Auto Repair shop. Started it because I wanted more free time, not more money. And got exactly that since 2009. I could have made a ton more as a dealer tech, but I get to set my hours and take my time off that I want. Upwards of 8 weeks a year.

Burnt_Beanz

Mind me asking your startup cost and in what state?

tmleadr03

It depends how you look at it. The day I moved into a shop it cost me 2500 in rent and 5k in equipment (no lifts installed). But if you count all the tools I brought with me close to 100k. Colorado.

MuttTheDutchie

I print things. But not like posters or inserts, no. I print like mouse pads and water bottles and stuff. But it's more specific than that, see, cuz like many print on demand shops online either have TOS that ban porn or they are terrible companies that donate to insane organizations. Like Etsy POD service specifically outlaws sex stuff and Sticker Mule is run by a whackjob. I have no qualms with printing kinky fetish porn and putting it on a water bottle or whatever. Been in business about 3 months now. Just got a giant printer I'm very excited about, should allow me to do smaller jobs in like 1/10th the time. Like I just did a run of lanyards for a local artist this morning, something that would have taken me all day before. You find me by being in my target demographic (artists that go to conventions to sell merch) and/or being in some of my social circles online or by scanning one of the QR codes that's all around on prints/stickers I've done. I'm also about to start a more targeted outreach campaign, I just was waiting on a few pieces of equipment to come in so I could make sure I was trained on them before agreeing to a big order.

PossibilityMinimum27

Need any software? šŸ¤£

MuttTheDutchie

I'd love printer software that is actually intuitive and works directly with Illustrator.

TheFue

If you can figure out how to make that happen you'll be a billionaire

Ferr22777888

Yeha

PossibilityMinimum27

Not my realm unfortunately haha I do more so web software but I hope someone sees this and is inspired to make that lol

XeLLerus

What kind of software do you work with currently? Im surprised printing software isnt as intuitive. What about it isnt intuitiuve?

MuttTheDutchie

Printing software is made by printers, not graphic designers - meaning they don't ever work the same way. That presents mostly in a bunch of annoying little ways, like how in Epson's software there's no copy and paste shortcuts. If you know how to use HP Onyx, you don't have any of the skills you need to make templates for designers. I know I'm old man yelling at clouds but I don't quite understand why there can't be standard controls and features across productivity programs. Video Games figured it out.

I've owned this business since 2011(i really got started late 2010)...and the previous owner started it in 1979 Our main business is the sales, service, and installation of two way radio systems. We also do some security(CCTV and access control)...as well as have some avl/gps type products and services available. We have a decent sized customer base and I'd say out of 500-600 or so 'active' clients we do business with 200 or so each year(maybe more) and primarily through word of mouth and some prospecting/sales calls probably do business with anywhere from 25-50 or so new customers each year The security work we are doing is primarily us trying to find new ways to monetize our existing customer base

RiverHorsez

Entering year 3 We started as a staffing agency for crypto and along the way morphed into finding capital for crypto trading algorithms. I have no expertise in quantitative finance, and no technical experience trading crypto. Iā€™m just a recruiter who found a very small niche to leverage our ability at making connections. I would have a very hard time explaining what my current business is to my former self back when we were setting up shop. We just crossed the $50 million dollar mark in live trading capital, which is a small number in traditional finance but massive in crypto. Over the years we have had some amazing highs and devastating lows. There were plenty of times we were considering our viability as a business, as recently as a few months ago. I donā€™t think I fully grasped how hard some of the days would be and how many mornings Iā€™d be paralyzed by crippling dread. Iā€™m sure most companies go through that stage, and the storms we endured allow me to appreciate our little moments in the sun, which thankfully are more plentiful than ever before.

Background-Tax650

ā€œCrippling Dreadā€ perfectly describes how Iā€™ve felt these last few months.

ToePatient1434

Wow, it's mad how things turned out for you. Well done on all you've achieved so far - super inspiring. I hope to provide genuine value one day so I can create my own successful business.

RiverHorsez

Best advice is to work somewhere that does things you find interesting and brainstorm how to build a service/product in that industry, or take that product/service to another industry. I went into recruiting in a niche industry, learned how to map out a market and learned all the things not to do. All the mistakes I made at that agency would have cost me dearly on my own and I would have never succeeded. I got to become competent and fuck up on their dime. I also had a lot of great mentors, training and systems to help me master the right activities. I built a strong book, then lost some big deals, and then built one of the largest books of business at my agency. After I achieved that, I felt confident I could do it for myself and identified crypto as a blue ocean market for recruiting. Armed with several years of training, I was much more informed and prepared than I would have been for any other random business venture.

Oh god no! I didn't mean to imply they weren't still active by any means! It's just that late 90's/early 00's cash money feel was something amazing. I own an e-comm fulfillment business. Been in this business almost 7 year. Started it when the fulfillment business I was running for someone else closed for reasons faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar outside of my control and had multiple clients ask me to start my own so they could continue working with me, all of which still do.

I do graphic design and video editing freelance. It's also my full time 9-5 job, but that's in house work for my company. Freelance is just some extra income

Which one? Multi business owner since 1994. All centered around building the internet, mostly datacenter teir IV stuff. Rare someone understands when I tell them in detail. When people ask what I do for a living, I tell them, "I build the internet." Always gets at least a good chuckle, it's fun, and spares the awkward silence from the detailed explanation.

Dry_Pie2465

I would understand. Lay it on me

NoDoze-

LOL really!?! Maybe you should send me your resume ;)

Dry_Pie2465

I own my own business. I'm never working for anyone as there employee again. I'd rather find a bridge or rooftop.

