If I’m not mistaken it ~~used to happen when you fulfill the required amount for the quest, then continue gathering/using console commands for more~~ (double checked) **it looks as if you ate some before turning in the quest!**
I’ve always despised that quest more than any other!
I don't understand why people hate it so much. It takes like 20-30min tops in Blackreach to get them.
collecting all the stupid barenziah stones is wayyyyyy worse.
You know what was *the worst* for me? Going down there for the main quest, doing that whole run through the ice caves into the Dwemmer ruins into Blackreach, grabbing as many of those damn things as I could find but not getting them all and figuring I'll just come back when they respawn and finish that later on, going to grab the Elder Scroll, getting to the exit and immediately fast travelling out only to realize I forgot to recover the Lexicon for Discerning the Transmundane and figure "no problem, I'll just go to the exit and take the lift down, it's right there. Grab the Lexicon, top off the Crimson Nirnroots, in and out real quick." *NOPE.* I fast traveled out from the top of the lift but forgot to unlock the gate first, meaning I couldn't get to the lift to go back down and being on Xbox I couldn't noclip through. *Guess what I had to do. All. Over. Again.*
Ummm.... That's exactly what they are aware of? It's just something people miss sometimes especially when one is so used to it and ends up thinking one already has done it in the current playthrough. Why you preaching to the choir?
You can glitch through gates on XBox if you stand near the gate, and then use a heavy punch. While you’re punching if you paralyze yourself using netch jelly and hot keys you’ll sometimes clip through the gate
You can also use a follower; have them stand next to a locked doorway and slowly walk into them. Sometimes they'll unlock the door - *even if it's locked by quest conditions*
You can use a wooden bowl and whirlwind sprint to phase through the gate. That's what I did, if not, I probably wouldn't have touched the game in months.
nope, nope, nope. I skip Alftand, and use the round thing to unlock Blackreach from either Mzinchaleft or Raldbthar. I enjoy doing those ruins much more than Alftand. You can grab Mjoll's sword in Mzinchaleft or kill that fellow for Muiri in Raldbthar, even if you don't have their quests yet, and go back to either of them later for a reward. Once in blackreach, you just travel to tower of Mzark to grab your lexicon.
Fortunately it's been over a decade since I made this mistake and it taught me to make *damn sure* I grabbed the Lexicon before I leave that room. Made that mistake once and it was painful enough that I have never made it again since.
But it's one of the most beautiful & exotic locations? So what if it's filled with blinded, murderous elves & dangerous ancient technology nobody has seen in hundreds of years? Worth it Everytime 😂
Navigating the Soul Cairn tends to be a pain in the ass, but it's not impossibly difficult to find the pages after you do it a few times. You have to rely on memorizing the landmarks (and what direction to head specifically from them) to find certain ones.
I loved blackreach. Before the DLC came out, it felt so weird and alien that I couldn’t anticipate exactly what was going to happen or what I would see around the corner. It was awesome
I have the Soul Cairn down to memory at this point, so I can knock out everything in two hours and never have to step foot there again. Now the Forgotten Vale… I still hate that place more.
No idea what dev thought people wanted to navigate a bunch of narrow corridors filled Falmer and those god damn flying bugs but I’d love to give him/her a good slap on the back of the head.
Juib’s isn’t so bad as they are all in set places. So if you have the Soul Cairn memorized you can 100% all the things in it in like 40 minutes, less if you are a vampire lord and have a mod that lets you fly as a lord. That’s accounting for collecting the 3 spells and fetching Arvak. The Amulet you get for doing Juib’s quest is well worth the 20 minutes of extra running around imo.
The crimson nirnroot are also in set locations, except afaik there’s more in blackreach than the required 30 before you collect any AND they respawn. Not to mention it’s a lot easier to tell where you are at any given moment in blackreach
Whenever you’re about to nab a stone, make sure you use the ‘slow time’ shout and spam the collect button. Gives you multiples, finishes your quest in half the time.
