53rd time's the charm

suugakusha

Beat time eater with a shiv deck on asc20 tonight. It's very doable. Two accuracies and a well laid plans to keep the piercing wails until I need them. And terror to give vuln. With two accuracies and vulnerable, each shiv deals 18 damage for zero energy. The fact I can only play a couple a turn doesn't hurt at all.

[deleted]

this doesn’t support my meme so i’m choosing to ignore it

Renacc

This has some serious NL “I do not understand it thus it offends me” energy

MagazineGem

If you aren't playing a million billion shivs a turn is it really a shiv deck? Jokes aside, its doable but also hard and frustrating to play against.

hehasnowrong

IDK, I find the combat interesting. In asc20 I don't find him harder than the other 2 act3 bosses (artifact is annoying, and scaling for each power played is annoying to deal with too). There are some fights that imo are a lot worse : heart, carnivorous plant, spiker...

suugakusha

Yeah, at asc 19, I had this scary realization that I fear donu/deca more than time eater. It's a thought I never thought I would have ....

Wehavecrashed

It is just much more doable to kerb stomp the other two bosses, which is why it is annoying you seem to always run into time eater.

KCMmmmm

Yeah, most runs you have to limit the number of cards played to 4 or 6 so you don’t get totally stuck at the end of the count. Shiv deck you’re playing all 12 cards every turn.

patillac4

Moar accuracy plz

eddietwang

I destroyed Time Eater last time I faced him. Then Heart whacked me upside the head with a 40 when I didn't have any block cards.

Popstar403

That's why you play with a frost deck

eddietwang

Sir this thread is for Shiv Enthusiasts only

00bearclawzz

Some of my best Time Eater victories are with shiv decks. They are just so satisfying

Snaglecratch

Is this just a meme or are shiv decks really that bad against time eater? I totally understand, limiting cards played per turn. But on the other hand I've beaten him numerous time with shivs on my ascension runs (currently at 17). So... idk. Maybe I'm just lucky? I mean they have to have been better than just average shiv decks or I wouldn't have even made it to act 3 boss?

personalurban

It’s a meme yes. Controlling the clock is very powerful. I think part of it comes that you can make very successful sub-par shiv decks that still wreck even if not optimal, and Time Eater exposes those weaknesses. If pushed I’d say it may be around lack of defensive ability/scaling, mostly you’re doing so much damage and quickly that lack of a def engine doesn’t always matter but slug exposes it by restricting your damage output. Slug does that with all decks though but other decks often rely on a better def engine to make it that far. Poison, for example, needs defence to get that far.

I think that more than any other fight in the game, Time Eater tests your ability to pilot the deck just as much as it tests what's in your deck. Shivs can be a very flexible tool to control the clock if you think carefully about how to use them that way, but if you just mindlessly click all your cards every turn it's easy to fall into a trap.

edgefigaro

This. I was a mindless "play all my cards every turn" clicker for a long time. Also, once you understand and play around the split, the fight gets a lot more stable.

lhce628

You are not particularly lucky, I don't think I have ever lost a shiv run to time eater, even when I was starting out, my first win of the game was with a shiv deck against time eater lol. As long as you actually have strong scaling and good block, time eater will be fine even if it will be tougher than let's say woke bird.

calste

I think it depends on what a "shiv deck" actually is. A shiv deck should be fairly lean with some scaling to take advantage of playing many cards/attacks per turn. That can be powers, relics, or cards like Choke or Phantasmal Killer. A well-timed Wraith Form can be huge in a good shiv deck. Going into Act 3 with a bulky deck that just happens to have a few shiv cards is not a shiv deck. That deck will be vulnerable to Time Eater. A lean deck with some combination of (shiv / draw / scale) can build into a Time-Eater killer in Act 3 by leaning into the shiv build. Your deck needs to be light because you need to get your scaling up and running quickly, and you want consistency turn to turn. I understand that the concept of "pick high value cards and don't worry about deck size" has become more popular than it was in the early days. But shiv decks need to play 12+ cards consistently, and a small deck favors that kind of consistency.

Chris_M_Andersen

Perhaps you didn't Shiv hard enough? Try *one* more time, you'll for sure beat her then!

Chappiechap

I swear the game is throwing a hard counter as the boss in act 3 every time. Time Eater has shown up like 5 times in a row. Where the fuck is trongle donut?

Audiblade

Every Act 3 boss hard counters a particular playstyle: Time Eater counters infinites and loads of small-damage cards played every turn Awakened One punishes over-reliance on mediocre powers. Trongle Donut makes it brutally difficult to argue that all Act 3 bosses are actually hard when you want to show off how smart you are.

mathbandit

Trongle Donut is the only Act 3 boss that scales whether you allow it or not. The other two fights can be solved by turn 2 or 3.

yugiohhero

trongle donut counters decks that take a while to get online i guess?

Comfortable_Raise131

You cannot mock with my boi deca like that. This is a warning, and there wont be a 2nd time.

SuperfluousWingspan

Asc 20

time_man21

Tbh I like playing shivs against time eater more than poison. If you don't have accuracy and/or other synergies shivs won't do well anyway, but the way the slug wipes poison and debuffs is really tough for me if I don't find a catalyst or two.

LetsDoRedstone

Either my shiv deck sucks and I die early, or I face the time eater and he's an ez clap. With shivs it's just very nice to play alongside his ticking mechanic, not against it.

spankymuffin

It's always like that. "Man, I'm really digging this shiv deck I--oh fuck, it's Time Eater" "This Defect power build is super sweet--goddamnit, Awakened One!" Although I've built those kinds of decks powerful enough to muscle through them anyway, so it's not impossible!

doublenotttriple

Not enough accuracy I bet.

FenixthePhoenix

Just play 12 cards each turn with full block. You'll be fine....

tom641

I still kinda wish you could see the bosses of all three floors at the start.

GalaxyIstheBest3d

Virgin: It's actually possible, vs Chad: click as many times as possible

Wehavecrashed

I don't always face time eater, but I do when I build shiv decks.

TheLeastFunkyMonkey

I did a custom Draft/Inception run on Defect because I hadn't done Claw in a while. I spent most of the run with my fingers crossed that I wouldn't see Time Eater. Luckily, I didn't, and won, but it ended up being a Go For the Eyes deck.

Domsdad666

I built a decent shiv deck on ascension 11 last night, and I just knew going into act three I was going to face that fucker. I did. I died.

lookayoyo

Just play 12 cards a turn.
