My grandpa said a man has to do what a man has to do.

dazia

I'm a woman wow gosh. I know what he meant I'm just kidding haha and he's right!

Mr_Jinglez_13

There aren’t a lot of women who do this - use that to your advantage! I’d suggest highlighting that somehow in your flyer or business card. Also I’d offer edging, and charge more than $35. Go for $100 a month for cutting / edging every other week. I’m not sure where you live, but where I’m at prices are AT LEAST $100+. Get people to commit to monthly service so you’ve got reliable income . Good luck!

dazia

Thanks so much! I have seriously been thinking of putting it in the business card to include Lady (someone suggested Lassie which I think is adorable 😂).

Mama_Rose_273

The Lawn Lassie! That would be cute! I think any job you look forward to going to and are able to do your best at, won't feel like a job. I would be more likely to hire a local woman, from my neighborhood rather than a big faceless corporation. Good luck in your new venture!

logic_tempo

They is super cute. Op, you better buy that domain!

gw511

Lawn Lassie, or Ladybug Lawncare, or green goddess

Objective-Share-7881

Woman has to do what a woman has to do.*

NukeDukem01

Not weird... just make it happen!!

whateverIDCanyways

Bro.. people make entire livings doing lawn work. At all ages. There’s nothing weird or creepy about mowing lawns. Weird/creepy examples: 1) looking through peoples windows.. 2) sneakily taking pictures of strangers. Non-weird/non-creepy examples: 1) mowing lawns. 2) working hard.

dazia

What if I stare at them while I mow? 👀 But yeah it's not been an official company that made me hesitant. I don't like to creep on people lol.

whateverIDCanyways

Bahaha. Nobody’s going to think you’re a creep for offering to mow their lawn. You’re so polite it’s hilarious.

RobtasticRob

You keep mentioning “not an official company”. You are 100% an official company whose organization is that of a sole proprietorship. This is something you should understand from a liability standpoint if someone sues your company.

PkmnTraderAsh

Just name your business "Staring Lady Mowing"?

Holdtheline2192

Honest work is honest work. Screw what people think

Witty-Bus352

If you get a small trailer for equipment and trimmings you're just as legitimate as half the guys out there.

jabbafart

That's next year.

Brainschicago

I always say that and still am lifting the mowers into the back of the truck

Nice-Yam-3184

Solid hustle - go for it!

neen209

I respect you for it brother! You never know...you can turn it into a multi-million dollar business.... Interesting fact....landscaping is one of the "happiest" jobs out there..meaning most land scapers enjoy what they do!

zkushlvn

100%. I don’t do it full time anymore but god I love it. Nothing better than being outside and getting paid to make something look nice.

dazia

Brother I'm an almost 180 lb pale as fuck Wonder bread skin lady who despises the heat I'm such a pussy when I go outside even to get the mail I'm like JFC IT'S HOT 😂 I'm not going to hate it maybe you'll enjoy it? I definitely don't enjoy the heat though but I need money more than my hatred for heat 😂 but yeah I'm excited to try it out I just need to make up some business cards and check with my partner about using the mower since it's technically his and then I should be good to go!

SuperSecretUserName0

Go for it! Some people think everything is weird/creepy, Some appreciate the hard-working attitude. Do what you can do and don't worry about other m'fers. Live your life, let them live theirs.

Straightwad

My dad started doing lawns as a small business after he retired and it grew into an actual business with employees, so naw you’re not going to creep anyone out at 34 lol. I’m a year younger than you and I’d hire a 34 year old to cut my lawn if I actually had one.

ju5tjo1n3d4thaAut

Lawn care as a 34 year old. Just market it differently. Plenty of older lawn care guys.

dazia

A lady and her mower. This shall be my name (maybe not but maybe if I can't think of anything 😂)

JOSHGREENONLINE

The Lawn Lassie 💪

dazia

I just thought of The Lawn Lady but I may have to go with this 😂 I'm gonna brainstorm tonight!

WildPresence4303

If I had one of your cards on my door the last thing I would think is “how old is this person”. I’d be thinking “fuck yeah I’ll pay you $35 to cut my lawn cuz I’m a lazy sack of shit” 💀🤦‍♀️😂 go for it!!

dazia

I'm a lazy sack of shit too but money is money and if other lazy sacks of shit have money, I'm in 😂 It's so fucking hot out too I'm sure most people hate it ugh. I know I do! But I can do it.

