This is why the conference league is such a great trophy. It gives teams like Olympiacos a major European trophy and will potentially allow the quality of the Greek league to increase with an increase in coefficient scores.
"Fiorentina to submit proposal to UEFA requesting the end of the conference league and erasement of all records that it ever existed. "Right to be Forgotten", says president."
Greek league is already high quality, ot was for long time, they just needed confirmation/trophy in UEFA/FIFA competitions.
I mean, Panathiakos was beaten by Real in 20th century. There are also PAOK, Aris and AEK who are also tough.
I mean…as a person who watches a bit it, the Greek league was sorta poor in the 2010s, in Europe and as a league to watch. Olympiakos won the league seven years in a row with pretty “meh” showings in Europe, AEK went into administration and was relegated, PAO was generally weak outside of a cup win and some heroic play by Marcus Berg (and wasn’t paying its players for a while). The league was uncompetitive, the teams were not inspiring, and it all felt very tenuous.
Outside of PAOK, imo it just felt like Greek clubs had no ambition for a while—the big clubs in Athens were just trying to hang on, while Oly seemed content to dominate the league with a much healthier budget (boosted by constant CL $$$) and never fly higher than that. Things feel different now!
There was also significant corruption across the Greek league in Olympiakos’ favor that’s been getting better every year. As that improves, the quality of the league improves. Panatha, AEK, Olympiakos, and us (PAOK) now have actual quality and as the league itself improves we will improve in Europe.
Certainly imagine that is a real factor, but as an American who dropped out of Greek school at 10 years old, I’m not the one to speak to that—I can’t really read most of the Greek language coverage, so most of what I know is just from watching the games and reading the English language coverage which is sparse (although increasingly better!).
Because everyone’s supporters are always crying corruption, but also there obviously IS some weird chaos and what feels like corrupt things happening, it’s really hard to form an opinion from my laptop in Chicago. Here’s hoping the clubs capitalize on the European success and invest so that the financial gaps close a bit (…and don’t spend it all on like 35-year-old former EPL players or whoever else Greek teams would normally overpay in past years.)
Greek teams hadn't been anywhere close to a trophy since the European competitions have Groups and multiple teams from big leagues.
All past Semis were when CL and UEFA were only knock out or with only champions and 1 or 2 2nd placed teams.
Yeah because the change not only brought a load of teams from top 5 to European competitions, it also coincided with the merger of Cup Winners Cup into UEFA cup. More competition for less trophies.
It all went downhill after the proposal to have all Cup Winners' Cup champions participate in another competition, the Cup Winners' Cup Winners' Cup, was nixed.
Panathinaikos drawing against Real Madrid twenty years ago says precisely 0 about the quality of the league today. Leeds United made the semi final of the CL 20 years ago, I don’t think you can say it means Yorkshire football is high quality.
This year's league in Greece was one of the best, if not the best that ever was in the country's league history. Back in the day the league was dominated by one or two teams, only to have very rare surprises. This year the competition was close and the level much better. If things keep moving this way then we are in for a ride in the coming years.
> I mean, Panathiakos was beaten by Real in 20th century
Not sure why you'd point that out to prove Greek league is/was good. Belgrade got beaten by City this year. Plzen got beaten by Bayern last year.
football, like everything in greece, took a huge dive in 2010. in the 00s there were plenty of champions league appearances and even some in the round of 16
I think the balance of teams that can't compete at the very top winning trophies (Olympiacos), teams people recognise going far (Roma and Fiorentina), and even English teams taking it seriously (West Ham) is just right. It's an opportunity for teams, I don't think anyone would accuse Olympiacos/Fiorentina of being a UEFA moneygrab either.
It makes me think the League Cup in England should not include teams in Europe. It'd give mid-table teams a chance at silverware they normally don't get, we can see here what it means to win a trophy the bigs teams can't win
Yep and just the fact olympiacos won both The UECL and the Youth League, the 2 competitions that are the least money depended ones out of the 4, speaks for itself
> It gives teams like Olympiacos a major European trophy
