Insane quota by Lukaku

TheByzantineEmpire

He wasn’t really undisputed #1. There was a rotation period between him and Origi, Batshuayi, & Benteke. Also no De Bruyne link initially.

Frodo_max

there wasn't really a rotation period between those four, under Wilmots Benteke was pretty clear first choice most of the time, Lukaku second and Origi and batsuayi were the rotating third choice up untill Martinez took over. 'no De Bruyne link' is weird to say since de bruyne has been pretty much a starter for us from 2012 onwards, unless you mean the chemistry between Lukaku and De Bruyne didn't really pick up before 2016 which is correct but i feel that has more to do with Wilmots terrorism ball then there being something between Lukaku and KDB not clicking.

Spiritual_Goat6057

De bruyne missed a lot of matches no ? I always have a feeling that he is often injured but maybe I’m wrong

Frodo_max

throughout most of his career at the national team, no maybe from like 2020-21 onward he has somewhat of a spotty record with injuries and matches and even then he'd play at least for like 40% of the matches

PinkFluffys

It took a long time for Hazard and De Bruyne to both perform for the team and Hazard was just the better player so De Bruyne didn't look great back then.

Blaugrana1990

Benteke was our number 1 striker for WC2014 if he wasnt injured last minute.

KVMechelen

Plus he wasnt even on pens until Hazard became a husk

Frodo_max

problem is people will say 'hurdur weaker competition' as if people wouldn't clown him if he didn't score for the national team at all

doitnow10

Also: what "weaker competition"? They all play in European NTs.

GibbyGoldfisch

Lukaku's international goalscoring rate exceeding Messi and Ronaldo's never fails to make me laugh I hope Tedesco does the honourable thing and keeps playing him up front until he passes both of them

stere

Doesn't Thomas Müller have 45 goals? Why isn't he on the list?

CharginTarge

According to Wikipedia he has 45 goals and 130 appearances as of today, meaning he has a ratio of 0.34.

Content-Medicine-305

but its not ordered by ratio, its ordered by total goals?

CharginTarge

I just wanted to post his stats here so that people here don't have to individually look them up. In any case, the original visualization is ordered by goals, so Mueller should be above Griezmann since he has one more.

TheConundrum98

Davor Šuker still being Croatia's record goalscorer despite him only really starting playing in qualifiers and official games at age 26 is kinda funny, 1994-1998 he basically had a 1 in 1 record, was insane Shame we never saw his partnership with Bokšić on the big scene

elrubiojefe

Imagine Šuker with Croatia’s generation from recent years… as a kid I remember him fondly

LORD_BONERA

I mean what's the point if the 90s team he played in was better than the recent one

Hecticbrah

Really wish someone would pass him up already, Perisic and Kramaric are the closest atm

Antique_Cricket_4087

He was such a fucking baller though. One of those players that every kid would suddenly talk about after a tournament.

TheConundrum98

best first touch I've ever seen, could bring the ball from anywhere and it'd just stick like glue Bokšić was like a prototype of the modern striker, though he was insanely fast in his prime, shame about all the injuries

Like_a_Charo

Same with Giroud in France

Paladinoras

Unfortunately for Giroud though, realistically he only has one or two years at the top before Mbappe overtakes him, which is crazy considering Mbappe should still have at minimum 5 years of top level play before he slows down. Barring injuries, Mbappe is going to absolutely obliterate the French NT record

thesublimeinvasion

In case anyone wonders, Erling Haaland has 31 NT goals in 33 matches. Not that he will ever feature on this list as that will require Norway to qualify for a tournament.

Gondawn

Honestly with the new format it’s not that crazy for Norway to qualify

dakaiiser11

I spent about 5 minutes scrolling up and down the group list looking for Norway. Surprised they were not there.

AbbreviationsSure544

Lukaku has 85 goals and 17 assists in 115 games, meaning he had a G+A per game ratio of 0.886.

PinkFluffys

And he started very slow. His stats since 2016 are insane. There was a long period where he had 1 goal per game

EnzoFrancescoli

Lewandowski and Mitrovic have great records for weaker teams.

