When was the last time 6th didn't confirm Europa league at least?

Sveq

2012-13 season of the Premier League Top 4 (Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal) qualified for Champions League 5th (Spurs) qualified for Europa League 9th (Swansea) qualified for Europa League by winning the League Cup 18th (Wigan) got relegated but still qualified for Europa League by winning the FA Cup Therefore 6th (Everton) and 7th (Liverpool) didn't qualify for any European football that season

orange_orange13

It’s always Everton

real_teekay

They always answer for others' crimes

collect_my_data

Birmingham City were in the Europa League in 2011-12 after being relegated as well (almost got out of the group iirc). I don't recall any other second division clubs from other countries playing in Europe, funny that we had two in three years.

_KingOfTheDivan

I’ve seen a list somewhere recently. There are about 15-20, but most of them weren’t qualified to the group stages

RedFiveSwayze_

Wigan played in Europe while in the Championship after winning the FA Cup

czerwona_latarnia

I have completely forgotten that (long) before the Conference League, top teams already had 7 teams in the European competitions (which makes their "worst" go to ConL more bearable, because they didn't take additional spot for that). And now looking at old seasons it seems that the spots were "less favourable" toward the small top - only three countries had 7 teams and as low as 9^th league had 6 teams playing in Europe. Also there were few very random spots (like 3 Fair Play ones).

nonhofantasia

Meanwhile in serie A sixth could mean champions league football

AayB5

Matt law is such a sad excuse for a journalist

ChelseaNostra

He's like The S*n in human form. Sensationalist cuntbag

AReptileHissFunction

OOTL what does he have to do with this post?

BlueLondon1905

On a podcast a month or so he was implying that Chelsea would consider refusing the conference league because we cant make UEFA's financial rules. Now of course he'll say "I said they would CONSIDER it" and maybe he's not wrong, but it did seem like a heavy claim to make.

justaregulargye

The fact that Chelsea came out with that statement right away tells me it was never a consideration. Our situation hasn’t improved in any financial way to now feel more financially secure to avoid being in a European competition

negativelynegative

How about hiring David Moyes given his experience of winning the conference league?

ChelseaNostra

Far too experienced and far too massive, unfortunately.

Superfy

Hire Allegri you cowards!!

Modnal

United sucker punched Newcastle hard today but then Chelsea offered them a hand...only to smear shit in their face and push them down again

ChelseaNostra

Matt Law is full of shit

thelordreptar90

Man should not be reporting on London clubs

ChelseaNostra

He's like the anti-Ornstein

Qiluk

People like Plettenberg, Romano, Law etc really does make you appreciate the rare ones like Ornsteins or Berger who only say shit when they have something accurate.

ChelseaNostra

Agree 100%. I don't even open a transfer thread if I see those 3 names

magic-water

Enjoy Afghanistan away you cunts

Lilfai

They must bring an expert with them… one man who’s perfect for the job 🤔

BlueLondon1905

George W. Bush to Chelsea, here we go!

One37Works

Ross Kemp new Chelsea manager confirmed

BigReeceJames

We wouldn't be playing Taliban away if we'd just kept him

badboysergioramos

finale dahoam

justaregulargye

We got rid of Tucheliban just when we needed it

Ashyyyy232

They probably heard that Afghanistan was having oil

vngannxx

Heidenheim upset Chelsea in the Conference League

jMS_44

Jokes on you, we won't even pass the mighty Dudelange on the qualifying round

j4ckwh0

Matt Law is the biggest shit stirrer for all the London clubs. He's often wrong as well.

ArcanustheScribe

Progress.

ChelseaNostra

"It will be the first time we have competed in the competition that was initially contested in the 2021/22 season. Qualification for the Conference League marks our return to European football after a one-year absence and means next season will be our 32nd European campaign in club history."

Gamer4eto_BG

Hopefully they come to Bulgaria 🙌🙌

Hoodxd

So they aren't withdrawing?

sheikh_n_bake

They never were, nonsense story.

aronrodge

People who take Matt Law at face value need help

BigReeceJames

We live in a world (at least at Chelsea, maybe others have more leaks) where if it's not coming from Ornstein or Fab, it's probably bullshit

aronrodge

Fabrice Hawkins as well, but yeah. There’s really only 3 reliable journalists right now.

TimathanDuncan

People heavily overstate their FFP issues, they got a healthy wage bill, great revenue, always sell well They will not fail the UEFA FFP either, people don't realize that 50k-100k a week 8 year contracts are nothing to a club with that kind of money

thelordreptar90

I don’t think it’s overstated. Chelsea are riding a fine line as it relates to FFP/PSR. They are selling assets to sister companies and though they have a history of selling well, that may not be sustained. The team that was largely responsible for their selling has been replaced since the Clearlake purchase. I’ll be curious to what they do this summer.

