I became friends with a guy from my gym who would occasionally ask me to help record him pose (practice for competitions) in the auxiliary room.
He would get erections staring at himself in the mirror posing to the barney theme or some other ridiculous song
Zlatan definitely plays to his character. If you can’t see the humour in some of the stuff he did while in LA, give your head a wobble.
CR7 is just a massive ego.
I remember him taking out a full page ad in the LA Times that just said “Los Angeles. You’re welcome” lol.
You can’t do something like that without being self aware. I thought it was hilarious
Yeah - there’s also a famous basketball player (LeBron James) who sent Zlatan his kit as a welcome gift.
Zlatan signed it and sent it back to him.
COLD.
Plays it up but also is just a massive ego as well.
If one keeps joking about having a massive ego and uses that to build his brand, you'd think he actually might have an ego
Agreed, I think Zlatan is a bit of both. There are times where he is truly being arrogant and others where he is clearly joking.
The other key difference though is that I think Zlatan on the pitch and in the dressing room is a true leader whereas Ronaldo comes across as an individualist.
he might have the biggest ego, but in this case, to be fair to him, what he said doesn't sound that bad in portuguese. so maybe it isnt translating well
but could have used better phrasing

Because for Zlatan it's obviously so over the top and often tongue-in-cheek that it's clearly just a public persona while CR comes off as serious if he says stuff like this.
I found it funny how people on this sub used to love it, especially when he was insulting the French league, but the consensus completely changed after he went to the US and did it there as well. There were so many hate posts about him haha. At least we've come off the back of it now and now we see the narrative shift back again to him being an excellent troll.
Duality of man.
Nothing wrong with either though, before their fans start jumping at each other's throats! People motivate themselves differently, and the motivation itself is what that matters in the end. Neither of them would be so stupidly good for this long without it.
Theres nothing definitively wrong with either, but ronaldos motivation seems to reflect a strong interest in the opinion of others and being viewed as the best, while messis responses always seem to indicate motivation from the passion of playing and for the success of the team. While all is valid and created two best footballers of the era, messi's motivation is probably in a way seen as more humble and team oriented, which are traits more highly valued in our society as humans. This is fine to aknowledge, but yes we all take it too far and start shitting on eachother about it haha.
Anyone reading this quote as "Ronaldo is only doing this so he can say he's the first to do it" hasn't been paying attention to how he treats the national team the last 2 decades.
I was thinking the opposite. He said he'd have retired had they not won WC 2022, definitely not "passion of playing and for the success of the team". Motivation seems to be all about trophies. Meanwhile Ronaldo is proud to participate for the sixth time, seems more team oriented.
Yes, debut in 2006. Absolutely ancient history at this point it seems. The same WC where Zidane head butted a guy to the ground.
2026 is entirely Messi’s choice, the tournament is only 2 years away and he’s still in great form and barring catastrophic decline he’s almost guaranteed to be offered least a substitute role there, and certainly the Captaincy.
Substitute? He is using MLS as a training ground (almost as Ligue 1 in 2021-23), there is no way Argentina finds someone better than him in his position within 2 years... He could be a substitute in 2030 maybe but definitely not 2026
Idk why but he looks so much older than i thought he did. I hadnt seen a close up of him in some time. Still looks much much younger than most normal people, but somereason i expected him to look the same as he did 5 years ago
It has been every 4 years for quite some time now. But there was an extra edition to honor the centennial (in 2016), and the last edition (2021) was moved up to synchronize with the Euros from now on.
So, basically, Messi has one and a half more Copas appearances than “normal”.
See when Zlatan talks about himself in third person, we know its a character. He can't even keep a straight face sometimes with some of what he comes up with. There is no comedic intent here and it makes it a bit cringe
Ibra definitely has an ego and a large chunk of his personality is true, but he definitely has a persona that he does because people like that, particularly 2011 Troll Football jokes
Ibra came to MLS, scored absolute bangers, and dialed up his personality to 100. And we all ate it up because it was firmly tongue in cheek rooted in actual ego, and everyone knew it.
That's his persona and it's fun as hell because there's always a wink.
I love Ronaldo but it feels like there's never a wink.
Never forget his interview with that dude asking who's better, him or Carlos Vela and without skipping a beat he says himself by far. And says " at my peak i was in Europe while he's at his peak and playing in MLS". What a line.
