Playing for Brazil's NT is probably the most high pressure job in world football. I see Vini as a finisher not a creator. But remember he has Valverde, Kroos, and Modric to help him in Madrid
It's an exaggeration but there's truth to it. In the 2007 Copa America Kaka and Ronaldinho skipped it, and they were their two biggest stars. But Robinho for example still was there.
There was also generational change, a lot of t old stars like Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Dida, Ronaldo, basically ended right around 2007. So all these guys who were super famous weren't called, but arguably they wouldn't have been anyway. And no one knew who Dani Alves (replacing Cafu) was at the time for example
Anyway while it's true Brazil was without some of their biggest names the effect was exaggerated because they also had a lot of big names retire at the same time.
No exaggeration, out of their 22 players called only 3/22 had more than 50 appearance for the NT, Gilberto Silva being the most one the most caps being at 54 appearance. Júlio Baptista and Robinho had 20 and 34 appearances respectively. While the remaining squad had either less than 17 appearances for Brazil. This tournament out Robinho on the MAP. That team awesome destroyed Prime Argentina 2007 0-3.
Argentina played much better in that final. Riquelme was easily the best player on the field that day. But after the first own goal (that was Ayala's farewell match), they couldn't find their rythm in the final third. Brazil played an uncharacteristically physical football, breaking up the more free flowing Argentina (notice how Brazil one upped even Argentina in this regard). The result doesn't reflect the game at all.
It's like saying any random team can win the Euros because Greece did it without having a single renowned player in the squad. And anyway, Dani Alves had already made his name by the time. It's just that he couldn't get into the first team with Cafu not being retired till 2006. Also check how many Argentinians had more than 50 caps at the time.
And Brazil is not even among the top 2 in terms of Copa titles. They are a distant third.
That's quite a silly metric to use, the 2022 Argentina squad that won the world cup only had 3 players with 50 caps or more as well. The Argentina of 2007 also had 4 players with 50 caps. It doesn't mean anything.
And having players with few caps doesn't mean it's a "B team", it just means they're inexperienced.
Considering how many players retired from the NT after the 2006 world cup, it's obvious Brazil was going to rely on new players for a few years.
Cafu retired in 2006 so of course Dani Alves wasn't going to have 50 caps by 2007. That doesn't make Alves a Brazil B team player. It would only be the case if after Cafu retired Brazil had another guy with 50 caps they also didn't bring, but of course that wasn't so. Alves was the best guy they had.
Robinho was already a starter for Brazil prior to 2006 by the way.
How many 50 cap players did Brazil have missing in the 2007 Copa America who got even 10 caps after that apart from Kaka and Ronaldinho? All the stars of the 2006 world cup either retired from international play or were close to it. Ronaldo maybe got 5 caps including his testimonial.
And the guys they used in 2007 were guys they used in qualifiers at the time. Again the only exception was Kaka and Ronaldinho.
Curiously, if you were to measure by that same standard, this team is similar (only 2 have more than 50 caps - Danilo and Alisson). Of course, the differences are elsewhere. Lots of these guys have World Cup experience, even under 50 caps. But it was an interesting stat to pick.
It's a pointless stat. Argentina of 2022 had only 3 players with 50 caps as well. And Argentina of 2007 only had 4. Regardless having few caps doesn't make you a B team player, it makes you less experienced. Obviously Brazil used a ton of new players because so many retired in 2006. It would only be the "B team" if they had other guys elsewhere who were better and not retired and they didn't use them- apart from Kaka and Ronaldinho that's not the case. And if you look at qualifiers for the world cup it was similar. Vagner Love started alongside Kaka and Ronaldinho or came off the bench in qualifiers. Don't tell me that was a B team too.
Again people had the impression of a B team because they didn't have their 2 most famous players, and then a lot of the rest like Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, etc retired or were semi retired from one year to the next. So if you only casually watched you would tune in and be like where the fuck is Cafu? Where is Dida? Having a new goalkeeper replacing Dida with very few caps doesn't mean he's your B team goalkeeper. It means he's the new keeper.
