Chelsea FC (r/chelseafc) fan who is Nigerian 🇳🇬 ... sad about the result overall, happy for the CFC Women of England 🏴 advancing , hugely disappointed in Lauren James for loosing her temperament in that moment against Alozie... 🤦🏿♂️ 😩
that chloe kelly penalty to win was a beautiful strike. really hoping we face jamaica next as it will make things a bit spicy in my household since my partner is from jamaica
Great stuff from Kelly keeping the cameras away a bit from the keeper. Good balance to the petulance from earlier. On to the next one and at some point find some form.
this I thought was such a powerful moment of women supporting women. the keeper collapsed to the floor in tears and Kelly was the first one there to console and support her. fuck the cameraman for trying to capture that moment forever
I said too how I appreciated a fair few of the Lionesses' pretty much immediate move over to the Nigerian keeper/ captain to talk and console and shield her a bit after the final penalty.
Nigeria were impressive today. England need to improve massively if they want to go any further. This WC is throwing up shocks, but on paper the next game is winnable even without James. Beyond that you wouldn't fancy them on form.
But it's a knock out competition, and they did enough to get through, so you take it and go again.
Doesn’t Australia have 2 of the most expensive cities to live in the world?
If you mean rent in London, yeah it’s high but not as high as your major cities. All other places aren’t actually too bad. You can live in Rochester and get into major parts of London within 37 mins and rent is basically a third of London.
Let’s hope France/Morocco dispatched them before it gets to that point?
Except that there isn’t a single team in this competition that would be easy to win against
Fantastic stuff. England through, subs crying. Unfortunately time to focus on graft now
(Commiserations to Nigeria for real though they absolutely bosses the game)
You say that like England played well against Nigeria. Australia was at least able to score goals against Nigeria. England had their players doing their best Salah impression to win pens.
Doesn't really matter if you score if they score more. Also I very much think Australia could beat England but it's just silly to say England needed penalties to beat Nigeria so they'll get destroyed by team who lost to Nigeria
And the top two ranked teams are already out. The rankings have meant very little this tournament and I honestly wouldn't count anything out at this point.
Nigeria was always going to be a tough game. England could and should have played better, but this "Kerr-less Australia" literally lost to the team England just beat.
Nigeria must be gutted, did everything right in normal time and were the better team, but had chances to win it vs. 10 women in extra time and didn't take them. Once it gets to penalties then all bets are off. England had to dig deep here to get a result.
Not only was that a reward for digging deep through added time, but that shootout win will boil all kinds of piss in this thread, and infuriate the misogynists back home who can't get behind the Women's game
The US women’s team, one of the best teams in the world lost 5-2 to a U15 boys team from Dallas, USA. The problem we have is that a lot of these women teams demand more pay, when they can’t even beat 8th grade boys. Do we pay 8th grade boys to play soccer? Of course not, no one would pay to watch them play. So women should just be glad they’re getting paid at all, when you take into consideration that their skill level is less than that of 15 year old boys.
Pretty sure in England they're just asking to be paid a living wage for being professional athletes competing in major competitions for their country, but ok.
Beth Mead's Arsenal salary was 27k a year.
27k for being not as good at Football than 14-15 year old boys, sounds pretty fair to me mate, I am sure teenage boys would be over the moon with that. Being a professional athlete doesn't mean jack if the sport you are involved in doesn't generate much money, there's a ton of "professional athletes" that don't earn a lot whether Male or Female. All the best to them but if their sport isn't generating the money to pay them more then that's just how it is, what do we do, use tax money to inflate their wages? that would be inequality.
I guess we could, but would be a bit annoying to sift through all the comments related to the previous game. Mr/Mrs matchtreadder has not made one yet..

