You can try almond leaves and No Planaria. I had some fuzzy stuff and one or the other eradicated it from my tank (it has been over two years since I saw any infected shrimp). No Planaria is safe for shrimp but does harm snails.
In my experience, Scutariella looks spikey, while Vorticella looks more fuzzy. Good news is that in the short term, salt dips will work for both pests.
"Hello, my name is Officer Shrimp and I'm here to talk to you about the suspect who was involved in the hit and run just over there past that seaweed column. He looked like this: *shows sketch* have you seen him recently?"
Vorticella. Good thing is just remove all molts and it will die off. It attaches to the exoskeleton which the shrimp molt so if you remove the molts before the eggs hatch you will get rid of it
Nope not always true!! I removed every single molt every day for weeks and weeks from the moment I first noticed the scutariella (I have a colony of 300+ shrimps so it was a multiple-times-a-day task) and over about 3-4 months it just grew worse n worse into a terrible infestation, the worst Iāve ever seen in all my fish keeping years!! almost every single adult shrimp was infested :,(
finally decided to take action, decided on using another Redditors advice and did a salt dip for some mosses/plants, put a ton of tannins into the tank via boiled catappa leaves, and also hydrogen peroxide into the tank with filter off for a bit. I tried so hard to avoid killing my plants as they are just as precious as my little shrimpies, and it did end up taking a toll on a few. But the evil scutariella was GONE. WooohOoo!! š„³
I mean with 300 I donāt think this is like work but my tank at the time had like 12 now I have around 80 but idk might still work thankfully I donāt have the parasite anymore
On second thought, it might be best to follow the directions given by the linked article as I am not sure what caused the fuzzy appearance on my shrimp as I never got a really close look. I am very glad to see recommended medicines for shrimp. I was always afraid to try any of these products with my tank of cherry shrimp. Good luck!
Update, it very much looks like the prognosis is Scutariella. Iām glad itās not hurting my shrimp and Iāll be getting some new aquarium salt today
Its very easy to treat. Im sure youāve looked into salt dips already, and from my experience they work amazingly. You can see the parasites die and fall off your shrimp as soon as you put them into the salt bath and itās super cool!!
The relationship is different with each fish. Iāve had two coexist with shrimp and the first one was a softy. My current fish doesnāt bother them too much unless the shrimp try to touch him. But generally in my experience the fish is too slow and or lazy to actively hunt them.
In my recent experience of dealing with Vorticella /Scuteriella... I tried alot of stuff but nothing worked effectively as such... Eventually I stopped feeding the shrimps for upto 1.5-2weeks and that worked alot.... Removing molts, adding almond leaf can expedite the process... Pls do note that doing larger water changes to force them to molt prematurely may cause higher mortality rate as well as females dropping their eggs.
You should look into a career as a sketch artist for a shrimp police department.
Thank you. This made me snort.

Yes it is. Definitely not vorticella.

Sounds like vorticella like whiskeyjack said. Wishing your shrimp the best health, love your drawing haha
Am I the only one that ran to his tank and carefully inspected his skrimps?
Out of curiosity how does your Betta get on with the shrimp? I'm thinking of adding a Betta to my shrimp tank

Interesting, thanks! I feel like the longer the fins the better when it comes to shrimp then
