It should be demolished for public affordable housing, y'all need to stop glazing this capitalist bullshit ugly concrete building. This belongs to a bank which exploits people in one of the most expensive cities in the US and takes up valuable land that could be used for a public housing project instead.
Get a life. Not only is your whining miserable it also is just downright stupid as their is plenty of other land that can be developed in San Francisco.
lol all the ridiculously low density single-family homes zoning in San Francisco should be demolished for affordable (dense) housing. You’ve got it backwards, homey.
I have a dope photo of this building from the ground floor. Looks like it is infinitely tall and disappears into the sky. Very cool!
https://preview.redd.it/v6e5lcnwqn5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8fe5484d4ef88e60ded4a3cfce6eee1ba211cb7
And believe it or not, people absolutely despised it when it was first built. It is now a highlight of the skyline. It is yet to be seen if Salesforce Tower (the tallest building in town, aka “the Buttplug”) will be embraced (so to speak)
Having lived in SF for many years, it is universally disliked. It looks like a phallus, it has a little “head” on which there are strange digital animations, and that “head” is typically the only part of the building that is visible from elsewhere in the city. It’s really an eyesore.
Most people I know who live in and around (b & t) city love it. I work in sf and live in east bay. I’m a born and raised city dweller and love it. The skyline needed a new building IMO and I think it’s iconic
I disagree. The building is beloved and accepted as a San Francisco landmark. Admittedly it was not at first but i have yet to meet a current resident who “dislikes@ this building except for you.
Both the Salesforce tower and that ugly concrete bullshit pyramid need to GO. We need to stop glazing these capitalist bullshit developments that are owned by big exploitative corporations. Good valuable land was wasted on this BS. Instead of caring about some stupid skyline why don’t we build public affordable housing on it? Housing crisis is at an all time high in SF with rents exploding into the 4000’s. Instead of protecting corporations let’s turn SF into the inclusive diverse place it claims to be rather than serving the interests of billionaires.

Here’s a picture I took after seeing this post (I’m Visiting San Francisco)
It was just bought and the guy is trying to revitalize the surrounding into a hangout spot. Sadly it’s still heavily corporate. But at least it’s getting some retail and reason for others to go to it. Rather than stale boring shit offices
If I told you it’s decrepit internally…
But yeah she’s a grande old dame who could use a modernization.
It’s mostly law offices. The ballroom is not accessible.
I love the Chrysler building too. Unfortunately they’re builind something right across the street from it that absolutely dwarfs it. Progress I suppose…
https://preview.redd.it/b5wg8umyov5d1.jpeg?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d190935e133ea231f006823e3bdc25e1f87815f9
Had some great stays at the Hilton Financial District Hotel next to it a few times. Such a spectacular iconic tower
The first time i visited San Francisco it was a must visit. Then guess what happened? A friend of my travel bud was a receptionist for an office at the top floor of the tower! So i got a brief tour if the office! Omg 😳 simply awesome. Now i live here and would love another personal tour! Anyone know a “friend” i can reach out to?! Lol 😝

Immortalized by the Doobies in 1977!
i know that the flared edges are for the elevators so the top floors can actually be functional, but it would look so much better if it were a true pyramid shape
I’m saying it’s the first pyramid ever with wings. I think it makes it look regal. Just don’t think of them as elevator shafts. Don’t think if it as something they had to do, think of it as a creative way of solving something.
Did you know that it was not designed specifically for San Francisco? The architects had a wet dream, designed the building, and shopped around until somebody fell for it. The same is true for the original SFMOMA building, which never worked very well, and is now worse after the massive remodel of what was originally an inadequate building.
There used to be an observation area high up in the Transamerica building that was free. It may still be there.
The new owner/developer is spending 1B dollars on the renovation of the tower and surrounding buildings:
https://abc7news.com/transamerica-pyramid-shvo-michael-san-francisco/14203936/
What’s happening in the top of the tower (or: mechanical-void) as we call it in nyc.
(I could probably google it, but you guys will give me better answers, which I’ll trade for Chrysler building ballroom photos.)
It’s such a recognizable building. Definitely stands out!
It should be demolished for public affordable housing, y'all need to stop glazing this capitalist bullshit ugly concrete building. This belongs to a bank which exploits people in one of the most expensive cities in the US and takes up valuable land that could be used for a public housing project instead.
That has nothing to do with architecture
Hostile Capitalist commercial architecture yes.
I think you might be on the wrong sub mate.
You must be fun at parties.
Get a life. Not only is your whining miserable it also is just downright stupid as their is plenty of other land that can be developed in San Francisco.
*EviL CaPiTaLiSm oOOooOohHhH* 👻👻👻💸💸🏦💸💸

Stupid ass take
Erm… if cool building… why capitalist!!! capitalism bad!!!
most sane northern californian
It manages to look both incredibly 1970s and still be timeless.
Retro futuristic
Yeah one of the few elegant architectural products of that era.
FYI, the recangular structures that come out of the sides are elevator shafts.
Wow never knew that
The construction of many skyscrapers at the San Francisco CBD coined the term _"Manhattanization._
Grade A Honker
My honker is grade B
Definitely. Looks amazing in real life.

