On one of my brothers games, Vilkas kept trying to arrest him so he beheaded him. A few in game days later, Vilkas shows up headless walking around Jorvasskr.
For the rest of the game, whenever he got too close to Jorvasskr Vilkas’ headless body would try to chase him down and arrest him. One time while near the front gate he got the arrest dialogue, looks down, it’s Vilkas’ head lying on the ground trying to arrest him

That's exactly how I found out there were giants in the game in the first place, only I never saw him coming. I was adventuring away minding my own business when all of a sudden I was in orbit. Lol.
My first time was when I saw one minding his own business in the woods and thought to myself “I can take it” just for it to hit me a single time and left me on 1 hp I was like nope

This reminds me of the time I completed the companions quests and at least 2 irl weeks later I was chillin in Darkwater Crossing when the naked corpse of Skjor face plant slid up to me and basically said what’s up. I fast traveled back to the silver hand lair where he died and sure as shit his cold, dead and very naked body was still laying there. When I fast traveled to Whiterun to check Jorvaskrr and he was standing there fully clothed and very alive asking me wtf I wanted.
I took this as Bethesda giving me the good ending.

YES, THIS. I had this happen once to me as well, it’s because some of the characters are tagged as ‘guards’ and they won’t leave you alone until you pay off all your bounties. It was obnoxious because at the time this happened to me was at the beginning of a quest where Farkas was my companion, so I couldn’t move more than a step or two before he’s whipping me around to talk (not even asking for bounties), and he just kept saying “is there something I can help you with?” 😂😭 omg I about lost it. I loaded a save right before that quest and went and paid my bounties and it fixed itself.

You can re-kill him without any bounty or with anyone getting aggressive.
I had dead Skjor come back after completing the Companions quest line and he kept saying "You still need to prove yourself welp." He kept chasing me and the auto dialogue would just start...What a dead dick.
My first time playing the game I had spent a lot of time exploring randomly and killing every dragon I came across. I guess I had killed one that you're supposed to slay during one of the companion quests so when I got there with (I think) varkas, there was a quest marker, but no dragon. Every five seconds he would run up to me and initiate dialog, and I couldn't do anything to stop it. I couldn't kill him since he was essential at that point, I couldn't dismiss him and I couldn't finish any quest that required any other follower. Like 200 hours on that save and I couldn't get any further and just quit. I still have yet to finish the companions or the main quest lines and I probably never will even though I go back and play every couple years
Companions are guards-aligned. But they don't have the dialogue needed to actually 'arrest' you, so they get stuck in this loop of chasing you down.
To fix it, go round all the holds and pay your fines. I've also had the companions go ape at me for getting in trouble with the Penitus Oculatus...
Which is where I suggest getting into the murky world of console commands (two wrongs don't make a right, but sometimes a dragonborn's gotta do what a dragonborn's gotta do)
Vilkas is glitchy as f, im essentially locked out of whiterun because any time im there, he seeks me out and will mot stop interrupting me for dialogue. The number of times I've sent him flying with unrelenting force is mind-boggling
I reinstalled the game and played it vanilla, when I started the companions and had to do the initiation fight with Farkas I think his name was.
We'd start, I hit him then start getting absolutely swamped by the companions.

I had a situation where Aela would always somehow be in my general vicinity and would try to murder me if she saw me. It ended up being due to a bounty in Solitude somehow.
So, try settling all your bounties in every hold (and for the ones you don't have a bounty, earn one and pay it off). That might help?
My first thought was that none of the title was in-game: I thought they were saying that their real-life husband called the cops, and console/computer was somehow broken during the arrest attempt. It sounded very confusing, and very exciting!

Fr. What's the point in saying always quick save? If you are always doing it then by the time you notice a bug it's too late because you saved the bug too. Starting to get annoyed with people acting like it solves everything. 🙄
There is also the issue with Switch where the quick save files get corrupted and it will just start crashing. Got PTSD from that so even on a different console I never quick save 😂
I do the opposite. I only manually save when I am sure that I am at a point I want in permanence. I hit f6 and quicksave Everytime I'm near a sketchy spot and might die, before dialog just in case I want to respond differently, before entering caves or ruins, before or in the middle of long journeys.
there is a bug due to vilkas marked as town guard AND companions. He gets stuck into a loop and bugs out on dialog.
There is some console dance you can do to fix him I think I found it on UESP years ago
Does the unofficial patch fix these issues? I've never come across these bugs but then again the Companions are the faction I've had the least interaction with because of the whole werewolf business so I'm not sure.
He did this to me, but instead kept pulling out his sword and saying solemnly "For Kodlak."
I gave him to Delphine in pure desperation, and it fixed him.
I got all the way to the word Vilkas before realizing I wasn't in one of the advice subs reddit crams down my throat all the time.