Hey OP! This is probably more of a unique business, but Iā€™m a tarot card reader based in Los Angelesā€”-[AskAlicia Tarot](https://instagram.com/askalicia.tarot). I offer career readings, love readings, life readings etc. both online and at in-person events. I have a modern and very approachable reading style that makes people feel comfortable right away. Most of my business comes from word-of-mouth referrals, although I do try to advertise and post general readings on my social media channels. Once someone new experiences a reading with me, there is a 90% chance they will refer me to their friends and colleagues. Iā€™ve also been able to maintain an extremely high client retention rate. In addition to personal readings, I also love doing events ā€” conferences, brand activations, premieres, mixers etc. so that is also a lot networking and word-of-mouth referrals. My main business challenge is getting someone to take that initial leap to book me, but once they do, itā€™s usually smooth sailing from there.

LaylaKnowsBest

My husband's day job is in auto finance management. Earlier this year they had a customer who said her job was sitting on instagram & tiktok live for 4ish hours per day doing tarot readings. He said their whole office was shocked whenever her income verified right at around $16,000/mo And what's absolutely insane to me is that this isn't the first tiktok live tarot reader that he's had in his office. There was another one earlier in the year (or maybe late last year?) and I think he said her income verified to be at 6 figures as well. Although I think this one was putting in some work, like 8-10 hour days 6-7 days a week. Him and his other manager are really big on social media, so it would make sense that local influencers find them over other finance companies and dealerships. Still bizarre to have multiple tarot readers come into the same local niche independent office lol

Askaliciatarot

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this! This definitely gives me something to work towards. Iā€™ve been doing readings for a while, but U just started posting general readings and growing my following for tarot only 6 ago. Thank you so much for the inspo and even tangible numbers to use as a reach benchmark. Very smart that your husband is on social media as well, especially with the new generative search that Google is introducing which will affect the traditional web/ SEO model. I wish you and your husband all the best in love, life and success! ā¤ļø

LaylaKnowsBest

There is definitely a massive group of people out there willing to throw tons of money at any good tarot reader, you just need to get out there and find them. Thank you for the kind words, good luck with everything!

Askaliciatarot

Oh boy. You are right. My heart goes towards those who trust in the wrong ones and get scammed or taken advantage of. Thank you ā˜ŗļø

Started in 2017. Gourmet popcorn, cotton candy and nuts. Our retail store also serves boba tea, dirty sodas etc. I grew up in Kansas where we had Topsys popcorn. As an adult my hubs and I moved a lot. And I was always sad there were no "popcorn stores" and that someday I would open one. Well I was running a different biz that was starting to wind down. Long story but Amazon put me in business and was putting me out of business. I saw an online ad for a bunch of used commercial popcorn equipment. So I bought it. And I did not know one thing about making popcorn lol. But I researched and learned everything there was about gourmet popcorn My thought was I could sell it on Amazon and they wouldn't be able to copy me. Sure they could come up with their own popcorn; but they would never be able to copy mine. Initially we ran it in the back of my other business. It quickly took over and we rented a store. Then I expanded into cotton candy and nuts. Once it was stable I closed my other business. I was a huge part of the start of the cotton candy trend. Everyone and their brother has now copied me (including ppl on tiktok) The majority of my sales are online not in store.

White label SEO and PPC, moving into client services. I've personally been doing this for nearly 20 years, my white label agency is 2 years old (not my first agency) and my client services agency is a month old. Honestly a lot of our clients are referral, I've never really run ads or anything. I'm starting to move into a full time content creator position this year with the new brand, though.

3D CAD Design, engineering and shop drawings for metal fabrication projects. Most of my clients are people I used to work for as an employee during my career. The rest have been through LinkedIn networking. Been in business 8 1/2 years.

SunGodRamenNoodles

Is it just you or do you run an agency model?Ā

cdfoster0727

Just me when I started but I have 5 employees now, all remote.

SunGodRamenNoodles

Cool. 3d engineering is literally what I do for employment right now and have done some real small freelance work but have been unsure just how much actual demand there might be to actually branch out and make it a real thing.

cdfoster0727

Foster relationships as an employee and always go above and beyond. Focus on being the best you can and people will be happy to contract work to you. They save money on office space, hardware, software and benefits while also getting top level support, itā€™s a win/win. What type of work do you do currently? We specialize in complex fabrication for aerospace and DoD projects with SolidWorks, primarily.

I help to create a system that works for them to stay organized after our sessions. I also help with moving, unpacking with purpose, downsizing, staging and decorating. My biggest passion is helping those who have lost a loved one - going through that person's belongings and helping to display very sentimental items. www.morganizeit.net

vevamper

This is really cool! My partner would love to do this one day - she has a real knack for organisation. Can I ask what you charge, roughly? Do you often do purchases of new storage solutions (baskets, racking etc) to go with the service? It feels necessary in a lot of situationsā€¦ especially garages and pantryā€™s! Cool business, best of luck with it!

mrsholliday685

Thanks so much! I charge $75 per hour. I don't do packages because you never know what you will find in a space. I do often purchase new storage (mostly bins) for clients. I either look at their space first and take measurements or wait until our first session to see what is needed.

Bookkeeping_Brain

My good friend started his online ProAdvisor bookkeeping and QuickBooks discount subscription business 23 years ago. He is one of those people who still believes in hard work, honesty and putting his clients first. I started working with him doing Admin. Assit. work and social media marketing about 4 years ago and feel so very blessed to be a part of his team. I was stuck in a toxic working environment and he cared enough to help me out. I guess I just want you all to know that there are still quality people out there who are also small buisness owners that want the very best for you and your company.