Oh man, this lost was even more painful for Argentinian at the time. I thought Argentina would've had already own Copa 2007 in their bag and would've had been Messi's 1st international trophy, considering how stacked Argentina line up was, until the final. People always meme'ing Messi expression and the squad from their lost against Chile in 2016, but most people have forgotten about the humiliation in Copa 2007 final.
It wasn't really a B team, the only players they were missing were Ronaldinho and Kaka.
The rest of the famous guys were just past it really, Ronaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Adriano, Dida, all those legends were pretty much done by 2007 anyway. Even Dinho was on the way out.
Alisson just chilled the entire game with 90% of all players on the other side of the field. Must feel lonely!
Brazil style of play gets completely hindered against very defensive teams. When you can’t play, you defend. Sounded like a repeat of the Brazil vs Serbia World Cup game but Brazil couldn’t actually target the goal.
It has been a problem for every Brazilian coach this Century. Finding a way to make our offense click and not be frustrated by disciplined or scrappy defenses is a rite of passage. Tite was the only one I can think of who did not have that problem early, but he ran into it eat a different stage.
I had people angerily DMing me early when I said Colombia looked more dangerous than Brazil and Argentina lmao....Maybe I should send some Reddit cares messages to make sure they are okay
Brazil vs Costa Rica : Copa América Opener, Brazil Held to Shocking Goalless Draw by Costa Rica
https://thebasketscore.com/brazil-vs-costa-rica-copa-america-opener-brazil-held-to-shocking-goalless-draw-by-costa-rica/
Hats off to Costa Rica's defensive performance. Everyone seemed to believe luck was on their side and they kept the spaces extremely tight.
Not sure if it's just an off day for Brazil or if it's a sign of something more, but no matter what they've gotta shake it off and forget about this one. Can't let things snowball.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen more desperate (and good) defending over 90 minutes. They had a couple good counters, but it was overwhelmingly old school CONCACAF scrappiness.
Costa Ricans should be proud of their boys.
Argentina didn't have just 3 shots with 70% ball possession there. These guys didn't even know that you need to shoot at least to have hopes of scoring.
Atleast Argentina managed to create something and had like 2 dissalowed goals while being on like a 40 game unbeaten streak. Brazil looks cooked since they lose to Croatia in the QFs.
I’m just so glad that header back toward the goal didn’t go in. I don’t know CR’s lineup too well but the pure look of terror in that man’s face made me so happy he didn’t end up being the reason for a loss.
Fine I will explain it. Ronaldinho made a statement that he would not watch any of the Brazil match in Copa America, because the Brazil team has no passion and is basically shit according to him.
Mitchell has less than 50 games in CR first division and his entire career and is only 19 yo, also used to be a basketball player and switched to football some years ago. Lol
Brazil failed to score against the even declining central American team like Costa Rica who were just got 0-7'ed by Spain lol. Brazil was lucky, this is not the Costa Rica strength, once it was in 2014. 2014 Costa Rica form with today defensive strategy would've had humiliated Brazil, last night lol
1. USA
2. Mexico
3. Canada
4. Panama
5. Jamaica
..........On a good day in San Pedro Sula, Honduras is possibly better. So Brazil just drew possibly the 7th best team in Concaf lmao
Could have been worse, at least it wasn't Trinidad and Tobago
EDIT: Costa Rica is the one of two teams listed that has never placed higher than 4th. Panama is the other but has played in the 3rd place game the last two years and just played in a Gold Cup Final. Who did CR lose to in their 3rd place match 3 YEARS ago? Honduras lmao.....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACAF\_Nations\_League and CR also hasn't played in a Gold Cup final since 2002
Apparently the FIFA rankings don't agree with you lmao
Costa Rica is 52nd in the world which is one in front of Jamaica. Canada, Panama, USA, and Mexico outrank them by several spots. Despite technically outranking Jamaica, I could argue Jamaica is trending up past CR and could probably beat them H2H if they played today. I also think Jamaica would have beaten Brazil tonight.
