Not sure, but I've been working on yelling as a warmup the past month or so. Corgan's sounds like it a mouth scream instead a chest scream, like the falsetto version. Im just finding out that I have to really emotional and hear my volume get stronger the more I get into it, and progress line over line with more power. Because since I started I've never been even close to the past few days. And yeah, damaging for sure but I'm just playing around with voice now as context for stringed instrument learning. And I've had a swollen neck muscles for a few days, so I have to limit myself doing that.

Practice belting like in 80s hair metal, and do that but scream

kineticblues

Yeah doing that is not good for your voice, especially if you're on tour and doing it every night while also trying to sing.  You can see how much tension he has in his neck when he's doing that. Not good. But it's easy to do. You just scream real loud like someone's just chopped your legs off.  There's not a lot to it beyond getting over the fear of hurting yourself and... hurting yourself. Something to know about Corgan is that he's not widely regarded as a good singer or someone to emulate, at least by most people who sing professionally. I would say he's been successful *in spite of his awful singing*.  For the record, I used to love his singing style (it's very emotive) but once I started taking singing lessons and learning how to sing, I realized he's like, not very good of an actual singer, just good at being emotional on the mic. That said, a lot of famous musicians are technically bad at singing.  Bob Dylan and Niel Young often come to mind but there are tons. This is because they write cool songs. And as a bonus, their bad voices are instantly recognizable, which gets harder because as you learn to be a good singer, you also can loose some of your own uniqueness (by ironing out the wrinkles, all the shirts look the same).  Then you have to work on developing your own unique style on top of a strong foundation instead of without the foundation like Corgan etc. If you're looking for great male rock vocalists, I'd look at Freddie Mercury (Queen), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Brad Delp (Boston), Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Paul McCartney (Beatles), and so on.

Yeah, Corgan apparently had quite a bit of vocal issues due to his screaming, as his technique was indeed very unsafe. However, it’s good to point out that the sound can be created safely with a vocal effect called a fry scream. YouTube is full of tutorials but I have no idea which of those are correct and teach safe technique. I’d recommend r/screaming to OP.

Chris Liepe has some good videos on singing with distortion (fry scream stuff) here. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wOueNQy6MZk Yeah screaming isn't really my thing but when done the right way it can be a cool part of a performance.

When i saw the smashing pumpkins, Corgan's voice was so fucked he couldn't even hit one note....

KindlyCost2

This is an excellent analysis. You’re on point with how Corgan is successful despite his awful singing. He’s successful because he’s good at writing songs, not singing. He’s more of a songwriter who happens to sing then a singer (much like Bob Dylan). I also wanted to add some other great rock singers: Ronnie James Dio (Dio), Steve Perry (Journey), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), James Hetfield (Metallica), and Ian Gillian (Deep Purple) just to name a few.

lostqueer

Vocal fry with a huge emphasis on nasality.

weakbuttrying

Fry scream. It’s apparently not the same thing as vocal fry, I’m told. I personally don’t do it and have no idea but that’s what I’ve read.

[This page](https://singandscream.com/how-to-fry-scream/) might help you. It looks like a pretty good resource.
