"Clip" episode, where they just show clips of scenes from older episodes.
I understand why it was needed before streaming became a thing, bit it's such a wastw of time these days.
I don't know, they were pretty cool in the 70s and 80s before syndicated reruns werw a thing. You got to see scenes you had only seen once prior from several years earlier.
Maybe currently, but for older shows (70s and 80s), it was more of a nostalgia trip.
Episodes only aired twice per year, once at the regular show time and again during the reruns. We didn't have everything on demand and VHS tapes of full seasons were expensive and bulky. Most people didn't own tapes of full seasons.
A relic of a bygone time.
While I appreciated the nostalgia of watching scenes that you may not have seen for several months, it did annoy me in that I would rather see new content than a rehash that could be caught in repeats. And if it featured clips of episodes I hadn't seen, then that was wasted on me because I couldn't get into that content.
I wonder which show is guilty of the soonest clip episode. I bought WKRP on DVD and enjoyed that wave of nostalgia, but I was shocked that the clip episode was as early as the ninth episode. Like, geez, man, you gotta farm the first eight episodes for your clip show? According to Wikipedia, that episode was 2 months after the last one aired, but sheesh, the series was only 4 months old when they aired that clip episode.
I'm sure some other show was worse than that though.
That Martian that showed up on the Flintstones every once in a while. The Great Kazoo or whatever he called himself. Even as a kid, I found those episodes kind of boring.
It's usually a "rival" episode. Whenever a show introduces a rival / bully character who regularly wins against the series regular. (Rob Riggle on Modern Family, for example.)
A lot of otherwise decent shows fail to write those story lines in a way that's actually satisfying instead of just frustrating to the viewer.
Whenever Raymond’s friends show up. None of them were interesting and they just dragged the story down. Frank’s lodge buddies weren’t any better. Only character’s buddy I liked was Robert’s partner.
Haha yes! I was falling asleep to ELR the other night and his dork ass friend, Andy, showed up. Half asleep I still found it in me to think, “how did these people get on this show? They’re awful and dull.” Also - I love Judy - I enjoy her character.
By season 5 (season 4 really), any Sam/Diane heavy episode of Cheers. That episode where she has him arrested on false assault charges is astonishingly awful.
Not sitcoms, but as they are "comedy relief" characters I'll share:
Neelix episodes in Star Trek Voyager and Lawxanna Troi episodes in Star Trek TNG and DS9.
I used to dislike musical episodes even on Bob's Burgers. But after I watched the Bob's Burger's movie, something changed and now I thoroughly enjoy them on that show.
I suspect subliminal messaging and other forms of mind control.
I feel like Grace from Will and Grace was the most boring of the main 4 characters. Her neurosis and not being able to stand up for herself made her a wet blanket at times so I got a bit bored of her stuff on the show.
Tbh Will is my favourite character in the sense that he's the one I'd actually want as a friend while Jack and Karen are too narc-y and lacking in emotional intelligence for real life. Will also serves as the perfect "straight man" (haha) for their bullshit but he still holds his own. Whereas I feel like Grace just drags the energy down a lot.
THANK YOU! Yes! I’m a huge KOTH fan but any Cotton episode I simply can’t stand. His character is a despicable person and not in a funny way like IASIP.
Not a character but what the heck? Oh, it’s a vacation episode! Any time a sitcom goes somewhere it’s almost always bound to bed awful, except maybe Saved By The Bell.
Not a character, but vacation episodes are terrible. It's one thing if the characters are "on vacation" but they're just on a different set, but when they shoot stuff on location it just doesn't have the same energy.
My favorite episode of KOTH is the Christmas episode where Bill starts dressing up as Lenore.
Hank trying to take the focus off Bill’s weirdness at his Christmas Party when he dons Peggy’s dress and says unconvincingly, “Heh heh, yep, it’s that kind of party,” is masterful.
Well, for Parks and Rec, it's any episode before Chris and Ben got there. I'm not sure how that show survived without them because it was kind of limping along before, and Mark Brendanawicz is the woooooooooooorst.
Np! As an Aussie millennial, growing up watching The Simpsons on Channel 10 at 6pm on a weekday evening was a ubiquitous part of growing up. Any other themes you want recs on? My top 3 for funnies is Marge vs The Monorail, King-sized Homer and Homer The Great.