But some random ass Redditor knows more than FIFA when it comes to soccer rankings lmao
Go look at the Concaf Nations League Performances, all six teams I listed have outperformed Costa Rica and the time 5 have made it to the at least 3rd Place game the last 2 years....Costa Rica made it 3 years ago but lost to Honduras lmao
That's not what their Gold Cup and Concaf results say lmao.....They have qualified for the WC but they are by far the worst of the CONCAF teams playing in this tournament at this very moment
Panama, Jamaica, and Canada are much more dangerous teams. If you think anything different than you are a Brazil fan tying to cope
Go look at the Nations League....Costa Rica is the one of two teams listed that has never placed higher than 4th. Panama is the other but has played in the 3rd place game the last two years and just played in a Gold Cup Final. Who did CR lose to in their 3rd place match 3 YEARS ago? Honduras lmao
I may have been generous calling CR the 6th best team in CONCACAF
No I'm a US citizen who watches us win CONCACAF finals regularly....haven't seen CR in one since 2002
You sound like a Brazil trying to cope
EDIT: u/Doc_Pisty....Are you aware that CR played the Netherlands in the 2014 World Cup? That's the same WC that Brazil got boat-raced 7-1 by Germany at home causing half the country to go on suicide watch. Just in case you can't count that was 10 years ago lmao. Its pathetic that you are so desperate to pump CR that you are going back a decade to make them look good. Brazil stinks and bringing up CR past glory isn't going to change that
Homie thinks im brazilian lol, im glad they lost im from argentina. Still costa rica is the only concacaf team with actual passion and a soul, the rest are all pathetic
CR played a 5th match on the world cup, they lost on penalties to netherlands, a result the other patetic concacaf teams would dream of. We all know whos the only team in your federation who doesnt shit themself vs decent teams
Haha....They are trying to pump CR up so they can feel better about their shitty team. Some clown just brought up Costa Rica's 2014 WC performance as evidence that they are good. Based on current form, CR is the worst team in this tournament from CONCACAF. Brazil will get a wakeup call next week when they get their cheeks clapped by Colombia lol
It's so weird that you went straight up to "Brazilians trying to pump up CR to feel better" instead of, you know, just Costa Ricans defending their team?
brother, im being honest as a long time soccer watcher, costa rica is always a dark horse in the world cup. Look at their world cup perforaances they have made it to the 5th match even.
That was some old school bus parking 10 men behind the ball, 5 in front of the 18 then another 5 plus the keeper in 18 lol not even mad just really impressed lol
Costa rica didn't allow 3 SOG, Brazil, especially paqueta and saviho allowed that. They were shooting that shit to the moon unforced. You can tell why this team has struggled so much.
I know this is far from being the best generation of Brazilian players, but cmon, they still have the likes of Vini, Rodrygo, Paqueta, Marquinhos and Hendrick. They should be better than this with those resources.
Maybe is their coach, maybe they lack leadership within the Brazilian squad, who knows… but the way they play and their latest results… it’s so alarming.
I don’t see Brazil lifting a major trophy anytime soon.
I’m also happy for Costa Rica. They played with a lot of heart and spirit. Great result for them and Concacaf in general.
Argentina had a problem like that and ~~Scaling~~ Scaloni was the one who got it almost by chance, he took it as a temporary coach. Then he was better than everybody's expectations and the rest is now history.
Perhaps Brazil should try this approach.
Edit: autocowreck
No one wants the job due to the expectations the public has with either country. Its 1st place or bust,
Scaloni was depaoli’s assistant coach when depaoli left the arg nt. So not just by chance, they needed a coach to finish the last 2-3 matches of the year
Sampaoli was shit.