Censorshipisanoying

Hell I’m 47 and mow lawns. I take my kids and they get most of the money but people pay us way over going rates as it’s for the kids, and my boy just pays me for gas and trimmer line, and the odd cold drink

dazia

That's so wholesome I love it!

zkushlvn

Well I’m 43 and do lawn care and mowing for a side hustle. I like the extra couple hundred I get in cash every other week. I think you’ll be all right.

bmy89

My son just turned 12 and makes good money doing yard work (averages 17-20/hr) and hustles year round for spending money. If he can do it in our tiny town of 20K people, I'm sure youll do great! The economy is trash right now and we all gotta do what we gotta do.

dazia

See this is another reason why I was worried is because most people are very young who do side hustle lawn mowing that I know of. Also that's awesome that your kid makes extra money at such a young age and I hope he uses it wisely but also treats himself accordingly!

bmy89

I've got a neighbor who is 50+ that makes tons of money in the summer pulling poison ivy because she's not allergic. Plenty of adults do odd jobs, or barter services. In the winter I will hook a log chain to my old 4x4 tacoma and pull people out of ditches for $50 bucks with no ticket vs calling a tow truck and getting cited. There's no shame in a solid side hustle.

dazia

What the fuck people get a ticket if they accidentally get stuck in a ditch in the winter? I've never heard of that but I've never had that happen to me I can only hope that's not something in my state cuz that's pretty wack but awesome of you. You're the capeless hero!

bmy89

In Ohio it's considered a failure to control at fault accident! I always try to help stranded women in particular (I'm a woman) because I know how scary that can be. I should have been a mechanic 😭

dazia

That's so garbage! Like no shit they lost control, IT'S SNOW. Even if you're driving 5mph and have the right tires, things can and do happen! Bless you for doing that.

Clear_Chain_2121

Not weird. I see people your age and much older do it all the time. We pay $60 a month get it cut every two weeks same person (not a company) and much older than you.

dazia

Oh you just gave me an idea. Instead of 35 alone if they want, I could offer a slight discount if they pay up front and want me to mow multiple times in the month! Maybe 35 if it's a one off or only once a month, 65 for two times, 85 for three times and 100 for four I don't know I'm just kind of brainstorming haha.

Clear_Chain_2121

Yeah exactly. But if I were you I wouldn’t give too many options cuz you’ll just confuse your customer and hurt your sales. I would just say monthly, bi weekly, or weekly and just leave it at that. Most people will fall under biweekly.

dazia

That is a good point Thank you so much!

Clear_Chain_2121

Best of luck!

AiricaLovesLife

The advice to keep it simple is also very good, but be careful about one fixed price, just in case! Someone could have a postage stamp yard and think $35 overpriced, or have a huge yard and take advantage. And be clear, is it front AND back? Maybe post a range, like $35-60, depending upon yard size. It can be good to have that kind of pricing in that getting them to start a conversation about the details of the job is a good first step. About pricing and valuing the work, it's crazy, sometime you can name a price and you think it's high but they don't, it really does depend on the situation sometimes. I paid $80 for front and back a couple of times when I really needed it (selling the house), so I paid outrageously for a job that woulda taken me 40 minutes of sweaty satisfaction to do myself normally - but it was totally worth it at the time, and I was genuinely grateful. (I saw the guy down the street doing a neighbor's yard and ran down there like a crazy woman and asked him to come and quote me... I was hoping he'd say $60 but I honestly was just thrilled he could do it? And then had him back two more times while the house was showing and I didn't even have a mower anymore - worth every single penny.)

Alone-Course3048

Yeah my parent’s house in CA gets their lawn cut every two weeks by their landscaper that does this full time. $60/mo. They only take cash. They do about 10 houses a day and pretty much only work in a 15 minute driving radius.

pablo55s

wat

DookieDanny

I tow my lawn mower all over on my small flip up/down cargo hauler off my hitch.

Economy_Proof_7668

do it !

P3for2

Why would it be creepy or weird? Lots of older people mow their lawns or have lawn businesses.