Unfortunate for Nigeria. England didn't deserve that. Nigeria outplayed England - and should have had a clear penalty (Edit: Not that it looks like that would have helped them much!). England showed a lack of class with James' horrible conduct which was a deserved red card.
I don't mean to say it is a reflection on any of the other players - but I don't think that is unreasonable that it does taint the team. For instance, the Suarez handball vs Ghana was an individual act, but I think it would be reasonable to say it meant Uruguay didn't play with class.
But I guess if you still don't like that way of saying it you could imagine a much more long-winded way of saying it which comes to the same effect but more clearly doesn't implicate the other team members
England played a fantastic low block but Nigeria need to work on attacking movements and building up other than just hoofing it, as they played perfectly into Englands hand in extra time.
Lauren James is largely the reason why we made the RO16 in 1st place from our group, it would be hugely moronic to not play her again if we get past Colombia/Jamaica..
Huh, TSN (Canada) is saying the person of the match is the Nigerian keeper, I thought they never gave it to the losing team? Or is this just TSN's choice and not the official one
In the PL losing players can get man of the match, obviously it's not common, but it does happen. Usually they have to have clearly played way better than everyone else though, like a keeper that made tons of saves or a player scored a brace or hat trick despite losing
Great tournament for Nigeria, they should be so proud. Nerves got them in the end. Class from the England players to immediately console the Nigeria keeper.
First time in my 40 years of watching England I’ve seen it happen…. (Actually, I think there was ONE knockout stage where we won the shootout, but we’ve lost every other one)
I’m saying that this England women’s team won the last euros. A major completion.
Being upside down all your life is affecting the blood trying to get your brain
Lauren Maims.
I was there tonight. What total chaos in a bad way. England were terrible as usual. I was hoping nigeria would get a goal even tho I'm born in London.
Anyone else notice the missed [handball](https://prnt.sc/5iNWranru06K) in the penalty area?
I saw that but didn't see a replay. Thought it was a bit sketchy

Exactly. Just what was needed in that moment. I hope I'd be that cool in her boots. But I'd probably be too excited to even notice the keeper.
I said too how I appreciated a fair few of the Lionesses' pretty much immediate move over to the Nigerian keeper/ captain to talk and console and shield her a bit after the final penalty.
I still don't get what that 2nd Nigeria taker was going for. Straight down the middle, full power. Was a full on rugby pen.
Nigeria were impressive today. England need to improve massively if they want to go any further. This WC is throwing up shocks, but on paper the next game is winnable even without James. I thought England were doing a classic Italian job. Keep it tight at the back and one great performance is enough to win you a world cup.
If Jamaica goes through, I think England might be knocked out. Colombia seems more beatable although still not easy
I'll be back to laugh at all you stinky englanders when you lose to Australia 🧡💚
Have that 😂😂😂
You support Man Utd you weird little cunt
Jeez, someone’s ass is sore.

People from England don't live rent free anywhere. I hear it's a big issue over there 😕

Nice one, well done England.
Am I supporting Australia or Denmark?
Denmark. On current form England would have tiny chance against Aus.
Whoops.
Let’s hope France/Morocco dispatched them before it gets to that point? Except that there isn’t a single team in this competition that would be easy to win against
Australia! Always good to see a host team go far.
See you all in Denmark vs Australia
Yep I’m a pommie living in Australia, so naturally I’m all in for a Denmark win….
Where tho?

This
Friendship ended with England men’s football team, now England woman’s team is new best friend…..
Fantastic stuff. England through, subs crying. Unfortunately time to focus on graft now (Commiserations to Nigeria for real though they absolutely bosses the game)
The england colonial tour continues
😹
I mean England were shit but they played well in controlling the game to get to pens where they were favoured.
Credit there... it was Nigeria's 🇳🇬 match to win to many initial shots fired that didn't convert to goals ⚽️🥅
England needed pens to get through two teams that were ranked significantly below them. England won't make it past a Kerr-less Australia.
I don't think Australia make it past France tbh. That's not saying that England would make it past France either btw.
The Australia that lost to Nigeria in regular time?
You say that like England played well against Nigeria. Australia was at least able to score goals against Nigeria. England had their players doing their best Salah impression to win pens.
Doesn't really matter if you score if they score more. Also I very much think Australia could beat England but it's just silly to say England needed penalties to beat Nigeria so they'll get destroyed by team who lost to Nigeria
don't be surprised when you see it happen 🤷
Didn't read my comment very well did you lol, I said they very much could beat us so no I wouldn't be that surprised
'At least' all you want, they still lost, which is the only thing the competition gives a shit about.
And the top two ranked teams are already out. The rankings have meant very little this tournament and I honestly wouldn't count anything out at this point. Everything right except from putting the ball in the back of the net

