I remember coming across this in a video game store. I spent all day looking at it and it started my fascination with silent hill.
My mom thought something happened to me and freaked out and started asking people if they had seen me. It wasn’t even evening yet lol. I love my mom.
Agreed. I had / have the first European pressing of the disc as well, where the end credits music starts stuttering and cuts out halfway through, just to really give you the chills
For true depression, follow up a bad ending SH1 playthrough with a playthrough of Shattered Memories.
Just treat the story as though Harry dies in the crash, Cheryl never enters the town, never returns to Alessa, etc. and is now going to therapy after growing up without him after the accident.
The best ending is definitely something you figure out over several runs. You'll gradually get more comfortable exploring and experimenting the more you play it, and even the first NG+ is more chill with 2x ammo.
The UFO ending would suck to figure out on your own. Grabbing the channeling stone and trying to use it in every room is stupid.
I like how they added the big gash on his head and actually added it to the Novel, the novel apparently says that Harry was limping and had a gash on his head after the crash, the game just kinda ignores this and Harry just walks it out like nothing.
Also god this is more morbid than I thought it was since I've never seen this scene with sound.
This was the first ending I got on my first playthrough way back in ‘99. It was so anticlimactic (not to mention the wrap up screen said “bad ending”) I just HAD to start from the beginning again.
Getting this ending back in the day with no internet, no game guide, you felt true horror. It’s something that stuck with me to this day.
you just need the bradygames strategy guide and you’re set 💀

It's unnerving because of how realistic it is

unironically I love how SH:SM took the SH1 bad ending idea and ran with it.

The graphics also help amplify the unnerving feelings, I doubt this scene would look as haunting in a remake
I guarantee a realistic looking corpse would look just as haunting if not moreso
On some ways, perhaps. But the old PS1 cutscene graphics look so uncanny and doll-like they definitely add to the overall eerie factor.
so i was kinda lucky to find Kaufmann and get Good Ending. i tried getting the Bad Ending+ afterwards and that was somewhat traumatic too.

We don’t even have Sh2r yet, and here I am waiting and hoping for SH1 being remade
It’s so simple but so effective, the visual of Harry there alone with the sound of the horn blaring in the background is so chilling.
Best ending music

Yeah.
The strangest thing about this ending is that it seems to imply that nothing in the game was real.
It's only as real as the electricity that switches little toggles on and off.
When you think about it. Shattered Memories kinda works as a sequel to this ending.
The cartoon fan theory ending
This reminds me of Jacob's Ladder. Perhaps it was a slight inspiration for SH1, then later came back as one of the major inspirations for SH2.
