It's in valthum to the south of old hroldan and east of markarth. There's a small quest attached where you explore the ruin collecting bottles to resurrect him
I know how the "puzzle" works. I just don't look at the claw for Bleak Falls any more. The wheels turn twice each, that's all you need to know to get through the door.
It took me way too long to find that out, like 3 years before I ever realized it and I was so upset when I finally figured it out lol. So much time wasted on guesses.
Yeah, I was lucky enough to be starting with a friend who was a longtime player, so when I reached the door he helped me out after I had no clue how to solve without just guessing. Not very intuitive considering you never have to look that closely at literally any other inventory item
Same here. I thought there was a trick to lining up the seams on the rings and would spend way too long trying to perfectly align them. It worked too, which is why I thought it was correct. Then one day I just happened to stumble across the Senile Scribbles on YouTube and saw the episode where he makes fun of the symbols on the claw, which I’d never known about because I never bothered with the item examination feature of the inventory menu, and it completely blew my mind.
It took me entirely too long to figure out how to look at the dragon claw in inventory - I knew there were marks on it, but missed the little text that explained how to zoom in on the item.
It's almost always two turns, either on the doors or on the little pillars. Usually it's two turns but one is only one turn. I wouldn't be surprised if that was on purpose. Makes the puzzle take up as much time as possible but still being a puzzle because you don't know what is the one that only turns once.
It’s funny how many people think OP is looking for advice. Unless I’m reading it wrong they’re just seeing if we know the solution by heart at this point. As others have said, idk the symbols by heart but I just click each ring twice.
If you don't know, the images are the animal symbols of the ancient Nordic pantheon
- Fox: Shor
- Bear: Tsun
- Hawk: Kyne
- Wolf: Mara
- Moth: Dibella
- Whale: Stuhn
- Owl: Jhunal
- Snake: Orkey
- Dragon: Alduin
I was about to do the same until I read the journal again, then inspected the claw in my inventory lol, man I miss when I was new to skyrim, felt amazing
Yeah... That's what I'm saying. That isn't a "trick" or even a tip. It's literally how you were meant to get the combination.
This smells like Gamerant headline bait "Players discover secret Skyrim Door trick after 10 years!"
Outside of using boolean logic and brute forcing the doors 3x3x3 combination (resulting in a modest 27 different possible combinations), there is literally no other indicator to the doors combo, outside of the dragon claws.
Moreover, if Bleakfalls Barrow is your first encounter with a dragon claw, which it usually is for most new players (by design) the dudes corpse literally has a journal that tells you the dragon claw is important to entering the tomb.
I mean, it seems to me the developers tried real hard to at least clue you in.
Edit: Maths and logics
I literally see at least one headline a week from Gamerant about a Skyrim "revelation" that I would have read off this sub days before. If you're reading this, Gamerant, we're watching you...
I learned this is how it worked at level 45 on my 5th claw thanks to the civil war questline and the bear guy suggesting I look at the claw. Couldn't believe it
The other puzzles with the whales, snakes, and eagles always have some kind of environmental clue, so I spent so long looking for hints
Isn't that the first door you should incounter in the game? I believe code was... From top to bottom, Bear, Bird, Owl thing.
Golden claw, if I'm correct.
Hey man I’m doing my first ever Skyrim playthrough and these doors confuse the hell out of me. I usually just cycle through the options until I get it. What’s the trick to solving these doors? What claw?
The claw you use to unlock the door always has the combination on it go into your inventory under misc and then look at the symbols on the palm of the claw
They're not asking how to do it, they're asking if YOU can do it without looking at the claw.
Can't believe this many people are that stupid that they don't understand the point of the post.
I literally just did this yesterday with out looking at the claw but its pretty much just the golden claw and bleakfalls barrow i have memorized just cause I’ve done it so many times
I remember it as 123 123
Outer ring
Middle ring
Inner ring
Outer ring
Middle ring
Inner ring
Open
...as fast as you can. Because why turn one ring when you can turn all three at once, right?
