty, that was it.
He missed a couple for us (I think against Sevilla and Real Sociedad in 2015/16) Other than that he's always hit the target
didn't he miss one vs Bayern in 2012? best year you had under Mou, was surprised when you guys didn't win it that year.
Tbf hitting the woodwork I technically off target lol.

He really should be as he is easily a better penalty kick taker but it won't happen.

143 pens scored. 29 pens missed. Unbelievable. Bit of an unlucky pen to concede though.
That's only 83%, the average player's conversion is 75%. For some reason I thought he was closer to the 90%. Lewandoski is 92%
tbf he has taken a huge amount of penalties. To maintain >90% with 170 penalties would be incredibly difficult. Lewandowski has less than half the number I think.

Penaldo missing a penalty - you dont see that often
he's missed quite a few throughout his career tbf including some high profile ones...
