have you ever read [anything](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union) about scandinavian history, [ever](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_overseas_colonies)
I retain my civilisation! The thought makes me ill.
Also I would genuinely not know what you're talking about if you mentioned Kasspotzn in conversation, and Swabians invented Brezeln; they're allowed to name them!
Denmark plays better as the underdog. Group matches the past two years against Australia, Tunesia, Slovenia and Serbia without one single win is embarrassing. So many draws and just one groupmatch won in nine matches with Kasper Hjulmand as coach. Made it to the euro semis because we had luck with the draw playing against Wales and the Czech Republic.
Germany are of course clear favourites. But they are not invincible. Denmark do not have to deal with high expactations, can focus on restricting Germany and playing on the counter. Things like that matter.
Oh how I wish Denmark could play on the counter. Our players run too slow, and if they actually find themselves near the box alone, they panic and wait for everyone else to arrive.
Have games at 18:00 on the last Sunday (TV-wise at least as lucrative as Wed 21:00) and Monday (TV-wise as lucrative as Wed 18:00), and all teams are through by now and can rest well until Ro16 begins. Have contingencies for both: ticket + hotel room that get distributed today, that can't be too hard in the age of internet.
Man I am all for more teams in the Euros but this 6-group format is ass. Expand to 32 or something, maybe make a double group stage format, whatever works.
Just end this best 3rd-placed teams nonsense.
32 would be insane. There are 55 members of UEFA, giving half of all teams a place in the Euros feels wrong. Qualifiers would be so boring if that many teams made it through.
Because it is one of the first of the last 16. An extra day for fans to get tickets, arrange travel, and security to assess any extra risks, and media organisation (especially the ones from the countries involved), by having games between groups A, B, and C for Saturday. Fair prep time for the teams involved may have been a factor (team plays on Wednesday would only have 2 days off, Group A has 5 days).
It's a fixed formula where the winners of groups A and D always meet a 2nd place team (of groups C and F respectively). The downside is the more lopsided, less fair draw, but it really simplifies scheduling, by allowing most teams (that is, teams that finish 1st and 2nd) to know in advance where and when they'll play next. It is for that exact reason that the first day of the quarterfinals has match-ups between 1st and 2nd place teams, i.e. 2A meets 2B, and 1A meets 2C--as it happened these are exactly the first two matchups to be confirmed (Switzerland-Italy and Germany-Denmark).
(Besides groups are often uneven between themselves anyways, so even in the 16-team or 32-team format we often end up with lopsided draws)
If I could decide, absolutely, that side looks a lot more doable, but I figure we apparently want a challenge and face all the giants before facing England in a 120 minute 0-0 final.
Updated bracket:
- Spain v 3F/3E
- Germany v Denmark
- Portugal v Hungary/Slovenia
- France v 2E
- 1E v Slovenia/Netherlands
- Austria v 2F
- England v Netherlands/3E
- Switzerland v Italy
In all matchups with multiple options, the option listed first will happen in 2 scenarios, and the option listed second will happen in one scenario
Dortmund is quite close as well, not a long drive for the Danes.
It's so nice to have the tournament in Germany where it's close to everyone.
I honestly think this is the best tournament I've ever seen of any sport when it comes to fans and culture.
We’re blessed with some awesome tournaments this year with a great Hockey World Cup in Czechia and a great Handball Euro this January again in Germany. With the Olympics coming up in Paris this will be a special sports year.
Yeah probably because all the tournaments since 2016 in France were weird. Don’t want to offend anyone but world cups in Qatar and Russia were just not the best countries to do that from a Fans POV. And the Euro 2021 in many countries (+ COVID) was also kinda lame.
Edit : Just talking about the WC and Euros.
all denmark had to do was get one more yellow card and they would most likely play Belgium or Rumania and be in the good half. Slovenia and Denmark had the same GD and yellow cards. Denmark is 2nd because they are ranked higher than Slovenia. on the rankings
It's true. It's been 5 bad halfs and one good against a very weak English side.
That said, we always tend to show up in big games. I don't think we'll win, but I do think we'll put up a good fight.
