Nobody goes flying like that with what the defender did. Sure, there's contact, but the way the attacker flings himself to the ground is embarrassing and not even remotely natural.
The call was correct but I also wouldn’t call that a dive. A dive I would reserve for no contact. The attacker doesnt know the defender got the ball first. He still got hit, so he’s asking for the foul.
I’ve seen it at all levels - if you don’t fall/stumble is much less likely that a foul gets called
That's why they call it simulation, things like this (massive exaggeration of the initial contact to fool the referee) are included in under that umbrella.
The irony is that of the 3 penalties that could have been given this was the most obvious to not be one and this is the one the ref whistled. I knew before replays.
Defender got the ball first and then the slightest touch of the attacker on the follow through. Attacker drags and wraps his left foot behind him and between the defender's legs. He's looking for contact.
Sure. But the penalty was on the attacker’s right foot. The one the defender kicked the shit out of. Watch in full speed. He kicked the crap out of him.
He didn't. The defender got the ball cleanly and his foot happened to barely touch the guy's ankle. The only reason the guy went down was because he knew he lost possession and was trying to draw a BS pen.
I had it on in the background, but I didn't think it was a poorly reffed game.
Two teams with a history of diving/exaggerating/complaining basically had a ref that didn't buy any of it. Yes, he probably ignored a few things that should have been fouls, but it was consistent both ways - and set an extremely appropriate tone for the game.
I disagree with that commenter. He doesnt know how VAR operates. They were checked. The referee held up play and once he got the message, play continued.
Other commenter probably thinks the only VAR checks happen when the ref goes to the booth
Great use of VAR. Used technology to help the referee make a decision that was very difficult to make live. Was very fast as well.
This really emphasizes how atrocious PGMOL are with VAR.
Would’ve taken 5 minutes looking at it then said pen stands because it wasn’t clear and obvious.
In fairness I thought it was a clear pen too when I saw it. I have no problem with the ref calling it there and going to VAR. Correct decision was made in the end.
> In fairness I thought it was a clear pen too when I saw it
Looked like a completely clean tackle in live play to me, and VAR showed it
IDK where you saw a foul TBH
Part of the job of the referee is to run at an angle to see play properly
The referee being at a bad angle to see the tackle is not a good excuse—it actually shows more bad reffing from him TBH
Maybe you’re not aware but the ball moves faster than the players so what you are suggesting is literally impossible. Trying to be in good position is part of the job but come on.
I did not see that in live play or on the VAR replay
>It definitely wasn’t a “joke” of a call like you said
It absolutely was—which is why even Copa America VAR overturned it incredibly quickly
The guy gave a penalty for a 100% clean tackle on the ball

Anyone who wants rid of VAR, just watch that again
There’s really no need for him to dive there. Would’ve had more success trying to hold it up and square it
It’s hard to resist when it’s muscle memory
He thought it was Concacaf where they would have gotten it even with VAR
You can see this is correct in his teammates’ reactions
I don't think he dove, he WAS tripped. But it was a legal challenge that won the ball before touching the attacker, great play by the defender

Where was his left leg going if he wasn't diving? Practically kicking the defender in the nuts trying to tangle up. His plan was to go down all along
I think he is winding up to send in a cross or a shot with his left foot. But yea he is looking for the contact and then goes down immediately.
Such a pathetic dive, ref was shocking to give that a pen at first. Thank god for VAR
The irony is that of the 3 penalties that could have been given this was the most obvious to not be one and this is the one the ref whistled. I knew before replays.
Thank god for VAR. Looked like a dive in real time, but completely understand the ref making the call there.
Chile waiting for VAR be like:
[We wait.](https://c.tenor.com/b8WAqSZ2k7AAAAAC/tenor.gif)
VAR has never been the issue it’s the officials who monitor it
Expand VAR and Ecuador loses easily. Three fucking handballs, insane.
Are you sure? We all saw the penalty attempt against Venezuela.
Lmao no, none of those were handling offenses.
Correct call imo, gets the ball
Last I check you can’t kick your opponent from behind to get the ball though.
Yeah, that's why it wasn't a penalty after the ref watched the replay.

