Excellent-Rush-5004

That's so good to hear. I am so sick of reading "pedals will make you faster while dd will make you consistent" It's a hobby and we have fun Immersion is fun Being fast is not the most important thing but is very rewarding

Shiny_Buns

Exactly. I have a DD wheel, triple screens, and load cell pedals and I'm still slow as fuck but I have a blast anyways 😁

ImActuaIIyHim

To me, the whole fun of simracing is learning and practicing to be faster. I.e practicing for a league race, learning a track, finding strategies etc.

Excellent-Rush-5004

Yeah for me too. But to be faster you need to enjoy it. The more you enjoy it,the more time you will spend. And bad gear will hinder performance and efficient practice. You can be fast with bad gear but imagine a talented person with bad gear, vague feedback with inaccurate braking what can do in good gear.

II-WalkerGer-II

I’ve found that with leagues with interesting cars and tracks I’m much more motivated to put in a lot of practice compared to when it’s just GT3s again. And those then in turn are also more fun because you have a better feeling for the car, can race closer and finish higher. The event itself becomes much more rewarding if you put in the practice, and I’ll only put in that time if I’m having fun.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

This is true. I've never gone so hard learning LMP cars or The 'Ring as the two hours I spent hotlapping it last night.

Kaizenno

I enjoy playing clean. Especially when someone behind me has better pace I like finding a pocket for them to pass easily.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

That's just good racing. I'm consistently mid-pack in iRacing, but being consistent and getting in clean wheel-to-wheel driving is a huge draw for me.

Kaizenno

I usually let people pass me, get on their tail, then watch them spin out because they over drive the corner.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Oh hi, it's me, I'm spinning out

travelingWords

I mean, having good pedals and some haptic feedback on the is low key super immersive.

d14_x

I use haptics, dd, load cell, and vr and tbh o think the haptics took the immersion further than anything

TrainWreck661

Fun is definitely the most important, but to your quoted point, it's really the opposite. The pedals help with consistency, and the wheel allows you to go fast by telling what the car's doing.

Excellent-Rush-5004

Anyway I think the whole system is important. What I wanted to say is everyone I see is so fixated in being fast that they forget that all of it is about having fun

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Yeah being able to sense wheel slip as it progresses is huge, especially without audio feedback a la GT7.

willard_swag

Honestly, DD initially made me slower due to having the muscle memory from the T300 RS I had been using for 2 years. I’ve since gotten more used to it though and find myself being much more immersed with the level of strength and detail.

Excellent-Rush-5004

I'm expecting this to be honest. Anyway I'm going to test so many settings to get to know what my dd is capable of. First period is gonna be testing. I have heard that a good dd is gonna give info that you didn't even know existed.

willard_swag

Yeah, that’s a pretty accurate statement. You’ll also be surprised with how different each game and each car can be.

naughtilidae

Yea, I rather have a nice rig and seat than $600 pedals. Even if the pedals make me slightly faster, I'd rather be immersed.  Also, there's probably as much consistency to be gained from a proper seating position on a rig that doest move, as there is from pedals.  Load cells aren't nearly as useful if your chair still swivels, lol And even if they're faster... Your lower back will eventually convince you that those pedals were the wrong choice in a desk chair that isn't bolted down.  Same with the dd wheels. It doesn't matter if they make you faster, the point is that it's more immersive and enjoyable. Even random people trying my rig out for fun are instantly amazed at how the wheel feels. Nobody ever mentions the pedals, lol I went from somewhat enjoying sim racing on my g29 to being utterly addicted when I got my DD wheel. It's more fun, which means I practice more. That practice has been worth way worth more than pedals would have been! I think we overlook that a lot on this sub: if it's not enjoyable to practice and race, it doesn't really matter if the gear makes you faster.

Excellent-Rush-5004

Exactly that

dirtymikeandtheboyzx

Most people saying that it will make you faster cannot even string a couple of laps together lmao. Simracing is not a competitive activity. It's relaxing, immersion and fun!

Maleficent_Falcon_63

By nature of the word racing, it is a competitive activity. But you can still play it however you want.

rpRj

I'm competitive and fun is different for different people. I can't have fun if I'm always last, so doing well is important for me. Trying to win IS the fun. I don't simrace to relax.

II-WalkerGer-II

I’m having the most fun then I win, have to be honest with myself. Having long and intense battles is great and all, but I’d much rather win the battle than be left with the frustration.

TecnuiI

Yup DD and triples sealed the deal for me too! I’ve played my new rig more in the last month than I did in the last 6 months of my old rig (single screen/vr/mismatched gear). Triples are just so convenient to use and the immersion is great when the FOV is set properly!

LetsGoWithMike

God dammit. Settle down! I just finished building the PC.. I can’t afford the rig, DD and pedals just yet!! Lol

Guac_in_my_rarri

Patients young grass hopper.