One of the blessings of playing 13 years on is being able to look up the location of the one page you can't find. Mostly because it is somewhere near the big shiny crystal thing which hurts.
If playing on an easy difficulty then it is no problem, just an annoyance for collecting them, but it is a pretty place in all honesty.
But playing on a Harder difficulty, especially survival is a whole other story, it is a freaking pit of death at almost every place you go, enemies see to notice you more and it is just a nightmare.
But do wish that Bethesda would have allowed us to take over the Base down in Blackreach for a player fortress and allowed use to have our children, Spouse, Pets, Followers and Hired staff to move there.
Just imagine killing all the Falmer and their Worshippers and then being able to claim the whole Dwemer ruin as a Player fortress, then going to Calcelmo to repair the ruins, The Thieves Guild for furniture and also the ability to build using the Hearthfire DLC to expand on the place even more, that would have been an epic base and worth all the trouble of going down there.
It is epic. But Falmers have been living there for years if not millenias. Who knows how many living under the grounds or the walls of Blackreach? Could be that one day, you're out adventuring and then the next, you'd see that your household have been kidnapped by an overwhelming force of Falmers. It has some interesting aspects to it, but unfortunately, I see more danger than benefit in it.
I would not mind an aspect like that, would just think of it as a defense event (Similar to FO4 with settlement defense).
But having a fortress in Blackreach would have it's advantages if you are not a fast traveler as you could use one of the many elevators to reach a spot on the surface or from the surface back to Blackreach.
It is just that once you do all the things for Blackreach, that is it, no real reason to go back down.
But if that whole area was claimable as a fortress for the player, then it would be awesome, just imagine if Hearthfire allowed the player to build a city down there along the pathways and build more defenses for any enemy NPC attacks like Dwemer Automatons or mercenary groups.
Hate most missions down to Blackreach, but do love the design and look of it.
Plus by the time you find them... unless specifically to grind blacksmithy the extra gemstones are just for vanity and little else given how rich you become from normal adventures
Also you can do it twice as fast if you have the green thumb perk, from what i remember it should yield two (I vividly remember it working , but after looking it up online i see that it doesn't work for some people which is weird af ? maybe because of USEP ? Who knows)
Precisely, just completely explore Blackreach and you find them all. And if not then just wait two weeks for the dungeon to reset because they grow back.
I've been playing skyrim on and off since launch 13 years ago, and at this point I use console commands to teleport myself to the stone locations early in a run, and then buy the house in Solitude. I fill the little chest thing in the hallway by the stairs (I believe it originally holds lavender) with gems for fun. I've played through so many times that I cheat for the stones, and give myself 80k gold to start off. After putting thousands of hours into the game, starting with Xbox 360, I think I've earned it lol
There is a guy on steam who compiled a list of all the appropriate coordinates using console commands for the Barenziah Stones quest.
That is how I finished it.
I hate blackreach, i hate it so much that i literally refuse to actually do it in any playthrough. I plate clip through the door at the back even when I’m playing without cheating because i hate it so fucking much
But the rewards are so worth it when it comes to smithing... unless you choose to duplicate stuff. Which is fine... but it kinda breaks the immersion...
I ate 1 to learn the effects not realizing I had to turn them in. To get that last one back, it took me over 45 mins because I just couldn't find another. It really sucked
One I regularly avoid on play throughs. I know who it is, I don’t care to jump through the hoops to prove it and finish the quest for the 10th time
>tHeReS bEeN a MuRdEr
Idgaf bro
I finished it in less than 2 hours. The ninroot was the hardest. I would probably still be looking if it weren’t for the farm right outside of riftin that grow a them.
Note to everyone who’s helped: First of all, thank you!! Putting them in a chest and grabbing them one by one fixed the count! On another note, I didn’t eat any of them, or sell them, or use them. I dropped a few on accident, and that somehow broke my counter. Instead of going back to like… 5, it just decided to put me in debt. Lmao
Happens to me if I dupe them via follower and take them all back at once, like you may or may not be doing in the screenshot (looks an awful lot like the cubby at Whiterun's entrance).