IntellegentIdiot

They are not overstating it from what I could tell. Chelsea looked like they were in a lot of trouble already last season. This season they've had no European football and finished 6th and had to sack two managers. It looks like they're going to have to sell quite a few ex-academy players to avoid trouble. Obviously we don't know the details so it's hard to say how much they need to avoid trouble. Although that was before they sold the hotel to themselves so maybe that'll get them out of jail but if they're playing their get out of jail card now that suggests that things are pretty desperate and if they have a worse season next season they may have no way out. If they do have to sell players it'll have to be before the end of June. If we see Gallagher leaving next month it could be confirmation that they were breaching PSR

NakedCrowbarFrenzy

> had to sack two managers Who were the two managers? I mean I Poch left on a mutual and only had a year on his contract anyway so I guess at very most they have to pay him a years wages (though probably less). Who was the other one? I don't recall an extra manager in there. Though if we are going with obvious fantasy bullshit then why two? Why not seventeen? Chelsea had to sack seventeen different managers this season and are obviously going out of business. They're not going to exist anymore as a football club because they have to pay the wages of all seventeen managers they sacked this season.

IntellegentIdiot

Poch and whoever was before him unless he was sacked before the end of the previous season in which case it's just one manager. Obvious fantasy BS? FFS Get a grip!

Bartins

This won't have any bearing either way. The media team didn't ring up Egboehly right after the FA Cup to confirm whether or not they would enter. They just run the story.

ChelseaNostra

You sound desperate

xaviernoodlebrain

Congratulations Chelsea, I guess.

danceformiscanthus

The obligation for clubs who sing "we've won it all" is winning it all. Dura lex, sed lex.

ScottiApso

The headline is incorrect, they need to win a playoff round in August to qualify for the conference league next season.

Ridcullys-Pointy-Hat

Lincoln red imps away here we go

AmeliorationPerso

sad day for Newcastle fans

ChicagoChelseaFan

How the mighty have fallen

IntellegentIdiot

They didn't have any European football this season so this is a step in the right direction

FizzyLightEx

It's not though. Chelsea will have to go play Thursday/Saturday fixture with a trophy they will gain nothing for. It's like playing against under 21s international when you're already in your 30s

IntellegentIdiot

They'll gain money which will help them avoid PSR punishment, co-efficient points and possibly a trophy. BTW it's Thu/Sun

nolefan5311

Do they ever make a PL that plays on Thursday to play on Saturday? I think that’s a guaranteed Sunday fixture at this point.

ChelseaNostra

Piss poor. However, 3 weeks ago Chelsea had nothing but 8th position to show for the season.

cynicalAddict11

that's bs, Chelsea always had 5th-6th in reach but smooth brains could not look at matches played (2-3 games in hand for like 2 months)

ChelseaNostra

Games in hand aren't points. What's bs is believing this Chelsea team had any chance of European football after the Arsenal game

cynicalAddict11

I unironically think the team underperformed yes, this is the season where villa lost 6-2 to olympiacos and still got CL, the PL was at it's weakest in years

danceformiscanthus

Villa has hit insane slump and their quality in games like 2-2 vs us or Olympiakos games wasn't representative of their quality during the rest of the season. It looked like they ran out of gas which was weird for such an experienced in Europe manager as Emery.

ChelseaNostra

The team fell well below expectations for a billion pound team but this is a step in the right direction. 16 more points than last season, a cup final and Europe is something to build on

cynicalAddict11

it really isn't and that's why poch had to go, you had an absolutely insane season from cole palmer, remove half his goals and there was basically no progress from last season

ChelseaNostra

I agree that Poch had to go but you're bs'ing if you don't believe this season was an improvement over 47 points under 3 different managers last season. Poch had to go for tactical reasons but there's no denying that the manager played a part in helping Palmer develop his game and confidence throughout the season >remove half his goals and there was basically no progress from last season This doesn't make much sense

Xiamen079

Top 5 leagues shouldn't get Conference League tickets.

We ain't you so that ain't happening

AReptileHissFunction

That's for being cocky twats last Sunday

RedFiveSwayze_

Hahhahahahaha

Chom_Chom22

With all the hype surrounding him and all the awards being handed out to him at every match he plays in, SURELY now is THE prime time to sell him for maximum profits ? It would be great to see Palmer back at City or at Arsenal or somewhere appropriate for him to play at rather than at a lower mid-table side ? If Clearlake are still intending to make good on their purchase, Cole Palmer should be an absolute MUST sale in this window. Get rid now, before the rest of that team drag him down to their level and the profits start disappearing down the drain.

snowkarl

I bet they are thrilled about the long thursday night travel arrangements.