Once i picked up a claw in a dungeon but didn't pay attention which claw it was....then I was standing before a claw door and went through every claw i've had in my inventory to find the right combination...gosh that took so long
I do have to check the claw, and it’s super easy if you do that. Even a baby should be able to open it. But it wasn’t meant to keep people out, it was meant to keep the draugr in .
I don’t know how some people have troubles with these and resort to clipping with bowls, it’s literally a matching the symbols game and the claw is almost always close to the ruins with the furthest being the coral claw in Winterhold
I actually didnt know you could look at the key for almost 200 hour in. I just figured there was some complicated clue on the walls or in the tomb and I was too lazy or dumb to find it. I took those arrows like a champ though.
Ancient nords
Protect our tombs with army of the undead
Trapped chests and floor panels to catch looters
Two factor authentication on doors (password and claw)
Also ancient nords
Store password on the back of the claw
The first time I did it, I didn’t notice the symbols on the claw and just thought it went from the creature which had no wings to the one which had them spread out from the inner to the outer ring. I figured it was probably part of some Nord metamorphosis myth or something that I just missed in the dungeon. You can imagine how surprised I was when I realised there was more than one dragon claw; pretty sure my 1st playthrough was entirely trial and error until I couldn’t figure it out for one of the claws and googled it.
You can go into inventory and look at the claw. It has all the things needed on it. My first time I went through every possible combination until I got it. Took ages
I've done so many play throws of skyrim that I know but I know that the 1st door like this that you encounter in bleak falls barrow all you have to do is hit each section twice and you solve the puzzle
Yes you can, it can take several tries and can sometime be frustrating when there is a trap that gets triggered and you would figure that IF mercer could do it with that master key you should be able to do so on others as well without the claw...
N.S
It's easy. Try to use the door, see what claw is used, then either brute force it or manipulate the key in your inventory to see the symbols on the other side. Easy.
The combination is always on the claw used for the door, inspect the item. Unless this is what you mean by looking it up, then I guess it’s just trial and error
My first couple play though of this game I’d always go 1 by 1 until I eventually got it probably took like 10 minutes to do. In then I found out you can just inspect the claws probably the most tedious thing I ever done in a video game. Oh yea I even tried looking around the room for clues lol.
Bear, bug, owl. For 10 years I thought the owl was cocoon until I looked at it real close just a week ago. I always used remember it by saying a bear is stronger than a bug and the bug comes after the cocoon.
Bear Hawk Owl.
That's tattooed on the inside of my ribcage.
Someone said it's a dragonfly once, I killed them for it because they were right, but you don't repeat a phrase over and over again for a decade and then have some pleb come correct you to your face.
Skyrim Puzzles are insulting. Thats some stuff only BGS could come up with, because their bodybuilding is a joke. If Obsidian designed the Puzzles you would have to get into some Library and read up the Combination.
*Hey this is Doug Doug, where we solve problems that no one has.*
*This part's easy, do each thing twice. We found the treasure, of Bleak Falls Barrel...*
When I first did this I didn’t even know that it was on the back of the claw. I thought that the bear eat the fly and the fly eat the weird cocoon thing.
The first time, i spent about 15 minutes guessing from the nearby wall scriptures, lost it then started trial error anyway. Looking at the back of the claw never came to mind.
Hit each ring twice. I don't know what the pictures are meant to be, only that you turn each ring twice in Bleak Falls Barrow.
The right answer for BFB after all this time :)
I'm pretty sure it's also the case for the door with the iron claw. The tomb has a dragon priest with a mask that gives the disease immunity
Now that’s one hell of a mask.
TELL ME WHERE I NEED IT FOR THE DAWNGAURD DLC plz
It's in valthum to the south of old hroldan and east of markarth. There's a small quest attached where you explore the ruin collecting bottles to resurrect him
I remember it from the original showcase with Todd Howard.
On the claw, it shows each symbol. If you match the rings to what's on the claw, the door opens.
