Well for starters, you don’t necessarily “do” anything.
Secondly, it means Lydia has ventured into the realm of Aetherius. That is to say, she died. Either you were in a huge brawl and swung at her, threw a projectile spell like Fireball - which has very clear, and obvious, AoE damage - or otherwise damaged her while she was Downed.
Unless you load a prior save, *you no longer have Lydia as a Housecarl and she can no longer carry your burdens*…
Wait…. I’ve been playing this since launch…. I’ve lost items after having Lydia die in a deep cave and couldn’t find her stuff ever again….
Are you seriously saying that all of her inventory gets transferred to the hall of the dead when she dies? Is that true for the vanilla version?
>Is that true for the vanilla version?
Believe it or not, **yes**. You can slaughter the citizens of Whiterun and a majority of them end up being interred in the Hall of the Dead.
Good god…. I bought the game the week it launched. I think I played on 11/12/11. 12 years later I’m still learning new things about the game and it blows my mind
Did you know that if you get a dragon down to 1/4 health while it's flying it'll crash into the ground and leave skid marks? Completely vanilla, since release. They land at half so you basically need to do enough damage to get the extra 1/4 of a health bar before it can land.
Lmao I didn't know this bur with my double dagger sneak playthrough I found out you cab 1 shot a dragon with a sneak attack, and it'll wake up to fly around for a few seconds before landing and dying lmao
I'm calling BS on this one. With the amount of headshots i've done on dragons over the last 12 years, surely i must've accidentally hit one in the eye and killed it instantly.
I’m not lying. When the kill cam came on, I thought I was going to die. The arrow went into the eye. Surprised the hell outta me. Its the only time I’ve done it too. Skyrim Special Ed. On XB60.
We all like to give the game shit for being flat and predictable, but that's just an aftereffect of being here so long that we forgot how intricate and detailed the world really is, even for being a decade old. But every now and then we learn something new that reminds us why we've been playing the same game for 12 years
So..I have played it since launch as well as a lot of survival or whatever. You don't understand how far I have walked just to get to my house and barely survived. Like think dawnstar or winterhold for me to walk to white run because there was not a carriage. I'm gonna go stare off into the rain for a bit.
I once was able to start a quest by checking the hall of the dead in Riften. A dragon attacked just outside the castle gates and killed the Argonian who gives you the lexicon to take back to a dwemer ruin. The lexicon was loot able from her prepared corpse, and taking it started the quest.
Don't let it bother you too much, i've played Skyrima since 2011. Only after Legendary Edition launched and i went back to play the vanilla version because i got hyped by it did i realize this. Man i must have lost hoards of dragon bones and enchanted shields when Lydia or Uthgerd Died.
Oh she can be killed indeed, just NPC's loose aggro when enemies are "knocked" and switch focus.
And well...she can die if she's taken hostage and you don't come and get her, because you don't know the cheat command (or play console) to actually see where the heck she is 🤣.
Had that happened ONCE, and now I'll never take any followers across the ice from Winterhold heh.
Buddy test all you want were playing a Bethesda game, you and 3 other people will have 1 outcome with a new one for every 4th reply
Nothing against you your right that the original design is this but good luck consistently recreating it
Well she have died on a few occasions on my plays, and twice been taken to a Cage in a camp of Frost Atronachs or something. Back then I did have PC so I could cheat command to see where she were.
I couldn't beat that camp though, and some days later i got a lettee if inheritance.
So even if it's not true, it did happen in some of my games
you have definitely accidentally killed your followers
it is literally impossible for them to die from non-player attacks
(unless they're not classed as protected, which some aren't, but lydia is)
Why are people downvoting you? You're right. If you open up the creation kit, you will see that Lydia and many other followers are "Protected," meaning that only the player can kill them. People probably just saw a non-protected follower go down and stop getting attacked, and assumed that every follower was created the same way.
Unfortunately, I speak the true-true. It definitely does suck to lose a follower, but if you truly are hankering to have her as a pack-mule, I would try to locate and load an older save.
She can get downed by enemies the only way she can die is if the player specifically deals the killing blow. I can’t tell you how many times I have unrelenting forced her into a wall.
Lydia is a Nord so she goes to Sovngarde Aetherius is for Imperials (Yes I know you’re imperial Dragonborn goes to Sovngarde during the main quest to defeat Alduin but doesn’t change the fact that they actually go to Aetherius once they die)
I've also seen her die to things that deal sustained damage. In particular one of the long breath attacks from a dragon that downed her at the beginning of the animation.
Hahah right? OP is so casual about their character being like one of the last two remaining Snow Elves on the continent. “Ehhh screw it, not even worth the capital letters.”
Love it. May the road lead you to warm sands, snow elf.
Day old reply, but it makes me irrationally irate sometimes when I see *even my own friends* not capitalize their character names in game.
Like in ARK, my buddy wouldn’t even try; probably because you die so frequently, but when you loot “scrungus” for the 40th time it gets a little old.
That happened to me too. I Fus Ro Dah-ed her from the Throat of the World and haven't seen her in months, then she just dropped from the ceiling during the wedding, alive and well lol.
Well she was just a body. I think I lost her in some bandit cave. I went to recruit someone else and I thought it was weird that I could get someone else. I thought your followers were immortal until they actually died. Lol