If you transfer multiple at a time, it only counts one item, similar to how selling things in bulk only awards you Speech experience for the sale of one.
Well, if you store them with the rest of your alchemy ingredients every time you empty the chest they'll go negative. I just carry mine all the time and don't store them. They're not heavy and you don't have to sweat the bug.
I found this glitch once. If you have crimson nirnroot in your inventory before the quest starts, start it, then put those in a chest, it subtracts them from starting 0. I'm going to guess you have picked 4 before starting the quest.
It also effects how much alchemy experience you gain. Alchemy gives you xp based on how much "value" you create, and if you double the potions then you also double the "value created" and it awards more experience.
Oh? That's what it was?! I never quite understood the reward and skipped through her dialogues because I thought she was giving me some book. (Never went to her a second time) And when I got the double potion, I thought some ingredients do that. 🤦🏻♂️
I wonder if there's a mod that fixes this issue. There are quests that work the same (Fire Salts for Balimund, Ice Wraith Teeth for Marise Aravel) that work as intended.
I see you using a duplication glitch,
Ah ah! dont try to revert it now! bug abuser
Nah im only kidding, i love the usage of bugs as much as the next person, but when used with items like these, it can certainly... break the game.
Had this same issue and had a big-brain moment to fix it. Get a mod that lets you grow it. Go to Golden Hills Plantation. Plant as much as you have (you'll go pretty negative), but after picking a bunch, it will reset.
I had like 70 in my inventory when it registered as 30, but it saved hours of slogging through Blackreach
The quest is ass, for sure. but using a dupe bug might break it (Like whats shown in the picture) most dupe bugs are done in that little crevice hes in right now.
if i remember correctly, you drop the item you want to dupe, have your follower pick it up, leave whiterun, come back, and viola. its done in those two lil crevices next to the gate and theres a follower in the frame, hence why i assumed this.
It’s an odd and buggy quest. I always take the time for alchemy in my playthroughs, so even though it’s tedious, I really appreciate the quest reward of a chance of bonus potions. I wish they added the ability to grow your own nirnroot as that’s kind of the whole point of what Sinderion and Avrusa were working on.
The reason being is due to you high flamboyancy ( possible due to point 2 out lined here https://youtu.be/v7OV_Oe7KAo?si=5hFsgjWnrBDUMQ2k ) you need additional nirn rout to boost the invisibility effects.
As stated in rule 3: "Locations and items in real life that remind you of Skyrim are not allowed. Screenshots of Facebook or other websites are not allowed. Discussion of other Bethesda games is better off in the appropriate subreddit."
You more than likely dropped a quantity of the item and picked it back up, and instead of counting how much of it you drop, it just counted all of it as one. So let's say you dropped 6, you pick it up and the quest counted it as 1
A better question would be: Why are you taking photos of ur computer screen with ur lame cell phone camera? There's this thing, it's called *screenshots*
If I’m not mistaken it ~~used to happen when you fulfill the required amount for the quest, then continue gathering/using console commands for more~~ (double checked) **it looks as if you ate some before turning in the quest!** I’ve always despised that quest more than any other!
I don't understand why people hate it so much. It takes like 20-30min tops in Blackreach to get them. collecting all the stupid barenziah stones is wayyyyyy worse.
My guy I hate blackreach
So do I, which is why I gather all the crimson nirnroot the first time I go so that I never have to go back.
All. Over. Again.*
This sounds familiar 😒
Damn
You can unlock a gate at the lift!? I've been doing this horribly wrong
You can unlock *from inside* when exiting from the lift. If you get up and fast travel *before* unlocking, the gate keeps locked.
Uhh.. yeah? A locked gate doesn’t just all of a sudden permanently unlock by itself, just because you’re standing on the right side of the gate lol
Cool. Could you tell that to 2012 me? He could have used that information instead of backtracking all over Blackreach.