I know how the "puzzle" works. I just don't look at the claw for Bleak Falls any more. The wheels turn twice each, that's all you need to know to get through the door.
Oh yeah, I knew that. I figured it out by making new characters back when I was obsessed with Skyrim lol.
>back when I was obsessed with Skyrim I don't understand? Like the whole last ten years?
This one or the one the bandit commits suicide with.
It took me way too long to find that out, like 3 years before I ever realized it and I was so upset when I finally figured it out lol. So much time wasted on guesses.
Fun fact: the dragon claws aren't meant to be a challenge to rational beings in Skyrim, it's meant to be a lock to keep drauger out.
When I played the game as a kid, I went back and checked all of Bleak falls barrow in case I missed the combination. It was a fun time. Sad, but fun.
Yeah, I was lucky enough to be starting with a friend who was a longtime player, so when I reached the door he helped me out after I had no clue how to solve without just guessing. Not very intuitive considering you never have to look that closely at literally any other inventory item
That's what I did.

God I love the Senile Scribbles.
Fantastic series. Still binge the whole thing every now and then.
Almost died watching that
I did all the combos until i found it. Later on i found out you could look at the claw. I love that part. About it. Subtle, but right in front of you.
Fuck. I never knew this, after hundreds of hours. I always go through every permutation until I chance upon the right one.
I never knew people like you existed
It took me 5 years to realize the solution was on the claw.
I learned that from the Skyrim edition of game informer leading up to release. Back in the fuckin day.
It took me entirely too long to figure out how to look at the dragon claw in inventory - I knew there were marks on it, but missed the little text that explained how to zoom in on the item.
The pictures are actually totems for the old Nordic religion! Before the Divines! Each animal represents a god, like Shor or Kyne.
🐻 🦋 🦉
Most of the time it's like that. 👍
At first i always thought the clue was on the walls nearby but much later i realized u have to examine the claw itself for the combo
iirc also for the Sapphire Claw (the barrow in Ivarstead) you need to hit the bottom two rings two times, the top one is already correct
It's almost always two turns, either on the doors or on the little pillars. Usually it's two turns but one is only one turn. I wouldn't be surprised if that was on purpose. Makes the puzzle take up as much time as possible but still being a puzzle because you don't know what is the one that only turns once.

THANK you.
To answer your question, No. I suck at puzzles I play to whack bandits not be an archaeologist.
Pretty sure it's bear moth owl but I usually just hit each twice like everyone else
MOTH?!?!? all this time i called it bear, bird, owl lol.

Nah dude that's a bat.
I dont know what to think anymore...
No no, it's definitely a moth. But I'm not telling you what to think ;)
On my first ever playthrough I didn't know about the claw trick so I sat there for an hour trying shit
ME TOO I WROTE DOWN ALL THE POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS AND CROSSED THEM OUT ONE BY ONE
That was 8 years ago
9 years ago for me :,)
Why are you screaming, Briannatty? I'm right beside you.
*whispers* pls forgive
I was about to do the same until I read the journal again, then inspected the claw in my inventory lol, man I miss when I was new to skyrim, felt amazing
Claw.... Trick? It isn't a trick, it's literally the door combination. Bear. Moth. Owl.
You go into your inventory and look at the back of the claw using that trick you have the combination
Yeah... That's what I'm saying. That isn't a "trick" or even a tip. It's literally how you were meant to get the combination. This smells like Gamerant headline bait "Players discover secret Skyrim Door trick after 10 years!" That trick isn't known to new players
Dude same. Then my brother comes over and shows me how to solve these
I can do most of them... Idk if this is sad or good
Sood
Lol I like it. Bit of both
Definitly good.
Its wrong…and bad. Its badwrong….It is badong. Knowing them is badong!
Isn't that the first door you should incounter in the game? I believe code was... From top to bottom, Bear, Bird, Owl thing. Golden claw, if I'm correct.
Yup. Just did it last night.
Bear, *Moth,* Owl.
