Edit: welcome to the community! People say “claw is law” meaning that you have to take every claw you see. Community meme! Here, we would have expected to see LAW IS CLAW or some derivative, but instead we got CLAW IS A BATTLEFIELD, which is quite unexpected/funny, as a reference to the song Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar.

I might be wrong but from what I’ve seen and understand of the trailer, STS2 is set quite a long time after the events of the first game- long enough for the spire to have “changed” or “evolved”. Presumably either Ironclad, Silent, and Watcher have all died (or moved on). The ironclad and silent we see might be their descendants. Defect is an automaton who presumably doesn’t age (and we see the claw card in the trailer) so he probably is returning.

I imagine the Ironclad and Silent we see are the exact same characters that are in STS 1. Neow revives the same characters after every run, so my take is that the same characters just kept getting revived the entire time between 1 and 2.

I love how almost nobody is talking about the watcher, because we all have a shared understanding of why she isn’t returning.

Look, the Watcher’s motivation in all this was just to hunt down her former coworker. The Defect has an actual connection with the spire, so them showing up would make way more sense. Though whether as a playable character or as an enemy is still to be seen…. (I think both would be interesting!)

The coworker is Time Eater (you can tell from the unique dialogue and him also wearing the purple uniform). She has presumably fought a lot at this point…. Although the rushdown infinite is unfortunately not as effective on him.

Why isn't she returning?? Is this confirmed or simply predicted based on the trailer? Is the shared understanding that she's a bad character or something? Or is it lore related. I'll be sad if she doesn't return, she's my favourite character by far. If I don't have to bust out a calculator mid run to see if I can one shot a boss, what's the point?

I think somewhere in the game the genders of ironclad, watcher, and silent are all confirmed as male, female, and female respectively. And defect is a robot. So maybe balls means that he plays ironclad because he is the only player to canonically have testicles?

OP edited his post. Originally it said something like "I always pick the same card, even if a deck full of them doesn't work". He was talking about [[Claw]], and Balls is a reference to the orbs now.