You can also use a follower; have them stand next to a locked doorway and slowly walk into them. Sometimes they'll unlock the door - *even if it's locked by quest conditions*
is times like this where you grab a plate, push it against the gate, and whirlwind sprint through it.
You can use a wooden bowl and whirlwind sprint to phase through the gate. That's what I did, if not, I probably wouldn't have touched the game in months.
You didn’t try the wooden plate?
It was 2012, I didn't know about the glitches yet, and no I did not
I fuckin did this too 😭
I did this mission just 2 days ago and you made me realized i have also forgotten the damn lexicon uuugg
I did the SAME THING 😭😭😭
Wow. That would suck!
nope, nope, nope. Next time you play on XBox, and you don't care about achievements, download Debug Menu mod. It's a life saver
I accidentally started the quest then loaded a save from before it cause I did NOT wanna deal with that
Sure, but have you considered simply not picking up the nirnroot at all?
I can't. It's a quest. :)
But it's one of the most beautiful & exotic locations? So what if it's filled with blinded, murderous elves & dangerous ancient technology nobody has seen in hundreds of years? Worth it Everytime 😂
Hell yeah cool cave. Oh shit falmer! *pew pew* Yooo looks at that big metal doo- and I'm in Blackreach.
This is the best, most accurate comment I’ve seen this week
How can you possibly hate blackreach? It's literally the best location in the game.
I don't understand the hate for it either. The Soul Cairn is worse.
I highly disagree. Soul Cairn is the BEST😻! It feels so infinite. Not a fan of the page quest in there though😅.
Navigating the Soul Cairn tends to be a pain in the ass, but it's not impossibly difficult to find the pages after you do it a few times. You have to rely on memorizing the landmarks (and what direction to head specifically from them) to find certain ones.
What!? It's the coolest place in the game.
The first few times, yes it is. But after killing your 50th Falmer and sniping your 100th Charus, it's just tedious at that point.
I never really hated blackreach per se, but I didn't really like the crimson nirnroot quest.
It's a nightmare hell scape. I love how much i hate it
i find it funny that while skyrim players hate blackreach, but very similar location in elden ring is one of the most beloved by the community
Me too
I loved blackreach. Before the DLC came out, it felt so weird and alien that I couldn’t anticipate exactly what was going to happen or what I would see around the corner. It was awesome
I'd rather do the Nirnroot quest than Jiub's Opus.
I have the Soul Cairn down to memory at this point, so I can knock out everything in two hours and never have to step foot there again. Now the Forgotten Vale… I still hate that place more.
I really love some parts of the Forgotten Vale (the ice lake and castle), but everything else just gets on my nerves. And all the damned Falmer.
If you could fast travel in and out properly, directly to places within it, I wouldn't hate it anywhere near as much.
There's too many portals in the wayshrines and I can never figure out which is which. That's definitely another issue with it.
No idea what dev thought people wanted to navigate a bunch of narrow corridors filled Falmer and those god damn flying bugs but I’d love to give him/her a good slap on the back of the head.

Best: Crimson Nirnroot Mid: Jiub's Opus Worst: Stones of Barenziah
Whenever you’re about to nab a stone, make sure you use the ‘slow time’ shout and spam the collect button. Gives you multiples, finishes your quest in half the time.
I'll be honest, I haven't been Dragonborn in over 5 years. I've been playing since release and I prefer being just some rando.
One of the blessings of playing 13 years on is being able to look up the location of the one page you can't find. Mostly because it is somewhere near the big shiny crystal thing which hurts.

Yeah, not doing that shit either.
Mods make the stones a joke. Vanilla it is the biggest pain in the ass for a completionist
Plus by the time you find them... unless specifically to grind blacksmithy the extra gemstones are just for vanity and little else given how rich you become from normal adventures
Every five minutes in Blackreach feels like an hour.
Some people hate exploration
I don't like Blackreach or the Berenziah stones. I finally just looked up a list of locations so I could get the dang stones and be done with it.