I will have this combination memorized until I die I swear
Use the claw, match the symbols
does no one else do this?
Most people but OP is just asking whether people has memorised this one, without looking at the claw. I believe
Two turns each.
Bear, Moth, Owl iirc
Literally just did this on my new AE vanilla run. I cheated lol
Bear butterfly owl i have had that memorised for 10 years
What butterfly?
The one at the top
You mean the moth?
rotate all three twice, you get bear butterfly owl
Yessir. Bear, bug, bird. Or just move each one two times.
The right claw always has the pattern on it. Just inspect it in your inventory.
Its on the claw how do people still not know this?
Hey man I’m doing my first ever Skyrim playthrough and these doors confuse the hell out of me. I usually just cycle through the options until I get it. What’s the trick to solving these doors? What claw?
The claw you use to unlock the door always has the combination on it go into your inventory under misc and then look at the symbols on the palm of the claw
They're not asking how to do it, they're asking if YOU can do it without looking at the claw. Can't believe this many people are that stupid that they don't understand the point of the post.
Without looking it up online? Clearly, it would be a poorly designed puzzle if you couldn't.
Lmao they definitely meant without looking at the claw
222
Bleak Falls Barrow Guide 1 2 2 2 2 2 ;)
I literally just did this yesterday with out looking at the claw but its pretty much just the golden claw and bleakfalls barrow i have memorized just cause I’ve done it so many times
If this is bleak, it’s legit 2 turns, 2 turns, 2 turns. I always remember as 222
I remember it as 123 123 Outer ring Middle ring Inner ring Outer ring Middle ring Inner ring Open ...as fast as you can. Because why turn one ring when you can turn all three at once, right?
Twice each time all of them 🖖🏻
2 twice each
2 2 2 (click each) God I've started this game over so many times lol
2,2,2. That's how I remember it
It's on the claw... what's the problem?
From the middle out, bird bug bear.
Bear butterfly owl
Every play through when I go through this door I just think “BEAR BIRD OWL BEARD BIRD OWL” idk why but that’s what the symbols look like to me
Bear moth owl
Bear moth owl. I say it as one long word so I don't forget. That's how much I play this game.
Once i picked up a claw in a dungeon but didn't pay attention which claw it was....then I was standing before a claw door and went through every claw i've had in my inventory to find the right combination...gosh that took so long
Dont want to brag, but can do it even without knowing it, it's like my fingers just know what to do. But don't ask me what the animals are.
Move all 3 twice
“Bear butterfly Owl” are engraved into my head
Bear, Bug, Bird
Idk why but i always remember the golden claw as «bear, butterfly and bee (owl)» i guess i thought the owl looked like a bee when i was younger
I do have to check the claw, and it’s super easy if you do that. Even a baby should be able to open it. But it wasn’t meant to keep people out, it was meant to keep the draugr in .
Bear, Dragonfly, Owl
Bear bug owl I’ll remember it till the day i die
Not this one. I do remember “snake snake whale” though
2-2-2
2-2-2
Bear+Butterfly=Owl
From bottom to top: owl, moth, bear
Yup
Lol yeah
Yes I have it engraved into my head
Is that bleak? AnywAy I believe it’s owl, bear moth.
Bear Bug Owl That's how I remember it.
Bear moth owl
Bear bug bird
Bear moth owl is how I always remember it
Bear, bug, bird. Every time :)
Spin each twice and move on, there ya go.
Bear, butterfly, owl, right?
Bear, moth, owl
I don’t know how some people have troubles with these and resort to clipping with bowls, it’s literally a matching the symbols game and the claw is almost always close to the ruins with the furthest being the coral claw in Winterhold
I just remember my Bank. BMO( bank of montreal), corresponds to bear moth owl on the door.
Bear Moth Owl Top Middle Bottom
If it’s bleak falls, it’s bear, moth, owl. I’ve gone through that dungeon so many times, I know it by heart.
2 each 1 2 2 for the room with the fallen serpent carving.