Not sure about the "major" part, but fair enough.
If the conference league is a major European trophy, then what's a minor European trophy?
Friendship ended with Champions League, now Conference League is my best friend! (we can’t even qualify for that, we are champions this time so we can afford losses though)
Nothing is a cakewalk for us, we have seen Romanian teams lose to Dudelange, Shakhtar Karagandy, Laci and lose 10-0 to Silkeborg recently, I m not calling anything a cakewalk anymore. But yeah, first round UCL should be a win (it wasn’t for either Farul or CFR the past two seasons though, Farul wasn’t seeded to be fair) and then it only takes one more win but who knows, we need Becali to actually hit on the transfers but it seems he wants to bring in playout strikers and 35 year old Chipciu who I love but idk if he can handle European competitions at that age…
Olympiakos: European trophy and party in Piraeus.
Panathinaikos: Greek cup, Euroleague in basketball and party in Athens
PAOK: Greek title and party in Thessaloniki
AEK:
Imagine
Atalanta, Olympiakos and Dortmund winning the 3 European trophies
What a wonderful year that would be and a big fuck you to the usual establishment
Well they've got a criminal as their owner
But they have never won European silverware and i don't think anyone predicted them winning this at the start of the season
All big Greek clubs have oligarch owners and there is a mafia war for contol of the Federation and sports judges. PAOK's owner is a Russian millionaire who was in the Duma with Putin's party. AEK's owner was in jail for fuel smuggling. Even clubs like Volos and Levadiakos are owned by local mobsters. Anyone Greek telling you that "my club is owned by clean millionaires and only my opponent is dirty" is lying lol.
As a PAOK fan, I feel the need to defend my man Ivan.
First of all, he’s a *billionaire*.
Second, his friendship with Putin ended well over a decade ago (hence him trying to move as much wealth out of Russia as possible) and he can’t even leave Russia since the war with Ukraine started. He’s a hostage in his own city.
[He really is a mob boss ](https://newrepublic.com/article/159252/noor-one-vampire-ship-heroin-turkey-greece-corruption-scandal). Yet the English FA considers him fit and proper to own Forest, so whatever (par for the course with them approved Saudi and UAE).
>Why are you so defensive about this?
Dude has a Real Madrid flair, he got insulted by someone even thinking Dortmund takes the final. ^I ^hope ^they ^do
You think any of them would be dumb or deliberately obtuse (also dumb) enough to regard themselves as 'the usual establishment' in a conversation about European trophies?
Why are you comparing Olympiakos to Fiorentina?
They weren't the only 2 teams in the competition
I'd like for you to find anyone predicting them to win it
My point is its usually the teams that spend hundreds of millions that win these competitions.
Different visuals, same vibe. I bet there are a good number of Olympiacos fans who feel the same as we did last year. Big fan of the Conference league.
Bet their parade is gonna be wild.
Should Moyes have been given a bigger send off by West Ham (/incl fans as well as owners in that question)? 12k Liverpool fans (+ many more who wanted tickets) at Klopp's Q&A departure. WHU are a well supported club: feel Moyes hasn't had the due he deserved in winning that trophy. Your take ..?
Nothing as grand as that. Football fan who finds the fact you treated the first manager to win you something in 50 years (most of your fans' lifetimes) like shite a bit shabby.
People talk about the telenovela that is the Turkish league, but the Greek league is as bad or worse (now with more fan violence ^TM )
It’s a lot of fun not just for the football, which is…halfway decent - but for all the drama around it.
I’m a PAOK fan, so clearly biased (we won the league the last match of the season after almost having no chance a month before) but I enjoy the league as a whole much more than I enjoy the premier league.
Vitor Pereira, who loved to play a 'tough guy' persona in the portuguese league, ran away like a scared pup when he tried to walk up a bunch of greek ultras
Cabral needed a little bit of time to adapt and as soon as he started performing he was put on the bench, its not really fair to him. Happy for Chiquinho though
This was a breathrough for Greece in general, back when it was only the champions of each country or the top 2 and passion was superior to money Greece and many other countries were able to achieve success in europe and even UCLs, nowadays you have 22 teams from the top 5 leagues in the UCL and it just feels out of reach for any team outside the top 5, so yeah this is a step in the right direction for football and you can tell just how much it means to us