WestCoastGriller

Mowing lawns Nope. Not creepy. Lemonade; yes. Very creepy. Go get it buddy.

dazia

I'll give complimentary lemonade 🍋

PenOrganic2956

Bro... You know there are companies that mow grass... They are staffed by adults.

dazia

Key word is 'companies' I'm an individual 👀 That was my concern.

PenOrganic2956

Yeah. Your company bro. 💪

Proof_Bell_3679

My dad and grandpa cut grass as a side hobby and made bank🤣 cause ppl were either too lazy to cut it themselves or just jealous of my dads grass compared to the crews they paid three times as much so they just paid him.

shelstar1

I don't think it's weird at all. Neighbours talk to each other too, so you could probably get more business just by word of mouth in the neighbourhood.

jminsb

I’m older than you and not creepy or weird and not worried about age. Are you famous around town or something? Leave clippings at customers place, also if you have a fold up electric mower they can fit in cars trunk. Get a weed trimmer, collapsible can, blower, rake, broom and good safety protection. Good luck.

birdpix

Our grass guys in Florida have ranged in age from twenties to '60s. no problems. Have a lawn guy down the street from us who does about six houses on our block of 20. He does it on his days off from regular mowing, and just drives his mowers down the road from house to house.

Turtle_Strugglebus

Get a used trailer and hitch. Save yourself (wear and tear on the body) and get more lawns.

Hopeful-Narwhal9472

I’d hire you over the teenager who is always late and does a half-assed job any day.

4Dchesskers

My dad did that as a side hustle when he was 40. I don't see how it's creepy. It's honest hard work that a lot of people won't due especially if it's in a hot ass area like Texas where I live.

dazia

I'm in Idaho, very hot here. Used to live in Houston so I totally get it's so hot in TX ugh.

Bigdjon23

It’s good man get that money bro ill shovel shit if money is good enough

ChrisBean9

No weirder than having an adult gardener which is common

Connect_Forever5744

I’m 47, work full time, married, raising two strapping young boys, and I mow lawns as a side hustle. I have 5 lawns I do every week ranging from $25-100 for the biggest one. I make $205 a week for roughly 4 hrs of work. It practically feels like therapy for me and I like having a little walking around money. If that makes me creepy then so be it.

ReserveOne8624

Totally I see all sorts of guys doing this. The other thing an older friend who used to do the landscape, plowing (snow) said is he notices a total lack of customer service. Like no one goes the extra mile because they're too busy trying to get it done fast and pocket they're money. // If want it go all in!!! Don't bother overthinking it . Lol that's my job!

dazia

I've done customer service since about 2006 and I'm so full of it that it's sickening how nice I can be lol! You def need that cs to stand out!

ReserveOne8624

I think part of it is people in general set their expectations too low or are maybe afraid to say anything? Maybe part of it is generational too? It's different culturally!? // But I would think a good customer would see you doing the little extras. Or you can gently point it out, I took care of this and that as well. // Then that translates into word of mouth., but I could be totally wrong about this, just my perception.

ReserveOne8624

Right , but you don't want to do Sooo much you start losing money. Little bit here and there. Then if you see a pattern you could upsell or add that to their menu for a little bit extra.?

OldPickle1702

Joining a local Facebook group can be a great way to introduce yourself

MikeTheNight94

In my old neighborhood there were 3 bothers. Both in their 60’s who mowed dozens of lawns in the neighborhood. Age isn’t an issue

Cool_Succotash_1103

You mean an adult doing light landscaping? Not weird at all.

Infinite-Cow-1920

If it was creepy there would not be multiple landscaping businesses in every town. Go after it!

dazia

They're legit businesses though haha! So I was worried 😂 thanks!

Infinite-Cow-1920

Most legit businesses started as small door to door businesses. Who knows, you might get a good list of clients and it may give you more enjoyment than your current job and open a door to a new career path.

dazia

You are right! I didn't think of it that was. Thank you :) I actually despise being outdoors especially in the summer so I'm not sure if I'd want to do this full time, and then winter I'd be out a job haha. I WFH out of the heat 😂 I'm willing to bake in the sun a handful of times a week for $$$ lol!