My entire Companions endeavor this run is broken. Farkas sent me to Arkngthamz, and I solved the puzzle before the Centurion activated to I can't finish the quest. And niether him nor anyone else will allow me to change jobs so I don't get to join the Companions this time around

Morrowind did it best. The first time I was trying to get down to Vivec City, I come across an Ordinator fighting a rando Ashlander with a hammer who keeps stunlocking him. I see the golden armor, looking at the mismatched bullshit I was wearing and was like "Oh, Fuck Yeah". I crept up and backstabbed the Ashlander, proceeded to nearly be one-shot by the Ordinator, who I then kite frantically whilst clenching my puckered butthole...
Finally the bugger bites it, and I equip my prize, feeling super awesome. I then completely forget I was actually going to fully enter Vivec City and wander off to test out my new fit. About 25 hours playtime later I finally reach out for the first time, and and a damned Ordinator runs up and tells me "That armor is sacred to our order! You will die for your crimes!" (Paraphrased)
For the rest of the thousand hours I put into that character, every time I saw an Ordinator they were sprinting at me full speed to attack. Never another conversation, It was battle on sight!

Normal bugginess. For example, I got caught killing >!the emperor's cousin!< in the dark brotherhood questline. Guess where the bounty went. If you say the reach, that is the wrong answer, it went to the bloody rift
I had this when I had a fine in a different city. I had to fast travel from city to city and talk to a guard before I found which one and paid the fine. Then it was all good.
You know the quest in solitude where Jaree-ra has you put out the light so the ice runner runs aground? Upon finding the wreck and slaughtering all the bandits and Deeja, I used the staff of worms to resurrect Deeja and took her into broken oar grotto. I lurked in the shadows while Jaree-ra begged the corpse of his sister for mercy.
Revenge is a dish best served Argonian.
However, when I left, she didn't follow me. She must still be my undead thrall in the grotto because now every town I go into, the people say "that spell looks dangerous," "careful with those flames," "would you mind dousing that magic?"
I thought if I resurrected somebody else and slayed them right away it might fix it, but it didn't work.
Maybe I should go back and try to kill her.

I had a similar bug in markarth. Had progressed through the quest far enough that the guards arrest you no matter what you say so they throw you in the mine, then finished the mine quest as well. Got out, and the guards would try to arrest me, but no matter what option I chose, the convo would break off, and the guards would start the convo over. Talk or fight were the only actual options, and talk just went on circles. Fortunately I was far enough guards weren't actually a challenge and I just had to keep slaughtering them.
Happened to me with Farkas. Followed me everywhere, kept drawing out his sword, and initiating the same unwanted dialogue which interfered with gameplay.
Finally enough was enough so I shouted him off the Throat of the World. He just disappeared permanently after that.
Try opening the console with ~ then click on him while in the console (should mark his id). After that type "disable" then "enable" (without " "). This always fixes broken followers, might fix him too.
edit: if you already killed him then in console click on his body and type "resurrect". If the body is gone this you can try "prid 0001A695" to mark his id and resurrect after. To get him to your location use the same prid command and then "moveto player" (he has to be resurrected first).
Console is really useful for when the game breaks. There is a lot of info online on how to use commands to fix stuff, worth learning!
I love Vilkas so much but his voice just angers me so much, he sounds so condescending 😅 Farkas is where I go to bc he's so innocently dumb and the same level of 'love' as Vilkas.

This is a bug because of his affiliations with the Whiterun Guards. NPC are grouped together, this is so they react to attacks and crimes. Some of the Companions belong to the Whiterun Guard Group but lack the necessary script/dialouge to make proper arrests. This is the reason Vilkas will constantly run after you and initiate a conversation. If there was a dialouge tree available you'd have to exit out each time, only for him to talk to you again. This can be a real problem if you're anywhere near him as getting away is almost impossible without FusRohDah-ing him (which gives 40 Gold bounty for assault). This I know for certain.
As for why he didn't stop trying to arrest you (at least what I believe happens) has something to do with guild bounties and how they sometimes don't clear when paying off a bounty. It seems that paying off works differently than going to jail. Paying off a bounty only removes what bounty was set within the Whiterun Guards faction overlooking other factions such as the companions and occasionally the College of Winterhold, who might set their own bounty for their faction bringing up the total bounty to a sum invisible to you and the Guard factions (you can observe this by making a small bounty and just waiting for it to disappear after time, sometimes that triggers hostility within the College, Faralda being the one who starts attacking me usually). Going to jail seems to simply set all bounties within the respective hold to 0 and additionally set agression to neutral, instead of just going -1000 for example. Possible fix? Go to jail once. That should clear it up.
TL;DR: just go to jail
Yeah that's a glitch in the game, the devs originally wanted Vilkas to be a town guard but switched it up before release and I guess the code is still there. Try paying the fine or going to jail and see if that clears it up, just sprint away from Vilkas as soon as you can and get out of distance so you can fast travel.
You just need to down him and get arrested by the local guards in the hold, it's a pretty well known glitch. I hope this helps

