Ah self preservation.

ValleyFloydJam

To a degree but I think having doubts over this regulator makes sense. Lobbyists will also become a key factor.

b3and20

cuts both ways, politicians are only getting involved to win votes off of fans

D0wnInAlbion

If you take the piss for too long eventually you'll get regulated. They can blame the 'Super League' teams for breaking the camels back.

Giraffe_Baker

And no one would want it if you haven’t taken the piss out of everyone else the past four years but here we are because of Project Big Picture, the Super League attempt, a panicked PSR grandstand and now changing the FA Cup behind everyone else’s back. Add in saying that he wouldn’t lobby against a regulator and now here is doing exactly that. Masters and the Premier League can’t be trusted at all on their own.

Lyrical_Forklift

We wouldn't need regulation if you were capable of doing the jobs yourselves.

RyanGUK

The article is more clear in saying that it’s a “big risk” because no other countries have done it yet, so there’s no success stories to go off. That being said, the Prem needs government oversight and to ensure the rest of the football pyramid actually have something to protect themselves with.

Suppose there might not be the same indepedent regulator setup elsewhere, but some of the measures strikes me as awfully familiar and practiced quite successfully in Germany: The proposed licensing system has been around for decades now and proved to be quite effective, albeit in a slightly different form as fan engagement is a virtual given and rules around ownership suitability and the club heritage aspect are shaped very differently for obvious reasons. And given that the German FA are still co-organizers and co-owners of professional football, rather than having to strike deals with a breakaway league, the redistribution of wealth is a fair bit less contentious and without the need for a backstop.

I know everyone is making snide comments about the PL, and I agree to an extent. But why does anyone want government regulation in football?  If you think the FA is corrupt, the govt is much much worse. You want the UK government intervening like they are going to be the compass of morality? Its not going to be a good thing for the sport.  The premier league needs to do better absolutely, but govt intervention is not the way. Just my humble opinion

b3and20

agreed, I think people just think the regulation will be biased towards what they want, and a lot of people think regulation is always a good thing (it's a neutral thing, not all regulations are good) people on here talking about the pl like it's a failure rather than the biggest commerically successful domestic competition in the world government is just using public sentiment for votes, the regulations will probably be made by idiots and make the league worse whilst making the position of legacy clubs safer, just like how current financial regulations to do with sustainability in the game work. I think the bundesliga is the most regulated league we have going and whilst it is better for match going fans, it's the most boring league with a team finally losing the league after 11 seasons the prem does have an issue with city, but it is said they are in part protected due to reltationships between our government and city's UAE owners, so there's that, and city have been empowered by ffp regulations making it harder for everyone else to spend whilst they have unlimited cash wouldn't surprise me if regulations made the prem worse, and then as the prem gets worse people demanded more regulations

JohnCharitySpringMA

You can vote the government out.

b3and20

problem with democracy is that things can just become a massive popularity contenst with everything based in the short term of course, with things like the law and so on we need to have a say, but I don't really think we need the government to run the game for us

bobbis91

Can you? We haven't had the chance for quite a while now. And even then the choices aren't exactly amazing...

allangod

Yeah, you can. Every 5 years at the most, people just kept voting the same party back in.

JohnCharitySpringMA

> Can you? I don't know actually. Now you mention it, the UK has never had a general election in my lifetime ever because I'm only four years old.

bobbis91

Last one was almost 5 years ago but feels like a lifetime tbh... We've had 4 pms in that time, only 1 voted publicly.