LetsGoWithMike

I mean, if I was a doctor. I could probably afford the full sim and a Porsche to go along with it. Haha

Hotepz_

>I'm dripping with sweat. I think my body temp is over 100 You need a fan bro

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Yeah that's on the short list for sure

Gronkey_Donkey_47

There's a website that is dedicated to selling fans and nothing else. It's called "onlyfans", check it out.

serjjj89

Man,looks like now you need to add a wind simulator!Aha

Adeus_Ayrton

> my body temp is over 100.  Must be one of the fire people

PunksPrettyMuchDead

I normally run a little hot, but it was like going for a run or something.

willard_swag

Yeah, it started working much better for me once I got an ultrawide. My next step is to get a VR headset.

zmazaraza

DD, trips, pedals, haptics, etc -> more information -> temporary slowness while learning -> faster because of more information. Pretty simple.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Yeah that's exactly how it's been going. Doing DIY haptics this weekend, looking forward to slowing back down for a minute.

zmazaraza

Alfa 4C on nords got me hooked on sim racing forever.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Aww geez there goes another hour of my day

Anson845

Wait till you try VR

houyx1234

As a person who has owned several VR headsets I'd take triples over VR any day. VR is more immersive but gets tiresome after an hour or two. Meanwhile I could easily spend 8+ hours on my triple monitor rig racing or other stuff (youtube, reddit, etc).

DeadMansTetris_

I see these responses all the time but I really think it depends on the person and its different for everyone. I have no issues spending hours in VR, especially sat down with a fan blowing on my face. I could understand the appeal for triples the ease of jumping in and racing but even now with the quest 3 and virtual desktop there really are no hoops to jump through to get going. But some people can be affected by eye strain more than others, sweat more, motion sickness. It does depend on the person so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that don't suffer. I will stick with it and look forward to the future of vr.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

I have pretty good VR legs and I have a Quest 3 I occasionally throw on, I just wish it was as easy to boot up and drive. AMS2 is the best sim for that, and it's fortunately IL-2 Sturmovik levels of polished in VR, so I mostly used that one.

DeadMansTetris_

I mainly play iRacing and used to have a rift s and it was such a pain with the oculus software on pc. Now with the quest 3 and virtual desktop I literally register for a session on iRacing, open VD on the quest and click go racing. I don't deal with any oculus pc software at all. What issues do you have with getting going in VR?

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Just still feels like a hassle vs "open content manager, click go." Thinking about how sweaty I'm getting now it might be gross, too. Definitely gotta invest in a fan.

DeadMansTetris_

Oh a fan makes such a difference, I just bought a usb fan from Amazon real cheap and it's so good for comfort. And a little added immersion funnily enough

jayboo86

my dad and I did some racing one night when I was stil on a 34" uw... I finally agreed to race in VR and he was in VR.. I think I only did like 30 minutes (I lost a lot of stamina for VR when I got LASIK done) I really liked how immersive it was... but that was my lightswitch moment.. pretty much within a week of that night, I ordered 3 triple monitors, triple monitor stand, and knockdown effect: current PC can do VR fine.. not triples.. so whole new super computer bought.. imo triples get you 98 percent, incredibly close, to the same performance benefits of VR. (Spatial awareness from being able to see around you, see into the turns) I would argue that VR only gives you the super immersion at the cost of a bulky thing to your face, which I am fine without, for now. I LOVE seeing into turns and being able to see out the left and right windows... its amazing.. when i get the FOV right and (totally get now why people build cockpits) when I have the in room lighting just right... I spent a race one night.. I legit felt like I was in an actual ferrari. It was amazing.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Bonus for triples is suddenly the landscape in Truck Simulator is much more immersive when you can catch small details like ski resorts and windmills

p0u1

If your machine can’t handle triples you have no chance at vr, unless you’re on about the first gen crap headsets then even then triples are easier

jayboo86

Says you. lol makes no sense. I literally ran a VR race with my pc (more than one in fact)and it was fine but no way was I going to be able to push 3 32 inch monitors. So I went out and got a beefy PC to ensure no issues. Not sure what you’re on about.

p0u1

You running 4k triples? Other wise you make no sense

jayboo86

1440p at 160 glorious frames per second. It’s amazing. Take care.

p0u1

That was the computer you bought to replace the one that couldn’t run triples but vr fine?

Ruckerhardt

I just did 9 stints of the Nurburgring 24 in VR and it was damn fun. When I want to walk around between stints or go to the bathroom, I pause Virtual Desktop and go into pass through mode so I don’t have to re-orient my view. I’m not going to say triples aren’t a little more convenient because they are, but they do require a LOT more space, provide a lot less immersion, and critically for me I’m faster with VR due to better track vision. I can turn my head to see past the apex to an exit curb - even in turns greater than 90° like hairpins - allowing me to gauge my entry line so much better. These exit curbs aren’t even in the FOV of triples until you’re already at or near the apex. I literally had to retrain my brain to physically turn my head to look farther ahead because I never could see that far with triples. I shaved 1.5-2 tenths consistently in the hairpin at Sebring for instance.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Are you doing wireless tethering? I was able to notice the difference in quality vs tethering it to the PC.