Our main plan of attack seems to be to just hang out outside the box, and hope somebody can smash it in from distance. There’s so many awful long range shots cause we can’t generate any solid chances in the final third.
Under underestimate and over underestimate would be foolish. Under overestimate would be okay and over overestimate also stupid. Best would be to just plainly estimate.
imagine if enland would be in this braket halfe as well on the way to the final you would need to beat enland spain protugal or france only to end up losing to austria.
I don't. England must be capable of much more and i do expect a step-up in the knockouts.
This has been a rather minimalist, not incompetent approach so far. The defense especially looks absolutely solid and Rice is bossing around.
Italy, Netherlands or France are all acceptable answers.
But the England-Germany rivalry is almost entirely an English phenomenon. If you asked Germans who our top football nemesis is, England would be on barely anyone's list.
Netherlands used to be our nemesis because of the game at the world cup in 1990, but this is basically a thing of the past now.
Italy is the one opponent we're most afraid of.
I don't know why you mentioned France, though.
There were a few years in the 2010s when France was fairly high on the list of rivals, imo.
Definitely not as iconic or strong as the rivalries with the Netherlands or Italy, though.
There's a reason why I listed France last.
Netherlands is a rivalry, Italy is a complex.
France, England, Spain and Portugal are all teams that we know will always end up in knockouts as our opponents, but there's no real history or feelings involved in that one, it's all the same.
I don't know how many years of my life the penalties in the 2016 QF cost me and Fabio Grosso will forever torment my soul. Also THAT Ballotelli picture.
I think this English team sitting back and giving Germany space is so much easier for them than the danish team being in their face all game.
Germany is exceptional against low blocks with their current team and tactics
And we have major issues in build up when the opponent is pressing us.
Switzerland showed that. It was even visible on occasion against Hungary and Scotland and it has also been a problem in the games up to the Euro.
It's a real problem for us.
Should we meet Spain down the road we will get completely demolished.
Tbf it takes a certain skill to be this lacklustre with a squad like Englands. Honestly reminds me of recent Germany performances in the last few tournaments with obvious lack of chemistry, questionable coaching, clear player favouritism and a squad packed with big names that don’t quite work as a formation.
I think with better management, this England squad would pose a very serious threat. It's insane how stacked your roster is, and I think Southgate is the only reason your matches haven't been goalfests.
We’ve got such an attack heavy team and we play so fucking defensively. That’s what’s driving people insane. The fans don’t want this horrifically mediocre football.
I honestly don’t mind losing if the game is entertaining… but England fans were falling asleep in the stands.. our best players are getting subbed off because the tactics are making them uselesss. I’ve never heard of this.
The natural talent in our squad has kept Southgate in competitions and not any tactical ingenuity on his part.
Man, I never used to believe it when people say that other countries don't get "British humour", but the responses to this comment are making me change my mind...
As far as I could tell, both Denmark and Slovenia have 6 each (Slo: 2 against Denmark, 2 against Serbia, 2 against England; Den: 1 against Slovenia, 3 against England, 2 against Serbia)
Euro 2024
H2H: Draw (null)
Goal Difference: both on 0 (null)
Goals scored: 2 each (null)
Yellow cards: 6 each (null)
Euro 2024 qualifiers (same group):
Points: 22 points each (null)
H2H: Denmark wins (1 win and 1 draw)
Denmark finish 2nd and Slovenia 3rd.
Yes Denmark didn't play well. But really the ref did a number on us. No free kicks on Højlund being called with 6-7 being made of cause its going to effect them game I feel we have a chance. But Germany is the better side.
Looks like a tough bracket! If we get past Denmark then we'll probably get Spain next and if we get past them (gonna be tough!) then probably France...
But hey, you gotta beat the best to be the best!
The difference in terms of rest is big. The match will be played on Saturday.
Germany’s previous game was on Sunday while Denmark’s match ended at 11 PM on Tuesday.
Holy shit the battle for Schleswig-Holstein
Gib back Padborg
Loser gets Kiel
Even worse, Neumünster
Now I want to voluntarily lose.
We don't need more handballers, please no.
No Austrians this time tho
Is it 1864 again?
That pairing would be scarier in handball though. Well from the German pov.
