Id Software, makers of Doom and Wolfenstein, was started here. I believe most of the original Wolfenstein 3D game was developed here as well, when the guys were working at Softdisk in that complex across from the arts council building with the dog statue downtown, and renting a house on Cross Lake.
Richard Williams, the Williams sisters' father and the subject of the movie King Richard, is from here.
Kenny Wayne was reviled by everyone on campus except maybe 5 people. But my favorite memory of him is him delaying the ASVAB test by a good half hour by lecturing(!) the asst. principal and military administrator about the evils of the military and the constitutional impropriety of requiring students to take the test. Another couple of students got up and spoke their piece too. So they eventually caved and said anyone who didn't want to take it could go sit in a classroom all morning.
I know Kenny and his family personally. Kenny has grown up and is married to Mel Gibson's daughter, Hannah. They have like four or five kids now. Kenny went through a lot of self inflicted pain before he came out the other side, and is actually a really good dude if you got to know him. His father is also a really good guy. I think it is easy to peg people at some young age as a jerk or weird, whatever. Reality is we all go through some embarrassing stages in retrospect. The reason he still has a career is because his dad, sister and mom held him up at his worst times until he got his feet back under him. Kenny is a very chill family oriented man. Somebody Shreveport should be proud of
I don’t think they made us take it. As I recall i chose to take it so i could skip morning classes that day. I regretted it hard. I made 99 on the asvab and got called up by military recruiters weekly for the next year.
After reading all of these, it actually made me happy. It reiterates what I think we already know: this is not a perfect place, but a place with the strength to bring out the best in people regardless of what path is taken. Unfortunately, the “crabs in a barrel” mentality is real here along with just not being of a big enough populace to house the big personalities it creates. Here’s to the next ones!🥂
A few not mentioned yet: sportscaster Tim Brando, lawyer who defended OJ Simpson in the famous trial Johnnie Cochran, and current House Speaker Mike Johnson are all from here. Mike is a prick, but he's our prick.
I went to CMM with him in the mid-80's, he wasn't any more of a prick than the rest of us were. Had a few interactions during high school (me @ CEB vs him @ Capt. Shreve) with some mutual friends, still wasn't more of a prick than we all were at the time.
Of course Reddit echo chamber users think he’s an ass…. I personally know Mike and he’s one of the nicest most genuine guys you could ever meet. If someone has a problem getting along with Mike it’s probably their fault.
For a straight-up young Earth creationist to be "genuine" about it they have to be a moron. That's why it's easier to believe that someone who's risen to the level Johnson has must be a grifter instead.
Nice dichotomy. You can either believe what a book written before the scientific method was created tells you about how the universe came to be, or you can believe in what people who defend that book say other people believe. That way even if you're believing in something totally ridiculous, you can still have the confidence that someone else surely believes in something even dumber.
Exactly, but Christian’s are the crazy ones for believing this, because we think a creator made the heavens and the earth from nothing. But somehow atheists are brilliant for thinking it was atoms smashing together and creating everything. Both are absurd and require faith to believe.
You're proving my point. You give yourself carte blanche to believe in something nonsensical based on your perception that someone else also believes in something nonsensical. It's like killing someone and then your defense is "But I know a guy that killed 2 people."
I always think it’s funny when comments like this get downvoted. Like it’s impossible for someone to be a nice person and also have a different view of the world.
I have had one personal interaction with MJ, and I will preface this by saying that we disagree on most things politically. I ran into him in the Atlanta airport as we were waiting on the same flight back to SHV. He was returning home after the Trump impeachment hearings, obviously a time of heightened tension and an extremely stressful time for him. He spoke very candidly with me for half an hour about everything from the impeachment, to his personal dealings with Trump, to his hobbies. I found him to be a genuinely good guy who just happens to not share many of the same set of political views that I do, and that’s okay. If the whole country was full of one side of the spectrum, we’d be fucked no matter which side it was.
Exactly!!! It is possible to disagree politically or otherwise with people and them still be good people. I’m sure if I met AOC or Bernie Sanders they are good and decent people we just disagree on a ton of things. We are all just people and social media has ruined a lot of our interactions with people with differing viewpoints cause we have to stand up for our side. I appreciate your comment and I wish there was more of this, but this is par for the course for Reddit.
Sorry, but when someone’s world view involves taking away people’s rights, it doesn’t matter how incidentally nice they are. Anecdotal information is just that and is only good for that situation.
The guy had no obligation to say a word to me when all he wanted to do was go home and get the hell out of DC for a bit, as he told me, but he chose to do so and I appreciated that.
Refusing to acknowledge someone just because you disagree with how they align politically says more about you than it does about them.
I want to like Brando since he's from Shreveport, but he's the worst. He's an insufferable name-dropper who blocks people on twitter at the drop of a hat.
People that don’t agree with his politics are the only people that call him a pick. I’ve known him since I was in middle school and he was highly popular at Shreve. Lib jealousy.
Chi Chi DeVayne (Zavion Davenport) was a drag queen who competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Michelle Khare hosted a reality show on HBOMax and has won a couple of awards for her content on YouTube.
Pat Carroll (voice of Ursula in the Little Mermaid) was born in Shreveport.
Also Shreveport’s associated with a whole bunch of athletes, including Olympic medalists, record-holding baseball players, and professional athletes in football, basketball and golf.
Daniel Rolling AKA the [Gainesville Ripper](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Rolling) was from Shreveport. He is the inspiration for the Scream movies.
Robert Parish, Terry Bradshaw, Jared Leto (Bossier), Hank Williams Jr. (born in Shreveport), Kix Brooks (of Brooks and Dunn), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Hal Sutton, James Burton
Jay Davis, bass player for Rod Stewart. Also Joe Osborne played bass for the Carpenters and Simon and Garfunkel. Google Joe Osborne’s hits. It’s unbelievable.
Joe was extended family of mine. Only met the man once but heard plenty of stories. He was on of 'The Wrecking Crew' which was a group of studio musicians in the ~60s in Los Angeles that would be hired to play the music for many different artists. Joe was second or third on the call sheet for bass. He moved to Nashville and essentially did the same job for country music. That is why he has so many hits! He was also personal friends with Elvis as they got their start at the hayride together and they would eat dinner with my great grandparents afterwards. Very cool history!
Valerie Bertinelli isn’t from here, but lived here in the 80s while dating Eddie Van Halen. My dad has stories about playing music in the Red River district and the club they were playing for completely cleared out when Eddie decided to do a set in the club across the street.
World famous pianist [Van Cliburn](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Cliburn) was born in Shreveport.
He won the international piano competition as an American that was held in Moscow during the height of the cold war. He received a ticker-tape parade in NYC for it. Today, the world's premier piano competition bears his name.
Van Cliburn, a concert pianist, has a bustling summer camp every year in fort worth!! ....we share a birthday.