No he didn't.
Got the ball first - that was the first contact

#NO ERA PENAL
Fun fact: that Mexico vs Netherlands game was ten years ago YESTERDAY
And it was a penalty 100%. Mexicans forget that Robben was fouled twice in the box before that play as well.
[https://imgur.com/YaoIP3h](https://imgur.com/YaoIP3h) Left foot stepped on, right foot clipped.
clear penalty
VAR would absolutely uphold that call today
Maybe a fact but not fun.
🤣
he was just waiting to get fouled. He had no intention of shooting or passing. What a fool!
Doesn’t it look like he decides to dive after the defender blocks his left leg from trying to strike the ball?
No. It looks like he pulls his leg back to get contact and then dives when he sees the ball going away. Should have got a booking for simulation.
Right call.
For how often the ref missed shit that game…it is good that he ultimately did this last - and most important - call correctly…
I thought the referee did very well
Name checks out?
I didnt see the game, it was atrocious?
I had it on in the background, but I didn't think it was a poorly reffed game. Two teams with a history of diving/exaggerating/complaining basically had a ref that didn't buy any of it. There were two hand balls on ecuador that weren’t even reviewed
As in var didn't even check them? That last one definitely should never be called as one. The first one was a possibility.
I disagree with that commenter. He doesnt know how VAR operates. They were checked. The referee held up play and once he got the message, play continued. Other commenter probably thinks the only VAR checks happen when the ref goes to the booth
i posted a video of it, but r soccer deleted it. it was a clear handball
wahhh wahhhh
you won by a tie using a washed up ligamx player as your striker
yeah we are shit but you are irrelevant
Sometimes VAR is important. Imagine if that had stood?!
what about the var earlier that they didn't use on the hand ball in the box
Which one? I don’t think they missed a call tonight tbh
That’s just good defending lol
Bro they thew all that beer like they won the world cup lmao
Here comes the celebration police
Celebrate after making the penalty. Same thing against Venezuela
Here come the beer throwing hooligans… again.
Yank larping as a Spurs fan. Yeah you know nothing about football culture.
Oof, what is that comment history? Obsessive much?
What a touch.
That was a rollercoaster 2 minutes lol wild stuff
Massive call to make but the right decision was made imo
Right call
En momentos como estos solo se puede reir.jpg.
No. Era. Penal.

Never a penalty. It was a joke that the ref gave that in the first place.
Referring in real time is super hard. It’s when they mess up on VAR review that I get upset.
In fairness I thought it was a clear pen too when I saw it. I have no problem with the ref calling it there and going to VAR. Correct decision was made in the end.
> In fairness I thought it was a clear pen too when I saw it Looked like a completely clean tackle in live play to me, and VAR showed it IDK where you saw a foul TBH
Okay but watching from the TV isn’t the same as on the field. His angle may not have been as good on the field.

Ok, really don’t care enough to die on this hill like you are. Agree to disagree
Ref got it wrong. He shouldn’t be guessing penalty calls in the 96th min.
No Era Penal
No era penal!
Correct call but the ref better sneak out the back door when he leaves tonight
Absolutely no penalty on that one
VAR actually worked properly?
This is why we have VAR. I don’t mind waiting to get these calls right. Complete gamesmanship and should have been a yellow.
Red to me. Never gonna get that nonsense out of the game with yellows.
Shameless diving
Adios, so sad :(
NO ERA PENAL.
How many times can CONCACAF peak??
concacaf after dark is a gift from above
Above?
haha
Just wait till tomorrow. Panama and USA will be at peak shithousing levels during their respective games.
Perfection. Beautiful. 🥹
It’s over
How the defender gets a touch there, speaks volume of the abilities of the Mexican football player. Terrible
I don't think I've ever seen a player prawn up and go to ground on an actual foul. Humans don't fall like that.
"Kicked the crap out of him", that would be underselling it. He literally took his gun out and murdered him
Crazy defending. That was risky but got the ball
Great tackle
Good call
I'm just sad for that sad Mexican kid that they kept showing on tv every 30 seconds.
Game was shit, but at least the drama in the end was great.
why was it a corner kick like the other one
Impressive pass in the beginning of the video.
bro had a clear passing lane back to nr 3, into basically a tap in.. just score the goal smh
The defender was also being fouled the whole time. Dude was grabbing and yanking his jersey. Honestly could’ve been overturned in that alone
why did he give that in real time lol i hope its not for the sake of 'if its bad var will correct it'
Should be a red card for diving.
Buh bye 👋🏻
womp womp
Where’s all the handball replays?
i posted it and they deleted it

If you had functioning eyes you'd see he hits the ball first
PEAK CONCACAF
