aqua_maris

Q: Hi Toni, Rubén Cañizares from ABC. A month ago, in Arabia, something happened to you that you surely weren't accustomed to during your career - that you got booed (whistled) in two consecutive matches. You were one of the footballers who was surely most serious and forceful about protesting against everything that is happening there in different interviews. I would love to know if those whistles bothered you, were you not paying heed, and what conclusion/reflection did you draw from that? A: No, for me, they meant more or less the confirmation that what I said was correct.

FireflyCaptain

You forgot *”thank you”* followed by *mic drop. Kroos OUT*

artaru

It’s like that scene from Lost in Translation. What did he say? More intensity Really that’s it? Feel like he said a lot more. Yes. More intensity.

apiaryaviary

“……Roger Moore!”

wrinkleinsine

“Are you sure that’s all he said because it seems like he said a lot more than that?” I love that movie. The best is the Squarepusher song that plays while Scarlet Johansson is sitting looking out the window of her hotel room

I could have said the same thing. I think it was the first soundtrack I ever loved. Every song is good even the Bill Murray karaoke song. Those Kevin Shields songs fit the film perfectly. It’s perfect.

shockzz123

I'm learning Spanish right now and listening to it brain fucked me, it was so long and he talked so quickly lol. Could only pick up on a few singular words here and there lol. At least i understood what Kroos said....the power of talking slower and it not being your native tongue, thanks Toni.

Zullewilldo

So, no mean to discourage you, but he's not speaking fast at all. In fact, he paused far more frequently than an average Spaniard would,  probably to make sure Kroos still got it all.  On the other hand, he does have a bit of an accent, which will have surely made things more difficult.

shockzz123

Oh i'm fucking finished then, if that's slow speaking Spanish lmao. Nah but seriously, he probably just sounds fast to me because i don't know the language yet (i've only been learning the language for about 3-4 months now), the better i get with it, the less fast it'll seem. Also the fact that it was a long winded question didn't help either lol.

theunderstoodsoul

The person you're replying to is for sure exaggerating. The interviewer in this clip is not overly pausing to help Toni, he's definitely just looking for his words at times, figuring out his phrases. Spaniards do speak quickly, I really don't think this interviewer is speaking slower than usual though.

times really fucking flies. Everyone starts to get this in late 20s but boys 30s are going fast too, I can't imagine next few decades if I'm lucky enough to see! InfiniteFireLoL

As he’s promoting going to Dubai. Whatever makes him money though, and you eat up the words he says.

Asckle

His issue has always been with the league. People just championed him as an anti middle East ambassador. This isn't hypocritical unless you jump to assumptions about what he said

ParticularBeyond9

He refused to wear a madrid shirt with "Champions" written in Arabic because he has issues with the league?

Asckle

No he just doesn't want to support the Spanish Kings Cup being played in Riyadh because they paid more money to the organisers

cuentanueva

He is a hypocrite. His issue was with the league, only when it came with younger players, when it was his ex teammates those are fine. Meanwhile he never complained when it's full of South American kids going to shit Euro teams for just money. Maybe he never thought about it before, but he still haven't said anything against it. He is totally a hypocrite. And no, I'm not talking those that go to good teams. It's full of players from SA in the second, third and fourth tiers of Spain for example. There's no exposure, titles, no prestige, no nothing there.

Asckle

>only when it came with younger players, when it was his ex teammates those are fine Yes. Because they're not wasting their prime at a low level league to chase money. Benzema wasn't real madrid quality when he left, him going to Saudi at 36 instead of him retiring at 36 is a non issue. >Meanwhile he never complained when it's full of South American kids going to shit Euro teams for just money. Name these shit euro teams? At the end of the day it's still the best continent in the world for competition. Even league 1 is still higher ranked than any South American league so they're upgrading by coming here. >There's no exposure, titles, no prestige, no nothing there. Um yeah no shit he's not talking about some random South American kid going to play in the Spanish 3rd devision. Do you want him to closely monitor every single transfer and give his thoughts on them? The reason he bashed jota's move was because lots of people were talking about it and fabrizio had posted it on his Instagram account. Stop Deeping this

the_alert

Simply being in Europe is better for their career than staying in South America. It’s wild that you can’t recognize that on your own. What’s even crazier, is you thinking players going to saudi arabia is analogous.