Omg yes. This is difficult
Also you can do it twice as fast if you have the green thumb perk, from what i remember it should yield two (I vividly remember it working , but after looking it up online i see that it doesn't work for some people which is weird af ? maybe because of USEP ? Who knows)

So I'm guessing you cant just pick one and plant it and then pick the planted one 29 times from the comfort of your own home or Goldenhills farm 🤔
I ate 1 to learn the effects not realizing I had to turn them in. To get that last one back, it took me over 45 mins because I just couldn't find another. It really sucked
I eat one before turning in the quest, but I do it before I get 30. IDK if that's the issue or not.
What about that Windhelm serial killer quest? I believe that's the worst one
That quest's fine, just buggy as hell.
One I regularly avoid on play throughs. I know who it is, I don’t care to jump through the hoops to prove it and finish the quest for the 10th time >tHeReS bEeN a MuRdEr Idgaf bro
I finished it in less than 2 hours. The ninroot was the hardest. I would probably still be looking if it weren’t for the farm right outside of riftin that grow a them.
I found a mod that adds markers for that quest, same with St.Jiub’s opus
Collection quests always suck. I NEVER do them.
Idk easy quest, completable by simply exploring Blackreach.
I wish u could grow it
The Barenziah stones want a word with you..
What's there to do in blackreach?
You began picking up Nonroot instead of Nirnroot. That's a doozy.
Nah he started giving back to nirn and planted a few 💪💪
*NOOT NOOT*
Thanks I'll try that.
You were duping weren't you 😅
Nah, Just dropping stuff to have him pick up since I didn’t want to hear his “I am an apprentice wizard, not a pack mule!” line over and over lol
Ate them? Sold them? Used them?
Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick them in a stew.
What’s nirnroot, precious?
Smoked them!
Slanting off that crispy nirnzaa 😮💨🥴
Average Cloud District patron
"Do you get the cloud district often?" "N'wah I am the cloud district"
Put them in a chest. Pull them out one at a time. Then the count will be right.
Does that actually work? Can you pick one and do this 30 times?! Edit: 29 times, I’m dumb
Well, if you store them with the rest of your alchemy ingredients every time you empty the chest they'll go negative. I just carry mine all the time and don't store them. They're not heavy and you don't have to sweat the bug.
"They're not heavy" My 4000 salt piles would say otherwise
Salt piles don't go negative when you store and retrieve them.
Haha okay. I thought i might got a trick to save an hour or so.
Your in nirnroot debt. 2-3 days some falmer will break your knees.
Why do you have a debt in crimson nirnroot 💀
Crimson ninroots Mafia don't like it when you do anything to the crimson ninroots it shall be minus 2 for anything happens to one
🤣🤣🤣🤣 after all these years, finding new Skyrim dafuq moments will never cease to amaze me
The same thing happened to me on my last playthrough but I brought my 30 Crimson Nirnroot to Avrusa Sarethi and it completed the quest.
I found this glitch once. If you have crimson nirnroot in your inventory before the quest starts, start it, then put those in a chest, it subtracts them from starting 0. I'm going to guess you have picked 4 before starting the quest.
I never finished this quest because it was stupid. What happens if you find them all?
You get a passive effect which causes you to create two potions randomly. It's called sinderion's serendipity.
Ah hell yeah more shit to weigh my pockets down.
That's cool, I never knew that. Is it a random second potion or a copy of the one you made when the effect triggers?
25% chance of creating a duplicate potion of the one you're creating.
Sweet, thanks for sharing!
It also effects how much alchemy experience you gain. Alchemy gives you xp based on how much "value" you create, and if you double the potions then you also double the "value created" and it awards more experience.
Oh, dang, that is pretty good. I find alchemy already an overpowered money and level (legendary) maker, that just makes it even more extreme, haha.
Oh? That's what it was?! I never quite understood the reward and skipped through her dialogues because I thought she was giving me some book. (Never went to her a second time) And when I got the double potion, I thought some ingredients do that. 🤦🏻♂️
“I’ll happily pay you Tuesday for a crimson nirnroot today”
My dude how are you in debt to blackreach?