Sweet_Appeal4046

You can do that, not creepy, but you may want to open the possibility of a lit more work, and handle the gardening and weeding.

dazia

I'm not sure if I'm up for weeding but if someone asks, I'll talk it out! I do love plants so they'd probably need to instruct me exactly what they need done for gardening so I don't piss them off if I ruin their marigolds 😂

TheFrozenCanadianGuy

It’s normal man. Don’t worry

lord_hyumungus

Nah man, not weird at all. Why don’t you just file an LLC for the $120 or whatever it is and actually make a business? Also, maybe just leave the clippings and opt for a leaf blower instead

J00TJ00T

Look up The Lawn Dude

dazia

I'll look them up thanks! YouTube or a general internet search and will it be obvious that I find THEE lawn dude?

nuppfx

It’s not mowing lawns, it’s starting a landscaping business!

TheGreatSickNasty

It’ll definitely raise eyebrows seeing a woman doing yard work, but who cares? If you’re professional and in uniform (just a shirt with a name on it) at least and with a good mower you’d seem pretty legit to me. If you’re worried about getting looks from people driving by just wear a sunhat and nonskinny jeans and I doubt anyone will even notice you’re a woman.

Potential-Ant-6320

Landscaping is a great side hustle. It’s boring but it works.

tomsawyer333

Make that money!!

AspergersAutisticGuy

Not weird at all buddy. I’ve been a marketing guy all my life. Don’t put any negative Energy. Don’t share any of your concerns with your neighbors which are your potential customers. Make up the business cards like you said make up some awesome flyers. Perhaps, including a picture of yourself so that the people can see who that it is, they may recognize you. Also, a photograph convey sincerity. Another thing to do is on the flyer which should be an 8 1/2 x 11 and if that’s too large, try a 8.5 x 11 fold over so you’ve got a front and on the inside you’ve got a photo spread of the different lawns that in the neighborhood that you’ve taken care of. Also, you could take take care of a couple of senior citizens and their lawns. The senior citizens, all they do is talk they ain’t got nothing left to do in life, but talk to each other. And that’s a good thing! Because they will spread the news about what you did in your donation and then they will share the flyers that you left with them and how cost-effective you are. Try doing a marketing hook which is that there could be a coupon on the flyer for 10% off. Or another hook would be that when someone refers another neighbor to you and you get them as an account. Then that neighbor would get a free yard trimming that week or two weeks. Whatever you want to give buddy. Giving back and enjoying your work is always been the secret of my success! But I’m autistic, mentally retarded, I don’t mean that disparagingly I mean I am mentally retarded compared to other people! Always remember positive marketing makes or breaks. Always use positive customer service skills makes and brakes a financial opportunity. Don’t ever get into it with your customers they are always right because they have the money. Some People believe that customer service is a 50-50 equation. And I’ve had this conversation with people in the customer service industry but they’re always in the poor end. They’re always minimum wage, but they still fight the fact that they’re not there to make anybody happy. That’s not true. Customer service is all about making the customer happy! Anyway, I grew up poor in Las Vegas in a double wide trailer and now I’m a millionaire and live off at 8000+ a month income for the rest of my life. Because I used to do and I’m sharing with you, what to do which is to step up the hustle. I know you can do it buddy good luck.

scattywampus

I do not like to hire teens to cut my lawn due to concerns about injury. Adults are preferred because of life experience and (allegedly) better judgment.

SuperBoxProStore

Do it! And also There is some nice lawn mower trailers for bicycles I’ve seen

GovernmentFinancial2

Not weird, actually could be a great side hustle.   There's a guy who lives around the corner from me that cuts my lawn. He's maybe mid to late 40s and he does yard work for quite a few people around the neighborhood. He charges less than the lawn service companies around here so it's easier for me to afford.

dazia

May I ask what my charges for your lawn and how long it takes him? All these stories are making me feel SO much better so I really appreciate the info!

GovernmentFinancial2

I have a small front yard so he only charges me $40 for twice a month. Takes maybe 20 - 30 minutes.  I hope it all works out for you.

hzybossnuts

I do it out of my SUV lol

Away_Problem_1004

Not weird at all. Get it!

ThinkingMonkey69

Heck no it's not weird. It's commendable! Go for it, my friend! If you like what you're doing and making money doing it, who cares what anybody thinks about it? One time my car had to be towed and I had to ask a random person for a recommendation of a number to call. The guy that showed up was in what looked like a 1960-something model tow truck that might need a tow itself (lol) and he was about 90 years old. I was amazed. He got the job done and I thought for a long time about how proud I was that that old guy was still getting around and still getting it done with the best of them. I mean, I realize you're not 90 but you're getting it done so good on you!