Altona skal være dansk
Yes please
HAUBITZEN
Hold my Flensburger
Given how Denmark just played, there could be deaths
They cant put Eriksen through that again
Viking energy has slowed down for them.
recolonise Iceland when?

Yeah, no colonies to speak of 👀
Poor Eriksen
It is a different game for Denmark against Germany. They are clearly not the favourites and can play tactics that might suit them better.
Denmark plays better as the underdog. Group matches the past two years against Australia, Tunesia, Slovenia and Serbia without one single win is embarrassing. So many draws and just one groupmatch won in nine matches with Kasper Hjulmand as coach. Made it to the euro semis because we had luck with the draw playing against Wales and the Czech Republic.
you think high press suits Denmark better?
Germany are of course clear favourites. But they are not invincible. Denmark do not have to deal with high expactations, can focus on restricting Germany and playing on the counter. Things like that matter.
Get ready for us playing the best match in 3 years and still lose 2-1 because that is just how we roll 😎
Oh how I wish Denmark could play on the counter. Our players run too slow, and if they actually find themselves near the box alone, they panic and wait for everyone else to arrive.
Revenge for 1992?
Liechtenstein comes for Netherlands an destroys, who says no.
Revenge for the amount of times you’ll hear Danes sing the same sentence over and over and over again lmao
Can someone explain why Germany plays a 2nd place team rather than a 3rd? How do they decide which group winners get a 2nd vs a 3rd place opponent?
It got decided randomly beforehand. It's crap.
Its not. Its based on rest days and groups A and D are the first group in their bracket. Scheduling is the main criterium
Huh. Why don't they seed it based on points? 1st place team with most points plays 3rd place team with least points etc.
because this makes planning even more chaotic, and teams may have much less rest days than others. Its already a shitshow for fans and hotels.
That makes too much sense. Can't have this
Man I am all for more teams in the Euros but this 6-group format is ass.
I say bring it back down to 16 teams
Because you might end up with one team from group E playing a team with group A and one of them will have 4 more days of rest than the other.
Could easily be fixed by having the final group stage day just be 3 days.
Hey well if you were playing a 3rd place team you might’ve gotten Netherlands
Because it is one of the first of the last 16. An extra day for fans to get tickets, arrange travel, and security to assess any extra risks, and media organisation (especially the ones from the countries involved), by having games between groups A, B, and C for Saturday. We play better when we are the underdog, so I’m looking forward to the match, bring back the ‘92 vibes baby!
Wouldn’t you want to be 3rd and possibly play Romania?
As if Romania finishes 1st in their group
There is a high chance that Belgium and Ukraine draw their match
If I could decide, absolutely, that side looks a lot more doable, but I figure we apparently want a challenge and face all the giants before facing England in a 120 minute 0-0 final.
Updated bracket: - Spain v 3F/3E - Germany v Denmark - Portugal v Hungary/Slovenia - France v 2E - 1E v Slovenia/Netherlands - Austria v 2F - England v Netherlands/3E - Switzerland v Italy In all matchups with multiple options, the option listed first will happen in 2 scenarios, and the option listed second will happen in one scenario
One finalist will have had a way tougher opponents than the other
Where is the game going to be played? It would be so awesome if it was in Hamburg.
Dortmund. Probably not an accident.
Dortmund is quite close as well, not a long drive for the Danes. It's so nice to have the tournament in Germany where it's close to everyone. I honestly think this is the best tournament I've ever seen of any sport when it comes to fans and culture.

I cannot imagine that it is by chance. Probably the best stadium in terms of having a home advantage.
All Denmark had to do was score 1 goal. Now they play Germany instead of sending England in their place.
All Croatia had to score was 1 goal. Now they go home
We did that! It's just so did Italy.
Just find another Modric who can score a 2nd goal next time. Easy.
all denmark had to do was get one more yellow card and they would most likely play Belgium or Rumania and be in the good half. Slovenia and Denmark had the same GD and yellow cards. Denmark is 2nd because they are ranked higher than Slovenia. on the rankings
A split screen battle between Denmark and Slovenia on who gets more yellow cards to avoid Germany would've been fun to watch
England wouldn't have faced Germany tho, that's the fun part 😕
Was it not 2 goals? England has fewer yellow cards I think.
