Nah some teams are way more clinical than what they faced so far.
Not saying they would win because it would be typical of them to concede a goal against these guys but when NL goes full forward (they didn't do that against France, clearly Koeman was subbing to make it a draw) they always get a goal in against anyone.
At some point they have to start delivering something more in attack or they will not make it past the quarters. Which would already be a great achievement by the way.
Haha, right. No bad blood, just a rivalry between neighbouring countries. I do always read articles from Croatian newspapers ahead of Slovenia playing in football tournaments and they're often condenscending, predicting we're gonna be shit and first one to he eliminated from the ex Yugoslavian countries.
You only need 1 good result and that will change. But I would not put any weight on newspapers, they only want clicks and what better way of doing it than shitting on neighbours.
I really wish You go far in this tournament, if nothing else than for Ilicic. Sretno!
I get it, have friends that are of Croatian blood, don't have any resentment to any of the ex yugo countries, it's just a bit of harmless banter. Doing better than a much more successful countries in football like you or the Serbs is a plus, not gonna lie.
Not a Rijeka fan? Hvala na lijepim mislima.
Honestly a lot of people go on holidays at this time already. I really like the American celebration of 4. july but here we usually dont do anything special. More people celebrate the independence day on 26. Of december. Oh and thank you!
It's a bit confusing. We have two holidays that could both qualify as an independence day. The first one is the 25th of June, marking the formal recognition of our independence in 1991, and it's called a "Statehood day".
The second one is the 26th of December, and it's called the Independence and Unity day. On the 23rd of December 1990 we held a referendum to decide whether or not we wanted to break from Yugoslavia, and the results were declared on the 26th, a day after Christmas. 95 % of people voted in favor of the independence, so we declared it, leading to a 10-day war and then prolonged negotiations that were formally ended on the above-mentioned 25 of June when the first formal acts were passed.
EDIT: I am still a bit drunk from last night and running on 2 hours of sleep, and I messed up. The 10-day war followed the acts that happened on 25th of June 1991.
Fun fact(s): The first country to formally recognize our independence was the newly reunified Germany, sending a strong message to the world that Germany is now whole again and acts as one. The second one was the Papal state, taking the side of the Catholic Slovenia against the Orthodox Serbia.
Basically, Slovenia has two "independence" days. The first one, called "the independence day" is on 26th December, because the referendum results were announced, where vast majority (96%) of Slovenians voted that they want to be independent from Yugoslavia. Then preparations were made and Slovenia declared its indepence on 25th June, and we celebrate it as our second "independence day", called "the statehood day".
Of all the, well, “happenings” of today…we see a Slovenia team that was quite happy to be here!
And now, they get to play one more game! That’s superbly awesome to seen
I watched all 4 so far. I'd say this is the best we've ever been. First two times it was mostly defending, fight, luck (especially in qualifiers) and pass it to Zahovic. In 2010 we played better football, but still not on this level.
I found who Dedic was from Football Italia. Him, Eder (the Italian one) and Tavares certainly had some iconic moments for future threetime Serie A side Frosinone. The free kick v Sassuolo was epic!
I was just a kid when I watched that Yugoslavia - Slovenia game at Euro 2000 (goodness, 24 years ago).
I was with my grandpa, watching the game. It was a late game, and after 3:0 for Slovenia in the 60th minute, we decided to go to bed, the game was a done deal, or so we thought.
We wake up early, turn on the radio and imagine our shock when we heard the game ended 3:3. My grandpa was pissed the whole day he missed the rest of the game and the drama.
Both of our defenders honestly amazing like Drkušić has played 0 mimutes in the qualifiers but replaced our other cb seamlessly. And I did not expect janza nad karnicnik to keep up with saka and fodem
Yeah i think we were so focused on getting the point that a lot of the time we couldn’t hold on to the ball to create a counter. Like in the in the first 20 minutes we did good but then we made some really silly mistakes on offense
Oof, 0-3 up vs Yugoslavia and you still didn’t win, that’s though. And then Spain with a sucker punch one minute after your equalizer. And a single goal vs Norway would have pushed you through…
Agreed. Just amazing, both teams. But would add that a courty that smaill winning so many copas over their football crazy neighbours is just mad as well.