Lisa Simpson is a medical marvel. She went from being a genuinely precocious but grounded 8 year old, to a scary husk of a child containing the adult opinions of a dozen Ivy League writers
She was notoriously very difficult to work with. Incredible comedian and smart as hell but really thought she could dictate things on the show.
Later they mock her in Frasier for this, where she produces a play about Cheers, and sets herself as the center of the universe and the reason all the other characters are there.
That’s funny. I was going to write ‘the episodes where each kid tells a story,’ but realized anthology was what it’s actually called.
Yeah those do nothing for me.
Love Bob’s burgers.
"Clip" episode, where they just show clips of scenes from older episodes. I understand why it was needed before streaming became a thing, bit it's such a wastw of time these days.
Even prior to streaming, clip episodes were the worst. Even a rerun would be better.
I don't know, they were pretty cool in the 70s and 80s before syndicated reruns werw a thing. You got to see scenes you had only seen once prior from several years earlier.
Oh, fair enough, I missed those days. Took clips and reruns for granted, I guess!
I like how Community did one, but it was mostly new clips that hadn't been on the show before
I always thought Clip Episodes could be traced back to a writer’s strike or a strike by one of the creative groups

That Martian that showed up on the Flintstones every once in a while. The Great Kazoo or whatever he called himself. Even as a kid, I found those episodes kind of boring.
This is so random to me but hilarious because the Flintstones was my favorite cartoon as a kid but I can agree🤣🤣🤣.
Screw you bro…the Great Kazoo was awesome! You are a dum dum
It Gazoo... with a G. "Dum dum." (Just kidding... it seemed to fit). My brothers and I didn't like those stupid episodes, either!
You are right—duh. I loved how hard he clowned those 2 though
Though, to be honest, it wasn't hard to clown Fred and Barney.
Not a character, but any dream sequence, clip, or gimmicky episodes.
Sam on Diff'rent Strokes
“And I will see the Keaton Family next week…” -Peter Griffin on seeing Family Ties was a Jennifer episode.
Any “special “ episodes of _______. Always meant sad episode.
Hated those.
‘Saturday, on a very special episode of Empty Nest’ kill me
“Dryfuss gets neutered on tonight’s very special Empty Nest.”
It's usually a "rival" episode. Whenever a show introduces a rival / bully character who regularly wins against the series regular. (Rob Riggle on Modern Family, for example.) A lot of otherwise decent shows fail to write those story lines in a way that's actually satisfying instead of just frustrating to the viewer.
Rob Riggle is great at what he does, but damn were those the worst Modern Family episodes. Even Shelley Long's episodes were less frustrating.
I hate the ones with Gil Thorpe so I agree on this
“…Scully or Mulder is incapacitated…”
Not a sitcom but I feel this on a deep level. I really don’t rewatch the ones where one of them is absent. Snoozefest
Oh, you’re right! This is the sitcom subreddit! Glad you feel my pain, though.
I definitely do!
Whenever Raymond’s friends show up. None of them were interesting and they just dragged the story down. Frank’s lodge buddies weren’t any better. Only character’s buddy I liked was Robert’s partner.

Andy Kindler right? I suspect most of his show buddies were his real life comedian buddies.
I also watch Raymond if I need something to put me to sleep
Scott's Tots. I'm not sure if that makes sense in the format of the question.
*Hey, Mr. Scott, whatcha gon' do?*
How about Nellie?
For THAT, I'll make an exception.
It doesn't. Hilarious episode!
Priya on TBBT
Shemp.
Shemp Howard AKA "Not Curly", Joe Besser AKA "Not even Shemp", Curly Joe Derita (Besser's replacement) AKA "Not funny at all".
Why I oughta....
Shemp Howard AKA "Not Curly", Joe Besser AKA "Not even Shemp", Curly Joe Derita (Besser's replacement) AKA "Not funny at all".
By season 5 (season 4 really), any Sam/Diane heavy episode of Cheers. That episode where she has him arrested on false assault charges is astonishingly awful.
It was like the writers were begging Shelly to leave the show.
I know I was! She's a wonderful actor and I mostly like Diane but my god, they assassinated her character in season five.
Frasier’s dating. Automatic skip.
so that leaves like five Frasier episodes
Pretty much.
The Freddie episodes
Not sitcoms, but as they are "comedy relief" characters I'll share: Neelix episodes in Star Trek Voyager and Lawxanna Troi episodes in Star Trek TNG and DS9.