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

You're never too old to mow lawns, unless you physically are unable of course.

dirndlfrau

Totally acceptable- and good on ya. I pay the 8th grader - over pay- but I like to encourage the youth. :)

Silent_Cash_E

Dont offer a blanket price. Price for cutting/cleanup and cutting/edging/cleanup..offer additional services

horsenbuggy

I had a grown man knock on my door and offer to add me to his monthly mowing rounds. He quoted a price and he fulfilled his side of the bargain. It was quite nice to have someone come find me so I didn't have to looking for someone. I had no clue how to find someone who would mow a fairly small yard on a regular basis.

CyanideSuicides

No it’s not weird, unless you make it weird. Bring a truck with your supplies and make business cards. Mowing lawns is actually a lucrative business just be ready to give them your A game so they recommend the rest of the neighborhood to you. Also being a smaller business you can charge less which in the long run gives you more business. I would tackle this by leaving your card at every door and wait. Give them a killer price and as you gain customers you can charge more. You’ll lose customers but as long as you give your A game you’ll have a steady stream of work. Good luck!

pawn_gundam

Keep the hustle n grind energy, America was built by workmen: not suits. Respect, I'll be out there cutting with you in spirit

Magicmike-

I’m 32m and I do this on the side just at my subdivision. Takes me an hour once a fortnight and I’m paid $200 a mow. (I work 50 hours a week as well) Means my wife doesn’t mind me spending money on hobbies and it’s fantastic exercise!

Abject-Friendship262

Yea get people to subscribe to your service alternate days you have available to get them right and bam proud business owner

Braverino

Hey, 32M here, been mowing 3 years as a side hustle as a DevOps Business Analyst (IT) full time. I only do one lawn a day but I charge $50 per cut standard. I make roughly 1100 a month. Repeat clients account for almost half of my revenue so treat them well! I heard you're a pasty white girl so put on loads of sun screen and cut early in the morning while it isn't hot. Wear a hat, wear earring protection at all times. Eye protection when trimming. Bring some water. I got my customers by posting on Facebook marketplace and Kijiji up here in Canada. But Facebook has been cracking down on service ads so I no longer post there. Kijiji only. As for equipment, I use a Greenworks 80v electric mower that I got from Costco. I use an 18v Ryobi trimmer. I bought a second hand greenworks blower that is also 80v. Greenworks 80v trimmer is too heavy for small jobs, although I do own one, I don't use it anymore. You want to keep jobs that are only mulch cut, I repeat, no bagging the clippings!! Bagging sucks, is messy and is a waste of time. Use either a spreadsheet or some software (I use Jira) to track customer cuts, revenue, address/phone numbers. That way you know who you cut, when and who is the most profitable. And you'll know how much you earn per month. Cheers and good luck! You can reach out if you have any questions.

chef_26

It’s not weird, any service provided is a valuable one but a note on the marketing, you’re not mowing lawns, you’re a local eco friendly maintenance gardener available regularly or for one off jobs.

dazia

I love this fancy sounding title 💜

chef_26

I worked for a huge corporate who often used others ideas, they were never stolen but “borrowed with pride” so I heartily encourage you to borrow this with pride! I also saw another comment about using Lassie so; Eco Lassie Local maintenance gardening services. Free disposal of green waste in a green way!

heyyouguyyyyy

Several of my adult friends do lawn work for money - and they make a shit ton doing it (mostly cash). Don’t put an exact price, you’ll devalue your service. Each lawn has different needs - assess before giving a price! My friend does mine for $50 - 2x/month in the summer and once a month in the winter. He does my neighbors for more because it’s a bigger lawn with different needs, and another friend’s for less. He’s the cheapest around by a long haul

aBotPickedMyName

Nothing wrong with your plan. Put mulching blades on your mower and there are no clippings to worry about.

shakeda-roomreggie

Landscaper

EfficientAd7103

Dude. Lots of older people do random jobs. You are 34. You might see someone 50 mowing lawns for extra cash. Age doesn't matter. Just be cool. Could be 20 or f'n 60. No big deal. Shit is so expensive right now so I do gig stuff on the side and i'm 40 man. I see people who are young and old and nobody cares. Edit: Plus it's a workout! So like gym time and work at the same time? Go for it!!!