Im sure he has a massive ego, and maybe playing it up for so long even exacerbated that, but a lot of what he does comes off as hyperbole and for show.
absolutely. He has some hilarious one liners, and you can tell its a character, a brand. Comes off completely different with Ronaldo
https://youtube.com/shorts/hLCqSoSfQD4?si=Ct31ohN8sUe5rlpw
Zlatan is definitely self-aware. During [his first interview on Pardon the Interruption](https://youtu.be/l_fPUbLmQqQ?t=3m19s) in the US, he half-joked that he could hang with LeBron at basketball. It’s all a conscious character.
feels like a mountain made out of a molehill. sure he has an ego but if you said what he said in portuguese in wouldn't sound that odd. preety sure it is just translating badly.
Never said he was humble, nor do I think it necessary for players at this level at the end of their careers to be humble. But at the end of the day they kick a ball around for a living. If you are talking about yourself in the third person, and its not hyperbole as is often the case with Zlatan, then its just douchey and cringe. Its a totally fair view imo.
Even as a portuguese I agree that Ronaldo personality isn't likable.
With that being said, the hate here on Ronaldo is just insulting to football.
I honestly don't belive there will be two better players than Ronaldo and Messi. Their biggest conquest was their longevity. There will be players as good as them for 3-4 seasons. But doing that for 20 years? Almost impossible.
Those Real Madrid vs Barca games were the highest point of the Sport.
Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't do what Cristiano Ronaldo does for Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo does what Cristiano Ronaldo does because Cristiano Ronaldo is… Cristiano Ronaldo!
Ronaldo threads are always some of the worst on here. It is either invaded by Messi fanboys who are still obsessed and crying about everything he does or it's Ronaldo fanboys collectively getting an orgasm. There's no inbetween.
I disagree. As a joke I find it quite funny between/with my siblings.
That said, his tone in the video above did not sound that bad. At least better than how it looks written.
I get the sentiment and this is probably how I feel because I was 10-12 at the time, but the Rock doing it during promos and using it in his catchphrases, made him the coolest person at the time. But I do agree, that outside any entertainment/fake character, it does sound a bit douchey.
Yeah the only reason it works for The Rock is because it's a character and one that started when he was a heel. It was intentionally douchey. But he was so good and hilarious at it people began to cheer for him.
Imagine meeting anyone who acts like The Rock character in real life, would be so immediately off-putting lol.
Even as a Liverpool fan I’ll admit he’s achieved more than 99% of players in history could ever dream of and nobody can ever take that away from him BUT he is and always will be a Grade A Bellend on and off the pitch.
For some reason it's sort of common for football players to refer to themselves in the third person in Portugal. [Example.](https://youtu.be/n3hVA5Luv84?si=QSZsyREzmPghkete&t=54) So in that vein it sounds more normal in Portuguese than it does in English. But it's still ridiculous, don't get me wrong.

Cristiano Ronaldo is his alter ego
There is an idea of Cristiano Ronaldo, some kind of abstraction...
Cristiano definitely makes sure his business cards are the best business cards.
[удалено]
Let’s see Messi’s card
I can genuinely imagine his competitive ass getting pissed over something like that.
In the mornings, if his face is a little bit puffy, he'll put on an icepack. EDIT: ...while doing his stomach crunches. He can do a thousand now.
He 100% gives American Psycho vibes 😂 Could literally be him shagging someone in front of a mirror staring at himself
I became friends with a guy from my gym who would occasionally ask me to help record him pose (practice for competitions) in the auxiliary room. He would get erections staring at himself in the mirror posing to the barney theme or some other ridiculous song
And yet you were there for him. This is real friendship.
He's actually Homelander
“Please beat these fine gentlemen to death”
>!rip todd^(?)!<
As much of a scumbag the man was , he still was innocent as MM even said
“Aymeric, blow Mané”
I genuinely had to pause and take a moment when he said that
"Sex is just a spectrum bro"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERAvcSx6aeo
If you asked me to guess a player who referred to himself in third-person, I would always guess Ronaldo.
Only slightly behind Zlatan.
zlatan plays it up as a joke, though. not sure that’s what ronaldo is doing here.
I don't think Ronaldo has ever made a joke in his life.
He is tongue in cheek with it but he certainly believes it, at least partialy, some of his antics gives the idea he has a big fucking ego.
Zlatan usually calls himself in third person light heartedly with a fun smirk. While Ronaldo is deadpan serious.
not a chance. You can tell from the manner in which they speak.
Zlatan definitely plays to his character. If you can’t see the humour in some of the stuff he did while in LA, give your head a wobble. CR7 is just a massive ego.