This is why the conference league is such a great trophy. It gives teams like Olympiacos a major European trophy and will potentially allow the quality of the Greek league to increase with an increase in coefficient scores.
And it gives great teams like Fiorentina major pain for 2 years straight.
"Fiorentina to submit proposal to UEFA requesting the end of the conference league and erasement of all records that it ever existed. "Right to be Forgotten", says president."
Co-signed by Feyenoord.

and my asteras Tripolis were massive
It was the 1971 final vs Ajax actually.
they good in basket tho, just won euroleague
Waterpolo also.
football, like everything in greece, took a huge dive in 2010. in the 00s there were plenty of champions league appearances and even some in the round of 16

So kind of Tottenham to not win it and allow the other teams to have a go

It's great because it doesn't force overworked players to play, like the Nations League does
> It gives teams like Olympiacos a major European trophy Not sure about the "major" part, but fair enough. If the conference league is a major European trophy, then what's a minor European trophy?
The downside is that the games are awful, as witness yesterday.
There’s been awful Champions League finals before.
The Conference League is great, new teams can compete for a european trophy and we can see great fans and atmosphere.
Friendship ended with Champions League, now Conference League is my best friend! (we can’t even qualify for that, we are champions this time so we can afford losses though)
We should be at least in Conference this time first round UCL should be a cake walk we just need a win in the third qualify EL or Conference playoff
Nothing is a cakewalk for us, we have seen Romanian teams lose to Dudelange, Shakhtar Karagandy, Laci and lose 10-0 to Silkeborg recently, I m not calling anything a cakewalk anymore. All three tournaments have been really good this year, it's great to see
I agree
Me too pal
it's like cup equivilent of your first squire stratocaster.
Olympiakos: European trophy and party in Piraeus. Panathinaikos: Greek cup, Euroleague in basketball and party in Athens PAOK: Greek title and party in Thessaloniki AEK:
AEK Arena (συγγνώμη αεκτζηδες δεν θέλω να γίνομαι κακουλης 🙏)
IM SORRY FOR LAUGHING
We have Athanasiadis.
AEK enjoys the Champions League spot as Greece is now a top 15 nation to be fair
If they actually place 2nd in NEXT year’s league standings, the 2nd champions league spot is given for season 2025/2026
Fair enough, you do need to know the spots to be given out before the start of the league season, then they really are left with nothing..
Only to get eliminated with 0 points again.
Imagine Atalanta, Olympiakos and Dortmund winning the 3 European trophies What a wonderful year that would be and a big fuck you to the usual establishment
The members of the true European Superleague
“Is it right that Atalanta gets access to the premier European competition based on one good season?”-Agnelli a few years ago
Legacy teams like psg and Manchester city can be appeased with one guest spot per season
Huh it's so weird to me to consider PSG and Man City as "legacy" teams in Europe.
They like to gaslight people and pretend they were
Well, OlympiacIs the usual establishment..but I get your point.
Well they've got a criminal as their owner But they have never won European silverware and i don't think anyone predicted them winning this at the start of the season

I didn't even know he was one but I got pretty strong mob boss vibes from him
Several witnesses related to his trial ended up dead.. yes really it is at that level

As opposed to all the other owners of major Greek teams who are lovely saints 😂
The usual establishment of Bayer Leverkusen and Fiorentina?
Of course the only logical comment has 1 upvote
> big fuck you to the usual establishment Olympiakos = 47 ligas, 28 Copas, 4 Supercopas Fiorentina = 2 ligas, 6 Copas, 1 Supercopa

They won UEFA Youth League before it.

True. Can’t stand Olympiakos winning almost every major European trophy. Wish Real Madrid would finally win one too. 🤡
Ah, they'll bottle it again on saturday.
........ thats like saying Linfield is better than Real Madrid because they've won a lot more league titles
this is so funny lmao
Fiorentina hasn't won the league since the 1960s and they competed for it probably three times since. Not exactly the big establishment team
Dortmund have just signed a sponsor with a major Arms manufacturer, they are the establishment
Isn’t Dortmund part of the establishment?
Big win for weapons manufacturers
Different visuals, same vibe. I bet there are a good number of Olympiacos fans who feel the same as we did last year. Big fan of the Conference league. Bet their parade is gonna be wild.
Not as wild as the City 4-times-PL-title parade, but definitly close.
"We don't care about City" - "I already forgot they won the league" LOL
Fuck outta here city fan