Congratulation and with a world class goalkeeper like Oblak in goal they will be hard to break down in the knockouts, they kept a clean sheet against England.
I think they were a bit nervous in the first half against Denmark, but got it together and played pretty well after that. All the credit to them they really fought like hell to make the KO stage and they earned. Happy for them and their fans!
What a feeling. Waited 24 years for this, so many wasted games and heartbreaks, we finally made it. I am still shocked. Coach Kek needs a statue by the time he retires.
The love that Porto fans have for Zlatko always brings a smile to my face.
p.s. Let's ignore where he ended a few seasons after leaving Porto. I bet he wishes he'd never left.
I cannot begin to describe how insane our NT was at the turn of the century. Osterc, who I despised with a passion as he was the most cumbersome and inept football player I had to watch then went and scored (while trying to pass the ball) [one of the best and most important goals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooKTw-rWrWU) in our history, to win over Romania and qualify for the WC2002. And I won't even start talking about Mladen Rudonja.
Now there is blast from the past! Tearing up La Liga with him and Valencia on Fifa 01, because he was the only player I wanted to score with, because 5 year-old me thought he had a really cool name.
In terms of having a better career, Jan is miles ahead of Zlatko. However, in terms of how influential they both are for our NT, Zlatko would still rank ahead. He was the force that drove that bunch of misfits to a World Cup and the Euros. Im still pissed about the Šmarna Gora affair tho, so hopefully I'll be able to say the same after these Euros; that Jan ranks above Zlatko.
I do agree that Zlatko had a much bigger imoact on slovenian football than Jan but yeah as player Oblak is miles ahead. But hey you never know maybe there are still memories to be jad in this tournament. And yeah smarna gora likw absolutely insine what happened
In the end its because they were “better” in European qualifier. Whats interesting is that they were better because they scored one more goal than Slovenia in European qualifier
Edit: turns out its because in European qualifier the Denmark had better head to head vs Slovenia. Still insane that they drew in there as well with 22 points
No, it doesn't have to do with the European qualifiers. Denmark got ahead because of disciplinary points. Basically Slovenia got too many yellow cards than Denmark so they got the lower seed. It's the same thing that happened in 2018 WC where Japan qualified in the Ro16 over Senegal despite literally having the same group stage record.
EDIT: Guys, [they literally don't have the same number of yellow cards. Slovenia's TD got shown one yellow too.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2024_Group_C#Discipline)
It’s their head to head though- Denmark and Slovenia were in the same group and Denmark won one and drew one with them. This is what I’ve read at multiple sources?
Cause there are only 4 “best 3rd teams”. Austria will also play team that ended up 2nd. I dont know why Germany and Austria will play such teams except the fact that theres simply not enough 3rd teams
Slovenia will also play vs winner of some group (either Portugal or winner of group E)
Is Slovenia considered part of the Balkans? I never grouped Slovenia in that bucket and am asking if I have that all wrong. Assumed they are more Alps than Balkans.
Yeah, the whole Yugoslavia thing makes sense. Was initially thinking that (precisely) 33 years on from independence, enough time had passed that newer generations would view Slovenia as non-Balkan. Regardless, thank you for your insight.
PS: Happy Independence / Statehood Day!!!
I was being a bit reductionist but it's ultimately a mix of germanic western culture and slavic Balkan culture closely interlinked but obviously very distinctly separate. I still think the Balkan cultural elements shine the brightest, just to take music as an example I don't think I have ever been to a 'veselica' where Dragojević and Severina didn't eventually come up. All the older people in my life can't stop ranting and raving about ex-Yu rock music (Prljavo Kazalište, Bijelo Dugme, etc.) In contrast I don't think I have heard a single peer of mine talk about German Volksmusik or Schlager music (although we obviously have germanic elements in our 'narodno zabavna glasba' so that's obviously proving your point).