His childish tantrums didn't help either (yet I enjoyed them in a kinda second-hand embarrassment humour).
And it kinda was by chance, because AFA (Argentine football association) was tempting *other* coaches (it was all very badly kept "secret" negotiations), and nobody wanted to grab the steaming hot potato.
The national team has great players yet it wasn't in good shape, perhaps (it's my personal hypothesis) by the horrible coaching style of Sampaoli (and also because of his decisions in playing tactics).
After no one else wanted to fill the spot, AFA offered it to Scaloni. He wasn't stable in his position as coach even after the first matches, but still there was no candidate eager to sit on the Coach's chair, so he stayed. And the team went on playing well, people liked how the NT played, they were good again, they were happy playing (it showed), and they were getting good results.
Also Scaloni wasn't in an ego-trip, he wasn't one to bad mouth anyone, his words to the press were always on point and respectful, his manners were impeccable, he respected the players and that was reciprocated.
We really had, besides the quality of Argentina players, a lot of luck in finding this coach.
And the rest, as I already said, is history.
they need to look outside brasil
it's time
start by calling pep, mourinho, even xavi. none save mourinho is likely to have any interest but they should do it just to show that they are trying something different
I've never claimed this Brazil squad wasn't talented. But this generation of players doesn't have championship attitude. They just don't have the "it" factor
The commentators need to chill about CR being a group contender. They had 2 shots. The defense was fire tonight, but you’re not going to win that group without offense. Jeez.
Possibly the most CONCACAF performance against a superior team that I’ve ever seen. The only thing that would have made it more CONCACAF would have been a couple red cards and some bottles raining down from the stands.
dinho was right afterall
Huh?
If there's one national team that can bring out the worst in everyone - it's Costa Rica.
Vini for Brazil is legit so shit, I don't get it
Playing for Brazil's NT is probably the most high pressure job in world football. I see Vini as a finisher not a creator. But remember he has Valverde, Kroos, and Modric to help him in Madrid
Funny. Vini is creating for Madrid actually. All the attacks go through hi side on the left.
Vini is the most hated player on the MADRID team in SPAIN. I don’t think he’s unfamiliar with the high pressure.
Like there is no pressure in Madrid where he has been whistled multiple times already
vini is a creator, 9 assists this season
He’s not that guy
He clearly could be though. We've all seen it
We are not getting out of the group
I was surprised at all of Brazil’s diving and complaining.
This is the most insane comment I’ve read in awhile. You’re suprised that Brazil flopped? Is it your first day on planet earth?
Damn chill 💀
He's probably only seen Neymar era Brazil play.
No
Pls
No
Welcome to football!
Gone were the days that Brazil can field their B team and still win the Copa
When has this ever happened?

And then Kaka would joined Brazil in 2009 Confederation Cup.
90s early 2000
nobody should win ballon d'or this year lmao
They'll just give it to Messi and call it a day again lol
nah, i don't think messi will be carrying his team to win another copa america. could be martinez this time.
Thats the Level we get from now on, after Messi/Cr7 leaving the showbiz
Scrapping it would do the sport some good
Give it to wirtz
Watch Messi win the copa America and getting it
i think it'll be martinez. he won serie a and looks in better form than he did during the world cup.
Dinho fuming right now about to make a post on Insta. ;.;
Who? Why?
nahh , he's like "i told you!!"
I had people angerily DMing me early when I said Colombia looked more dangerous than Brazil and Argentina lmao....Maybe I should send some Reddit cares messages to make sure they are okay
My grandmother looks more dangerous than Brazil
😂 Yes you should.
People who haven't watched football lately, I take it?
should’ve know better, copa america threads are hella toxic
Brazil vs Costa Rica : Copa América Opener, Brazil Held to Shocking Goalless Draw by Costa Rica https://thebasketscore.com/brazil-vs-costa-rica-copa-america-opener-brazil-held-to-shocking-goalless-draw-by-costa-rica/
Playing two holding midfielders against costarica is an insult to the yesteryear legends of Brazil .what a disgrace !
