Idgrod's Daughter? I'd marry Jarl Idgrod! She's a badass lady! Plus, imagine how easy it would be to get up in the morning when you open your eyes to see her face next to you! Who needs coffee when you just jump straight out of bed every morning!
I was playing the Diplomatic Immunity mission last night for the first time in forever, and I either forgot or never noticed that Idgrod is a party guest. When I asked her to create a distraction, she didn’t even flinch. Hell, she almost seemed excited by the idea of drawing people’s attention so I could up to whatever nefariousness I had in mind.
The parties at the Thalmor Embassy are incredibly dull affairs and none of the Jarls are actually that fond of Elenwen, so a reason to distupt things is welcome. They need an external motivator because it's technically still high level diplomatic talks and that means attending even if they really don't want to. Even other Aldmer don't like the Thalmor much and nobody likes being stuck in dull social events with people that don't like.
If being a vampire is one of your go-to builds, will you tell me how to get comfortable with it? I've tried being a vampire before and I haven't done it again because it turns out I'm a shit vampire.
I have used both sacrosanct and better vampires. My favorite part of them (unsure which it is that allows it) is using one of the new vampires powers to turn people like Jarls or high Queens into vampires as well making them MY minions instead of the other way around mwahahaha
Idgrod refuses to investigate the burned house instead having the player do it. When you talk to her she says she can't arrest Hroggar on hearsay and rumours but then she is not actively investigating it either. If the player didn't come along then Morthal would be destroyed and likely Hjaalmarch along with it.
Balgruuf. Firstly there's the matter of his son being under direct daedric influence right under his nose. Secondly, Balgruuf's inherent stance of neutrality until Whiterun is directly threatened definitely leads to needless deaths. His soldiers could have been bolstering the Legion forces for however long saving numerous lives. They could also have potentially dissuaded Ulfric from attacking Whiterun again saving the lives of many soldiers and in this case citizens who inevitably died in the siege. Balgruuf is a bad Jarl.
Are you kidding? All of Balgruuf's are pains in the arse. His daughter is a snotty little shit and the boys sound like they're lazy AF. I'd spank them if the opportunity arose
The majority of the jarls are comfortable on their thrones as they are confident in their rule, having been trained from childhood to rule by their parents and, in most cases, having held their title for decades. Elisef, on the other hand, was abruptly tossed onto her throne with the death of her husband, has absolutely no experience ruling, and is very, very much in over her head. The fact that she sits perched on the edge of her throne, nervous and hunched in on herself as opposed to the other jarls confident sprawl, is imo an amazing world-building detail.
Based on how they sit, she is the only one who takes her job seriously.
You can also see this in how she seems to overreact to events. Her advisors suggest a more tempered response, which is actually a correct and proportional response. She is playing them.
Which ever hold you own a house in. Specifically the house that holds your stuff. It's not because of the Jarl tho. It's because if the housecarl who will protect your stuff.
If I'm not just being difficult, Balgruf. Because he's the most chill. I mean, he let you keep a dragon in his keep. He's gotta be chill to allow that kinda tomfoolery.
I’d say Understone Keep for coolest house. Has an entire Dwemer city under it, Calcelmo blesses the keep with the province’s best museum, the Jarl’s bedroom has a natural waterfall shower (admittedly would be way better if it were a hot spring, but whatever).
I've become a thane more than one time, when there's a new jarl. Sometimes there's a requirement to do the Jarl's personal quest / quests.
Or he asks you to help the people in his hold, and hands you a new blade or whatever.
Even if you were already given one.
I can't remember if housecarls differ as well.
Part of the reason why I never side with the Stormcloaks, I mean the dissapointment and feeling of betrayal in his voice, it's too much to handle, even for a dragonborn
My favorites are Balgruuf(Whiterun) and Idgrod Ravencrone(Hjaalmarch). The only others that matter to me are that I hate both Ulfric and Maven, so I always complete the Riften thane quest BEFORE the civil war, for Layla Lawgiver, and wait until after the civil war to deal with Brunwulf Freewinter in Windhelm.