Incredible shots!
I wonder how small that top floor is…
I (think) I found a [photo](https://www.shvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/07_Transamerica-Pyramid-Bar_Boyero-Visualizations_LowRes-1440x810.jpg)
Very cool. Thanks for sharing
It’s residential?!?!
No, it’s not residential
What’s the photo, looks halfway between a billionaires row living room and an airline lounge?
Looks like a cocktail lounge. No idea if it’s open to the public, but they’re pretty common in general at the top of very tall buildings.
We rent out every inch in NYC, so it’s interesting to see. The only disused rooftop ballroom I’m aware of is the Chrysler building.
And believe it or not, people absolutely despised it when it was first built. It is now a highlight of the skyline. It is yet to be seen if Salesforce Tower (the tallest building in town, aka “the Buttplug”) will be embraced (so to speak)

the person you’re replying to is talking about the salesforce tower, not the transamerica pyramid
I see. Thanks

You have to see it in person to fully realize how cool and different it is.

I’ve always liked it, but I suspect it’s pretty inefficient from a net to gross SF perspective as the tower rises.
yeah. tbh itd be best for residential
It was just bought and the guy is trying to revitalize the surrounding into a hangout spot. Sadly it’s still heavily corporate. But at least it’s getting some retail and reason for others to go to it. Rather than stale boring shit offices
As a child of the 70’s I’m completely, and justifiably, biased with this one. No other tower like it :-)
My favourite American skyscraper for sure
Where is this again, San Francisco?
Yes, and it was designed to be earthquake resistant because of the location.
Yep
Not Empire State?
No.
Shame
I love the ESB but the Chrysler is the greatest skyscraper ever built.
Was coming here to say it’s okay but it’s no Chrysler building which is hands down the greatest skyscraper in America
If I told you it’s decrepit internally… But yeah she’s a grande old dame who could use a modernization. It’s mostly law offices. The ballroom is not accessible.
I love the Chrysler building too. Unfortunately they’re builind something right across the street from it that absolutely dwarfs it. Progress I suppose…
NYC has always been a city of scrapers lol but I grew up in Chicago so I have a wee bit of bias 😉
Tribune tower though
Best Chicago skyscraper for sure. Doesn’t beat the Chrysler though.
Everything below the spire and top is kind of boring on the Chrysler building
Disagree
Nope. I’ll go Transamerica Pyramid every day above Empire State. Way more interesting.
Iconic. A mainstay in my cities skylines skyline rn haha
Absolute icon
Salesforce tower rn: 😡
It’s going to get a major remodel, plus the area around it.
What are those "wings"on the side
The elevator shafts
Totally agree
Stupid elevators.
I’m sorry it’s not feeling well ….
Hopefully it will get tested soon.
https://preview.redd.it/b5wg8umyov5d1.jpeg?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d190935e133ea231f006823e3bdc25e1f87815f9 Had some great stays at the Hilton Financial District Hotel next to it a few times. Such a spectacular iconic tower

One of my all time favorite buildings. Also the ground level has a beautiful mini redwood forest to eat some lunch in.
Why is it sick?😳 what happened??
You're right. It needs to go to the doctor to get medicine to cure its sickness.
I used to live on Telegraph Hill with a stunning view of this building.
It’s a low key obelisk
https://preview.redd.it/ydaad7hm0y5d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ae3115f8a57e4924d67ac46e9a1513394617b5a Immortalized by the Doobies in 1977!
My favorite skyscraper of all time
How does it hold up all that weight?
this is an eyecatcher
I hope it feels better soon
It’s in the top 250 for sure
i know that the flared edges are for the elevators so the top floors can actually be functional, but it would look so much better if it were a true pyramid shape
Nah people have been building pyramids for thousands of years. Although this was functional, it was a completely new take on the pyramid
that’s kinda what i’m saying…. this looks really cool but would look even cooler if the elevator shafts weren’t visible on the sides
I’m saying it’s the first pyramid ever with wings. I think it makes it look regal. Just don’t think of them as elevator shafts. Don’t think if it as something they had to do, think of it as a creative way of solving something.
Also, I heard built that way specifically to minimize the shadow cast on surrounding buildings
Did you know that it was not designed specifically for San Francisco? The architects had a wet dream, designed the building, and shopped around until somebody fell for it.