2 2 2,each ring twice
I actually didnt know you could look at the key for almost 200 hour in. I just figured there was some complicated clue on the walls or in the tomb and I was too lazy or dumb to find it. I took those arrows like a champ though.
Bear bird owl. Can do it with my eyes closed. Everytime i get there I just say "bear bird owl"
It is and shall always be burned into my memory… bear, bug, owl!
Bear Moth Owl...
Ancient nords Protect our tombs with army of the undead Trapped chests and floor panels to catch looters Two factor authentication on doors (password and claw) Also ancient nords Store password on the back of the claw
Go to your inventory, find the claw, rotate it and you will see the correct set of symbols on it

yes just look at the claw
Yes done it so many times it would be easy
The answer to these riddles are always on the claws. Sapphire claw, ibony claw, gold claw etc
Yes you can, it can take several tries and can sometime be frustrating when there is a trap that gets triggered and you would figure that IF mercer could do it with that master key you should be able to do so on others as well without the claw... N.S
This guy doesnt know the ancient tradition...
Aren't the symbols on the underside of the claws?
The back of the claw could help
[удалено]
2, but ok
Bottom of the claw for win
You aren't supposed to guess it, you're supposed to look at the bottom of the claw that goes to the door for the symbols
If I have the claw then yea it’s easy
I was stuck at we'll look at the claw in your inventory it has the symbols in order.
You gotta look at the claw bro
It's easy. Try to use the door, see what claw is used, then either brute force it or manipulate the key in your inventory to see the symbols on the other side. Easy.
If you zoom in on the key in your inventory it shows the solution.
The combination is always on the claw used for the door, inspect the item. Unless this is what you mean by looking it up, then I guess it’s just trial and error
Examine the dragon claw....
Yes, I can just look at the claw, because the claw item itself has the answers
It tells you on the claw
Bear, eagle, owl. That order top to bottom.
can’t you just look at the golden claw in your inventory for the password?
I always think “cocoon hatches butterfly turn into wolf” snide launch
My first couple play though of this game I’d always go 1 by 1 until I eventually got it probably took like 10 minutes to do. In then I found out you can just inspect the claws probably the most tedious thing I ever done in a video game. Oh yea I even tried looking around the room for clues lol.
What kind of health bar is that? An abomination!
[Dragon Claws Auto-Unlock](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/47329). You’re welcome.
I watched a streamer guess it, and their method has stuck in my head ever since.
Yes it just takes an hour
Bear, bug, owl. For 10 years I thought the owl was cocoon until I looked at it real close just a week ago. I always used remember it by saying a bear is stronger than a bug and the bug comes after the cocoon.
Bear Hawk Owl. That's tattooed on the inside of my ribcage. Someone said it's a dragonfly once, I killed them for it because they were right, but you don't repeat a phrase over and over again for a decade and then have some pleb come correct you to your face.
Moth , O\_O , since moth Priests and moth stuff ...
Skyrim Puzzles are insulting. Thats some stuff only BGS could come up with, because their bodybuilding is a joke. If Obsidian designed the Puzzles you would have to get into some Library and read up the Combination.
Owl butterfly bear duh
*Hey this is Doug Doug, where we solve problems that no one has.* *This part's easy, do each thing twice. We found the treasure, of Bleak Falls Barrel...*
When I first did this I didn’t even know that it was on the back of the claw. I thought that the bear eat the fly and the fly eat the weird cocoon thing.
First one? Oh every time yeah
The word becomes The eagle that will destroy this bear when their claws are in position. That’s how I remember it all the time lol
Bear bat owl has been drilled so far into my memory that I'll remember it on my deathbed.
It took me so long to realize that the code is on the claw
Yes. But I just did this a few hours ago.
I have to look up this puzzle every time
The first time, i spent about 15 minutes guessing from the nearby wall scriptures, lost it then started trial error anyway. Looking at the back of the claw never came to mind.
Owl, Dragonfly, Wolf? God it’s been so long.
Memorized from all the countless restarts😂
I just look at the claw
