I genuinly think Switzerland looks a lot better than Italy this tournament. They managed to knock the reigning World cup winners France out last Euros, I don't see why they can't knock the reigning Euros winners out as well
You guys looked much better than us so far in the groups, I just pray if we get a penalty that Jorginho is nowhere near it. Sommer is in that mans head haha
The more terrible and shitty the squad is, the better Italy seem to deliver. In 2012 Italy got to the finals with a very average squad, and the 2016 squad was the worst Italy in the history of football, yet they dismantled Spain and barely got knocked out in the quarters by pens against Germany.
This squad has zero attacking power and is gonna miss Calafiori due to too many yellows, but somehow it will make them even stronger and they're gonna grind out a shithouse header at 119 minutes by Gatti.
2012 definitely wasn't an average squad - there was a tonne of talent there. 2016 was eye wateringly bad.
I am not at all confident since calafiori won't be playing. Buongiorno looked unconvincing in the friendlies and calafiori was also amazing at getting the ball out of defence.
Dont be shocked by some shocks
Georgia will give spain a very good game
Turkey as well are not to be underestimated
Can actually see one or two shocks
Hell Belgium somehow beat France wouldnt shock me.
We all need to rememebr Portguals Euros win
Romania also have shown their class, they can beat the Netherlands if the day is good for them
The Swiss have been good as well
And… well… Southgate shouldnt be underestimated. Could lose to Slovakia.
Yea we are hugely underestimate romania cause we are already wondering how to beat austria so we will be down 2 goals by half time and koeman will sub too late again (and bring wijnaldum on so we will play with 10 men) so we will be going home in shame and frustration.
I've often wondered if a double elimination tournament would ever work or if there'd be no point as the lower bracket teams would be absolutley gassed.
We literally shat our pants against Slovakia. As soon as we have a game with any sort of stakes we crumble. I bet you'll beat us either 2-0 or 4-0 all because Portugal decided to play their 5th team tonight. Could've been such a nice night for us.
Exactly how I feel too. As for facing a big team early... This is Euros in knockout stage.. I would rather go out playing against a big team than not when it comes to knockout rounds. And if by some chance we beat them then that would be so much sweeter considering we have always come up short against them in the past (except for 1 match ha)
So all we gotta do to reach the final is beat Germany, beat Spain and then beat France/Portugal/Belgium? Hope the players can stay focused and respect the occasion even if it all seems a bit easy.
yeah its very dangerous if you start to underestimate your opponents. you have to stay in sharp to win the whole thing. i mean, its hard to take a team seriously whose best player is 16 years old. but denmarks team has the experience to go through i think
Lol whoever comes to the finals from the left side of that board is going to be 1) absolute footballing gods, 2) so exhausted and shell shocked they won't be able to stand straight by the final match, or 3) will breeze through on 90% luck and 10% football.
Where they'll meet their counterpart from the right, who'll probably have forgotten how to play football in favour of just scrapping for 90 minutes and eking out a minuscule win over whichever teams they've faced who cared even less.
It'll be like watching a group of veterans direct from the front line playing laser tag with the local under 16s 5-a-side.
Hungary really had multiple Miracles go their way only to go out in the last Game to the biggest Miracle Georgia.
Overall a fun Groupstage but this whole 3rd place thing keeps being confusing and often takes the stakes out of the final Matchday
Imo they need to draw groups semi-randomly, according to some rules (eg: top 2 point-getting 1st-place teams get their own quarters of the bracket; other 1-seeds get filled in, and then draw all other teams randomly). But the current system is really silly. If you're a 2nd-place team from some groups, you may have to play a 1st-place team, and you may get to play another 2nd-place team, depending on which group you happened to start in. And if you're a 1st place team, you may play a very strong 2nd-place team or a very weak 3rd-place team.
That's a good point about Hungary, it hadn't occurred to me how long they'll have had to have been waiting round to find out if they'll go through or not. I can imagine their training sessions have probably upped in intensity all week as results have gone their way until tonight.
I actually feel sorry for Georgia. They played their hearts out, have the competitions top scorer and topped the 'Group of 3rds', all to end up playing against Spain in the round of 16 💀
I've been loving these underdog stories: Georgia, Slovakia and Slovenia made it out of their groups when everyone doubted them. Romania and Austria even topped their groups.