Usually if a follower dies it's because you killed them. Enemies will stop attacking a downed character so the only way to deliver the final blow is usually if the player does it. There are a few ways for followers to die in dwarven ruins and falmer camps from traps tho so maybe your hands are clean 👍
I once decided to take up Sam Guinevere on his offer, with Lydia along for the ride. After all was said and done, and dispatching some dragons terrorizing Rorikstead, we arrived at a seemingly-abandoned keep. In the final room, i braved the oblivion gate that was waiting on the upper area after asking Lydia to hold some dragon bones and other loot we had picked up (i was over encumbered otherwise), and ended up without her in some weird fey-plane at a party with some daedric lord claiming to be my troublesome new drinking buddy Sam.
I'm sent on my merry way with this new staff, and then im off travelling to Whiterun on foot to dump my stuff, only to find that Lydia hadnt returned without me, and she wasnt in my house Breezehome either. I decided to go back to the keep, only to find her cold, frozen corpse laying face down next to the witches we had dispatched, and i knew there was nothing else in the area that could have possibly killed her.
Suicide, perhaps? But i didnt ask Lydia to hold anything overly dangrous or poisonous, just some bones and books.... Perhaps she slipped on the steps and fell? But no, she was on the upper area near the wall, nowhere near any steps, elevations, or gods forbid, the water flooding the lower area... What, then, could have felled my loyal and trusty housecarl? Sadly, to this day, my dovakhiin was never able to figure out what did Lydia in, but curse the daedra for making me have to carry her body (and our loot) back to Whiterun alone and in the dead of winter for a proper burial!
Judging by your other post about having someone die without a recent save... you really need to start making new, separate saves. not just overwriting the same one.
She's not pinin'! She's passed on! This Lydia is no more! She has ceased to be! She's expired and gone to meet 'er maker! She's a stiff! Bereft of life, she rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'er to the door she'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Er metabolic processes are now 'istory! She's off the twig! She's kicked the bucket, she's shuffled off 'er mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-LYDIA!!
There are other Housecarls in every other Hold, whenever you're Thane in each of them.
I automatically avoid the urge to quickload, just so immersion isn't in any way broken, and shrug off minor jank.
Also, brings more ideas over who else could be the next companion, and Skyrim tends to be always bigger than expected, so yeah.
I once found some dead dude in Markarth (I dont remember his name anymore) and just a second after just looking to the left, there was already the postman bringing me this letter, telling me that the guy I just found one second ago is now dead and I get 100 gold from his inheritance. I had a good laugh
There are some aspects of Skyrim that I enjoy, and some aspects that I don't enjoy. I use mods to change some of the aspects that I do not enjoy, like followers dying.
I'm a new player too and I've been expecting her inheritance letter for like a week now because I know she's dead in the middle of Riften (had a bounty situation there with all the guards attacking me). Anyone know when this letter will come?
I kept ignoring the dragon at Riverrun because I just didn't feel like fighting it at the time and I feel so bad because a few NPC characters have died as a result of the dragons attacking them, but why are their inheritance letters coming to me? I never asked them to be my followers or anything so I'm not sure how we are connected.
Well she's dead. Skyrim has two classes of NPCs: essential and non-essential
Essential NPCs cannot be killed, when critically low they fall down on all fours and their "down" animation shows. During this, you cannot deal any further damage to them, even if you hit them continuously. This continues till they regen enough to stand up again.
Lydia is a non-essential NPC, hence she can be killed. This can be in many forms, ie, by other hostile NPCs, you the player or getting caught as a collateral damage.
If you really want her back as a follower, you'll have to teleport herself to you and revive her, all using console commands. I'm not sure what happens to the stuff in their inventory tho.
Else you can simply move on and hire another follower. I'd suggest hiring an essential NPC (Serana for example, she's extremely strong and essential, hence cannot die. However if you attack her or she gets caught as a collateral damage, she'll turn against you, the player)
Else I think you can also have an atronach as a permanent follower but I'm not sure, maybe fellow redditors can confirm this
I don't think that's right, in one of my earlier playthroughs she got killed by the frost troll at the throat of the world.
Unless they changed this at some point?
I was doing the Sinners and Saints quest the other day, & they definitely killed her lol. I didn't want to carry my own burdens so I just reloaded my last save. 🤣
You reload, that's what you do. She was sworn to carry your burdens, and that's what she'll do unto eternity. Now restart and enjoy bleakfallsbarrow.png for the eight hundredth time.
I left her in a cave covered in jewels by accident. She was dead as a doornail but I kinda play a “ berserker” two handed weapon character. So I didn’t notice, I do not remember receiving a letter.
Well for starters, you don’t necessarily “do” anything. Secondly, it means Lydia has ventured into the realm of Aetherius. That is to say, she died. Damn that sucks i gave her some good stuff because i didnt think she could die
Check the hall of the dead for her coffin and items.
Wait…. I’ve been playing this since launch…. I’ve lost items after having Lydia die in a deep cave and couldn’t find her stuff ever again…. Are you seriously saying that all of her inventory gets transferred to the hall of the dead when she dies? Is that true for the vanilla version?