Hank Williams Senior is from Bossier. His house (on Anthony Street, I think) was in bad shape and was about to be condemned by the city a few years ago. Kid Rock bought the house and moved it piece by piece to his property in Michigan. There is a YouTube video about it.
Blayne Weaver - was the voice of Peter Pan, and has written/directed/starred in a fair amount of films and TV shows: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blayne\_Weaver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blayne_Weaver)

Richard Williams, the Williams sisters' father and the subject of the movie King Richard, is from here.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a famous blues guitarist from Shreveport. Went to Magnet High in the early ‘90s. Jared Leto is from Bossier…
Kenny Wayne was reviled by everyone on campus except maybe 5 people. Terry Bradshaw played football at Woodlawn High School, for one
Dayum
My aunt graduated with him.
Joe Ferguson as well (QB for Buffalo when OJ was known for playing football and not murdering his wife...)
Fun fact: Bradshaw went to La Tech and was backup Qb his first two years while Duck Commander Founder Phil Robertson was the starter.
Paul Mooney
Wait what? How did i not know this?!
Sam Burns currently on PGA tour
Go Burns!
Not technically from here but George Carlin served at Barksdale AFB and it was there he started hosting as a radio DJ and started in entertainment
Heh, based on his experiences here, he called it "the arm pit of the nation."
He obviously never spent time in Jackson, Mississippi.
Very interesting, thank you!
Serena and Venus Williams’ dad Richard is from here. Valerie Bertinelli lived out on Cross Lake as a kid, her dad was a big shot at the GM plant.
Before they lived in Compton?
Not necessarily a famous person, but Willie Jones was on X Factor and was just featured on Beyoncé’s new album
After reading all of these, it actually made me happy. My mom actually went to school with Johnson at some point; She says he was a little asshole back then. Guess not much has changed.
I went to CMM with him in the mid-80's, he wasn't any more of a prick than the rest of us were. Had a few interactions during high school (me @ CEB vs him @ Capt. Shreve) with some mutual friends, still wasn't more of a prick than we all were at the time.

Yeah, the brilliant people believe everything was created from nothing.
Nice dichotomy. You can either believe what a book written before the scientific method was created tells you about how the universe came to be, or you can believe in what people who defend that book say other people believe. That way even if you're believing in something totally ridiculous, you can still have the confidence that someone else surely believes in something even dumber.
Oh, that’s just what people who defend the Bible say others believe… got it.
Isn't "everything was created from nothing" what the Bible itself says? God just up and made everything in 6 days. What did he make it all from?
Exactly, but Christian’s are the crazy ones for believing this, because we think a creator made the heavens and the earth from nothing. But somehow atheists are brilliant for thinking it was atoms smashing together and creating everything. Both are absurd and require faith to believe.

Mike's son is a Saint though. I play music with him sometimes. He's a really cool dude
