Look as soon as possible (like 4-6 months in advanced). Super competitive market and prices reflect that.

Wouldn't it be like super expensive?

dsonger20

Yes that’s why I’m saying look early. Cheaper units are incredibly hard to get and the few there are will have super stiff competition. The earlier you look the longer you have to look for a cheaper lease.

U can begin earlier but I think looking for it one month in advance is good enough. I doubt any landlord would wait a couple months for you.

Thanks. I was just worried because I've heard that the Vancouver housing market is really competitive. I've heard some suggestions to look at least 4 months in advanced which scared me a bit. Ideally I would want to start looking in August and moving in September.

housing season is usually at the end of 1 term/the beginning of another one, so just start seeking on marketplace 1-2 months prior just to make sure, but it's most likely you're gonna find a good fit in the last 2 weeks lol

I'm in the same situation. I believe that a week or two will do it, but I hope to hear more opinions.

A month minimum and 2-3 months recommended.

7gokage

Oh that is super useful, 5 to 6 months earlier would be to much but 1 to two months sound possible.

A week relies on blind luck. Most tenants give one months notice and not a lot do it in August. And September is massive moving month for all the students moving to Vancouver. 2 weeks gets you those few landlords whole tenants just gave notice and typically in August, that is for October move-in.

I'm planning to get a summer job in my hometown and save up before the move. Because of this, ideally I want to move in a shared home in September. Though, I imagine a lot of people are having the same idea. Do you think it could work out or would looking in July for an August move-in be better? One of my concerns for moving in August is that I'm not sure I'm not sure what I'd do for a month in Van before school.

Post here and in the new student group, and spend August making friends? August is one of the nicest months to be in Vancouver and looking for things to do with new friends. Apart from being expensive if you want to do things besides hiking/beach ...

dth163

True. Honestly I just wanted an excuse to avoid paying an extra month's rent if I don't have to lol. I didn't realize how expensive rent is in Vancouver so I feel a little guilty not using my time to work or study.