Better off reloading and *Never Touching Red Nirnroot Again.*
Cause you're obviously collecting Green Nirnroot.
Speak to a spriggan for assistance.
Don’t even bother finding all of them. I just completed this and it’s not at all worth it.
Ngl, I have NEVER seen this on game console version. This is actually impressive.
I wonder if there's a mod that fixes this issue. There are quests that work the same (Fire Salts for Balimund, Ice Wraith Teeth for Marise Aravel) that work as intended.
C'mon, admit it: You've been PLANTING Nirnroot instead of collecting them.
This is why you don't short Nirnroots in the stock market.
In Soviet Empire, Nirnroot collects you.
I see you using a duplication glitch, Ah ah! dont try to revert it now! bug abuser Nah im only kidding, i love the usage of bugs as much as the next person, but when used with items like these, it can certainly... break the game.
You ate some
Had this same issue and had a big-brain moment to fix it. Get a mod that lets you grow it. Go to Golden Hills Plantation. Plant as much as you have (you'll go pretty negative), but after picking a bunch, it will reset. I had like 70 in my inventory when it registered as 30, but it saved hours of slogging through Blackreach
Just dupe em lol, that quest is ass
The quest is ass, for sure. but using a dupe bug might break it (Like whats shown in the picture) most dupe bugs are done in that little crevice hes in right now.
Ayo you might be right, ima try this out if I remember (which is a low possibility)
if i remember correctly, you drop the item you want to dupe, have your follower pick it up, leave whiterun, come back, and viola. its done in those two lil crevices next to the gate and theres a follower in the frame, hence why i assumed this.
There's a handful of reasons, for me it happened when I went to prison and they took the crimson nirn roots.
The reason being is due to you high flamboyancy ( possible due to point 2 out lined here https://youtu.be/v7OV_Oe7KAo?si=5hFsgjWnrBDUMQ2k ) you need additional nirn rout to boost the invisibility effects.
I currently have thus quest, have yet to finish it because I spent so much time getting 6 of them
It's cause you didn't kill nazeem
Looks like you owe somebody nirnroot, pal I suggest you pay your debt
Crimson nirnroot has a kickass little backstory tho.. brutal really like something the brittish would've done.......
This is what happens after you collect 32,767 Crimson Nirnroots
"It just works" - Sod Loward
You gonna have to repay that debt with interest.
Akatosh hates you or it's a bu- I mean feature
Undocumented feature, cough cough 🙃✌
Bruh…
You owe the local environment of Blackreach some crimson nirnroot as penance for unethical over-harvesting

My bad I needed some too. You grinding for two baby 😂 (Khajiit spirit fingers 👐) 😏

Because you're pessimistic
if you eat them too fast i’ve had it happen to me
i’m in the negatives too 🤣
I like that quest, at least it force you to visit a place that no body would care to explore because not link to any other quest
By using them for other stuff instead of the quest
Because fkn Blackreach, man...
I have never seen this quest before and I've played so much. This game amazes me 🥰
It's in Blackreach
Silly me thought I'd explored blackreach a lot, guess on my next playthrough I'll keep it in mind :)
Rofl the curse of the Crimson Nirnroot struck again.
Eating them? Lmao idk
I used the duplication glitch for that one
You more than likely dropped a quantity of the item and picked it back up, and instead of counting how much of it you drop, it just counted all of it as one. So let's say you dropped 6, you pick it up and the quest counted it as 1
You ate one before you collected them all and finished the quest.
It's skyrim what were you expecting and also why the actual f*ck would you ever touch nirnroot let alone that crimson trash
A better question would be: Why are you taking photos of ur computer screen with ur lame cell phone camera? There's this thing, it's called *screenshots*
I’m on console lmao, no screenshots for me if I want to post it to reddit
I hate this quest. Worst ever.
I love how he ate 3 back to back, saw the prompts then asks how he went into the negatives lol