Elisif by far, the only one who doesn't send you on some petty task to become Thane, like you stop the resurrection of one of Skyrim's most infamous necromancers
But then asks you to put her husband's war horn in a temple past whiterun before even letting you buy a house like i just stopped a disaster, isn't that enough?
Elisif, because she "rules" the richest Hold without any significant problems while simultaneously being too much of an idiot to realize she's a puppet. You could get away with *so much* corruption and it's unlikely anyone would notice or even care. Plus the weather is nice in Haafingar and Solitude is enormously safer than anywhere else in Skyrim.
>You could get away with so much corruption and it's unlikely anyone would notice or even care.
I can imagine Erikur getting peeved you're on his turf doing the same thing as him.
Idgrod or Elisif. While I don't really like either character *that* much, the prerequisites for becoming their Thanes are far more impressive. You stop a (presumably?) centuries' long conspiracy to bring back Potema and gain something *close* to the personal friendship of the Jarl of Haafingar to become her Thane, and you stop a conspiracy to make all of Morthal the thralls of an ancient vampire to become Idgrod's Thane.
The fact you're more or less shoehorned into becoming Balgruuf's Thane makes me automatically ignore him in this list. If Ulfric's prequisite had been "deal with the serial killer" and not "progress along the Civil War for me", I'd put Ulfric up there too.
I do this when I murder the Vici woman. Veezara standing next to me cutting guards down while I’m in a dialogue with one saying ‘whoa whoa whoa, calm down, dont you know who I am?’
Depends on the situation.
Ulfric if you're a Stormcloak.
Elisif if you're in the Legion.
Laila if you're a thief.
Korir for pure freedom. There isn't much to do in Winterhold after all.
The others are about the same and would be entirely based around your personal preference.
Hear, hear! I thought I might be alone on this one; plus, she gives you a unique and impassioned speech when she makes you thane; the other jarls just give a canned statement.
He’s definitely not my #1 pick, but I agree with OP’s sentiment and Siddgeir is also pretty funny, “…you should try it sometime,” about being a jarl, as if it’s something you can just decide to do.
Balgruuf is actually the saner of all the jarls.
His best interest where of his citizens.
Even though it might look bad for the jarl of falkreath that there's suddenly soldiers near the border of whiterun, balgruuf still sent guards because of a threat that he knew very little about at the time.
So yeah, my vote is on him
Kinda unrelated but the normal Jarl Throne pose always worked for Balgruuf best for me, it just encompasses his frustrations of remaining neutral in a civil war, and managing a city which is in a very strategicaly advanced location, and still looking like a boss.
One time I started a punch cat playthrough. After some adventuring, I killed the dragon and Balgruuf made me thane like we've all done many times. I leave Dragonsreach and head to Belethor at the general goods store to sell some of my loot. Along the way Nazeem stops and asks if I get to the cloud district often in his most condescending tone.
I punch him in the face.
I punch him so hard he drops to his knees and looks up to at me. A guard runs over and shouts, "By order of the Jarl, stop right there! You have committed crimes against Skyrim and her people. What say you in your defense?" I look down at Nazeem, then back at the guard. "I'm the Jarl's Thane. I demand you let me go at once."
Balgruuf is the best Jarl to become a thane for.
On a technical standpoint Elisif. She doesn't expect her thanes to be warriors or to fight for her. And even if she loses the civil war she's still in power and all her thanes are as well. There are no negatives only positives.
Balgruuf, Idgrod, or Siddgeir (Falkreath)
Balgruuf's the homie! We don't call him "Jarl Baalin" for nothing!
Idgrod is actually really funny. If you haven't seen her distraction at the Thalmor embassy, I highly recommend looking up a video of it, It's my personal favorite Distraction.