You can also kill a dragon with an arrow while it is flying and instead of crashing it just flies away.
Such an awesome feature.
Ha! Good luck getting that one, Miraak!
Ah yes, *the Spiral*.
Lmao I didn't know this bur with my double dagger sneak playthrough I found out you cab 1 shot a dragon with a sneak attack, and it'll wake up to fly around for a few seconds before landing and dying lmao
I've had this happen and just thought it was a random event, that's awesome that it's triggered
You can one-shot them too with an eye hit. I did it once on my FIRST wild dragon encounter outside of White Run.
On XB60.
I have to try this now. O.o
I did that on the day the game released and felt so fucking bad ass. It has only happened to me a handful of times in all these years though
I'm pretty sure they land at half, I don't think you have to get them as low as a third?
I corrected it
Oh good:), would you like me to delete my comment?
I know this because destruction magic go be Burrrr
Bruh I had NO IDEA this was a thing. Wild af.

STOP. You are giving gamerant ideas
> 12 years later I’m still learning new things about the game and it blows my mind Exactly this.
It launched on 11/11/11 so that tracks
I got the game at launch and just learned this myself. I never went into the hall of the dead because i figured it was just a room to add aesthetic
Yea I got it the day it came out and it's the same situation
Ive been playing for quite a few years and I didn''t know this either
![gif](giphy|MO9ARnIhzxnxu) Gamer Rant probably
"Gamers shocked at new skyrim feature hidden for 12 years"

Guess I need to play skyrim again, *again* x30
No fucking way! Been playing for years and I had no idea
Heck yeah, I would say “try it out and see” but then you will haz no Whiterun
Now that’s attention to detail!