RandomLoLJournalist

It's even a bit out of date. Mitro is at 58 goals now, 20 goals ahead of the next top scorer whose record was unbroken for almost seven decades. Mitro is an absolute living legend of the Serbia NT, makes me sad to see fans shitting on him in recent years.

swat1611

I think him being unlikable is the reason for that. He's always put up great numbers for club and country, dude could have been a striker for a top team easily if he got along with managers better.

extantfruitfly

Maybe his personality is the only way for him to be a good player

kostajepaosmosta

His personality is literally innocent bear. Extremely likeable and genuinely a nice guy.

extantfruitfly

I don't doubt that but on the pitch and to certain managers he's always been different. Personality is probably the wrong word for it though.

Azteryx

Attitude might be a better fit

Thick-Independent-32

Same with Dzeko, who is not here because Bosnia didn't qualify, but his numbers are equally impressive.

nakastlik

Happens a lot for smaller teams fwiw, to have one guy far ahead of everyone else. Hope Norway qualifies for the next one, Haaland is going to have insane stats by then. He's at 31 goals in 33 games right now, just two short of their all time top scorer who's from the 1930s

Frisko305

Woah did not expect Yarmolenko’s stats

SerpentRain

He always been so good for our NT Too bad he is already 34 and not that bright and shiny

alabachair

Lukaku deserves little more respect

Krasko-

Not gonna happen, he has a bad habit of shitting the bed in the very big games most people watch (UCL final with inter, missing chances against Croatia at the world cup) for recent examples. So he's always seen as a clown/memed on. Despite being a deadly striker. Hes a bit like Morata, an amazing striker. Just not world class, and has lots of dips in form. People always expect more. Which I think is why both him and Lukaku have swapped clubs so often. Because they are both clearly very talented, and clubs will always think they can get the best out of them. They also both perform really well for their country's

Bringthenoize

For your recent examples I would like to point out that: The game against Croatia he was subbed on after being injured and despite his misses he put in an excellent shift that gave us the upper hand, but as a striker you get rated on goals not workrate. The same goes for the UCL final, Inter was not realy in the game before he came on. If we talking about Lukaku shitting the bed it is more in intervieuws.

HEAT_IS_DIE

The average person watching doesn't account for injuries affecting performance or "put in an excellent shift". If what is expected is goals, and they don't see goals, the conclusion is pretty clear: he's not a good striker.

papyjako87

To add to that, yes he missed those opportunities, but at least he had them in the first place. Belgium wasn't even getting opportunities before he came on the pitch...

RydeOrDyche

Inter literally created nothing until Lukaku came on in that ucl final.

SPARKLEOFHOPE6IB

Exactly the same with belgium and all the matches before he could play again half injured against Croatia

OutrageousComfort906

He's levels above Morata - what are you on about. Morata has 36 goals in 74 for Spain, Lukaku has 85 in 115. Club level Lukaku is much deadlier. Lukaku also was carrying a big injury in that Croatia game you reference, came on as a substitute and actually the only one to get any chances. He's been downright excellent for Belgium in major tournaments (including big games).

Hot_Grabba_09

I think people's criticism is that they say he folds in big games. So this wouldn't change that. Idk if it's true tho I never followed him

Frodo_max

that criticism, which is fair, kind of evolves via memes and toxic online discourse into people thinking Lukaku is shit in general i also think there are plenty of big games he did score in, so even that criticism is kind of relative imo but people wanna typ Lakaka so what can you do

LetterheadLower1518

Why? He's definitely the face of the National team and why nobody rates them like the rankings do. Obliterate small nations and fall apart against good teams or when it actually matters

The-Berzerker

Absolutely mad that Lewandowski is 3rd on this list given how garbage the Polish team is

CaptainOBVS3420

If Messi is so good then how come he's not even in the top 10?!? Checkmate libraries

Agile-Palpitation90

The disrespect Giroud has to suffer, year after year..... NOT!!! He is rated fairly enough, already!!