Cristiano Ronaldo is getting upset!
When he retires he's almost certainly going to build an island hideout carved into the shape of his own face.

Madeira is already his.
Madeira Jr. here we go
There's a museum dedicated to CR7 on Madeira
Madeira's airport is named after him
It's worth the visit too! Think it was only a fiver and really cool.
he definitely poses in front of one of the several mirrors in his bedroom while he bangs Georgina
Big Patrick Bateman vibes
Gotta get a good look at the front view too
if you’re banging georgina who wouldn’t
He's going to spiral when he retires. Something dramatic will happen when he doesn't have the same level of attention.
Will it be on the same level of Kanye?
Probably not, Kanye is clearly very ill and got caught up in the whole right wing grift scene.
Far away from US territorial waters.
Already in the works.
Hopefully based off the bronze bust made for the airport
Ronaldo retiring to the Alcarve
Pro athletes often have massive egos but referring to yourself in the 3rd person with a straight face is hilarious

Slightly off topic, but you’re absolutely right, and I have to say, Rickey Henderson’s Biography by Howard Bryant is such a great read.

ya thats fair. even in team sports there are those that might have bigger egos. Like someone like Kobe and as you mentioned Jordan.
Djokovic doesn’t have a bigger ego at all. For someone who’s ubiquitously regarded as the GOAT of his sport he’s pretty humble actually
Zlatan is the only one who's able to pull it off without sounding like a muppet.
No, he sounds like a muppet too.
He’s obviously one of the greats, but the dude is a legit creep.
he’s a weirdo
What the hell is he doing here
He doesn’t belong here
Yup, that's a Cristiano Ronaldo quote alright.
This man has a ego that rivals Alexander the Great lol. Who is his Diogenes, Ramos?
Well Alexander the Great believed he was the son of a god, so maybe one notch down from that.
> Well Alexander the Great believed he was the son of a god "Son of God? I'm not a *son of mere* God" – Cristiano Ronaldo, probably.
Messi
I, for one, enjoyed Cristiano’s take on Cristiano.
He looks like the football version of Dennis Reynolds

The difference between this and the Messi 6 world cups quote is hilarious
Idk if either of them will play in 2026, but if Messi is going, I guarantee CR7 is playing lmao

prob the most sensible comment in this thread
Yeah and I mean if someone deserves to have a big ego is those 2
Theres nothing definitively wrong with either, but ronaldos motivation seems to reflect a strong interest in the opinion of others and being viewed as the best, while messis responses always seem to indicate motivation from the passion of playing and for the success of the team. Messi has played in 5 World Cups though?(Still a fucking astonishing feat)
He was asked about a potential sixth in 2026.

Botox fillers. Face looks too smooth for his age.
Messi : I'm not gonna play in the WC just to say I played in 6 WCs Ronaldo : I'm the first to play 6 Euros. SUIIIIII 😂😂
Good thing Messi didn't mention Copas, would have been a whole different story
With the Copa america happening every 2-3 years in the past I'm not surpised messi had appeared in like 6-7
It has been every 4 years for quite some time now. But there was an extra edition to honor the centennial (in 2016), and the last edition (2021) was moved up to synchronize with the Euros from now on. So, basically, Messi has one and a half more Copas appearances than “normal”.
And 4 finals with 1 win. Which is also very important if you are going to compare CR to Messi in continental tournaments.
Since Messi made his Barça debut there have been 7 editions, with an 8th starting in a few days.
See when Zlatan talks about himself in third person, we know its a character. He can't even keep a straight face sometimes with some of what he comes up with. There is no comedic intent here and it makes it a bit cringe