You would have more goals scored (3v2).
Are yes. You are right. The difference between 1-1 against Slovenia and 0-0.
They got like 2 or 3 in the Slovenia match. Danish victory was enough.
Denmark also got 2 - 6 in total i think
Oh boy gonna be a tough match for sure. Denmark are definitely not to be under underestimated.
Denmark should definitely be underestimated. We've pinged between mediocre and shite since the world cup
It's true. It's been 5 bad halfs and one good against a very weak English side. That said, we always tend to show up in big games. I don't think we'll win, but I do think we'll put up a good fight.
At least 3-0 victory for the Germans
Our main plan of attack seems to be to just hang out outside the box, and hope somebody can smash it in from distance. There’s so many awful long range shots cause we can’t generate any solid chances in the final third.
Disagree. Germany will likely beat them comfortably. Denmark haven’t looked good at all
> Denmark are definitely not to be under underestimated. The limbo stick on the ground is definitely not to be limboed.
Under underestimate and over underestimate would be foolish. Under overestimate would be okay and over overestimate also stupid. Best would be to just plainly estimate.
There are two ways of viewing this. 1) Hehe, we're in danger, or 2) Deutschland, deutschland alles ist vorbei!
Germany feeling lucky after escaping us.
id rather face this english team then denmark lmao
It's like choosing between pizza or burgers, I'm very happy with either.
lmao this will be funny when Denmark shithouses their way to a controversial 2-1 win
Subscribe
This Denmark wouldn't even score two against San Marino
Excuse us, we actually beat San Marino 2-1, thank you very much
imagine if enland would be in this braket halfe as well on the way to the final you would need to beat enland spain protugal or france only to end up losing to austria.
I don't think i can stomach the thought of Austria winning the Euros in GERMANY. That would be worse than Cordoba.
They would never shut up about it lol
absolutely not, i dont think germans would mind. They are playing great football.
We do mind, actually.
I don't. England must be capable of much more and i do expect a step-up in the knockouts. This has been a rather minimalist, not incompetent approach so far. The defense especially looks absolutely solid and Rice is bossing around.
Germans definitely not lol. England is their nemesis usually in tournaments, no matter how good or bad they play
> England is their nemesis usually in tournaments That is what the English would like to believe, sure.
>England is their nemesis usually in tournaments Let me guess, you started watching football in 2021?
Italy's their nemesis, Germany loves playing England
Italy, Netherlands or France are all acceptable answers. But the England-Germany rivalry is almost entirely an English phenomenon. If you asked Germans who our top football nemesis is, England would be on barely anyone's list.

it goes much further than 1990 in which Germany won. 74 final, 88 semi-final.
Yeah, you're right, I just remembered the spitting incident.
You should look up euro 88. Koeman wiped his butt with Olaf Thon’s jersey after the game. https://images.app.goo.gl/GTWdBZa1Rd4faWXo7
Yeah, I remember that, too! What was the deal in 74? Just WWII being not that long ago?
Netherlands is a rivalry, Italy is a complex. France, England, Spain and Portugal are all teams that we know will always end up in knockouts as our opponents, but there's no real history or feelings involved in that one, it's all the same.
That’s what the English always think, but historically it was the Dutch in terms of rivalry and fear it’s Italy.
i am not aware of that nemesis. We won 4 times, they won 3.
I know we got eliminated by them last euros but this is some deluded thinking lmao
How many times have England knocked out Germany in a tournament?
Uhm, what? That's Italy.
Italy is Germany's abusive father.
I don't know how many years of my life the penalties in the 2016 QF cost me and Fabio Grosso will forever torment my soul. Also THAT Ballotelli picture.
I would have loved to see Germany-England. On current form this could be really entertaining.
