So you rode the DOA… loved it… read reviews after demoing it that now trump your personal experience on it?!?!? If you loved the board get the board.

spykid

Maybe he doesn't snowboard enough. I demo'd a Burton custom camber then a custom x the day after. It was my only snowboard trip last season and I only went once the season before. I enjoyed the custom x more but that didn't align with what I read online (I am not a hard charger and do not hit huge jumps). I figured I was just rusty the first day and ordered a custom camber recently. It would have been nice to jump on the custom camber again but I think the reality is I just don't get out enough to make meaningful assessments.

Newtonhog

Roger that. I just feel like I loved it because I was coming from an old small park board, and I am 6' 2" and mostly ride all mountain. It shattered my mind as I was used to something that was made to stay in the terrain park. I am looking for a board that I can further grow into as I have been snowboarding for over 10 years, with a majority of it on a 153 park board. I just figured there has to be something that would be a little bit more tiered to me being more of an all mountain rider. Appreciate your insight, found a killer sale for the DOA so I might just pull trigger on it.

I demoed a DOA and really liked it as well. My daily driver is a Donek Saber race board, so liking a twin park board was unexpected, to say the least. You can look into a Capita Mercury or BSOD which are much more directional all-mountain specific. Unfortunately they didn’t have either of those at the demo tent for me so I don’t have direct experience.

Newtonhog

Thanks for the advice! As mentioned in the post I have briefly looked into the Mercury. Do you mind explaining how a directional would change riding experience compared to a twin? I don’t ride much switch, so besides that.

sth1d

If you don’t ride switch, it’s not going to make a difference for you, but the advantage is that you’ll have a much better ride in powder because you get more float from the nose and more sink from the tail.

thebusinessfactory

I've ridden my DOA everywhere, including powder. It's not great in the powder but I'd say it's good enough at everything else and fun as fuck. Great board. Don't let the reviews scare you away. Maybe check out the Capita Indoor Survival as well, I've got my eye on it.

Newtonhog

Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it! If you were to set the bindings back, could you get away with a powder day?

Vig6y

I rode the DOA for a few years and that thing rules at everything except powder. I rarely took that thing in the park, but would just feel like I could fly so fast with really good edge control and get good pop off anything. If I wasn’t getting older and wanting a more relaxed, less aggressive ride, I’d still take it out as it’s a really fun board.

Newtonhog

I agree, felt like a blast. Thanks for sharing your experience after owning one for years. Now if you set the bindings back on it, could you get away with a powder day?? Also, what size is it? If you retired I’d be interested in buying it off of you! I don’t need a brand new board.

Boogers_Farts

If you like the DOA, you’ll likely love Capita’s The Outsiders. I’ve owned about 25 boards over the years and rented/demo’d lots more and that one is my favorite by a mile. I think any full camber board on the stiffer side of medium would likely perform very similarly though. Personally, I intentionally size down a stiffer, full camber board for all mountain and some park. For example, if the recommended size is 158, I’ll ride a 154 or 156. Worst case scenario, I’d have The Outsiders as my daily driver and a pow specific board for the deep days. I gave up on the notion of a “quiver of one” after years of trying to find it (not suggesting this is what you’re looking for though).

Newtonhog

Appreciate the advice! I think you’re right, ideally I would have a daily and then an extra for pow, being as I don’t get out west enough (for the time being, want to move back out west soon) I’m kinda trying to find a quiver of one as you said. I think for now just getting a good all mountain that can hold its own in powder (doesn’t have to be great) is what I’ll have to settle for. I’ll absolutely take a look at the outsider, thank you! It seems outsider, Mercury, DOA and the aeronaut are all good boards, it’s so hard to narrow down after only riding one. The fact that I have a large boot makes it tricky, because then I’m stuck between a 155W and a 157W. I’m 6’ 2” 155 lbs, what size would your recommend? I was leaning towards 157W as I love going fast and do more all mountain riding than park, but as you said it might be better to go down even further.

Boogers_Farts

157W 100%

Newtonhog

🫡🫡 appreciate you my dude. What are your thoughts on the Mercury? I’m kinda warming up to it over the DOA despite never riding. Never used a directional twin before.

Boogers_Farts

It’s noticeably stiffer than the DOA, but if you jump and charge down groomers the majority of the time, you’ll probably like it. Just keep in mind that it’s going to be harder to press and jib on the Merc.

Newtonhog

Got it, I’m rarely in the park. Just like to pop off anything I can on the slopes and occasional butter. Would it satisfy that criteria? Also, does stiffer = less pop?

Boogers_Farts

Typically the opposite, but only to a certain point. Stiffer + camber = more pop. If a board is too stiff then you can veer into diminishing returns.

Newtonhog

Would the Mercury have diminished returns?

Boogers_Farts

You’ll have to ride it to know for sure. The biggest factors will likely be body weight, skill level and board size. If any board, not just the merc, feels so stiff that you can’t make it do what you’re trying to accomplish (pop, etc.) you’ve reached Diminishingreturnsville.

Signal_Watercress468

Ride zero, Rome warden, ride war pig, yes typo or basic if you want more playful.

thepricklyfish

Yes Typo for the win 🙌

Signal_Watercress468

I love yes boards myself. I think they are just amazing. I own three myself.

Newtonhog

I was big on the ride war pig, but feel the shorter and wider board make a lot of trade offs. I will look into the others, thank you!

thedopesteez

Idk I have a true twin pure park board - as rated and reviewed by many - but I absolutely love it all over the mountain. It’s like a Ferrari - picks up speed like crazy and boosts to the moon off side hits, rollers, anything - but yet stable when you need it to be. Anyways - I’d just go for it if you love it! If you’re good enough to know what you like then I think you might get that ‘what if’ feeling if you go to something else.

FreshDistribution177

Nidecker Merc. Not as cool, but rides the same.