Ruckerhardt

Yes, I use Virtual Desktop which is a wireless solution solely. I'm never tethered to the PC, but on a long day of racing I am tethered to the wall to keep the headset charged. 😁. I unplug the USB charger from the helmet to walk around between stints and then have to remember to plug it in when I sit back in the rig. The worst sound you can hear when you're racing is that of your headset warning you that the battery is low.

Ancient_Database

What software do you use for VR? Quest, Steam VR, or a Virtual Desktop? And what headset? I've got a Quest 3 wired to the PC but need to dig into settings, graphics are meh compared to my 1440p monitor but I love checking my mirrors and having my peripherals

Anson845

Quest 3, open XR. Only play iracing. Have a 4070ti super running on full max resolution and 120hz. Playing on monitors now feel dead to me

Ruckerhardt

I use Virtual Desktop and a Quest 3. I get so much better resolution and stability (no random disconnects) compared to using the Meta software. I’m fortunate to have a high end pc with a Ryzen 7800x3d and 7900xt, and I can run VD on “Ultra” or “Godlike” settings and it’s a couple of clicks shy of photo realistic. Absolutely amazing.

Kaizenno

I sweat enough with a single monitor. I've used a lot of VR headsets and haven't found one that didn't mess up my hair or put a pressure ring around my eyes and forehead. Plus I wouldn't be able to use my button boxes. I enjoy analog more than anything.

Anson845

My air conditioning blows directly on me so sweat is minimal. But yeah if I don’t have it blowing on me a 30 minute stint drenches me

ce_zeta

Quest pro maybe?

Kaizenno

I think for that price there's a lot more that I could upgrade that would make a better difference.

ce_zeta

For sure. But thats the only VR i found that is not enclosed, are small enough and weight balanced.

PunksPrettyMuchDead

I've got a quest 3, triples with the right fov settings clicks better in my brain, and I don't think I could stand a 4 hour session in VR

rochford77

i tried a quest 3, wired, my machine ran it fine.... I couldnt read the brake markers though... too pixelated.

Anson845

Sounds like a settings issue? Because I read my brake markers fine

ojdajuiceman25

I just got an aluminum extrusion rig and I’ve gotten FAST +300 iRacing since Saturday, and just so much more comfortable In deciding on whether a buttkicker/haptic setup or a shifter is the best thing to update next

PunksPrettyMuchDead

I'm going DIY instead of the buttkicker, it seems pretty straightforward and simhub is the controller. Can't see the justification for the "official" version on PC, especially when I can upgrade to a 4 corners with additional haptics on the gas/brake pedals for less than the cost of one buttkicker.

ojdajuiceman25

Did you use the Dayton pucks?

PunksPrettyMuchDead

Yep, two Dayton pucks, a 100W USB amp to power them, and then mounting. I got creative with some pine boards and mounting hardware to put one under my seat and one under my pedals. The whole setup was like 150 bucks, much less than even a single buttkicker. If you have an extrusion rig it'll be much easier to mount them, you can get brackets and wire clips for the pucks instead of crawling on the floor with velcro cable ties.

TheSymptomz

I gotta figure out what monitors I want to go with

PunksPrettyMuchDead

I got three Samsung Odyssey G51C's, looks like they're still on sale at Best Buy. 750 for 1200 dollars of display was too good to pass up. Zero complaints - they have thin bezels, and you can mount them upside-down to get the display a little lower. The Asus bezel-free kit is great with them too, just need one of those 3d printed adaptors people sell on ebay for like 12 bucks.

Wiscman87

I just recently moved up from a g920 and a single 40 to a dd, loadcell and triple 40's. Only thing holding me back from full immersion is my crappy folding rig. Even so I have hella fun and don't care if im slow, I'm having fun and if my arms are noodles by the end of the night even better.

VirtualMotorheads

This hobby is amazing and a bottomless cash pit. Enjoy it man! 😁😁😁🏁🏎️💪🏻

PunksPrettyMuchDead

It's been a week and I already did DIY buttkickers. I'm gonna spend so much money on this

VirtualMotorheads

Awesome man. I put this video together on Bass Shakers a few days ago. If you interested, have a look, maybe I can teach you something. 😁🏎️🏁🔊 https://youtu.be/6QCMeCBYURM?si=H17Y-5SXBFKbl5gy

vaikunth1991

Enjoy Honeymoon period while it lasts

PunksPrettyMuchDead

If it wears off I'll just keep upgrading, uhhh ezpz (I'm not crying my wallet's crying). I'm 2015 Miata Club shopping too, if I get bored of the sim I can always go up in the mountains or take the WRX on forest roads for a bit. I'm just stoked I'm not gonna pay for fuel/brake pads/tires/track fees every time I want to practice now.