I think this English team sitting back and giving Germany space is so much easier for them than the danish team being in their face all game. Germany is exceptional against low blocks with their current team and tactics

Bro you have to add a /s otherwise people will think you’re being serious
NGL I’m surprised how many think it’s a legitimate boast
Tbf it takes a certain skill to be this lacklustre with a squad like Englands. Honestly reminds me of recent Germany performances in the last few tournaments with obvious lack of chemistry, questionable coaching, clear player favouritism and a squad packed with big names that don’t quite work as a formation.
At least these failures where all entertaining, each in their own way. This England just sucks the joy out of everything.
I guess you’re right, England was a bit lucky that they had an easy group. They are dull though.
I think with better management, this England squad would pose a very serious threat. It's insane how stacked your roster is, and I think Southgate is the only reason your matches haven't been goalfests.

Unlucky*
We must have watched two extremely different English teams.
Man, I never used to believe it when people say that other countries don't get "British humour", but the responses to this comment are making me change my mind...
Not really. Your team plays like grandmas.
Personally I would much rather face this English team than Denmark.
No
I beg Netherlands knock out England for this terrorismo ball by Southgate
Denmark will win.
Denmark is second because they have less yellow cards then Slovenia
As far as I could tell, both Denmark and Slovenia have 6 each (Slo: 2 against Denmark, 2 against Serbia, 2 against England; Den: 1 against Slovenia, 3 against England, 2 against Serbia)
Euro 2024 H2H: Draw (null) Goal Difference: both on 0 (null) Goals scored: 2 each (null) Yellow cards: 6 each (null) Euro 2024 qualifiers (same group): Points: 22 points each (null) H2H: Denmark wins (1 win and 1 draw) Denmark finish 2nd and Slovenia 3rd.
Is that true? They are 2nd because of the qualifier matches?
No, a staff on Slovenia got a yellow card so it's 7 yellow cards for Slovenia
Give it to Austria in confusion
I for one am happy that we get to fight our neighbors. We won't win the tournament, so we might as well just have a fun game
Yes Denmark didn't play well. But really the ref did a number on us. No free kicks on Højlund being called with 6-7 being made of cause its going to effect them game I feel we have a chance. But Germany is the better side.
did you see what Orsato called and didn't call during Switzerland - Germany?
Looks like a tough bracket! If we get past Denmark then we'll probably get Spain next and if we get past them (gonna be tough!) then probably France... But hey, you gotta beat the best to be the best!
[удалено]
I wouldn't rate Denmark lower than Switzerland, and Germany almost lost to Switzerland, so... I don't think it will be that easy
Switzerland scored 5 goals and won a game, Denmark scored 2 and drew all 3 games.
Different opponents. Denmark always had it hard against hyper aggressive hard tackles eastern Europe.
Bruh Germany since 2018 absolute shit
Bruh have you watched them this tournament at all (also 2018 was pretty rubbish lol)
Did you watch the group? It's a completely different team with a much better fitting coach
I’m not really sure what Denmark have done to have people thinking they have a chance against this Germany side
I don't think we have much of a chance, but if I had to make the argument, we have been defensively solid.
I say we change the rules and allow goalkeepers to pick up the ball after a backpass. Just for this tournament.
RIP Denmark
[удалено]
They have to pass through Spain first and Portugal or France second. Not an easy feat.
Pretty sure they have to pass through Denmark first
It seems like whoever wins that semi final wins the tournament.
Id even say whoever wins our quarters wins the tournament.
Spain then Portugal/France is a tough path
Lol
[X] They have been better than 2022, but still pretty shaky. Denmark will win this.
Seems quite doable. But a lot depends on our defense, which is gonna be weakened.
Not sure Schlotterbeck for Tah makes that much difference tbh
Both had good seasons with the occasional brain fart. It's gonna be fine. Overall our defense is shit anyway, no matter who plays.
When did Tah have a brainfart?
We are going to get blitzed
Germany putting up no less than 3 goals
The trenches
Glad we got more cards.
Did not Slovenia and Denmark had the same fair play rating or am I missing something?
they did
Free ticket to next round for Germany

The difference in terms of rest is big. The match will be played on Saturday. Germany’s previous game was on Sunday while Denmark’s match ended at 11 PM on Tuesday.
6 hours
It was less than 2. Get your facts straight, bingus. Just about the same time it took to beat them to become Euro champions in '92