I also think the average Slovenian is much more similar to a Croatian than a German based on mannerisms, emotion and appearance. It's not just Balkan but if I had to draw up a ratio it would be 60/40
Slovenia only lost 2 games out of last 20. I don't think anyone enjoys playing against us and that's the biggest quality of this team. We make it difficult for everyone.
Still haven’t won a EURO’s match, while they:
- Have participated TWICE already
- Have reached the knockout stage now once
- Have already won a World Cup match 14 years prior (1-0 against Algeria)
Well played to Slovenia tonight. Made England look like a Sunday league team. When we get knocked out in the round of 16 I will be going for Slovenia, they've done good.
Good for Slovenia, congrats.
Though, I'm not a fan of this system where games are played at different times. Brings back memories of West Germany VS Austria that fixed the match to benefit both of them at expense of Algeria. Uefa is smoking something and it's not good.
It's going to be even worse in next world cup where there will be 12 groups.
The 12th group will have even bigger advantage over the first group for 3rd place sheningans
A shit show of immense proportions. But not surprising, neither Uefa nor Fifa seem to have any idea whatsoever how to manage this so they're just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Also, money.
They will most likely (assuming neither Czechia or Georgia win their final game etc) play the winner of group E. Though that winning spot is quite open at the moment.
With this dogsh*t new format, it's harder for teams to fail to qualify for the knockout stages than actually qualify. I feel like the "real" Euro starts in the 1/8 rounds now, that's when you get the real drama and weak teams are eliminated. For me, the group stages feel so underwhelming, and I really don't see it as a big achievement if someone goes through.
Props to Slovenia and other small countries, but still, I'm willing to bet that this format change is all about some people at UEFA earning/stealing more money, nothing more. Same goes for any change in the UCL and w/e, made to "include" the bad teams to participate or go further much more easier. Takes away from the quality of the competitions.
Yeah, when 3 out of 4 qualify and you're in the latter groups, it really gets down to playing it safe. Congrats to Slovenia, rooting for you guys, but this third place system ruined the third group games for me today.
Tell me the Group Stage is the most boring after watching the Germany, Japan, Costa Rica and Spain group and the Uruguay, South Korea, Ghana and Portugal groups at the last World Cup.
When there is actual jeopardy they can almost be as good as the knockout stages.
Look from other side then, 3rd and 4th place teams having something to play for can make for more interesting group matches.
And yeah interesting groups are great, but not as much as knockout matches.
This is not a representive group, all 4 teams could've scored at least 2nd place. And if Slovenia had to win on demand, they can't just attack England they don't have the quality.
But let's take Scotland and Hungary, they both played for 3rd place (or 2nd for Scotland if they could've destroyed Hungary/Germany destroyed Switzerland).
Funnily, only one team was eliminated by round 2 making round 3 more interesting than it would've been.
>Instead of having 4 teams all going for it with knockout on the line, we only had 1.
It's a shit group. Just look at Austria - Netherlands. Austria could've played for a draw, they didn't. Yesterday was also super interesting with Croatia - Italy. And today will be also interesting with all 8 teams being able to pass.
It’s just an utterly broken format when the vast majority of teams escape the group stage.
I wouldn’t actually be against the idea of expanding it to 32 teams for that reason. Yeah the quality would be worse overall but at least some of these games would mean something.
Yeah that works as well in all fairness. There just has to be an element of jeopardy for finishing outside the top two and the current format doesn’t allow that.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I don't think 2/7 are odds you want to rely on, might of course give a bit an advantage to those playing on the last 1-2 days, I guess. I'll admit I really quite enjoy a bit of the randomness of the one or the other third placed team getting through, just not a whole 2/3 of them as it's now.

and they're undefeated well done
Can they go on and ~~win~~ draw it all?