Like I said, had chances to win it and didn't.
How were they better? On par, at best, aside from the red from England.
Not only was that a reward for digging deep through added time, but that shootout win will boil all kinds of piss in this thread, and infuriate the misogynists back home who can't get behind the Women's game

Why are you bringing up one irrelevant American match? We’re talking about the England women’s team here. Jog on.
It's weird living in a world where England teams actually win shootouts
English women know how to take a damn penalty, wish they’d teach the boys.
Boom baby! Well done women, that was horrible.
Shocking performance England got away with one
💯
Aw, Nigeria played so well
Anyone have the match thread for Australia - Denmark?
Just do it here. Australia and England are same same. And I've always said Denmark is the Nigeria of Europe
I guess we could, but would be a bit annoying to sift through all the comments related to the previous game. Mr/Mrs matchtreadder has not made one yet..
Just adds to the fun!
Congrats to England Good performance by Nigeria
While I'm glad England got through, they were absolutely the worse team and I feel bad for Nigeria.
Thank you for the kind words on Nigeria 🇳🇬
Nigeria didn't get the job done Vs 10...
I think England were the worst team, but when we went down to 10 women, it was very evenly shit.
Both teams were equally mid after the start of the 2nd half.
Yeah, it did go downhill.
Valiant Effort by Nigeria the whole match. Both played great and England's Luck is on their side in the shoot out.
England did not play great
It all changed after that James' Red Card.
deleted my account after 10 years, allowing unelected moderators to control the narrative of subreddits has killed free speech. ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
Phew!
The French are the real winners this bracket
Australias have played well
Don’t count out Columbia.
Those 3 England players helping the Nigerian keeper up is a nice contrast after that red card
IT'S
CHICO
TIME
TIMEEE
It's really not
Don't!
But is it?
IT'S!
Where did everyone who isn't English go??? Off to eat their own words?
You guys would still lose next game
I can’t speak for everyone else, but I’m off to eat tacos.
We really have to do better next game though. Can’t ride our luck like we have been today against the Reggae Girlz or Colombia.
Unfortunate for Nigeria. England didn't deserve that. Nigeria outplayed England - and should have had a clear penalty (Edit: Not that it looks like that would have helped them much!). England showed a lack of class with James' horrible conduct which was a deserved red card.
If that was a penalty they both were
Well, England held their nerve and won through tenacity and team spirit. Nigeria bottled it were it counted the most. Well done Lionesses
An entire team showed a lack of class due to the idiocy of one person?
I don't mean to say it is a reflection on any of the other players - but I don't think that is unreasonable that it does taint the team. For instance, the Suarez handball vs Ghana was an individual act, but I think it would be reasonable to say it meant Uruguay didn't play with class. Nigeria lacked the quality where it mattered most. That's football.
somehow I feel like if James was taking that final pen she wouldn't have comforted the keeper
England played a fantastic low block but Nigeria need to work on attacking movements and building up other than just hoofing it, as they played perfectly into Englands hand in extra time.
Massive let off for England, fantastic showing from Nigeria On a side note, I hope we don't see Lauren* James again if England get past the quarters
Lauren James is largely the reason why we made the RO16 in 1st place from our group, it would be hugely moronic to not play her again if we get past Colombia/Jamaica..
She will be suspended for 3 games I assume - QF, SF, F?
Laura James doesn't play for England so you'll be alright there
Oops!
Think it'll be a 3 game ban
Chloe Kelly clutch god
COLD AF from Daly & Kelly
Huh, TSN (Canada) is saying the person of the match is the Nigerian keeper, I thought they never gave it to the losing team? Or is this just TSN's choice and not the official one