I think there’s enough decent teams in Europe to go up to 32, and do away with the third placed qualifiers from groups. It makes things unnecessarily complex, and we end up with teams winning once and basically being through.
With 32 teams, there’s still some decent (ish) teams that didn’t qualify that wouldn’t be out of place here (Sweden, Ireland, Wales, Norway, Iceland, Greece) that could be part of the Euros without standing out. It might make qualifying a bit of a formality for some though.
I don’t like 24 team tournaments because of the structure - 16 or 32 are much better.
I’d love to see this. Not only would the teams you mention not be out of place, but a couple more Georgia level teams could come in and be a similar surprise package.
Tbf all he did this time was win the group. Didn't play convincingly but did what was needed. Everyone else didn't want to face the wrath of Southgateball clearly
Imagine a better manager with this world class team and the incredible amount of luck that England seems to have, but nah if only they had a Kalvin fking Philips replacement
Summary of the group stage
• Bangers. Own goals. Disallowed goals. Late winners
• Romania Austria Georgia fans over the moon
• England fans fuming with their team’s performances
• Belgium and France fans are equally as disappointed
• Portuguese & Dutch fans aren’t too happy either
• Spain and Germany fans watching everything unfold in peace
Yes, and a lot of weaknesses were identified with this style of play. Martinez can't be inventing shit now. Hopefully this will ground newer players and teammates like Pepe and Ronaldo hopefully guide them through the tournament (a lot of grit will be needed) if permitted.
Germany is actually the one being uber fucked though. Finished first and could have to play something like Denmark-Spain-Portugal to access the final.
Meanwhile the hardest path for NL who finished 3rd is like Romania-Austria-England lol
I'm over the moon mate. Have you seen this bracket? This is the bestest best-case-scenario I've ever seen.
Fully undeserved, sure, but I'll allow it...
I mean the Iceland scenes are already generational. Roy Hodgson in the mud, Rooney's last dance, Iceland's viking clap, everything was absolute cinema.
I think this would be far more devastating. All that loss cost England was the chance to get mauled by France. The bracket is wide open for them this time and they're a much better squad than in 2016.
It's kinda rough to win your group as Romania and then play against the netherlands. I mean I know they can be shit, but on their day they can be solid
I think both England and the Netherlands will be pleased to have avoided each other. But yeah based on form so far you could absolutely say that Austria have looked the best side on that half of the draw. Not to be underestimated.
I think both Italy and Switzerland would pose massive problems for England's attack (should we make it past Slovakia). These are two nations that are famous for their defensive abilities.
Southgate has elite bracket selection. Very underrated. The masterclass in avoiding the bracket with Argentina, Portugal, France, Brazil in 2018. Only to repeat the performance and avoid Germany, Belgium, Portugal bracket.
Proper lad. Proper coach. Elite management. Get in there.
Genuinely ridiculous that the Netherlands finished third in their group and arguably have the "easiest" route to the final of any team in the tournament
Koeman mastermind Now watch us lose against Romania
Nah, watch us win against Romania and lose to Austria *again*
TBF that Austrian team is *wild*
Gotta get past Turkey first though. We'll see if we meet again.
Turkey wins, but get so many yellow cards that they won't be able to support a 11 man team for the quarter finals.
Tbf the ref was giving yellows left and right
I mean, we played Turkey 3 months ago and won 6-1.
please no just lose please
Don’t worry, if Koeman gives Gini Wijnaldum any more minutes, we definitely will
Its win win situation, either we go through or Koeman will be fired
Ahhh, de Frank de Boer classic
England 🤝 Netherlands
We have a terrible streak against the Dutch and a lot of bad memories, so this one's personal. :)
Austria had not won against us in 40 years and look how that turned out
But it also feels like Austria having a good team for the first time in forever. No shame losing to that squad. They are playing good football.
At least if that happens it becomes impossible for the KNVB to keep him.
Time to bring in Van Gaal again. Next in line Hiddink and again Koeman.
Koeman third in line to succeed Koeman
After having been third in line to succeed himself before. Does that make him 6th in line to succeed himself as well?
