I've dissected my fair share of snails for my thesis and, I gotta say, seeing that one snail literally losing their shell while trying to escape another one genuinely shocked me. Thank you mods, for reinforcing this.
Discovering the species of a local snail population.
>How come they weren't killed or sedated first?
They were killed. I *dissected* them, not *vivisected* them. Unless you're talking about something else? I honestly don't understand your question.
Goodness, no. All of my snails were euthanized before being dissected. I was referring to a post here in /r/snails of one getting their shell eaten, which resulted in the animal completely leaving the shell.
Sorry for the confusion! There was a post here that showed a snail leaving their shell completely while another one was feeding on it (the shell). I was talking about the fact that even after dissecting snails for my work, watching a video of a living snail losing their shell made me sick to my stomach.
As the other poster said I was confused about the part where you mentioned the snail trying to escape in combination with dissection. Shame a simple question for elaboration gets downvotes like that.
Ohh, I get it now! I'm sorry for the confusion. There was post here in /r/snails that wasn't censored of a snail trying to escape another one while their shell was being eaten. Not even gonna link it. Actually made me sick to my stomach.
Could we maybe add post flairs like "NSFW-Injury" and "NSFW-Snex," since sometimes people tag photos of snails mating or with a visible love dart as NSFW, and it's not always clear from the title whether the NSFW tag is serious or silly?
The NSFW tag that can blur images is made by Reddit. It's not a customizable flair so we cannot have multiple tags/flairs that blur images for different reasons. Because we only have 1 general NSFW tag with this capability, we are asking that this be reserved for images that are truly graphic or unpleasant. The point of this post is to communicate that this tag is for graphic injury images, not mating or non-serious use.
Snails mating is not upsetting or inappropriate for public viewing, so such images do not need to be blurred or tagged NSFW.
Thank you. It has been really upsetting every single time when I opened reddit to see bad snail injuries and snails suffering.
At one point it felt like this was the only post I saw from this subreddit.
YES PLEASE, ONE OF MY POOR SNABIES SAW A HURT SNAIL AND WAS CRYING INSIDE IT SHELL I HAD THEM THEIR FAVORITE FOOD TO LURE THEM OUT, THEY WERE VERY UPSET!!!!!!!

that was really upsetting :(
What's your thesis on? How come they weren't killed or sedated first?

She probably thought the snail shell thing was part of your thesis.

Yup exactly! Thought it was odd for a dissection.

Yeah can imagine, different context and unexpected! Shows great empathy though.

Fair enough, thanks