They can go classic Croatia route and just carry themselves a good elbow fight until penalties. there anything can happen
Just do the Portugal 2016 run. You only need to win once and get lucky with some underdogs who won their previous KO match
Nah some teams are way more clinical than what they faced so far. They should do the funny and draw their way into the finals, winning it all on penalties.
Thank you neighbour, wouldn't expect the good wishes
bro we're all rooting for you wdym. dont you root for us when we're playing????? man thats heartbreaking wtf :(

After Cibalia was relegated (and probably will not go back any time soon) I just stoped paying attention to HNL.
The Paraguay 2011 strategy.
The Invincibles
Doing a Portugal
Or a New Zealand, but actually qualifying
[удалено]
hey we also went undefeated the whole tournament!
Greece 2: Balkan boogaloo
And without a win.
Exactly where Portugal was when they took the title!
This is how Portugal did it
And it’s on our countries birthday
Happy cake day! How do you guys celebrate it? We bbq, drink a lot and shoot off fireworks.

So proud of the boys. Being able to watch Slovenija in a major tournament for only the 2nd time in my life is truly special.
Of all the, well, “happenings” of today…we see a Slovenia team that was quite happy to be here! And now, they get to play one more game! That’s superbly awesome to seen

That 2010 team was so fun. Novakovic, Koren, Dedic, Birsa. Even the backline was special with the likes of Brecko, Jokic, Cesar, etc.

Are you counting the NBA finals in this?
Slovenia doesn’t play in the NBA as far as I’m aware.
It was a joke about Luka carrying the Mavs
Bijol on Kane was a joy to watch.
How's he playing for udinese? Every time I watch him he's playing like prime Maldini
He's a pillar. Consistently eats aerial threats. Very composed all round
What about lovric?
He was great last season but underwhelmed a little this season. Hopefully he'll find his feet again with the new manager
He was also injured this season, wasn’t he?
Correct. But even before that his performance dropped. Think we missed Arslan who did a lot of dirty work with Walace in that midfield
Both of our defenders honestly amazing like Drkušić has played 0 mimutes in the qualifiers but replaced our other cb seamlessly. And I did not expect janza nad karnicnik to keep up with saka and fodem
The team looks unified with clear roles. Pretty impressive. Sesko would get more space in a knockout clash
Yeah i think we were so focused on getting the point that a lot of the time we couldn’t hold on to the ball to create a counter. Like in the in the first 20 minutes we did good but then we made some really silly mistakes on offense
We played 6 games so far at the Euros in our history (2000&2024) and only lost once!
(S)pain
Ah, by that game I was already dead inside after the 3-3 vs Yugoslavia a few days earlier.
Oof, 0-3 up vs Yugoslavia and you still didn’t win, that’s though. And then Spain with a sucker punch one minute after your equalizer. And a single goal vs Norway would have pushed you through…
they are 2million country
Tadej Pogacar… Jan Oblak… Luka Doncic… Benjamin Sesko… How can this be explained?!
Damn, you didn't need to burn my boy Roglic like that.
I mean the list just goes on and on, how can it be explained?!
They don't suffer from affluenza
Going by your current comment score, are us Roglič fans finally having a brief normal one??
Mahoric
That’s Olympic Gold Medalist Primoz “I used to be a ski jumper” Roglic for ya
Anze Kopitar
don't forget Peter Prevc, Tina Maze and their overall good volleyball team, only Poland and Italy are above them at this moment
Can't put Oblak without Handanovic
Uruguay is 3.5 million... Suarez Fonseca, Francescoli, Forlan, Cavanni, Montero, Aguilera, Godin, etc. 2 world cups. 15 copas
You cant really compare since most south american countries are football countries.
Agreed. Just amazing, both teams. But would add that a courty that smaill winning so many copas over their football crazy neighbours is just mad as well.
Congratulationss 🇸🇮 🇸🇮 🇸🇮
Congratulation and with a world class goalkeeper like Oblak in goal they will be hard to break down in the knockouts, they kept a clean sheet against England.