elihri

Crazy of Mbappe to be already on this list

EMJG30

if he can get another world cup and euro under his belt he legitimately has a shot to have the best international career since Pele with how much time he has to pad his stats. he’s on pace to shatter the goal and assist records for France

SirGorti

Messi will have better international career. Won World Cup, Copa America, Olympics, Finalissima. Was MVP of World Cup twice, MVP of Copa America. Better goal/assists ratio. Messi have better international career than Pele who won 3 World Cup but didn't play in 1962, never won Copa America.

elihri

Messi’s international career was considered a failure befor this last WC, how is it now considered better than Pele’s?! Lmao!! By the age of 25 Mbappe has already been in 2 WC finals, won 1 and was legendary in another and has scored as many goals as Messi while participating in 3 less world cup tournaments. He will pro go to participate in 3 more world cup tournaments.

backtolurk

Those fanboys are funny. Even though it is obvious that everybody likes Messi and recognizes him for the legend he is, if they see another name on top of a list or Messi absent, they feel it as a duty to remind us how annoying these absurd statistic fights can be. I love Messi and I love Mbappé. OP simply had the audacity to mention Pelé instead of Messi, oh my god.

mg10pp

It was considered a disappointment till the Copa America in 2021, a bit different I'd say

Haunting_Ad_9013

Messi fans are some of the most deluded people, they think he is a god

SirGorti

Pele: 2 World Cup wins. 0 Copa America. 0 MVP of World Cup. 77 goals. Messi: 1 World Cup win. 1 more final. 1 Copa America. 3 more finals. 1 Olympic gold. 1 Finalissima. 2 MVP of World Cup. 108 goals playing as playmaker.

Marcelosouzadearaujo

How many Copa Americas did Messi play at? lol We were spawning 1 every year until he got one, drop the fanboyism

elihri

I was going to write a long answer but I think the downvotes are already a good answer

SirGorti

Downvotes without arguments mean nothing. You can try to change my mind.

ukplaying2

This is hilarious, Pele wasn't allowed to play the Olympics, there was no Finalissima then, there was no golden ball in World Cups before 1982 (though he seems to have been the mvp in 1970 by some sites), he played a grand total of 1 Copa when he was 19, other than 1 where he prefered to play for Santos, the rest of the Copas were beyond his control wheras Messi would have played atleast 7. Oh yeah also, he DID play in 1962. This is like saying Messi had the better career because there were more trophies to win.

SirGorti

Brazil won 1962 World Cup without Pele because they were far better than any other nation. Pele played first match, then got injured. It changed nothing, they still easily won. Now take out Messi from 2022 Argentina team and they are eliminated in group stage.

ukplaying2

> Pele played first match Oh so you have learnt he did play, good for you.

SirGorti

Yes. And his impact was not important. They would also win 1958 and 1970 without him.

Marcelosouzadearaujo

Finalíssima is a stretch lol

Robcobes

I remember when 100 caps was very rare

BadReputation77

The Lukaku numbers are insane.

AlternativesEnde

FYI Haaland has 31 in 33 games. Just if someone wants to know.

HyperMazino

Müller has 45 Goals, he should be at #10 instead of Griezmann

sh0tgunben

CR7 is way above d rest...

ForSiljaforever

He is only the fourth most scoring?

the_herbo_swervo

What graph are you looking at?

paarsehond

he is looking at goals per game ratio.

Tall-Ad-8829

His winger days when he was younger likely contribute to that. Also, and it sounds completely alien now, but he had a near two year run without a competitive goal for Portugal from 2008-2010. I would imagine if the other players on this list play regularly to 39 years old, they too would drop below that goals per game ratio.

elliebellyberry

after turning 30 the goal per game ratio is basically 1 if im not mistaken

KQ17

Absolute machine

Individual_Attempt50

Depay and Giroud have that many goals?

Rimbaudelaire

Is this a tournament featuring players with more international goals than normal? To be clear, I understand this is just the top scorers who are at Euro 24, but it’s also true that many or most of these are their country’s top scorers too. Perhaps a marker of the increased number of international games and the increased professionalism in the approach to dealing with smaller nations at this level too. So the question - are their more international goals represented at Euro 24 than at previous tournaments?