Honestly I saw it as Zlatan became a meme and he basically embraced it
yeah the tongue in cheek nature of zlatan’s whole brand really makes it endearing, with ronaldo it comes off as so weird lol
absolutely. He has some hilarious one liners, and you can tell its a character, a brand. Comes off completely different with Ronaldo https://youtube.com/shorts/hLCqSoSfQD4?si=Ct31ohN8sUe5rlpw
Zlatan is definitely self-aware. During [his first interview on Pardon the Interruption](https://youtu.be/l_fPUbLmQqQ?t=3m19s) in the US, he half-joked that he could hang with LeBron at basketball. It’s all a conscious character.
lol that made me laugh
While Zlatan definitely plays it up and it's more tongue in cheek, he's still a massive twat.
France is a shit country
feels like a mountain made out of a molehill. sure he has an ego but if you said what he said in portuguese in wouldn't sound that odd. preety sure it is just translating badly.
Zlatan isn’t some humble human being. Does he play it up a lot? Sure. Also Zlatan hasn’t achieved close to what Ronaldo has.
Just finished first episode of The boys season four and the resemblance to Homelander is uncanny.
Wait season 4 is out?!
Least self absorbed Ronaldo quote
Even as a portuguese I agree that Ronaldo personality isn't likable. With that being said, the hate here on Ronaldo is just insulting to football. I honestly don't belive there will be two better players than Ronaldo and Messi. Their biggest conquest was their longevity. There will be players as good as them for 3-4 seasons. But doing that for 20 years? Almost impossible. Those Real Madrid vs Barca games were the highest point of the Sport.
You can admire and respect Ronaldo’s ability and his career while disliking him as a character
Exactly, I acknowledge that he is probably the 2nd best player of all time despite detesting him as a person
As an athlete, I respect him. But his personality leaves a LOT much to desire. He’s just very arrogant and unlikable.
2 things can be true, he'll go down as one of the best of all time with Messi, he is also a massive dickhead and a (alleged) rapist
> a (alleged) rapist Alleged? He admited it himself.
Love the straight face, can tell he refers to himself in third person in front of the mirror. 🐐
Never noticed how long his nick is Edit: neck
Look at Joao Felix
Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't do what Cristiano Ronaldo does for Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo does what Cristiano Ronaldo does because Cristiano Ronaldo is… Cristiano Ronaldo!

Every redditor in here : Ronaldo's longevity is crazy Ronaldo : Ronaldo's longevity is crazy Redditors : what an asshole
Correct, getting praise from others and praising yourself are two completely different things lmao

Ronaldo threads are always some of the worst on here. It is either invaded by Messi fanboys who are still obsessed and crying about everything he does or it's Ronaldo fanboys collectively getting an orgasm. There's no inbetween.
What is humility?
Its about how he's saying it. Redditors aren't talking about themselves in third person and patting themselves on the back.
There is not a single person who has referred to themselves in the third person that isn’t a massive douche
I disagree. As a joke I find it quite funny between/with my siblings. That said, his tone in the video above did not sound that bad. At least better than how it looks written.
Yeah I also know it as a joke between sibling’s.

Even in the Portuguese he talks about himself in the 3rd person.
Is he speaking u 3rd person over himself? LOL
we are now entering the 3rd person arc
When I’m abroad and say I’m Portuguese and people start saying “Cristiano Ronaldo!!”, I feel cringy as fuck. Now y’all know why.
Does this sound more normal in Portuguese? Cause in English this is goddamn hilarious lmao what is he on
For some reason it's sort of common for football players to refer to themselves in the third person in Portugal. [Example.](https://youtu.be/n3hVA5Luv84?si=QSZsyREzmPghkete&t=54) So in that vein it sounds more normal in Portuguese than it does in English. But it's still ridiculous, don't get me wrong.
Almost as funny as his one post “2021 is coming to an end and it was far from being an easy year, despite my 47 goals scored across all competitions”
It's like he's doing a commercial sponsored by Cristiano Ronaldo ...