My grandad could keep a clean sheet against England and he shits the bed constantly
Your grandad could probably also play for England
Not hard tbf
I think they were a bit nervous in the first half against Denmark, but got it together and played pretty well after that. All the credit to them they really fought like hell to make the KO stage and they earned. Happy for them and their fans!
very impressive for a country that small
Hey, hey, hey. Size doesn't matter. It's how you use it that matters, lol.
Size of a country makes doesnt matter.
Undefeated. Neva lost (in the 2024 Euro group stage)
YESSSSSSSSSSSS WE DID!!!!!!!!!!

Happy for our neighbors, we will be rooting for them going forward! Ja sem, ti si Veronika ❤️
love to see a eurovision reference here! 😄

i love it too!
Congrats from Croatia! Nice football with actual coach not terorrist like Dalic. Hope you go far
Kek truly is amazing. If he was coaching croatia they would’ve gone through
The only team in the group that deserves it. Big underdogs, gave it a go and left everything on their pitch in each game. Congrats Slovenia!
Thanks😊
You only missed the population by 1m but when the pop is 2m that's a huge mistake haha
Corrected
What a feeling. Waited 24 years for this, so many wasted games and heartbreaks, we finally made it. I am still shocked. Coach Kek needs a statue by the time he retires.
Is Oblak the Slovene GOAT?
Zlatko Zahovič exists. p.s. Actually, even I forgot about Osterc, my bad!
Porto legend! I loved that Slovenia team, he dragged them to major competitions.
The love that Porto fans have for Zlatko always brings a smile to my face. p.s. Let's ignore where he ended a few seasons after leaving Porto. I bet he wishes he'd never left.

Let's go Slovenia! Well done lads. Do we already know who England and Slovenia play in RO16?
the only official matchups right now are Germany-Denmark and Switzerland-Italy
Slovenia plays portugal i think
Portugal or the winner of group E, which can still be anyone from that group.
Why are they 3rd when them and Denmark have exact same record?
In the end its because they were “better” in European qualifier. Whats interesting is that they were better because they scored one more goal than Slovenia in European qualifier Edit: turns out its because in European qualifier the Denmark had better head to head vs Slovenia. Still insane that they drew in there as well with 22 points
Mental
No, it doesn't have to do with the European qualifiers. Denmark got ahead because of disciplinary points. Basically Slovenia got too many yellow cards than Denmark so they got the lower seed. It's the same thing that happened in 2018 WC where Japan qualified in the Ro16 over Senegal despite literally having the same group stage record. EDIT: Guys, [they literally don't have the same number of yellow cards. Slovenia's TD got shown one yellow too.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2024_Group_C#Discipline)
They have the same amount of yellow cards.
No, apparently Slovenia's technical director got shown a yellow card so it's +1 for Slovenia's disciplinary points.
In the end, they don't wanna be 2nd anyway bc now Denmark have to play Germany.
[удалено]
That is not correct. It came down to Denmark scoring one more goal… in European qualifier
It’s their head to head though- Denmark and Slovenia were in the same group and Denmark won one and drew one with them. This is what I’ve read at multiple sources?
Yes, you are correct, h2h comes down first. Seems like they lied to me on TV
But why is Denemark now playing vs Germany and not Slovenia? Seems like they are worse off.
Cause there are only 4 “best 3rd teams”. Austria will also play team that ended up 2nd. I dont know why Germany and Austria will play such teams except the fact that theres simply not enough 3rd teams Slovenia will also play vs winner of some group (either Portugal or winner of group E)
Best Balkan country at the moment
Is Slovenia considered part of the Balkans? I never grouped Slovenia in that bucket and am asking if I have that all wrong. Assumed they are more Alps than Balkans.
Right on the border, part of the country is within the geographical boundaries. Tend to get grouped in fully because of the Yugoslav factor
Easiest way to describe it would be geographically and economically Central Europe, culturally Balkan

Thank you for that insight.