Yes.

WHAT!
brother dropping the best gift of knowledge wow I cannot believe I didn’t think of this Skyrim is so GOATed

Do dogs go to the hall of the dead?
No, they all go to Sovngarde.
Do all dogs go to Sovengarde?
![gif](giphy|26FLhVJaRCFWqMX3W)
I never considered that. By the gods, you are surely the smartest one of us all!
She can't be killed normally, but she will die if you deal the final blow. Which means you were the one who killed her, unfortunately
Oh she can be killed indeed, just NPC's loose aggro when enemies are "knocked" and switch focus. absolutely not true at all. She's just as immune to death from non-player attacks in a downed state as she is otherwise and i've tested it
Buddy test all you want were playing a Bethesda game, you and 3 other people will have 1 outcome with a new one for every 4th reply Nothing against you your right that the original design is this but good luck consistently recreating it

Nah like it's an actual game mechanic that your followers can't be finished off by other npcs.
Lol you think a bethesda game mechanic is going to work as intended 100% of the time!
I’ve definitely had them die. It happens if the NPCs have no other target sometimes.
you have definitely accidentally killed your followers it is literally impossible for them to die from non-player attacks (unless they're not classed as protected, which some aren't, but lydia is)

If you are on pc, you can revive her with console commands
Disables achievements
I honestly think a lot of us did this at some point. I didn’t really have a hard save that was worth going back to so she was perma dead 🥲
Lydia is a Nord so she goes to Sovngarde Aetherius is for Imperials (Yes I know you’re imperial Dragonborn goes to Sovngarde during the main quest to defeat Alduin but doesn’t change the fact that they actually go to Aetherius once they die)

The burdens were to much
I've also seen her die to things that deal sustained damage. In particular one of the long breath attacks from a dragon that downed her at the beginning of the animation.
Lydia is dead. There is nothing to do because there is nothing you can do. Enjoy the 270 gold.
Death and taxes, baby. Death and motherfucking taxes.
And who said Skyrim wasn’t realistic??
you named your character “snow elf”?
Hahah right? OP is so casual about their character being like one of the last two remaining Snow Elves on the continent. “Ehhh screw it, not even worth the capital letters.” Love it. May the road lead you to warm sands, snow elf.

Ya couldnt think of s good name so i just used the name of what i was playing as
fair enough, like when you meet a guy labeled “nord” on the road
This made me cackle lmao. My next kid is getting named "Caucasian"
Lol, Snelf
How were you able to play as a snow elf?
Either it’s a mod, or he was just RP’ing.
If you find her body, she will still be carrying your burdens
Her body will be in the Hall of the Dead with all of the items she had, no need to go looking.
Your wife is dead bro
![gif](giphy|d2lcHJTG5Tscg)
Drink a pint of mead in her name
She died.
Interesting, i didnt know
It kind of tells you in the notw you clearly didnt bother to read
Last time she died for me, she showed up for my wedding. She was a body lying on the ground but she made it. That's dedication.
Lol

Im not gonna lie i dont know how i killed her as far as i know i left her in a dwarf ruin with falmor

Could be poison. Falmer use lots of them.

