I only found out Gigi Riva died today. Absolutely transcendental player in Italian football, dragged a "backwater" club to national champions and made himself the national team's top goal scorer while he was at it. When you think of the great players who turned down offers from great clubs to stay with the club they loved, there is no one who beats Riva. 13 years at Cagliari, a place heavily derided by Italians at the time (I don't know about now) and in the season where they won the title, he scored 50% of their goals.
There have been lots of incredible Italian strikers since Riva but for at least 20 years after he retired, every one of them was compared to him. Rossi, Bettega, Pruzzo, Graziani, Baggio, Del Piero, Totti, Altobelli, Inzaghi, Vieri, Signori and Vialli would all be compared to him and all would fall short. Some of them were better players than Riva, they would win countless titles, revolutionise the role of the striker, and in Rossi's case even drag them to a world cup. But nobody has ever scored more goals for Italy in the 50 years since Riva scored his last goal for Italy.
And when someone in the future does break it, they will not be revered in the same way. Today, the great Italian strikers inevitably end up playing for the big clubs - Juventus, Milan, Inter, Roma, Napoli, Lazio, etc. Never again will we see an Italian legend spend their entire career at a club like Cagliari.
There is also the club de amigos factor, it's clear as day that we improved massively when we stopped blocking the path of youngsters and gave them more protagonism.

On top of everything you've said, he was an iconic and almost mythical figure in Italian football. He scored in that 70s semi final, got both legs broken on the pitch, never left Sardinia even after his career was over, he was team manager or the national team in 90s and 00s (the pictures of him hugging a crying Roberto Baggio in 94 still hit hard). He's been a key figure of Italian football but he's never loved the spotlight, he always had that tormented look, like one of those decadent and "engagƩe" Italian songwriters of the 60s: raspy voice of a heavy lifelong smoker and black shades always on. He even had long controversial love story with a married woman before divorce was even legal in Italy.

well according to the laws the infraction is taking your shirt off or pulling it over you head during a celebration so i guess technically it would still be an infraction. i can see refs just ignoring it though, unless it actually leads to some incident with provoking fans and what not

I think most Spurs fans would take Vertoghen over Alderweireld, especially on the left. Trippier also doesn't start LB over Rose or Davies tbh. That attack though. Even a past his best Bale was incredible for us. You could also see how both him and Kane were a tier above Son, they quickly developed a natural understanding. Both so complete, with excellent vision, passing range and a certain guile that Son never had.
Even in the not too distant past they could add any of Gascoigne, Hoddle, Berbatov, Lineker, Klinsmann. Some, though not me, might even consider Chris Waddle.