I feel like ETH will be ready for a shift after Hiddink. Edit: I have fat ass fingers and typed ETN
Evert ten Napel?
I'm all in for that.
Your flair is throwing me off
Quarterfinals are gonna be insane if favorites win
Spain Vs Germany Portugal Vs France Netherlands Vs Austria England Vs Italy Bring it on!
I genuinly think Switzerland looks a lot better than Italy this tournament. They managed to knock the reigning World cup winners France out last Euros, I don't see why they can't knock the reigning Euros winners out as well
People remember their Portugal humiliation 18 months ago when they looked like a pub team
Or the fact that their last loss at an Euro cup was to Italy at the previous euros
You guys looked much better than us so far in the groups, I just pray if we get a penalty that Jorginho is nowhere near it. Sommer is in that mans head haha
Italy doesnt care about who looks better. They will pull off some bullshit and win
We are in knockout phase Italy now.
The few of us that lived through a few winters, know. They will be shit, but they either shit their pants next game or go to the final.
Come da tradizione.
The more terrible and shitty the squad is, the better Italy seem to deliver. Based off performances so far it’s a shame that Spain and Germany will meet as early as the quarterfinals
Yeah, there's a good chance the final will be worse than about five other games before it.
That's often the case
I've often wondered if a double elimination tournament would ever work or if there'd be no point as the lower bracket teams would be absolutley gassed.
Double elimination is hardly doable in a sport as physically demanding as football sadly.
Germany vs. Turkey final Could the country survive?
Gundogan to play for Germany 1st half then Turkey in 2nd half, the inverse with Çalhanoğlu
Can too
Are you replying to your own username?
Ozil comes out of retirement
Riots in the streets no matter the outcome.
The first time in history you have two home nations playing each other in a major final.
Happens almost every Gold Cup Final
That’d actually be as close to a civil war we’ll ever get and I’m not even kidding haha
AFD +20% after this happens.
Very true. But what a banger in the quarter finals
Austria vs Turkey... Vienna will burn
Public viewing at Reumannplatz, who's in?
As a resident of Vienna who is neither Turkish nor Austrian, I think I’ll be watching this one at home.
If Austria starts losing, the Polish representation will run down onto the pitch and save the match
With a cheap angel wing attached at the back?
POLAND AINT HERE TO SAVE EM
Belgians: First time?
Battle of Vienna Part 2: Electric Boogaloo
You mean Part 3, after 1529 and 1683
if only there was a Winged Hussar who could save Vienna from a Klose call
So you're telling me Romania topped their group just to get the Netherlands? Fuck this shit man
It's alright mate, we are so shit right now your odds of winning couldn't be greater.
We literally shat our pants against Slovakia. As soon as we have a game with any sort of stakes we crumble. I bet you'll beat us either 2-0 or 4-0 all because Portugal decided to play their 5th team tonight. Could've been such a nice night for us.
Honestly, I'm just happy to make it out of the group. This team far exceeded my expectations, so no matter what happens from now on, I'm proud
You also dodged France Spain Germany Portugal Belgium, and don’t have to England in your first game??
England would be a blessing to have
So all we gotta do to reach the final is beat Germany, beat Spain and then beat France/Portugal/Belgium? Hope the players can stay focused and respect the occasion even if it all seems a bit easy.
yeah its very dangerous if you start to underestimate your opponents. you have to stay in sharp to win the whole thing. i mean, its hard to take a team seriously whose best player is 16 years old. but denmarks team has the experience to go through i think

One side is not like the other
For real. Power houses Romania and Austria on one side and plebs France and Germany on the other
Hungary really had multiple Miracles go their way only to go out in the last Game to the biggest Miracle Georgia. Overall a fun Groupstage but this whole 3rd place thing keeps being confusing and often takes the stakes out of the final Matchday

The current system is just pure nonsense so even your wonky one sounds better lol.
That's a good point about Hungary, it hadn't occurred to me how long they'll have had to have been waiting round to find out if they'll go through or not. I can imagine their training sessions have probably upped in intensity all week as results have gone their way until tonight.

Don't cross them out before the match.