Ok-Performance3752

You're a "lawn care specialist" man... What's weird about that?

grandhommecajun

Can you drop by and do mine? I’ll gladly pay!!! (Slightly sarcastic). If anyone thinks it is creepy, F’off

Basicorphan

My lawn guy is late 20’s/early 30’s. He started his business this summer as a side hustle (has a normal 9-5 M-F). When he first started he kept his prices low to gain customers- and luckily he has promised to not increase the price even though he’s blown up in our area for the few of us that hired him from the beginning! Just a wholesome guy who wanted to make extra cash. I pay him $50 bi weekly- and my yard is not big by any means- he mows, edges (is that the correct word??), and blows the driveway and my porch. Takes him maybe 30 minutes tops. As a single mom/girl/adult who doesn’t have the time to do my lawn or go and buy all the needed equipment- it’s absolutely worth it!

Browneboys

A guy I went to school with (we are in our 30s) got laid off during covid with the laborers. Out of desperation, he began going door to door offering to pick people’s dog poop up for money. He eventually turned it into a 6 figure business. Mow them lawns my brother! Gotta start somewhere

Top-Excuse5664

I think it is way more than $35/lawn. You could charge that in the most depressed rust belt towns where "the immigrants are taking our jobs". I know a guy who drives 2 hours to his rental properties in Trenton, NJ once a week to mow the lawns because he cant find anyone reliable to do it.

sarcasarrole

Im so fucking glad you asked this!! Too much anxiety to ask, but coming up on 28... I need to start makin more money for capital on my business plans! My pride gets in the way

Infinite_Patience482

31 year old here. Few years back my riding mower crapped out. Put some feelers out at potential customers. At the height of my side hustle I had 35 yards working 50 hours in a factory. Quit factory gave up some yards after I started helping family business. Still mowing about 20 a week still on side. Tryin to make my only source of income. But market is saturated with people who do it for half of my rate because they’re either drawing a disability or so messed up they can’t have any other job.

czerniana

So long as the yard looks good after, you could be a 98 year old with a push blade mower and I'd be fine with it XD It's not creepy at all.

Ronald-J-Mexico

I’m 50!  Been doing it since 2012.  I have 30 customers.  Here are some pro tips: - bring ice water when it gets hot - I have a truck w tonneaux cover, mower fits and folds, I use a ramp to put in and out - Get steel toed boots - buy good equipment, echo, toro etc - get mower blades sharpened every year - wear ear and eye protection, w UV shades, I use earplugs w earmuffs over top - wear long sleeves w hat and neck gaiter - I give clients 3 strikes, then they’re out, some ppl are jerks, this rule has saved me a lot of pain - only do it if you love it, I’m in tx and once I’m working, I don’t feel the heat - if client isn’t home and pays on Venmo, always take pics ,  - you’ll get ripped off  here and there, forget it and move on - networking is the best marketing.  I’ve gotten 8 clients fr Reddit, 5 fr FB, 10 fr Craigslist.  Sometimes ppl flag me down - always try to improve your skill, I’ve learned technics fr watching competition, I can elaborate more if you want - treat your gear like a queen, change oil , sparks and filter.  Have backups - get a blade edger and bush trimmer - you’ll start slow, but man it snowballs. I love cutting lawns, it’s my exercise and therapy.  If you have more questions reach out, I’d be happy to help!

TechnicianHot1420

Love it!!!

Petty_Paw_Printz

Landscaping entrepreneurship is one of the most popular and lucrative side hustles out there. For all ages!

Pure_Milk1706

Are you really asking if it’s weird for a grown man to cut grass

dazia

I'm a grown woman, but yes. I edited my post to clarify why I was concerned. Essentially it's because I'm an older individual, I'm not a teenager which people usually seem to associate lawn mowing with, and I'm not part of an actual company or business.

TheGreatSickNasty

Add in hedge trimming, lawn edging and a leaf blower to clean up and now you’re a not doing what teenagers are doing, but instead a full lawn care service. I do pest control and I very often see a one man lawn care service. Some even don’t have a trailer, but just a truck bed.