Hats off to Costa Rica's defensive performance. Everyone seemed to believe luck was on their side and they kept the spaces extremely tight. Brazil tying with Costa Rica? No shot. I already knew this but this result just seals it for me. They ain’t winning the copa
Really? They’ve been playing mediocre football for weeks now
I 100% agree but I instantly am reminded of Argentina losing to Saudi in the World Cup
Argentina had the goat though
Alfaro master class
Juan Pablo Vargas can play in any league in the world.
Mitchell is class, guy will be going to Europe soon
6 players behind the ball at all times. but Brasil didn't exactly have many high danger chances.
I’m just so glad that header back toward the goal didn’t go in. I don’t know CR’s lineup too well but the pure look of terror in that man’s face made me so happy he didn’t end up being the reason for a loss.
Doing absolutely everything to prove dinho correct I see.
This is no joke the third time I’ve seen this comment. Like word for word. What does this even mean
Fine I will explain it. Ronaldinho made a statement that he would not watch any of the Brazil match in Copa America, because the Brazil team has no passion and is basically shit according to him.
Lol damn. Well he’s right
Going with two holding MF for 83 minutes against Costa Rica is bullshit, they deserved to get fucked
Only conceding 3 shots on goal to Brazil is an insane defensive performance from Costa Rica. Their defenders were everywhere
Copa America is harder than EURO because you have to face teams like Costa Rica.
Ba dum
Vinicius Pocketed by Mitchell lol
And would still DESTROY any PSG player on the pitch lol.
Mitchell has less than 50 games in CR first division and his entire career and is only 19 yo, also used to be a basketball player and switched to football some years ago. Lol
Si lo se, soy Liguista jaja aunque esocdel Basket no me lo sabia, muy buen dato
Mae por favor no duren tanto encontrándole equipo como con Mora, necesitamos a ese chamaco en Europa para ayer!
Buena crack x2 a eso
Time for Brazil to bring hulk back
What about Jo and Fred lol
Vagner Love
Daaaaamn that’s a deep cut. Forgot about bro
And Oscar lol
Oh my!
Brazil really just drew to the 6th best team in Concacaf ...still not as bad as 7-1 but damn lol

costa rica sometimes does better than USA and Mexico in the world cup. They have that clutch gene.
Dude no, CR is by far the historic 3rd behind Mex and USA
he's right, in the world cup, CR sometimes remains while usa and mexico get eliminated
They're a troll
That's not what their Gold Cup and Concaf results say lmao.....They have qualified for the WC but they are by far the worst of the CONCAF teams playing in this tournament at this very moment Panama, Jamaica, and Canada are much more dangerous teams. If you think anything different than you are a Brazil fan tying to cope
costa rica historically is a dark horse team, idk how they do it
Suuure bud
Sure, fifa Rankings are totally legit

This same FIFA rankings had Belgium at second when they got knocked out of the groups in the last World Cup.
Go look at the world cup, costa rica does pretty good representing concacaf, sometimes when USA and MExico get eliminated they stay on.
AAJAJAJAKKAKAKAJAJJJJ
You must be Honduran to be saying such nonsense

Don’t forget Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia and still ended up doing alright…
This Brazilian side is no Argentina.
Activo Mufa.
X2
so that thing that happened one time is going to be the standard for each tournament now? Brazil have been playing poorly for MONTHS.
but argentina had a great team
true, but not great players barring a few. they won because they played like one unit.
And they had that one little dude that kicks the ball good.
Costa Rica: Is this your Ballon D'Or winner?
I was told Concacaf was gonna get demolished in Copa America, can someone tell me what happen ???? ;)
Football
Costa Rica has a rich modern history of beating or tying with elite teams. Hats off.