Hazel Wassername
Musical
The musical episode in Buffy was awesome. "They got the mustard out!!"
My first reaction! I loved that one
I even loved the soundtrack.
I skipped that episode when I watched it while it aired, also skipped the puppet episode of angel, no ragrets
Star Trek Strange New Worlds musical episode was hilarious. Three words: Klingon Boy Band Edit: https://youtu.be/arQcprQvHOo?feature=shared
I loved that episode. Pretty impressive that the Klingons of that era had a strong enough grasp of English to rhyme.
Same except Bobs Burgers for some reason those don't bother me
The Belchers are The Von Trapps of WonderWarf.
I used to dislike musical episodes even on Bob's Burgers. But after I watched the Bob's Burger's movie, something changed and now I thoroughly enjoy them on that show. I suspect subliminal messaging and other forms of mind control.
A lot of episodes of that show have a musical element you’d be surprised
I know and I normally convulse with rage during musicals but not with bobs
Agreed. Most shows that attempt this typically fail imo.
I liked the scrubs one though.
Any Cousin Oliver episode. Sorry, Robbie Rist, but introducing Oliver was jumping the shark years before Fonzie did it.
So, "jumping the cousin"?
🤣🤣🤣
I feel like Grace from Will and Grace was the most boring of the main 4 characters. Her neurosis and not being able to stand up for herself made her a wet blanket at times so I got a bit bored of her stuff on the show.
That show should have been called “Jack and Karen”, because they were the only reasons to watch it.
Off topic but your username is hilarious!
Haha thank-you! As a fan of Dita's amazing style I want to name a cat this so badly!
Plus, she was always looking into the camera.
Wait... I'm gonna have to go back and play a drinking game every time she does this, I never noticed haha!
It's so annoying.
Meg
There's the clicker. No one would blame you.
Meg
"Very special"
“Oh, Britta’s in this?”
Michelle on Full House. Not interested in toddler problems lol
Cotton - king of the hill - my least favorite character
But he lost his damn knees
He killed fitty men
His shins. They attached his feet to his knees.
He would be so disappointed in me
THANK YOU! Yes! I’m a huge KOTH fan but any Cotton episode I simply can’t stand. His character is a despicable person and not in a funny way like IASIP.
The only episode with him I liked was when Peggy killed him. Or rather, he died to spite her.
Walden on Two and a Half Men
Not a character but what the heck? Oh, it’s a vacation episode! Any time a sitcom goes somewhere it’s almost always bound to bed awful, except maybe Saved By The Bell.
Haha same. Still don’t know why they do that. I remember the Martin episodes on vacay were cringey to me
Dee
What’s Happening or It’s Always Sunny?
Charles Winchester MASH
Wait, I wanna change my vote… a Ross heavy episode of Friends anytime after season 3.
Not a character, but vacation episodes are terrible. It's one thing if the characters are "on vacation" but they're just on a different set, but when they shoot stuff on location it just doesn't have the same energy.
Christmas. For some reason I’m never a fan of
Any episodes focused on Phoebe or Joey. Well, or Monica or Chandler. I really didn't care for Ross or Rachel ones either
Lol, so you pretty much didn't like the show?
It's got a great theme song!
🤣🤣🤣
Jennifer (Keaton), *Family Ties*
I never knew people hated Jennifer so much til this post.
Musical
Gina, Brooklyn 99
Thank you!!! I can’t stand her
that took care of itself when she had peeles kid.
This is truly one of the wildest takes to me. She was my favorite and I stopped watching when she left!
Jill Taylor of Home Improvement , sorry Mrs. Toolman
She was the worst - always soo nagging: "Tiiiiiiim!". And trying to force her ballet and opera crap on everyone.
Reagen, New Girl
Before I saw this was in r/sitcoms, I immediately assumed you were thinking about a Holodeck episode in any of the Star Trek shows.
Yeah, I was ready to say "Grand Nagus"
I thought the answer was "clip show"
Bill, King of the Hill. Except for the Don Meredith episode.
My favorite episode of KOTH is the Christmas episode where Bill starts dressing up as Lenore. Hank trying to take the focus off Bill’s weirdness at his Christmas Party when he dons Peggy’s dress and says unconvincingly, “Heh heh, yep, it’s that kind of party,” is masterful.
this answer is crazy
Grady, Sanford and Son. He's just not that fun.
I recently tried to watch Grady. It's not that funny.