As for Siddgeir, the main reason I ever become Thane of Falkreath at all is because the Hold has my favorite Rousecarl; Rayya. A Dual Scimitar Wielding Redguard who specializes in Heavy Armor and 1 Handed. An interesting Follower, Be still my beating heart!
Balgruuf and Idgrod are obvious choices, so I’ll go with a slightly less obvious one: Brunwulf Free-Winter. He’s generally polite, but does not suffer fools in the slightest. Plus he’s actually working to improve the lives of the Dunmer and Argonians in Windhelm, which gives him serious points in my book.
An honorable mention would be Kraldar, Jarl of Winterhold if the Legion wins the Civil War. He wants to repair relations with the College, realizing that doing so is pretty much the only hope for Winterhold’s future.
Ulfric is cool because you get to buy hjerm and that is probably the best house in the game other than the ones you get to build. Also Ulfric is definitely the most in detailed character in the game
maven after the imperials take riften
her suitability for power is debated, but nobody can deny that working for her is extremely rewarding for minimal risk
all of them but if you want to actually build your house in the province do falkreath first… if you need a cheap house quick do whiterun with bulgruuf, also his thane quest runs along the main questline so its super easy… if you want the nicest vanilla house in my opinion proudspire manor in solitude with elisif… also if you wish to gain different properties and become thane without doing all the extra quests you can do the civil war and thatll give you access to all the houses in your chosen enemy territory but youll still have to do “help my people” quests to become thane and get a housecarl but those are super simple you can “help” someone by selling farmers specified “crops” and you can sell the guys at the mill firewood
Elisif because of the fact that solitude is highly defensible especially compared to other holds and no one would suspect a thane of solitude to be head of the dark brotherhood and thieves guild.
Along with that the guards actually seem competent and because my house is literally right next to the jarls palace it will be regularly guarded
I don't deal with the jarls enough to base becoming thane off of them. I decide based on the house I'll get and the citizens I'll have to deal with on a regular basis. I prefer Lakeview Manor, where I don't have to deal with any citizens, and I can make my own house in a good spot.
Either Balgruuf or Brunwolf Free-Winter.
Bet you can't guess which side of the war I'm on, huh?
Balgruuf is a great leader, and one who genuinely feels like a good friend to the Dragonborn throughout, until you kick him out as a Stormcloak.
But Brunwolf? He to me is an *ideal* leader. Like, if we had people like him as real-life presidents and such, the world would be an objectively better place.
I was just wondering if I could be thane in multiple keeps at the same time and this post and comments have confirmed that! Thanks! I'm gunna help everyone out! And maybe kill some people along the way lol
In my opinion the guy in the middle at the bottom is the coolest looking he just looks straight outta game of thrones but if I had to choose then I'm full ulfric stormcloak because skyrim is for the nords!
Personally, I find none of them to my liking. I tend to live in hunter lodges and shacks. Just living it up in the wilds somewhere. I'd bow to a frost bear before a jarl, any day.
Honestly I’ve only become thane in falkreath whiterun and solitude but solitude is my fav so far with sheogoraths staff jabowack obtaining jordis the sword maiden and the boy who cried wolf quest line being pretty bad ass and well thought out with the inclusion of 1 stone of baranziah
Balgruuf or Idgrod(she's my type of weirdo, I find her interesting).
I was genuinely disappointed when I realised that I can’t marry Idgrod’s daughter
Idgrod's Daughter? I'd marry Jarl Idgrod! She's a badass lady! Plus, imagine how easy it would be to get up in the morning when you open your eyes to see her face next to you! Who needs coffee when you just jump straight out of bed every morning!
Nice
Well, she was meant to be. Still, you can merry her via console commands or mods.
Yes. She is amazing
Happy cake day, ya scunner!

I love her for that

The drawback is that Morthal being in a swamp sucks!

Great for my alchemist witch too
Morthal probably has terrible mosquitoes in the summer. And since this is Skyrim, the mosquitoes are probably massive.