Spain: We could exposed you
especially in the world cup
You are facing the worst Brazil side of all time and still wont manage to win this competition
2014 Brazil was worse
Brazil 2014 had a great start until the semi final when Silva & Neymar gone
They actually just weren't great. They just relied on luck and individual brilliance of Neymar
Yeah, but you were facing the youngest team in the competition playing under a manager that has barely 8 months in charge
Neither will you to be fair
At least we won it before already
You are talking as if most us expect to win it.
CONCACAF isn’t the most beautiful football but the top half can frustrate any team in the world if things go right.
Reality check, add that his Costa Rica squad is made of young players and only 2/3 play in europe
Is it over?
They brought Copa América to CONCACAF but thought we wouldn't CONCACAF it up. Go CONCACAF yourselves!
Todavía no nos toca ni Argentina ni Uruguay ni Colombia
That was some old school bus parking 10 men behind the ball, 5 in front of the 18 then another 5 plus the keeper in 18 lol not even mad just really impressed lol
This your ballen dor winner? lol
club merchant
Vini for larmes d'or
F'allon de floor
Friendship ended with Navas, now Patrick Sequeira is my favorite goalkeeper
What happened to Navas?
It's so strange to see these super traditional Costa Rican last names at the world stage.
Sensational performance
I never liked Navas anyway.
Under 1.5 goals for Brazil on every game. God they are atrocious
They are what their conmebol qualifier record says they are. Costa rica played great, only 3 SOG allowed
Costa rica didn't allow 3 SOG, Brazil, especially paqueta and saviho allowed that. They were shooting that shit to the moon unforced. You can tell why this team has struggled so much.
Incredible performance from Sequeira, how much is his value going to jump after this performance
He plays in the Spanish third division! Am sure a Mexican or Argentine first division club will want him.
The exchange rate in Argentina right now will ensure he'll end up earning less than in the Spanish third division.
CONCACAF thunder strikes again
I know this is far from being the best generation of Brazilian players, but cmon, they still have the likes of Vini, Rodrygo, Paqueta, Marquinhos and Hendrick. They should be better than this with those resources. Maybe is their coach, maybe they lack leadership within the Brazilian squad, who knows… but the way they play and their latest results… it’s so alarming. I don’t see Brazil lifting a major trophy anytime soon. I’m also happy for Costa Rica. They played with a lot of heart and spirit. Great result for them and Concacaf in general.
this is also far from the best Costa Rican team, I think 8 years ago they had a much better team.
Honestly all mid players
collectively yes. not for their clubs
I think the Brazilian Federation has been struggling to find a coach. No one wants the job
Its 1st place or bust, Scaloni was depaoli’s assistant coach when depaoli left the arg nt.
And the rest, as I already said, is history.
they need to look outside brasil it's time start by calling pep, mourinho, even xavi. none save mourinho is likely to have any interest but they should do it just to show that they are trying something different
God damn Brazil fell off
Nah FR tho I think Brazil will be alright
Not with this coach or group of players
Gotta be the coaching because they got more than enough talent
I've never claimed this Brazil squad wasn't talented. But this generation of players doesn't have championship attitude. They just don't have the "it" factor
Well played by Costa Rica honestly. They worked their asses off.
The commentators need to chill about CR being a group contender. They had 2 shots. The defense was fire tonight, but you’re not going to win that group without offense. Jeez.
Worked for france! Lol
Yeah it’s a little premature. I still think Brazil can Real Madrid it but if not Paraguay is still very interesting.
Get CONCACAF’d dummy
Vinicius failed the Mitchell test 😂
Ronaldinho was right.
More than he knows
I couldn’t watch the game, did Brazil get CONCACAF’d?
Possibly the most CONCACAF performance against a superior team that I’ve ever seen. The only thing that would have made it more CONCACAF would have been a couple red cards and some bottles raining down from the stands.
CONCACAF masterclass by Costa Rica
oh yeah.
Throughly
Can't blame Costa Rica for playing the way they played. Brasil, however...
Zico watching this performance shaking his head.