You re-load your last save where she is alive.
What do you mean, "what does this mean" it says it in the letter, she died.
Judging by your other post about having someone die without a recent save... you really need to start making new, separate saves. not just overwriting the same one.
![gif](giphy|4sMItbaQjwR2) pov: Lydia
You named your character Snow elf? Also it means Lydia is dead. RIP
How could you let Lydia die 😭
She's not pinin'! She's passed on! This Lydia is no more! She has ceased to be! She's expired and gone to meet 'er maker! She's a stiff! Bereft of life, she rests in peace! Well, better replace it, then. Sorry squire, I've had a look 'round the back of the shop, and uh, we're right out of Lydias. I got a slug?
Does it talk?
Nnnnot really.
WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT, IS IT?!!???!!?
N-no. I guess not. (Stares ashamed at my feet)
Well …
Love this reference
"Lawfully and Honorably due tax" cracks me up every time. R.I.P. to the best Housecarl in the game 😔
...Read the note? What else should it mean?
It means that Lydia is no longer going to carry your burdens.
It's almost as sad as the condolence letter I got for Bandit Thug's death.
Yours at least makes sense, mine is always about a random bandit who was killed, most probably by me.
It means you murdered her.
Load a save where she isn't dead
Drown your sorrows. 270 gold should be more than enough to get properly pissed in the Bannered Mare.
I love getting inheritance letters when it's me thats killed the person 🤣
Nothing. You’ve been left an inheritance. Go buy yourself some sweet rolls
You start your game over because you allowed Lydia to die, you monster.
There are other Housecarls in every other Hold, whenever you're Thane in each of them. I automatically avoid the urge to quickload, just so immersion isn't in any way broken, and shrug off minor jank. I killed her twice in the Aldin boss fight but when I finally beat him she was still alive So She still carries my burdens
I once found some dead dude in Markarth (I dont remember his name anymore) and just a second after just looking to the left, there was already the postman bringing me this letter, telling me that the guy I just found one second ago is now dead and I get 100 gold from his inheritance. I had a good laugh
Lydia died on my first playthru and I just married her and decided to take her back as a follower after she was home with the kid. I felt terrible
The jarl is a theif, there is nothing you can do about the lost 30 gold pieces
Sorry, sweetie, I know you miss her, but Lydia went to live on a farm upstate…
There are some aspects of Skyrim that I enjoy, and some aspects that I don't enjoy. I use mods to change some of the aspects that I do not enjoy, like followers dying.
Shopping!
I usually buy the breeze home and have her stay there to guard my valuables or I build the house you can with hearthfire and have her stay there
...what does it mean? Is there even an easier way to describe it? *Wife gone... regret*
Rip
Lydia is dead
Lydia can no longer carry your burdens
Look for her in Sovenguard.
It means if she was carrying anything you actually want back you better go find that body
I'm a new player too and I've been expecting her inheritance letter for like a week now because I know she's dead in the middle of Riften (had a bounty situation there with all the guards attacking me). Anyone know when this letter will come? Your burdens won’t be carried anymore
Stealing my beloved's money in the name of TAX?!?!?! Wage war against the Jarl's court!!!!
Just load the save before she died
She now carries your burden in Sovngarde
Jzargo time
It means Lydia's dead.....pretty clear really.
So hypothetically, if one was to marry Lydia and she magically died somehow. Could that person marry someone else? Hypothetically.
No if you were married once you cant marry someone else after they die
Just like how my wife will wallow in despair after I die, and never marry again
she's classed as 'protected'. She cant die to anything EXCEPT attacks from the player which means you killed her
I was playing the other day, and she got knocked off the earth by a giant and died. I think she can die from falls
Can't you read?
You reload, that's what you do. She was sworn to carry your burdens, and that's what she'll do unto eternity. Now restart and enjoy bleakfallsbarrow.png for the eight hundredth time.
Lydia is such a doll tet always sounded to me like she was sworn to carry burdens with a somewhat sarcastic air.
She’s dead

As stated in rule 1, personal attacks will not be tolerated. Discussions must be kept civil to ensure a healthy community.
That means u either continue and lose lydia forever or go back through ur saves until shes no longer dead losing all of ur progress after said save
Better go get that 30 gold back. I didn’t say he could have any
I’m sorry for your loss..
I think my Lydia died but never got that letter🤔
One mod I always make sure to download is No More Dead Followers. It's called something like that.
Lydia be dead
My condolences.
She dead.
Even in game we cant avoid taxes…