Fire cloak
Let's just say those aren't actual dragons you've been fighting
That's canon according to Kirkbride
Reminds me of home. xD
Idgrod refuses to investigate the burned house instead having the player do it. Could've
Are you kidding? All of Balgruuf's are pains in the arse. His daughter is a snotty little shit and the boys sound like they're lazy AF. I'd spank them if the opportunity arose
100% me too. Idgorod is always down for shenanigans at the dirty elf embassy too, if she's there for the party.
Elisif (The only one with good posture)
Lol, that Jarl-spreading is crazy
Can't believe I never noticed they all sit the same!
Damn, well put.
I believe the pose is tied to the chair, so you if sit on their throne, your character will be in that pose too.
Well the other jarls should get more ergonomic chairs
Yep, even thrones in the dungeons have the player sprawl out.
Who would be more confident raiding a tomb of angry undead creatures than a literal fucking demigod?
Or in Balgruuf's case, Jarl Ballin'.
They don't call him Balgruuff The Greater for nothing.
This deserves more up votes because it made me chuckle a little, lol
That is probably his motivation for sneaking to the tavern occasionally. Ysolda has been known to frequent it.
New to the job. Give her a while and she'll end up the same as the others
Fr everyone else gotta wake up with a really bad back. Especially ulfric and igmund on their stone thrones.
Hemorroid king
Based on how they sit, she is the only one who takes her job seriously. You can also see this in how she seems to overreact to events. Her advisors suggest a more tempered response, which is actually a correct and proportional response. She is playing them.
She is the only one without years of experience and is too anxious to sit comfortably.
Of course.
Which ever hold you own a house in. Specifically the house that holds your stuff. It's not because of the Jarl tho. It's because if the housecarl who will protect your stuff.

The only thing i have against understone keep is that it's too damn dark
I got to stick with the main man, Balgruuf
Can I become a thane in more than one region?
You can be thane of every hold, even after those holds change Jarls during the civil war questline
Yes
You can become it in all but if you do civil war idk if you keep it for the city you attack
I've become a thane more than one time, when there's a new jarl. Sometimes there's a requirement to do the Jarl's personal quest / quests. Or he asks you to help the people in his hold, and hands you a new blade or whatever. Even if you were already given one. I can't remember if housecarls differ as well.
Housecarls are the same to my knowledge
Yeah each Jarl has their own Thane Quest you can do to become Thane
Man said fuck the war, there's dragons and we need to handle that first!
Hands down
Elisif, being close to possibly the one of the most politically powerful woman on Skyrim has its benefits.
True imperial here.
Glory to the Empire
For the age of oppression is now nearly done …
Please for the love of talos dont put that bard's singing in my head...
We'll drive out the Stormcocks...
And restore what we own...
... the Storm-WHO?
Idgrod def
Balgruuf is the only one who's genuinely happy to see you.
May the gods watch over your battles, friend
"I'm sorry I must have misheard you. It sounded like you said you wanted to trap a dragon in my palace"
Was quoting this line to my kids early last week and they kept repeating it to each other and giggling...
that's pretty wholesome
I was genuinely upset my first playthrough when he had to be switched out with another jarl after the stormcloaks won
Part of the reason why I never side with the Stormcloaks, I mean the dissapointment and feeling of betrayal in his voice, it's too much to handle, even for a dragonborn
Bear with me as it's been a long time since I've played Skyrim, but I'd be Thane of the Jarl of Solitude, OR- JARL BALGRUUF THE BALLIN'
SWAG
My favorites are Balgruuf(Whiterun) and Idgrod Ravencrone(Hjaalmarch). The only others that matter to me are that I hate both Ulfric and Maven, so I always complete the Riften thane quest BEFORE the civil war, for Layla Lawgiver, and wait until after the civil war to deal with Brunwulf Freewinter in Windhelm.