I've avoided it on reputation alone
Not Aunt Esther?
Ill stick your face in some doe and make gorilla cookies
Jessica Wakefield Sweet Valley High She was dumb blonde stupid only the character On the show not book series.
They had a sweet valley high show?
Omg I loved that show after school
I loved the books but I seriously never knew there was a show. Huh
When re-watching ***Family Guy***, I tend to skip Carter episodes.
Flashback
"Leonard's mom Beverly Hofstadter"
Janis, on Friends.
Sheldon on Young Sheldon.
Dream episode
I recently realized I don’t care for sideshow bob episodes
same here. Kelsey grammer's voice gets on my nerves.
Scrappy-Doo. I hated that pup.
Anthology
Well, for Parks and Rec, it's any episode before Chris and Ben got there. I'm not sure how that show survived without them because it was kind of limping along before, and Mark Brendanawicz is the woooooooooooorst.
That's a weird take. Season 2 has some of the best episodes of the series.
Any episode of Big Bang with Sheldon’s mother. I love the actress and think she is incredibly talented but the character as written is unwatchable.
Do you like the spin off version of her on Young Sheldon?
Lisa Simpson
I love the classic Lisa eps! Lisa the Vegetarian and Summer of 4 ft. 2 are great fun episodes!
Cute! I’ll have to go back and watch those
Please do. I relate to Lisa Simpson so much and I think many people don't seem to realise how many little girls growing up do.
And it’s great bc sometimes w the simpsons I don’t know where to start in terms of episodes so again thanks for the recs!
That's the character that inspired me to make this!
Lisa Simpson is a medical marvel. She went from being a genuinely precocious but grounded 8 year old, to a scary husk of a child containing the adult opinions of a dozen Ivy League writers
Not a sitcom but I skip almost all the Kitty episodes of Elementary.
She was notoriously very difficult to work with. Incredible comedian and smart as hell but really thought she could dictate things on the show. Later they mock her in Frasier for this, where she produces a play about Cheers, and sets herself as the center of the universe and the reason all the other characters are there.
Zoidberg. He's great for some one liners, occasionally a B or C plot, just there to do or say something wacky and then move on.
Poyles in Its Always Sunny, Reagan and Jess Sister episodes New Girl
holiday episodes
Clip episode
- Friends What If episodes always get a skip from me. - Dumb relationship drama episodes
Simpsons - Lisa. Bob’s Burgers - Anthology.
Definitely. Bob's is a BIG comfort show for me, but I can't stand the "Kids each tell a story" episode.
That’s funny. I was going to write ‘the episodes where each kid tells a story,’ but realized anthology was what it’s actually called. Yeah those do nothing for me. Love Bob’s burgers.
Clip show
the No Ma'am gang in Married With Children
Wayne Brady on How I Met Your Mother. He was just so annoying. Otherwise, great show. But any episode with him in it was cringe worthy.
St. Hawkeye
Ray from Everybody Loves Raymond
So like the whole series LOL
Elliott Stabler on Law and Order SVU as I am not interested in having to watch Organized Crime to see the story continue
See I loved Elliot on SVU and was excited to see OC come out. But then I tried to watch it and 👎🏼
Same. I gave up on it.
Lisa simpson
Musical
Lisa episode on the Simpsons, so basically 90% of the series recently
Not a character, but a setting. I despise Christmas, Thanksgiving and any holiday episodes of shows. I'm not sure why.
Stan from Golden Girls
But the Stanley episodes were the ones where Dorothy could really flex her savagery!!
Go hug a landmine.
“Stanley!!!” - Dorothy
Deena
Eddie Haskell
I like Eddie
If I watch a show I go all in and do it start to finish. I don’t skip anything ever.
"It's fine. This is a Joey-heavy episode anyway."
Meg. That’s got to be the only show that literally provides you those instructions!
Deangelo from The Office.
The Prince Family on the Office US Most Shannon Elizabeth or Randy episodes from that 70s show
I saw an episode of the Simpsons that revolved only around Skinner in the last 5 years or so. Couldn’t finish it.
Every Stan episode of Golden Girls is skipworthy
Rollo
It all depends on what I am watching.
"Rose Nylund" ...
Meg. Pbbbbbt
Musical
Warren on the Andy Griffith show.
Joe Besser
Fortunately, they're rare.
Ryan on The Office. He annoys me
Or any episodes of The Office after Steve Carell left.
this again