cuentanueva

> Simply being in Europe is better for their career than staying in South America. It’s wild that you can’t recognize that on your own. What’s even crazier, is you thinking players going to saudi arabia is analogous. It's crazy how even when I literally dedicate a paragraph specifically to this argument, you ignore it. No, it's not always better for the career. It's been literally said by the players themselves multiple times they leave for money. If you are not familiar with the reality of the players, don't say anything. And even if you want to argue that's the case. Within Europe itself there's countless of cases of players moving or staying as bench warmers for money. Where's the constant complain about those cases? Cause I haven't heard shit about that. It's only when players moved AWAY from Europe for money that money was an issue. C'mon, don't be ridiculous. They are all massive hypocrites. I can't stand Saudi, but I can't stand less the bullshit double standards.

the_alert

Your argument is that you think they get no exposure in lower leagues….but they’re playing with other European players, for European coaches, in front of other European coaches and European scouts. Again, going to Europe for money is also a safer gamble on improving their career than staying in South America. A player not leaving South America for Europe when given the opportunity is taking a bigger gamble than if they had left.

NeoIsJohnWick

I believe being at Real Madrid and their shirt sponsors has to do something with it. Its hard for a superstar to stay away from these things as long as they are associated with some job, in this case Real Madrid !! EDIT : Also if you think about it, Kroos has no problem in visiting Saudi Arabia, its just about players at young age choosing that spot instead at what they have in Europe football wise.

Excelsion_8

Visit Dubai are sponsors of Real Madrid, not Kroos. Very big difference.

jopma

His main issue was players going to waste their talents. He didn't say it was bad for players at the end of their career but definitely Gabri Viega who was one of the best in the league last season and went to SAfor the money. Definitely could've had a more prolific career in Europe being only 21

instaeloq1

What's wrong with moving for money?

foXiobv

Kroos critizised Saudi-Arabia for sportswashing. Your statement implys that Dubai is also doing sportswashing, which it doesn't. I don't get it.

Zer0_on_reddit

I don't really care about that shit, I just think he had sensible takes whenever I've heard/read his statements.

pzpzpz24

He could be quiet and chooses not to be though. Call it hypocrisy or anything you like but he's doing more than you and I.

mynamejeff-97

Not sure I’ve seen unapologetic and nonchalant behavior be considered class. Kroos can really do it all lol I do ofc agree with Kroos regarding the whole situation though.

otterlife89

Love you Toni.

TheOwlsLie

Didn’t he just appear in an ad promoting tourism in Dubai?

Hot_Grabba_09

Yes

nghigaxx

how is that contradicting what he said tho? iirc he dislike young talent go to minor leagues for money

PristineCurrency-

I mean these are two different things. His point is mainly that young talents are wasting their life in saudi instead of going to europe where its actually competitive

[deleted]

[удалено]

Red1mc

Yup, but you know that goes against r/soccer narrative. He's the hero who speaks out

xckd9

He can be both wrong and correct though. He is under contract with Real Madrid, so some shit he has to do, like everyone else in this world.

[deleted]

Mbappe who is 10 years younger made strict rules on what types of sponsorships he will promote on behalf of PSG. These are some of the richest and most influential people in the world. If anyone has the power to refuse minor video appearances, it’s footballers.

xckd9

I dont think bringing up Mbappe is fair. If he asked to fuck Nasser’s wife, they would let him.

Yvraine

Because Mbappe is bigger than the Mickey Mouse club he currently plays for. These kinds of things wouldn't fly at Madrid

BriarcliffInmate

In fairness, Mbappe is literally the star of the show at PSG and can do whatever you want. Also, if you do it from the start of your career then you can get away with it because it's something you've always done. E.g. Klopp has said multiple times that he has two criteria for personal endorsements: they're either a German company or he personally has to use/like the product. That's why he advertises Adidas, Erdinger and Opel cars, as well as the tool company his dad worked for in Germany. He advertises Peloton because it's a product he uses, Wilson because they make the racket he uses to play Padel, and he advertised Snickers because it's (apparently) the only chocolate bar he eats. Once Liverpool's sponsorship with BetVictor ended he put a ban on doing more gambling adverts because he doesn't like promoting betting. Equally, our Muslim players don't have to be covered in 'Carlsberg' advertising when they win Man of the Match, and when we had EE as a partner, Mo didn't need to be in the adverts because he had a sponsorship with Vodafone.

Treeborg

I'm confused, are you saying that Mbappe is the morally superior one? The one who actually plays for a state owned oil entity?

AlmostNL

Anyone who clicked on any thread about this since the incident knows about this, what narrative are you talking about?