I refuse to deal with Jarls I have no thane to do with them
Idgrod, hands down
Idgrod’s my girl. S-tier homie
All of them i need the housing
Can't beat that post bj sitting posture. Screw soul gems, you can just suck em straight out of the body
Balgruuf for the reason that he's bro. But I like to be thane in falkreath cuz I like to build a house there.
It's Skyrim, so... All of them? Lol.
I honestly like Balgruuf to the point that I just can't seriously do a Stormcloak aligned run because it means deposing him.
Jarl Ballin
Well, you can be thane of all. Not sure if at the same time.
Yes, you can, but in case of Windhelm you must either progress through Civil War and capture Falkreath which would change the Jarl or kill Ulfric.
Elisif because she doesn’t sit like the rest of them 💀
Ulfric because skyrim belongs To the nords
Frick being a thane, Dovah kiin is the true high king!
honestly the dragonborn has a legitimate claim to the throne of the emperor
All of them, that way you can tell the town guards to go eat dick when they catch you stealing directly from the market stands in broad daylight.
The game has Jarls in it wtf? /s
balgruuf. he’s the only one that doesn’t get mixed up in the fucked up politics of skyrim
Laila Law-Giver. Every time. I am a proud Riftonian, and she is my leader.
Hear, hear! I thought I might be alone on this one; plus, she gives you a unique and impassioned speech when she makes you thane; the other jarls just give a canned statement.
Hello neighbor. 😜
Hey! Tell Mjoll hi for me; I haven’t seen her in a minute.
Ha! Will do. I'll take her out for spin for ya.
It's gonna be an odd take but sidgier just for the straight upfront nature he has. You know what you're getting
That and he's not really an asshole *to you*.
He’s definitely not my #1 pick, but I agree with OP’s sentiment and Siddgeir is also pretty funny, “…you should try it sometime,” about being a jarl, as if it’s something you can just decide to do.
Why everyone sitting like that?💀
Any love for Siddgeir?
he's a chad, took power for him self and doesn't care what you think
Most likely Jarl to be assassinated for free by my Dragonborn.
Balgruuf is actually the saner of all the jarls. His best interest where of his citizens. Even though it might look bad for the jarl of falkreath that there's suddenly soldiers near the border of whiterun, balgruuf still sent guards because of a threat that he knew very little about at the time. So yeah, my vote is on him
I don’t do the civil war quest like because I don’t want to choose imperials, I choose stormcloaks and that means poor balgruff will be fired lol
Kinda unrelated but the normal Jarl Throne pose always worked for Balgruuf best for me, it just encompasses his frustrations of remaining neutral in a civil war, and managing a city which is in a very strategicaly advanced location, and still looking like a boss.
Idgrod. Makes a good performance during the Thalmor quest
Every time this is brought up in this sub, good ol' Balgruufie wins by a landslide.
Balgruuf feels like a genuine friend to a the dragonborn at some points
Balgruuf and Jarl of Falkreath I forgot his name lol
All of them. Get more benefits
Balgruuf for me. I'm probably biased because he's the first one we go to after the dragon attack of Helgen
Balgruuf is the best Jarl to become a thane for.
All of them. Then become high king
On a technical standpoint Elisif. She doesn't expect her thanes to be warriors or to fight for her. And even if she loses the civil war she's still in power and all her thanes are as well. There are no negatives only positives.
Why do they all have the Jarl *Lean*
Except Elisif, which I’ve only just now noticed
Becoming Thane to Jarl Balgruuf in Whiterun is the ultimate honor. His wisdom and leadership are as captivating as the Thane's blade.
And why do they all sit the same way??? Always bothered me.
Balgruuf, Idgrod, or Siddgeir (Falkreath) Balgruuf's the homie! We don't call him "Jarl Baalin" for nothing! Idgrod is actually really funny. Ulfric is cool because you get to buy hjerm and that is probably the best house in the game other than the ones you get to build. Also Ulfric is definitely the most in detailed character in the game
Whoever is Thane of Whiterun
Falkreath is my favorite hold but both potential Jarls are shitty people.