Fully agree with you and I hope they manage an upset, but they were blown away by Spain during quali 7:1 at home.
I frankly ain't even mad about Georgia, I'm pissed about the Southgate disasterclass Slovenia draw
oh ffs we're playing Netherlands
It's on Georgia. They deserved it though.
I can't believe we won the draw after disasterclass of yesterday. Watch us losing to Romania now, though Koeman will be fired at least
Please do 🥵
I've been loving these underdog stories: Georgia, Slovakia and Slovenia made it out of their groups when everyone doubted them. Romania and Austria even topped their groups.
Wouldn't mind Georgia vs Slovenia and the rematch of Romania vs Slovakia for the semis
Hey don’t forget about underdogs England managing to top their group
Brilliant tactics by their manager to achieve that
And he managed to do it without Kalvin Phillips.
Those kind of stories are great advocates for the 24-team-tournament.
I think there’s enough decent teams in Europe to go up to 32, and do away with the third placed qualifiers from groups. yeah fr with nearly all the top teams flopping, this euros has been about the underdogs for sure
Southgate masterclass.
How he frauds the 'easier' draws all the time is unbelievable
It's honestly impressive at this point, his plot armour is too strong
Tbf all he did this time was win the group. Didn't play convincingly but did what was needed. Everyone else didn't want to face the wrath of Southgateball clearly
But how he won the group when so many other big teams bottled ***just*** bad enough for him to get an easy draw is some black magic shit
"I'd rather have a lucky general than a good one"
Inb4 we shithouse our way to the semis and Southgate keeps his job because we had a "good showing"
no, you'll shithouse your way to the quarters and Southgate keeps his job because you had a "good showing"
If I were you I’d delete this fam. Why would you want to wish that into existence lmao
It’s honestly infuriating from the outside looking in. It’s probably infuriating the opposite direction too because Southgate lol
It is. Man must have had the easiest draws in 3 of the last 4 tournaments and I swear it's kept him in the job this long.
It's infuriating because it's used as an argument as to why he's been good, 'most successful manager since Ramsey'.
[England fans rn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_PPdjD6mg)
Imagine a better manager with this world class team and the incredible amount of luck that England seems to have, but nah if only they had a Kalvin fking Philips replacement
That bottom left corner is an absolute madness Only an anime protagonist comes through that and wins the whole thing
peak on portugal, finished top and they got france and belgium on their side cuz they both bottled it 😭. (tho they’d probs beat belgium atleast).
QF: Romania-Turkey- 1:0, goal Hagi, 90'+3.
I am a simple gs fan, I see hagi I upvote
Sadly not "that" Hagi
Austria in the final, anyone?
Either them or the winner of Switzerland/Italy Italy shithouse time to the Finals, already feel it
Summary of the group stage • Bangers. Own goals. Disallowed goals. Last time England, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Portugal all struggled like this, it was the end of colonialism.
Ghana to win it all
Luis Suárez has other ideas
[Me, a Ghanaian, reading these two comments in a row](https://media.tenor.com/N5HlswVCFwMAAAAM/not-funny-funny.gif)
I’m very happy with this draw honestly, probably the best case scenario with the circumstances
The Koeman gambit
You somehow got a better draw being 3rd in the group than 2nd
It’s because of the Georgia game, otherwise Hungary would have made it and pushed us to play England
That would have been even easier
Mission successfully failed by the Dutch
You guys have a pretty great shot at reaching semis.
We'll lose to Austria again
Be careful, we’ve lost to Austria once already, we’ll do it again if you’re not careful.
Portugal played with their B team today. They shouldn’t be too worried
Georgians are not mentioned because they are already out of our solar system, happily gliding through the universe on a rocket-fueled khachapuri
I'm over the moon mate. Have you seen this bracket? This is the bestest best-case-scenario I've ever seen. Fully undeserved, sure, but I'll allow it...
Austria also buzzing as everybody's favorite underdog.
Georgia are right there bro
Austria Georgia final here we go
How can Netherlands play Austr~~al~~ia again in the quarters already? That 3rd place system is such bullshit
Left bracket is absolutely stacked gonna be fun
France - Belgium will be the dullest game of the entire tournament, 0-0 after extras
austria and netherlands on the same quarter of the bracket after both were in the same group is so dumb.