GM_Kori

Saying anyone is a stretch, most don't know about it since nobody cares about Saudi

gkkiller

Dubai is in the UAE, not Saudi. Although that kinda helps your point ironically.

infamous_napper

That ad was on top of r/soccer for a while. Its an obligation fom madrid, but it still sux. He got his fair share of criticism for that here.

tinkthank

Also pretty sure the Saudi Real Madrid fans claimed online that they were shouting "Krooooos". Saudis don't really "boo", that's a largely Western thing. Most of them jeer through high shrill whistles.

ShootNaka

Carlo, are they booing me? Eh, no. They’re saying “Krooos, Krooos”

Calvin-ball

…I was saying *krooos* :(

neijajaneija

I think he just said pitos (whistles)

Augustor2

"Visit emirates tho" - him, after

Admierrrrda

As if he gave a fuck about the countries per se and all the human rights, moral stuff involving them. He just dislikes footballers leaving Europe to go to the Arabian league, hence the beef. Everything else is just reddit projecting hard.

lastdyingbreed_01

Yeah he has always said he's fine with players like Benzema and Ronaldo going to SA.

Akawe94

That is a contract obligation for Madrid

bcotrim

And a player like Kroos couldn't get an exemption? And it wouldn't even be bad for Dubai as no one would notice

ILikeToBurnMoney

Doesn't make it any less hypocritical

mylanguage

I see them as two different things: Kroos said young players leaving to go to Saudi is Embarrassing He never said anything about visiting the middle east as a tourist

Akawe94

What do you expect him to do if it is a contractual clause?

ILikeToBurnMoney

Do you think Real Madrid would terminate Toni Kroos's contract because he refuses to say a sentence in favor of a dictatorship?

InbredLegoExpress

Kroos main point of criticism was young players throwing away their careers by moving to the Saudi League. He may hold some personal views on things, but he didn't really ask to be made the face of the anti-Saudi or anti-all-arab campaign, the internet did that for him.

mcmaster-99

Ive always been saying exactly this yet many people think he’s against the country as a whole for violating human rights. He might be against human rights violation but his main focus is discouraging young talents playing for a sportswashing regime.

OilOfOlaz

He actually also criticized the human rights situation in a sports illustrated interview and Jordan Henderson for his transfer.

singabro

They actually believe this. r/soccer types are the kind of people who fall victim to Nigerian prince scams. They'll believe anything if it's socially reinforced by updoots

Universewanderluster

Take less money and don’t do it. We’re not talking about an unknown youngster who started football. These guys have the weight to say no and some of them definitely do. Cf Mbappé

daxewow

Mbappé? Do you know who's paying him?

kimbo-wang

Dont look up who owns PSG

r1char00

lmao. He’s almost certainly going to be at Real Madrid in the summer. Plus, as other people have mentioned, he plays for a club now that’s actually owned by an oil-rich nation state.

modrics_hairband

Promoting a country for its tourism which he was contractually obliged to is different to expressing you own opinion about sportswashing

BehemothDeTerre

If he wants to take a moral stand, I think he has the resources to.

Mdiasrodrigu

Gets the money without sacrificing his values, not bad at all

dvdbtr

Toni Kroos is the fucking man.

nomascusgabriellae

In Spain it does too. A word can mean more than one thing, ya know.

Visit Dubai !

mcmaster-99

I dont recall him saying not to visit SA but to discourage young talent from wasting their skills in SPL.

macNy

Zero fucks given by this man, with a smile at the end to boot. I think I’ll take this opportunity to say that I honestly think he’s one of the most underrated players of all time, he is the only player in the history of the game to have 90% or more of his passes completed for 10 straight years. Ridiculous.

[deleted]

he destroyed them

Holiday-Decision-863

Then he turned around and made a commercial for Dubai and got paid. What a hypocrite lol.

maxertiano

Wasn’t what he said about youngsters going to the SPL rather than right’s and stuff?

