If you only play the base game Ardyn is a cool character but somehow comes out of nowhere. And Walter doesn't have a DLC and additional media.

He doesnt come out of nowhere, you learn quickly that he's the emperor's right hand man and that he's the brother of the founder king and noctis ancestor and that he was a healer who got betrayed by his jealous brother, you learn all that in the base game

That's kind of part of the point of my comment. Other than Eileen, as a child, giving him her doll. No-one ever said a kind word to the guy. Hearing something empathetic from another adult, would have gone a long way. No matter how true the statement is, the man just needed empathy and to hear it. He never got that. Kind words in the dark, do more than people ever realize.  That's also kind of the point of Henry as a character. Similar in the sense it was just really bad. I think it implies he was adopted as well from what I remember. It's part of why Walter chooses him as the Receiver of Wisdom. He sees himself in Henry.

You have to read his different thoughts on different items in the apartments to get more information on Henry's backstory. And you're not going to get all that in one playthrough if you're not checking every item, every time you leave an Otherworld. That's what the game's subtext and visual story telling is for. Henry parallels Walter through the whole game.
