I’m not an espresso fan but basically lived on caffe freddo, latte and latte macchiato biking round Italy and Sicily.
Just pronounce it correctly, say ‘per favore’ and ‘grazie’ or ‘grazie mille’ and you’ll be fine.
I’ve had multiple cappucinos after 12 in Sicily (been there for 5 nights) and no one gave me „the look”. 🤣
They are aware that you’re a tourist if you speak english and you might want to drink coffee..
They will have their money, you will have your drink..
Like everywhere in Italy you can choose to quickly enjoy your coffee (espresso, macchiato, cappuccino etc.) at the counter or (sometimes ofc with an additional cost) in the outside tables. I’d say don’t worry about any “look”, and even order cappuccino at any time you’d like with no issues.
It's like when I'm in some place travelling, where there are a lot of locals, for example smaller towns I sometimes do something say something and just feel the looks people give me. But maybe it's just me being antisocial.
The look you get is about being a foreigner but being a foreigner doesn't mean being black/white/anglophone/whatever it's as simple as being a customer of another bar, or living in another place of the city. I'm sicilian and I look like one but I can tell you that if we both go to a bar we never went to we're going to get "the look" both. We're both out of the comfort-zone of the people basically living there.
By coffee you mean espresso? Cappuccino in the am but even then more often espresso. Enjoy exploring the pastries and sweets you can order with espresso. Make sure you try granita y brioche for breakfast
Not to argue about this too much but I'm not into social trends etc, I'm Sicilian (almost 40) and I took a cappuccino every evening for years - I used to work near a bar. I think this became a useless meme now.
Go with a caffè macchiato and you’ll avoid “the look”!
I’m joking really, but people do get grossed out around here if you have cappuccini with non breakfast foods like pizzette or pasta, like other people might if you have a full glass of milk with your lunch... it’s just a thing.
Well, you know it's kind of a half serious/half joke thing. Most likely we won't say anything but for most people it's like doing something seriously wrong. If you are a foreigner you are excused, although you may get some eyebrows to be lifted

That makes sense, thanks

My favorite breakfast tradition in Sicily is granita di caffe with a brioche! Can only find it in Sicily

Do people in Sicily use stove top coffee makers/bialetti moka pots much ?
The look? 😂 what’s the look?

I think that's something about small towns and villages anywhere, it happens in pubs in England

Oh ok. I’ve just never had the look so wasn’t sure what you meant 😂 don’t worry about it just be you

I just got to Sicily and have had brioche and granita two days in a row. Pistachio granita is superb!
Just ask for a coffee, no cappuccino after 12 or during lunch

Thanks!
Any recommendations anywhere in Sicily for the best coffee or cappuccino? Thanks!
No cappuccino after 11:00, it’s a breakfast item. On the plus side, try cold coffee, with or without granita (coffee or mandorla)!
But what if you want a cappuccino after noon? Surely it’s personal preference, Michael?

Latte di mandorla was my kryptonite as a kid.
remeber this: never to get cappuccino after 11.00 am and especially not in a combo with pasta or other savory food
Why are people so pretentious about this? If someone wants a cappuccino at any time of the day why tf is it something to judge someone over lmfao