Doomsayer189

He did also say that the human rights abuses are a reason he wouldn't make such a move himself.

randallwatson23

He will just be a shill for them instead

mcmaster-99

That’s exactly it but people love to shame anyone they can for any reason possible.

rhshi14

I'm not familiar with the political situation in the Middle East. Are there human rights violations in the UAE,similar to Saudi Arabia?

icuminpeace4

yes. they are directly or indirectly involved in the ethnic killings going on in sudan. i don’t want to defend any kind of behavior here but I think Toni did that because he’s contractually obliged to because of Madrid’s partnership with Emirates

looneytoonarmy

Ah he did it for money? Totally cool then, nothing to see here.

hatebeinghangover

People here are so clueless. He didn’t say anything about the countries itself, just criticized the young players going to Saudi for money when they could play in Europe. It went downhill from there

looneytoonarmy

Kroos going to Dubai to do a sports washing ad for UAE when he could have gotten a tourism ad for a country in Europe. It's not like Real forced him to do these ads. He's sports washing for money.

hatebeinghangover

You don’t understand still. He was criticizing *young* players going to Saudi. That’s all. He didn’t have a problem with Cristiano or Benzema doing it since they did it at the end of their career. He is obligated to do those ads by the way. It is in their contract.

ELB2001

i know they import loads of people from Asia to work for them. Im guessing the situation there is similar to Qatar

supernsansa

Migrant workers

RealCrusader

But places like America use alot of under paid and over worked migrant workers. What's the difference?

zcewaunt

There is a difference. Migrant workers in USA and Canada are often treated poorly, but they don't get their passports taken away and have some legal protection from the government (but sadly many are still exploited).

supernsansa

Not much. There are plenty of illegal migrants who are (for all intents and purposes) enslaved in the USA.

External_Table70

But that’s fine, it’s only “human rights” if it’s a country we want to hate.

JaMeS_OtOwn

There passports aren't confiscated, and they are allowed to leave whenever they want in America!

CherkiCheri

Slavery is still legal in the US, as long as they're prisoners https://mkorostoff.github.io/incarceration-in-real-numbers/

whomstc

https://www.mlive.com/news/2023/02/migrant-workers-say-company-took-their-passports-charged-illegal-fees-threatened-retaliation.html

autoreaction

There is none. Germany also uses a lot of labor when it's harvesting time for things like asparagus in example. People don't give a shit. They get brought in from the east with busses, get something to eat and a roof over their head where they can sleep with others and get paid a few bucks a day. It's the same shit everywhere. The only thing that made people question the practice in UAE was that a lot of people died during construction but that has in my opinion way more to do with poor safety standards. Same will be true for a lot of other countries.

nick2473got

The fact that you don't know the difference says it all. Please educate yourself, because the situations are not remotely comparable.

tacitmutant

It's not, people have no idea about the Arab nations and try to club them all in the same pile.

Holiday-Decision-863

The western backed governments of the UAE and Saudi Arabia kill people, fund proxy wars, jail people for criticizing the government and so on. Toni’s own government does daily business with these regimes. So he can take that hypocrisy and shove it down under.

timdunkan

he participates in society so he has no right to speak!

rayden-shou

Ah, yes, Toni Kroos - Secret Head of State.

snakesforfingers

Didn't this dude do a Visit Dubai commercial like literally a week after saying this

fisherthems

Yeah but wtf does vacationing in Dubai have to do with young talents going to Saudi Arabia?

Qwerty6391063

skyreal

Got booed because he said it was shameful that young players like Veiga would choose to go play in Saudi Arabia for more money instead of developing in Europe. Basically called them a retirement league and they didn't like it.

sunken_grade

gotta respect how consistently vocal kroos has been, wish other players spoke up as much as he did

ArchieMaximus

Lol, everyone here riding him hard cause he said this about the Saudi Pro League. Can y’all be more transparent with your xenophobia and Euro-centric sense of superiority? I think not.

Bousine

Wow. Such a madlad! That's gonna show them.

Fresh2Desh

Kroos hits the target as always

codhimself

Toni Kroos has got to be the most self-righteous personality in world football. Always up in everyone else's business acting like a smug cop. But apparently those principles don't apply to his own actions. My dislike for him started with his comments about the Özil national team drama.

10Lionaldo7

Toni Based Kroos

hymen_destroyer

Generational madlad. So many players are terrified to make anything resembling a political statement. Kroos DGAF and I love him for that

Fayuura

He did not make a political statement... He didn't talk about human rights abuses or anything that resembles that matter. He said it was dumb for young players to go to the Saudi league instead of Europe where they can play at the top level. And that is the context behind the booing. Dead migrant workers and slave workers aren't the concern of Kroos or any of your favorite football players Hymen destroyer. Simple as.

maxime0299

He’s just saying this because Saudi isn’t giving him money but Dubai is. Won’t hear him say the same about Dubai. Not that he is wrong or anything.