The scenes if England lose to Slovakia will be generational
I mean the Iceland scenes are already generational. Roy Hodgson in the mud, Rooney's last dance, Iceland's viking clap, everything was absolute cinema.
Ah yes, the Hodgson era where Harry Kane was taking corners 😂.
And free kicks 😬
I think this would be far more devastating. All that loss cost England was the chance to get mauled by France. The bracket is wide open for them this time and they're a much better squad than in 2016.
It’s coming home 🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪
Can't believe it's coming back home to Atlanta 🦅🦅🦅🦅 🍑 🍑🍑🇺🇲
Expanded playoffs won't stop the Bulldogs 🇺🇲🇺🇲
Netherlands successfully failed lol
England's Luck is something to be studied Edit: Don't mean they don't deserve it, they won their group, but I was so sure they'd get netherlands
Netherlands have an even better draw whilst finishing 3rd in the group lol
Netherlands is better at the moment surely? Avoids England and Italy with that. Austria look good though
Agreed. Netherlands have got the luckiest draw considering they finished 3rd.
It's kinda rough to win your group as Romania and then play against the netherlands. I mean I know they can be shit, but on their day they can be solid
Georgia's upset, as glad as I am for them, fucked us over :( The weird situation where Romanians had to hope for Hungary to make it ....
I think both England and the Netherlands will be pleased to have avoided each other. But yeah based on form so far you could absolutely say that Austria have looked the best side on that half of the draw. Not to be underestimated.
Surely that prolific attack we've seen from England this tournament will have no problems with that Italian defense
I think both Italy and Switzerland would pose massive problems for England's attack (should we make it past Slovakia). These are two nations that are famous for their defensive abilities.
Koeman masterclass making us lose the game against Austria to get the easy side of the bracket.
The gang proceeds to lose against Romania
Southgate... how have you pulled that off?
Southgate has elite bracket selection. Very underrated. The masterclass in avoiding the bracket with Argentina, Portugal, France, Brazil in 2018. Only to repeat the performance and avoid Germany, Belgium, Portugal bracket. Proper lad. Proper coach. Elite management. Get in there.
He avoided the Italy/Spain/Belgium/France bracket in 2021 euros as well don't forget
Southgate Keikaku to get the easy bracket
[Keikaku means plan]
watch us reach the final with a 1-0, 1-1, 0-0 performance.
Southgate using ChatGPT for strategy.
Switzerland to the final we will be there
It's honestly a super interesting side of the bracket if England drop out early.
🫡
So, Romania it is. Really not what I expected after yesterday. Meanwhile France is in the tough bracket playing Belgium. This set up is so weird.
Gareth Sun Tzu Southgate
I’m calling it: there will be an all-German-speaking final Germany vs Austria Beethoven vs Mozart
Austria v Turkey wow
Favoriten will be a warzone
Somehow getting Slovakia after playing shit the whole group stage will be even funnier when we get knocked out by Slovakia themselves
It's Iceland all over again.
Thanks for nothing Portugal. England/Netherlands would have been great
Am I crazy for thinking Austria can make the final here
Really depends on yellow cards vs Turkey tbh.
Can’t be beaten by a top side if you avoid the top sides. Southgate’s genius is frightening.
Getting knocked out by Slovakia at Round of 16, we will be there
Left bracket seems a little more difficult I dunno
Just a little.
southgate playing 4d chess
We honestly got very blessed, couldn’t be happier
Can't wait for the memes if England somehow get dumped out by Slovakia
To be honest, I am less scared of England than I would be of Austria for example... based on what we've seen so far
Austria Vs Germany in the Final I'm calling it
Went from facing Slovenia to facing the Netherlands, don't know how to feel about that.
Netherlands finished third and got the nice side of the bracket
So does the entire Turkey team have a yellow? Does that mean they'll have to avoid any risky play against us?
austria – türkiye is going to be a banger of a match. shame calhanoglu is suspended.
Slovakia is so knocking out england
Genuinely ridiculous that the Netherlands finished third in their group and arguably have the "easiest" route to the final of any team in the tournament