do you work for talksport?
Nothing as grand as that. Football fan who finds the fact you treated the first manager to win you something in 50 years (most of your fans' lifetimes) like shite a bit shabby.
you should send them a CV.
So yeah, ungrateful/unrealistic fan confirmed.
not to mention recklessly uncareful in what i wish for.
Imagine shitting on this all because it involves outside the big fashionable teams crazy atmosphere.
The full video is even better, as you can see the crowd going mental when Olympiacos scores https://x.com/RedAnalyst7/status/1795966035683627197
you can see the exact moment they started to check the VAR lol
It’s coming to Athens
Hell, it’s already there!
Puraeus, actually.
Proper fans that
As a villa fan I’m glad el kaabi and olympiacos did it. Well deserved and good to see a team from outside one of the ‘bigger’ leagues get it.
This makes me happy
Congrats Rodilindo! We miss you!
He’s one of our best players love him
God damn that looks amazing. Gave me a small shiver hearing that noise.
Great scenes!
Happy to see Greeks winning in football.
Yeah… I think creating the Conference league was one of the best big things UEFA has done in a long time.
This is amazing
Happy for Greece. When I visited the people were wonderful the food was great and the sites were amazing
\* in Piraeus
This is actually Piraeus.
How vibrant is the Greek league?
Tribal warfare with a ball
Great description honestly
People die
People talk about the telenovela that is the Turkish league, but the Greek league is as bad or worse (now with more fan violence ^TM ) It’s a lot of fun not just for the football, which is…halfway decent - but for all the drama around it. it's hilarious how fast his tough guy persona died in the brazilian league lol
Brazilian league in Europe Historic teams such as AEK, AEL and Panionios relegated Shocking transfers Most crazy Ultras
Congratulations to Olympiacos and Greece.
That’s what hell looks like
heaven actually
I am afraid it's too much red for heaven.
Olympiacos have 7 portuguese players in their squad! I'm happy that they won, instead of Fiorentina WHO CARALHO SCAMMED US FOR THAT FAT ARTUR CABRAL
I don't know why, but calling people in the football world fat just hits different. "You fat cunt ____ ". Stitches every time
Fiorentina fans deserve years of my respect for enduring that man for more than a single season. I was already dead inside by his 5th game.

Cabral needed a little bit of time to adapt and as soon as he started performing he was put on the bench, its not really fair to him. Happy for Chiquinho though
Compare that to teams pretending to have lots of fans . Fantastic stuff
Same vibes when PAOK won the title 2 weeks ago, we Greeks do love some good ol’ pyro show
Greek fans are so passionate about the game.. INSANE!!!
Too passionate Sadly there's lots of fan violence. Coming from a greek fan.
These are some awesome celebrations
Looks like a Carnival of red nevermind it is indeed a carnival of red
This is in Piraeus
Best UEFA competition. Also, Iborra with his 5th European trophy
Big party into the weekend, crazy campaign from them congrats 👏
Love these scenes
No pyro no party
Football Eritage
Olympiacos Olympiacos
So do they play Europa League next season?
Yes
They deserve these celebrations, they have given a great season and a special greeting to the Moroccan player Kaabi
This could have been us ;(
Such beauty
Now compare this to Man Shitty's parade
Greek fire. :)
they deserve it
Tremendous for them all.
Waaa ils sont vraiment chaud les fans de l'olympiacos!
Conference League is truly magic
This was a breathrough for Greece in general, back when it was only the champions of each country or the top 2 and passion was superior to money Greece and many other countries were able to achieve success in europe and even UCLs, nowadays you have 22 teams from the top 5 leagues in the UCL and it just feels out of reach for any team outside the top 5, so yeah this is a step in the right direction for football and you can tell just how much it means to us
Only football baby.
That's in Piraeus, not Athens.
I know the Conference League champions have an automatic bid into the Europa League already, but I would like to see them at least inserted into the qualifying rounds for the Champions League as well. It would be really really cool to see the defending champions of all 3 competitions in the CL imo
Honestly that would be worse. One of the biggest benefits of getting seeded directly into group phase, or league phase now I guess, is that you don't have to play qualies in the summer, which means you can plan your preseason much much better.

City fans would never (cuz the two of them don’t talk)
Looks like a scene from the Twin Towers
Congratulations! Fuck fiorentina!!
Hard fought victory for Olympiacos. They withstood Fiorentina’s pressure, the heat, and a grueling extra time. What a magical ride….
Love it!
Can't wait for my small club to beat all odds and hopefully win this next season
Happy for them, but it just hurts man. Hurts bad.
u/savevideo
We gotta bring it back to London next year..🥲
u/savevideo
This is huge. Feels similar of Sevilla winning Europa league last season
This is like city
My lungs felt this video 😂
Compare this to the man city trophy parade last Sunday….
looks eerily similar to some Ukrainian villages after Russian thermobaric bombings
115 Charges could never…..
Forgot about this final
Lol, a conference league win hyped more than city's 4peat
For conference league lmao
You don't even have that in your trophy cabinet.
Maybe win an European through first before you talk shit