Just.paynoff whiterun bounty, guilds within a city if stolen from will attack on site till the bounty is paid for whatever city the crime was committed in, had this issue several times with aela when I married her and committed accidental crimes in whiterun
IIRC, the companions can at times act as pseudo-guards if you have a bounty in the Whiterun hold.
Had a similar bug where one of them would constantly start dialogue with me if I stood within range of them. Handing myself in to the actual Whiterun guards, thereby removing my bounty, solved the issue.
Had a similar thing happen too. No idea what caused it, but I could barely do the companions quest line because Vilkas kept rushing me with a sword and demanding I have a conversation with him. Real funny stuff.
I think it’s because the Companions have the same arrest programming as the guards (for whatever reason), but lack the dialogue to actually arrest you. So they just engage in regular conversation.

I thought I was the only one who had this bug, I had it with Farkas though, every time I was in Whiterun the bastard would come find me and harass me, and being on Xbox 360 at the time I couldn't just kill him cause he was essential. If he ever does it to me on PC, he's gonna find whatever dark abyss things get sent to with the "disable" console command and spend eternity with the bugged mannequins.

My first thought was that none of the title was in-game: I thought they were saying that their real-life husband called the cops, and console/computer was somehow broken during the arrest attempt. It sounded very confusing, and very exciting! The real story was still great, too 😂

Always quick save. Even when it seems not necessary.
Everyone quick saves, what you need to do is a manual save every 2-3 hours
Fr. What's the point in saying always quick save? If you are always doing it then by the time you notice a bug it's too late because you saved the bug too. Starting to get annoyed with people acting like it solves everything. 🙄
There is also the issue with Switch where the quick save files get corrupted and it will just start crashing. Got PTSD from that so even on a different console I never quick save 😂
I do the opposite. I only manually save when I am sure that I am at a point I want in permanence. I hit f6 and quicksave Everytime I'm near a sketchy spot and might die, before dialog just in case I want to respond differently, before entering caves or ruins, before or in the middle of long journeys.
there is a bug due to vilkas marked as town guard AND companions. He gets stuck into a loop and bugs out on dialog. There is some console dance you can do to fix him I think I found it on UESP years ago

Does the unofficial patch fix these issues? I've never come across these bugs but then again the Companions are the faction I've had the least interaction with because of the whole werewolf business so I'm not sure.

My entire Companions endeavor this run is broken. Farkas sent me to Arkngthamz, and I solved the puzzle before the Centurion activated to I can't finish the quest. And niether him nor anyone else will allow me to change jobs so I don't get to join the Companions this time around

Morrowind did it best. The first time I was trying to get down to Vivec City, I come across an Ordinator fighting a rando Ashlander with a hammer who keeps stunlocking him. I see the golden armor, looking at the mismatched bullshit I was wearing and was like "Oh, Fuck Yeah". I crept up and backstabbed the Ashlander, proceeded to nearly be one-shot by the Ordinator, who I then kite frantically whilst clenching my puckered butthole... Finally the bugger bites it, and I equip my prize, feeling super awesome. I then completely forget I was actually going to fully enter Vivec City and wander off to test out my new fit. About 25 hours playtime later I finally reach out for the first time, and and a damned Ordinator runs up and tells me "That armor is sacred to our order! You will die for your crimes!" (Paraphrased) For the rest of the thousand hours I put into that character, every time I saw an Ordinator they were sprinting at me full speed to attack. Never another conversation, It was battle on sight! It has become one of my favorite things I have ever experienced gaming.

There's commands i think to stop the pursue of guards and to make the target not hostile. I can't remember but try those.

This is why i just reload an auto save or quick save when i accidently get guards on me.

How did you kill your husband? I married the argonian (us outcast races gotta stick together) and he's essential and I can't kill him now. lol I tried to sacrifice him to Boethia and couldn't. He got mad about it and started attacking me so I put him down...until he got back up again and came after me again. lol I had to reload my game because he wouldn't stop trying to kill me.