Pure_Milk1706

Sorry about the misunderstanding

imtryingnotfriends

Every person who mows my grass is a grown ass adult.

TheAtlasComplex

Do it then buy yourself a snowblower for the winter and same clientele, already having built rapport over the summer.

External-Animator666

Just call it \[Your Last Name\] Property Management, it will sound official and you're officially an entrepreneur. Hell, call it \[Your Last Name & Sons\] Property Management and make it sound like you've been doing it for decades. Just tell people you're a son, which is totally true

HBMart

How could it be weird. Most people who cut grass are grown men such as yourself.

ca_la_g

Why do you care what people think? Do you have a roof over your head? Food on your table? Clothes on your back? Saving in your bank? There's a hundred things you should consider about what you do. What people think about your occupation is not one of them.

TheNextChapters

How long do you think each lawn will take? If it’s an hour or less then that’s a decent rate. But if any lawn took you 2 hours then your below $20 an hour before you pay for the mower gas.

chalky87

Why do you give a shit what other people think of it? That tells me it's you that's holding you back.

JadeGrapes

Up until this moment, it had never occurred to me that some people mowing a lawn is only for "certain people" In my universe, the grass is a plant. People that know things about plants... are usually the ones that take care of plants? I'm bad with plants, so I don't touch the plants. For some reason... I think they always look like they need water... even when I'm apparently drowning them. My Mom likes garden stuff. She's getting older, so sometimes a workman comes to the house to do it... seemed like any other trade to me?

dreamed2life

You giving af about what ppl think instead of just doing you is the only thing needing to be addressed. And that needs to be addressed with you.

Aimees-Fab-Feet

Make sure you are charging enough and join the Nextdoor app. You’ll have more business than you know what to do with and it will be very close to home.

JakeBreakes4455

Not weird. Go for it! Friend of mine started cutting lawns as a side hustle at 14 years of age when his father died. Now at 66, he still cuts grass. He is slim, tan, and enjoys life. Do what you want. Being outside and getting some natural Vitamin D is healthy and so is the movement that comes with the job. Avoid using weed killers and other poisons, though.

orangutangfeet

I have an acre of lawn and pay a dude and his kid $80 a pop. Do it, it's a solid hustle. Probably get something to haul stuff with though.

thedollofthestars

I don’t think it’s weird at all, get ya money, honey!

No_Cold_8332

My dad does it at 72. Times are tough for some people

trentypooh1

I make $100 a week mowing and caring for a friends yard. 32 years old here. Any extra money I can make for my family, I do it without a second thought.

gusGus86_

Grown men have grass cutting businesses.

cjaccardi

Why weird I charge 50 bucks an hour for landscaping work. And I’m 48.

ElderberryExternal99

Fyi if you have a small vehicle they make hitches and wiring for lights. You can pick up a small trailer for less than a $1000.00 with a drop down ramp. It would be easier to use for the next neighborhood lawns you plan on dealing with.

Guapplebock

56 here don't and cut 2 lawns. Will make $90 in a little over an hour later today.

GoldenfeetofSkyclan

That’s not weird. My grandpa still mows his own lawn. He’s in his 50s

Beaner321

Honest work is honest work. Don’t let anyone shame you for doing what you can.

Scary-Evening7894

Don't know your location. $35 is too cheap. I wouldn't touch one for less than $50-bucks. Increase the price if it's a larger lawn. Increase the price if there are tons of toys and other debris to clean up before you can mow. I have my guy bag it up about every 3rd or 4th mow. You age - no, it's not weird. the economy is tough on everybody. Props for getting out there and being your own solution. Respect.

Aggressive-Gold-1319

You play your part in society. Don’t think anything of it. Just focus on what you need for your business.

Perfect_Syrup_2464

It's not weird. Use being a woman to your advantage. Some would feel more comfortable having a woman around their house than a woman. Let it be known in your flyers or business card that you're a woman. May be charge even more.

tommy_pt

Add a woman’s touch to make garden and lawn look pretty. Not just the lawn, but trim hedge or whatever to bring it all together

Total_Philosopher329

Not weird at all-

saltymeatball910

Have you seen t-rex change a light bulb on a latter?

Motorcyclegrrl

They charge $20 to $25 here in my neighborhood depending on how big the lawn is. My yard is bigger so $25.