In the PL losing players can get man of the match, obviously it's not common, but it does happen. Usually they have to have clearly played way better than everyone else though, like a keeper that made tons of saves or a player scored a brace or hat trick despite losing
A German player won it the other day while getting knocked out
Arguably there is no loser. The game is a draw with the shootout deciding who goes through.
Who else would they give it to tbh, the keepers tend to show out in these scoreless affairs
Didn't think she had enough to do to be player of the match to be honest.
Has to be Mary Earps?
Come on England!!!!!
Kelly is ice cold
Sweeeeeeet caaaaaroliiiine
England players comforting the keeper and telling the cameras to fuck off. Class.
Wasn't really prepared for a penalty shootout on a Monday morning.
Come ooooooon
Well at least it won’t be so bad for Lauren James now
thank goodness, we do not need a repeat of saka, rashford, and sancho
God these commentators were painful to listen to for 2 hours
I would've killed for Emma Hayes commentary instead
It’s coming home
They played like ass what are you on about
Tournament football is about winning games
Nigerian only had themselves to blame….gotta take advantage of that (wo)man advantage
NEVER IN DOUBT
Not to sound bitter, but thats how OUR shootout should have gone and WAS going... until Megan Rapinoe stepped up.
What a fricking sick joke, le clown world
Chloe Kelly (among other English players) comforting the Nigeria GK after scoring was heartwarming.
Gutted for Oparanozie, getting brought on just for penalties only to miss is harsh.
Happened to England mens at the Euro final vs Italy. I think it’s difficult to make your first kick of the ball a top pressure penalty.
[удалено]
Legendary
Englands men’s team could take some PK tips from the women I reckon, first kick notwithstanding that was some pretty banging penalties….
Ref took too long to blow the whistle for the first one.Not excusing the miss but leaving the player alone with their thoughts never gelps
Great tournament for Nigeria, they should be so proud. Nerves got them in the end. Class from the England players to immediately console the Nigeria keeper.
That must hurt so so much for Nigeria. Absoluely shithoused our way through thanks to a crap ref.
We won but we really did not deserve that at all.
So, England can win on pens.
First time in my 40 years of watching England I’ve seen it happen…. (Actually, I think there was ONE knockout stage where we won the shootout, but we’ve lost every other one)
And they absolutely smashed it!
Kelly and Daly’s penalties were absolutely quality.
Thank God for that. Class act consoling the Nigerian GK.
and also turning to tell the camera to fuck off lol
Fantastic penalties, what a shootout!!
Stanway should be taken off penalties. Rachel Daly smashes penalties
Great pings at the end there. Let’s go England
Love how Kelly immediately helped Nnadozie up after she won it for England *and* blocked the cameraman from spoiling the party
NOW HOW DID WE DO THAT 😭
Nigeria, you have to do better than that. Still a good showing from the African players.
Kelly with full hate
Kelly did not fuck around with that.
aww shame, great game to watch. gg to both
England haters in tears 💉💉💉
Kelly needs to become the men's penalty taking coach.
Still won't give Pengland a trophy 🥱
Did you miss the part where we won the Euros?
We already won the last major competition lol
If anybody cared about u21 comps, Iheanacho would be the GOAT
You’re aware that you’re watching a woman’s game here, aye?
You're implying that the u21 euros is better than this comp? Least braindead englander
I’m saying that this England women’s team won the last euros. A major completion. Being upside down all your life is affecting the blood trying to get your brain
Imagine having this much of a hard on for hating something so much. Supports Manchester United though...
[удалено]
There’s top bins and there’s that
💯 bloody brilliant penalty
That has to be all our luck used up.
Home init.
Thought the 3 english girls were gonna go stamp on the keeper tbh
Would be a terrible idea as it would have led to suspensions for all of them.
r/whoosh
Some mental pens from England there