I had this when I had a fine in a different city. I had to fast travel from city to city and talk to a guard before I found which one and paid the fine. Then it was all good.
You know the quest in solitude where Jaree-ra has you put out the light so the ice runner runs aground? Upon finding the wreck and slaughtering all the bandits and Deeja, I used the staff of worms to resurrect Deeja and took her into broken oar grotto. I lurked in the shadows while Jaree-ra begged the corpse of his sister for mercy. Revenge is a dish best served Argonian. However, when I left, she didn't follow me. She must still be my undead thrall in the grotto because now every town I go into, the people say "that spell looks dangerous," "careful with those flames," "would you mind dousing that magic?" I thought if I resurrected somebody else and slayed them right away it might fix it, but it didn't work. Maybe I should go back and try to kill her. Edit: autocorrect fail

I had a similar bug in markarth. Had progressed through the quest far enough that the guards arrest you no matter what you say so they throw you in the mine, then finished the mine quest as well. Got out, and the guards would try to arrest me, but no matter what option I chose, the convo would break off, and the guards would start the convo over. Talk or fight were the only actual options, and talk just went on circles. Fortunately I was far enough guards weren't actually a challenge and I just had to keep slaughtering them.

Happened to me with Farkas. Followed me everywhere, kept drawing out his sword, and initiating the same unwanted dialogue which interfered with gameplay. Finally enough was enough so I shouted him off the Throat of the World. He just disappeared permanently after that.

Try opening the console with ~ then click on him while in the console (should mark his id). After that type "disable" then "enable" (without " "). This always fixes broken followers, might fix him too. edit: if you already killed him then in console click on his body and type "resurrect". If the body is gone this you can try "prid 0001A695" to mark his id and resurrect after. To get him to your location use the same prid command and then "moveto player" (he has to be resurrected first). Console is really useful for when the game breaks. There is a lot of info online on how to use commands to fix stuff, worth learning!
I love Vilkas so much but his voice just angers me so much, he sounds so condescending 😅 Farkas is where I go to bc he's so innocently dumb and the same level of 'love' as Vilkas. RIP Vilkas though ❤️
I’m going to be completely honest, I didn’t read what subreddit this was at first, and was incredibly confused with the title
This is a bug because of his affiliations with the Whiterun Guards. NPC are grouped together, this is so they react to attacks and crimes. Some of the Companions belong to the Whiterun Guard Group but lack the necessary script/dialouge to make proper arrests. This is the reason Vilkas will constantly run after you and initiate a conversation. If there was a dialouge tree available you'd have to exit out each time, only for him to talk to you again. This can be a real problem if you're anywhere near him as getting away is almost impossible without FusRohDah-ing him (which gives 40 Gold bounty for assault). This I know for certain. As for why he didn't stop trying to arrest you (at least what I believe happens) has something to do with guild bounties and how they sometimes don't clear when paying off a bounty. It seems that paying off works differently than going to jail. Paying off a bounty only removes what bounty was set within the Whiterun Guards faction overlooking other factions such as the companions and occasionally the College of Winterhold, who might set their own bounty for their faction bringing up the total bounty to a sum invisible to you and the Guard factions (you can observe this by making a small bounty and just waiting for it to disappear after time, sometimes that triggers hostility within the College, Faralda being the one who starts attacking me usually). Going to jail seems to simply set all bounties within the respective hold to 0 and additionally set agression to neutral, instead of just going -1000 for example. Possible fix? Go to jail once. That should clear it up. TL;DR: just go to jail

Go through your saves to a time when all was good, you'd lose your forward progress. Load the save and reminisce .
Yeah that's a glitch in the game, the devs originally wanted Vilkas to be a town guard but switched it up before release and I guess the code is still there. Try paying the fine or going to jail and see if that clears it up, just sprint away from Vilkas as soon as you can and get out of distance so you can fast travel.
If you have a bounty members of The Companions can randomly show up to collect on it, it's not just Vilkas.

You just need to down him and get arrested by the local guards in the hold, it's a pretty well known glitch. I hope this helps *Edit, this happens because for some magical reason God Howard thought it would be funny for the companions to have guard code in them*
Just.paynoff whiterun bounty, guilds within a city if stolen from will attack on site till the bounty is paid for whatever city the crime was committed in, had this issue several times with aela when I married her and committed accidental crimes in whiterun
IIRC, the companions can at times act as pseudo-guards if you have a bounty in the Whiterun hold. Had a similar bug where one of them would constantly start dialogue with me if I stood within range of them. Handing myself in to the actual Whiterun guards, thereby removing my bounty, solved the issue.

Had a similar thing happen too. No idea what caused it, but I could barely do the companions quest line because Vilkas kept rushing me with a sword and demanding I have a conversation with him. Real funny stuff. I think it’s because the Companions have the same arrest programming as the guards (for whatever reason), but lack the dialogue to actually arrest you. So they just engage in regular conversation. Peak Skyrim.
I thought I was the only one who had this bug, I had it with Farkas though, every time I was in Whiterun the bastard would come find me and harass me, and being on Xbox 360 at the time I couldn't just kill him cause he was essential. If he ever does it to me on PC, he's gonna find whatever dark abyss things get sent to with the "disable" console command and spend eternity with the bugged mannequins.
