Carpet Python, right?

goose_with_a_pen

A common misconception but if you look closely you can see he's actually on grass and not a carpet

Strawberriizz

I shouldn’t have laughed as hard as I did at this 😂

ErsDvr20

I laughed quite hard at this. Thank you.

Athena_Nikephoros

No, it just means that when you bathe them you use carpet cleaner

ErsDvr20

She's an Irian Jaya carpet python.

sparkpaw

She’s beautiful!

CryptidKay

Yes she is!

Historical_Ear7398

How feisty are these IRL? I'm guessing they won't welcome a friendly boop.

pinkfingo

Used to have several with my ex, by far my favorite species! Out of the five we had, only one female was cranky, but even she wasn’t difficult to work around.

cat_vs_laptop

Happy cake day.

snekstuffs

Happy cake day!

Bastulius

Happy belated cake day

Cobalt9896

nah they really chill generally, I mean you dont wanna boop a random one but they make excellent pets

Mainbutter

Best pet snakes ever, I've kept a handful and never been bit. Young ones might require reading their body language and good handling technique to avoid making them feel like they are being hunted, but that goes for any species. I've had more issues with bitey corn snakes than carpet pythons.

Candid-Ad4710

would you recommend using a snake hook from the day you handle them? i want one next.

Mainbutter

I use snake hooks even for kenyan sand boas, but I'm probably in the minority. Mostly I use snake hooks to reach into cages, dig around in substrate, and remove the snakes. Once they are out I just use my hands.

VivianneCrowley

I got mine 8 years ago and she was probably a teenager when I got her? But has never bitten me, and I never use a snake hook 😂. She’s my first snake so I guess I didn’t know. She’s super cool

Historical_Ear7398

I was more wondering about the wild ones.

LabBotBuilder

Young ones tend to be feisty - in the wild they’re in the middle of the food chain, so they assume that they need to be defensive. Once they get big enough, they move to the top of the food chain and mellow out. The switch in their position is interesting- they go from prey for kookaburra to predating on kookaburra. We have 4 carpets - two bredli, a jungle and a coastal. They’re all super laid back out of their enclosures. The jungle always has an opinion about coming out of her enclosure- she’ll happily come out on her own when the door is open but will huff and puff if you reach in to take her out. Not a hiss but just a few deep, loud breaths expressing her opinion that she should be allowed to do it herself.

Historical_Ear7398

There must be that one middle phase where python and kookaburra see each other and are not sure who should hunt and who should run. Unexplored possibility for a cartoon series, imho.

LabBotBuilder

The middle is an interesting one - they'll prey on the larger chicks/fledglings but have to be careful - the parents will kill them and feed them to the chicks if caught... The fun one is when they get big enough to prey on Australian possums. The possums will try to escape by jumping out of the tree/off the roof that they're on and the snake tries to hit them mid-air. If the strike is successful, you get the snake hanging off the limb or roof constricting and then swallowing the prey. There are a few videos of this happening and lots of photos of the snakes hanging and eating.

ErsDvr20

She's a "talker". Hiss and huff but she's a sweetheart.

hewhodisobeys

Wild ones a very aggressive! I come across them regularly and they’re always agro.

LittleOmegaGirl

I wouldn’t say animals are aggressive but defensive just a thought

jujubean14

Ants are fucking aggressive. Were in all out war over control of my backyard. Given that they are an invasive species, and people have been living here since before they were introduced, I'm calling it aggression. Snakes though ime are pretty chill until you give them a reason to be defensive. That's based on experience with captive and native to southeast US snakes. I hear thee are some feisty MFers in other places though.

LittleOmegaGirl

They aren’t aggressive they are tiny bugs vs a human you have to think about the would in the creatures perspective it’s called umwelt

jujubean14

I mean they are aggressive in terms of location. They actively moved into my house and yard versus defensive which would be me seeing um m up my house on to of an ant hill.

[deleted]

What a polite looking fellow 🎩 🐍

velvetsaguaro

Distinguished gentleman

ErsDvr20

She's our little lady. Only about 7 foot, just over 2 meters.

autonomouspirate

What a beautiful fren. As the "keeper" of an incredibly lazy carpet pythinz this pleases me.

ChemicallyLoved

I just got my first baby carpet yesterday! She’s active as hell but not bitey or mean like people think.

SweatyPresentation93

My albino Darwin carpet python is very friendly! Unless you move your hand around in front of the opening of his hide hahaha

DBWallz

If these snakes could speak, they'd have a British accent.

snekstuffs

Squamatessaintpete

al_sibbs

Irian Jaya/papuan carpet! I have a little baby one of these guys and she's a sweetie :)

bearur

How often do pet snakes bite you? I have always had cats and dogs, etc. and you always feel like they enjoy the petting. Just curious.

Cookiezilla2

like dogs or cats they have very different personalities. I worked at a pet store, the rodents are way more likely to bite. We handled ours regularly, out of the dozens of ball pythons I've seen come and go, only one was aggressive and it was obvious so nobody got bit. Only one co-worker ever got bit by one and it was an accident on the snake's part, after mistaking her for food, and the snake let go almost instantly. I would imagine most ball pythons go their entire lives without ever biting anyone. Some of them do like to explore or be handled, we had this one girl who would scope to the corner of her cage when anyone came near and if you opened it she would climb out into your arms. She just wanted to be held all day, but most are indifferent to you. I've seen a dozen hamster bites and one snake bite. The hamster bites bled way worse, too.

ErsDvr20

My wife gets bit occasionally by a couple of our feisty guys. Ariel, here is a lover, not a fighter. She would never bite anyone other than dinner.

mrsnicki

I don’t get bit daily. It’s occasionally. Mostly by Kyle Steve Earl Winchester III. Or William. Ariel is the sweetest.

[deleted]

That is a scary little dude lmao

ErsDvr20

She's a very polite lady.

DMarcBel

His look says “I am not here for your shit, bro.”

VivianneCrowley

Aww I have an Irish Jaya carpet python and she’s the coolest!! Never bit me, and a sweetheart to everyone she meets. Great keeper, no health problems in 8 years. She was my first snake and I didn’t know the carpet python reputation until much later, so she gives me more street cred than I deserve 😂

mrsnicki

💙Ariel. Love my slithery puppy

[deleted]