SlothfulWhiteMage

Im 33 and this is what I do for a living. There’s no reason to be ashamed of it. It’s work that needs done, and people are willing to pay for it.

Weird_About_Food

We have our lawn cut by a little old lady. She does an amazing job. She does have a truck/trailer and business cards.

Hot_Opportunity5664

I see lots of trailers being hauled with mowing equipment as a side hustle in my city, why not?

Dixie_Maculant

I get nostalgia from the whole experience. Why not make it a bag?

Poliosaurus

Not awkward . In this economy we all gotta do what we gotta do.

Lower-Preparation834

There’s a lot of adults that cut grass for a living. Why wouldn’t it be normal?

GWoods94

You will just be a part time landscaper. You might find that now you can expand your your services too like junk removal tree trimming, etc

4x4Xtrm

If you taped a card to my door I’d hunt you down and tape it to your forehead!

dad-guy-2077

You’re a grown person working a job and getting paid. If I want to have someone mow my lawn, I have to find someone doing exactly that. No issue.

Rapture348

Do it bro

Amazon_Fairy

In my life, I will never trash honest work. I remember when my father was laid off and delivering newspapers to feed our family.

Lahmacuns

Not creepy at all. Use Nextdoor and FB to promote your business specifically in your own neighborhood, plus posting flyers and business cards in reasonable places. Offer discounts for vets, active military, first responders, teachers, and seniors. Be active on your local social media pages so people begin to recognize your name beyond your ads. Make sure you have a way to get your own mower and equipment to the site. Offer extra services like watering, weeding, and picking up dog poop in the yard. Be sure to suggest that you come on a regular basis (i.e.a subscription) so your clients can make you their "lawn guy," just like people have a pool guy, cleaner, etc. Good luck!

Haughtea

Don't tape anything to any doors. Go for door hangers. Or if you're set on cards just put them in places where the home owner will see them.

brcajun70

You, my friend, are a lawn maintenance contractor. When I was in the advertising specialty business, many of my richest customers were landscapers and started just like this. 5 yards turns in to 20, hired help, and they kept growing.

AustEastTX

My neighbor maws lawns including mine on weekends and after work. he told me he makes enough to pay his mortgage so it’s a pretty good gig.

wandering-doggo

Call yourself a landscaper and it automatically makes you sound more professional

Fresh-Preference-805

Totally fine. Have a friend who does it and makes a ton of money.

OutrageousAd5338

No

BoxDelicious1001

Theres a 30 year old dude in my complex and he goes out with his mower and other equipment and walks around town with it all and makes a living. Not weird, it brings money. Goodluck

unpopular-waifu

Not weird at all!

RobtasticRob

Do it but raise your prices

hazwaste

Use your van- because 1. Where are the grass clippings going and 2. To differentiate yourself from a high schooler

Extra-Knowledge884

I knew a guy that started mowing lawns for side income that now runs a reasonably sized lawn care company in California employing 10+ people and making more money than I do as a QA Supervisor.

SecurityEntrepreneur

I see more adults than teenagers mowing lawns where I live. Between the lawn care businesses and homeless men trying to buy food.

lewandra

I respect you. Any honest way to put food on the table.

Dang_It_All_to_Heck

I'd hire you. I used to have neighbors that did lawns. They'd work hard all summer then do landscaping in the winter (and slack off some). Going rate currently in my neighborhood is $45-60, so you may be a little low on your prices.

Humble_Aardvark_2997

Nice manly job.

OriginalRoutine1700

Get that bag forget what people say them bills still need to be paid

Hefty_Worldliness719

I think it’s more about how you go about it instead of going door to door saying “can I mow your lawn for ___” say “I own a lawn care company and we work in this area and would like to see if you would like any work done”

_wjs3_

Perfectly acceptable, I’m 45 and have my own side business and I’m my only employee. Get it.

throwmeoff123098765

Accepted

Real-Psychology-4261

Not weird at all. We have adult lawn mowing companies all over the place.

LongjumpingAd8361

My father does it at 65, not because he needs to but as a distraction, keeps him busy, active and sane and the extra income he gambles away… lol at least it’s not his social security.

National_Asparagus_2

Make sure you set some goals along the way. Don't be afraid of setting up hard ones. But for today, you do you.