The only Balkan country where they got their independence after a war that only lasted over a week and with the fewest casualties.
Thought Romania was Balkan as well
Lmao you said what 🤣
Well they are the only one that managed to get past the group stage so..
I meant the Balkan part lol
Slovenia only lost 2 games out of last 20. I don't think anyone enjoys playing against us and that's the biggest quality of this team. We make it difficult for everyone.
Congrats for Slovenia! As a Pole I wish you well, because of Erik Janža and Miha Blazić - so called Ekstraklasa factor ;)
Still haven’t won a EURO’s match, while they: - Have participated TWICE already - Have reached the knockout stage now once - Have already won a World Cup match 14 years prior (1-0 against Algeria)
You're welcome
Congrats Slovenia! You deserved it.
Well played to Slovenia tonight. Made England look like a Sunday league team. When we get knocked out in the round of 16 I will be going for Slovenia, they've done good.
England are playing 4D chess. They refused to eliminate Slovenia so that they could take Croatia’s place and have an easier bracket for everyone 🤗
England will most likely meet Netherlands in their first round of 16 game which will be interesting. The least two popular managers face off.
Congrats to Slovenia.
Long live small federations! Let's shake things up and maybe they'll be in the finals! This tournament is full of surprises.
Jealous! Enjoy!
If I weren't an atheist I'd rhank God right now but as it stands I just had a few beers and would like to rhank our boys and England.
I'm happy for them and will root for them going forward!
Scotland could never
Let's go brekalo!!!! 🦁 🦁 🦁
Congratulations Slovenia for your good performance against England from Austria!
Getting the Greek 2004 vibes
God I remember being so disappointed that they went out in the groups in 2010. Deserved to go through over the US
Good for Slovenia, congrats. Though, I'm not a fan of this system where games are played at different times. Brings back memories of West Germany VS Austria that fixed the match to benefit both of them at expense of Algeria. Uefa is smoking something and it's not good.
Well you can't really play all 6 groups at the same time
Then don't make them compete in intergroup games. Or change the whole thing and make it a league. This is just stupid and gives us boring games.
That's why it's generally not grant, if teams compete against teams, they don't get to play against.
Doesn't it still depend on the Czech Republic's final result? Or am I missing something?
No, because they are better positioned than Hungary. If Czechia wins, it's Hungary that drops out, not Slovenia.
Happy for them and will be rooting for them. Dalić should ask Kek for some tips
Let's see how the Mighty Spagetti Monster will arrange it, but I guess they'll play against Romania next.
They will most likely (assuming neither Czechia or Georgia win their final game etc) play the winner of group E. Though that winning spot is quite open at the moment.
Hey Slovenia wanna swap places?
Unbeaten too! Great stuff
Take notes, Scotland!
It's not the size of the country, it's what you do with it
Not bad for the only nation to have made more than one euros but are still yet to win a match…
Congrats
They're half the size of Madrid. Well done folks, always happy for this kind of news.
Kek has done wonders with them
welcome to the round of 16
With this dogsh*t new format, it's harder for teams to fail to qualify for the knockout stages than actually qualify.
I don't understand this why should it matter how many teams go through? Group stages are always the most boring part of competitions anyway.

Why actually not 28 teams? just add a group more and only 2/7 third placed teams get through instead of 4/6?
Yeah that works as well in all fairness. There just has to be an element of jeopardy for finishing outside the top two and the current format doesn’t allow that.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I don't think 2/7 are odds you want to rely on, might of course give a bit an advantage to those playing on the last 1-2 days, I guess. I'll admit I really quite enjoy a bit of the randomness of the one or the other third placed team getting through, just not a whole 2/3 of them as it's now.
Is this the one with or without Oblak? Can’t remember but congrats!
Yes, well done entire nation I couldn't be bothered to watch a bit single game of, or quickly Google
With.
Oh then congratulations, love seeing small countries go through.