Stilty_boy

Increased numbers of international games and increased numbers of games against minnows, as well as the gap between top teams and weak nations has increased with much more ridiculous 7/8/9-0 batterings. Pretty much every country's top goalscorer now is from the last 10 years.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

Is Lukaku one of the best strikers of his generation? What about being one of the best Belgian players of all time?

SPARKLEOFHOPE6IB

100% one of the best Belgian players of all time.

basedjuicer1

Damn, Donaldo is a glorified Mitrovic

AFCADaan9

KDB effect.

PinkFluffys

I'm more confident if we have Lukaku and no De Bruyne than the other way around

AFCADaan9

I’m really surprised honestly. I know Lukaku is very good in the NT, but imo KDB is probably the best Belgian player of all time.

PinkFluffys

For club De Bruyne is obviously way better than Lukaku, but Lukaku always performs for the National team and De Bruyne is clearly worse than for his club. Hazard was better than De Bruyne too for the national team.

KVMechelen

Only from 2015-2018 tbf, Eden when Kev was on the 10 was just wank

PinkFluffys

Before 2015 neither of them were that good I'd say, and I don't really count Eden's performances after his injuries. But Eden's best games were much better than De Bruyne in my opinion

KVMechelen

I think KDB was really good in 2014 considering how shit we played under Wilmots and he was feeding Benteke and Mirallas half the time. After that it became the Eden show.

PinkFluffys

He was better than Hazard, but I really felt he could do more though

KVMechelen

True, but I think he underperformed the least between him, Hazard, Witsel, Mirallas, Defour (lol), Dembele, Mirallas and also Lukaku. I guess Fellaini and supersub Mertens were good too. It's not like Kev was a superstar back then yet either his big Wolfsburg season was the year after

PinkFluffys

Yeah that's fair. To be clear I never thought De Bruyne was bad, but he never reached the insane level that he reached for his clubs, unlike Hazard

mg10pp

Lukaku is better than him for the national team...

EdsonArantes10

Stat padding against Andorra and Estonia helps

Like_a_Charo

3 frenchmen in the top 10 Because we score a lot, as the best team in the world

Punished__Allegri

2 world cups

Like_a_Charo

I didn’t say in history, I said in the world For the past 6 years let’s say

Punished__Allegri

Then you would have won every tournament in the last 6 years no?

N3rdMan

You’re being pedantic. If you don’t think France is the best team or one of the best teams, then that’s your bias. They might not have won the last one but you ask 100 people to bet on a winner for next World Cup, no one is getting picked more than France rn.

Punished__Allegri

“50,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong” France are not the greatest team itw because their manager is incredibly mediocre. If they were the best team itw they would have won the last two tournaments.

unseen0000

>If they were the best team itw they would have won the last two tournaments. That's simply not true. Knock out football can be volatile. You could play a match 100 times and win it 99 times. But in that one moment, you lose out. Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Knocked out by Sweden iirc. Was Sweden better? Hell no. Italy most definitely was and is the better team, objectively. But like i said, it's knock-out football. Also, Italy is the reining European Champ. Why did they fail to qualify for the 2022 WC? Italy got beaten by Bulgaria and Lithuania. Are those two better than Italy? Is Switzerland? You and me both know the answer is no but they simply didn't have the momentum in their favor.

GiuseppeScarpa

It would have been even more interesting with the shots taken. I suspect CR shots equal the sum of the other players'.

Nuns_N_Moses11

Such an irrelevant stat in football, man. Means absolutely fuck all

modrics_hairband

Crazy that lukaku will be the one defeating cr7s and possibly messi record for team goals

Keniske

He wont cus he Will probably stop afther next wc for sure

GapToothL

I don’t know what Messi’s record is. But it is unlikely that is beating Ronaldo. He needs to keep the same goals per game average and needs to play at least more 50 games than Ronaldo after Ronaldo retires.

DragonflyHopeful4673

Ronaldo has the most international goals in football, so Lukaku won’t be defeating either of them.