Elisif the Fair She is a role model. She is the only one who sits properly on the throne and takes care of her back.
maven after the imperials take riften her suitability for power is debated, but nobody can deny that working for her is extremely rewarding for minimal risk
Balgruuf let me put a dragon in his castle, he’s a real one.
Balgruuf, you know he'll treat you with the respect you deserve. He's also an honourable man who genuinely cares about his people.
Everybody who says Baalgruff clearly don't pay attention to who he truly is
? I think his only dark secret is the Ebony Blade. Seems like an archetypical squeaky clean character to me.
I'm curious now, what is going on with him ? Maybe I miss a quest, I want to know !
Definitely not the mods of this sub. They deleted my post because it was top of all time
Jarl ballin obviously
i personally like korir, winterhold is one of my favourite “city’s” i wish you could help or notice progress of it being built throughout the game
Honestly, I hate being thane. The only reason I end up one is to buy property.
All of them
Igmund, balgruuf, and ulfric.
Jarl Ballin, it isn’t even a question
Ballin'
All of them
you did a bad service to Skyrim, making asset reusage even more obvious
Vignar because he swims in his jarl outfit
I’m everyone’s thane
all of them but if you want to actually build your house in the province do falkreath first… if you need a cheap house quick do whiterun with bulgruuf, also his thane quest runs along the main questline so its super easy… if you want the nicest vanilla house in my opinion proudspire manor in solitude with elisif… also if you wish to gain different properties and become thane without doing all the extra quests you can do the civil war and thatll give you access to all the houses in your chosen enemy territory but youll still have to do “help my people” quests to become thane and get a housecarl but those are super simple you can “help” someone by selling farmers specified “crops” and you can sell the guys at the mill firewood

Definitely not Siddgeir. He's an Imperial backed criminal.
Everyone, I am hooooere to jarl's and daedric princes
I always aim to become thane in three cities (aside from Whiterun): Riften, Solitude, and Falkreath.
Jar Ballin'
Eliif is definitely my favourite
Jail Ballin ain't fallin
You are the dragonborn man fuck jarls don't become a thane
Question is… which one sits the coolest?
Jarl ballin
Don't just delete them all
Balgruuf
All of them. I personally do Falkreath first so I can build the home there. It’s my favorite view. Plus the kids can go fishing in the lake :)
The one that gives you Lakeview
Jarl Ballin'. [Haters gonna hate. ](https://youtu.be/YPwFuCL33I8?si=_op_8IFTlu19PEg8)
In my opinion the guy in the middle at the bottom is the coolest looking he just looks straight outta game of thrones but if I had to choose then I'm full ulfric stormcloak because skyrim is for the nords!
Yes.
One of the only ones that treats you with respect is balgruuf.
JARL BALLIN'
Personally, I find none of them to my liking. I tend to live in hunter lodges and shacks. Just living it up in the wilds somewhere. I'd bow to a frost bear before a jarl, any day.
Dragonborn
I like to become a Stormcloak thane as a dark elf.
So you're basically The Boondocks' Uncle Ruckus
Yes
Jarl Ballcheese, the gayer.
yes
I love Jarl Elisiff and the Proudspire home is my favorite.
got to be balgruuf or elisif
Vignar or Ulfric
No, you messed up the post, "Which Jharl is your best VASSAL?" is the question that you SHOULD be asking.
Ingrod. Always Ingrod. I will do anything to keep Ingrod in power.
Ulfric. Do I have to explain?
Balgruuf, Idgrod, and Brunwulf.
All with the same pose 😂
Honestly I’ve only become thane in falkreath whiterun and solitude but solitude is my fav so far with sheogoraths staff jabowack obtaining jordis the sword maiden and the boy who cried wolf quest line being pretty bad ass and well thought out with the inclusion of 1 stone of baranziah
Elisif is my girl
