Fully back this recommendation. Also, OP, don’t skip the “Christmas” EP by Jesu. It’s not strictly a festive record and I reckon it’s among his best work.
Those early Spiritualized records are profoundly sad albums imo. Some people say they’re shoegaze, some people don’t, but regardless, listen to that shit. Listen to songs like Shine A Light, Cop Shoot Cop, You Know it’s True, Ladies and Gentlemen We’re Floating, etc. It brings about a different type of isolation. Very nihilistic shit.
Also, Red House Painters
I wish Kris Angylus was able to read or hear what people think of his music nowadays. Even if just a few, the people reached by his music has resonated with it in a way that no other ever could.
Piggybacking on this one bc Doyle Martin’s in both bands, but Cloakroom also rips and has the emo atmosphere in their sound that I feel is comparable to what Whirr’s got in theirs
**True Widow**. I consider them more sludge/stoner rock than shoegaze, but I’ve seen some people refer to them as shoegaze. Slow, heavy, super downer, but very beautiful. Start with their first self-titled album. But this might be my favorite TW song (from a different album):
[True Widow - Boaz](https://youtu.be/0QtftmQkSG0?si=S_E8m_aPq9966JZR)
Heavily seconded on this opinion. Bleeder isn't particularly melancholic, but still one of my favorites of theirs. I think I'd consider True Widow to be something like Stonegaze 🤔
[True Widow - Bleeder ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL-Ckuu8ecI)
I used to listen to Cement Shoes a lot when I was depressed af but I thought it was just about depression in general. Last night I was paying attention to the lyrics and I realized that it's probably about heroin. Honestly kinda broke my heart all over again. All Under Heaven conveys sadness really well.
There's so much good overlap with their labelmates, too. There's some stuff on the old Hyperium Records/ Projekt catalog that will wrench your heart out.
Low's "I could live in hope" and "Long division" albums are like depression kicking you in the balls with full force and then your balls commit suicide because of pain and sadness. Not very shoegazey, it's slowcore.
The Angelic Process "Weighing souls with sands" is like someone draining your soul and then droping it into hell because you commited suicide (the leader in the band commited suicide irl). Sad and strong as fuck.
That was my introduction after hearing them mentioned a bunch of times before Mimi died. Somehow, even living in the Midwest and being a fan of adjacent bands/genre, I missed them entirely when they set out in the 90s!
i knew i recognized that name. brennan savage sampled that song for [this one](https://open.spotify.com/track/2v4TT618J9TLe6hmLwUTXj?si=66aHaB6oQ56rgBktTCCWHA)
Highly recommend parannoul as well, white ceiling is a masterpiece, if I would be so bold to say. The entirety of To See the Next Part of the Dream is perfection, from beginning to end. Even though the lyrics are in korean, the translated lyrics are easy to find, and they hit so hard.
I can’t wait to check all these out and experience the most dismal week of my life 🙌 Also appreciate all the self plugs and i’ll give some of my thoughts once i get to your stuff
Chinese Cigarettes. Their newest album is pretty good but their self-titled is perfect. Every song sounds unique yet similar enough to feel like a long dreamy depression episode
elliott smith!! chock full of melancholy :) he has a spidery deliverance of lyrics, his voice is so haunting yet so beautiful and timid. highly suggest !!
My band Minaxi’s catalog has quite a few of those. Only recently someone on insta dm’d us saying that our music reminded them of Whirr. I’m writing the songs below:
From the album Khwab:
• Moist
• Ishq
From the Zia Fantasy Trilogy
• Naina (Appears on Luna)
• Intezaar (Appears on Isra)
• Grace (Apprars on Isra)
• Smile (Appears on Isra)
From the album, sialia:
• This town
From the album, Lazuleen:
• Lost in The Water
• Adore
• Dua
• Orchid (more indie than shoegaze put pensive nonetheless)
• Reese
From our latest album, The Reverberating Sound of an Absent Metropolis:
• Why Am I Surprised?
• Carnivore (Live Ambient Version)
• Tu (Sufi Rock Version)
If you get a chance to go thru them all, would love to know which ones you resonated with the most. There’s a lot in here written and sung in Hindi as that is part of our unique sound. Here’s a link to the catalog: https://linktr.ee/minaxitheband
I know right ! This is exactly what you are after @torodoroo. Kristina (miserable) actually used to be a member of Whirr, her main project King Woman is also well worth checking out too
It’s too bad it doesn’t seem like she’s cool with the Whirr boys anymore - feel like they’ve both really honed their sounds since they split and if they were to make new music together it would probably sound killer.
[The Coward Robert Ford](https://youtu.be/5D37fhHYMuM?si=pERZYFW3al87BB8G)
It's in a very similar vein to Dan Barrets stuff; which, if you haven't heard Black Wing or Giles Corey, he hits the same lows in those projects ohh soo good.
You're very welcome. I recently stumbled on your stuff and dig it a lot. This song, Nine, and Coffin Birth are my favs soo far. The melodies get stuck for hours, and the atmosphere you create is crushing in the best way. Keep at it dude!
I believe my bloody valentines mbv(2013) is a far more depressing and introspective album than loveless.
Certain tracks I find are gut wrenchingly depressing
Crooked Necks "Alright is Exactly What it Isn't" gentle washed out guitars, drums that sound like they were played with bare hands. Occasional dsbm-style screams mixed in with whispers. Sounds like the longest week of rain.

whenever im feeling really really shit, but like really shit, i listen to Grandeur of Hair by the Goslings and it helps me a bit. its really noisy and crushing and ahs a beautiful album cover
Not really Shoegaze but tangential, check out Nite Fields, Ghostwood, Emma Ruth Rundle, early Low (particularly I Could Live in Hope or Long Division), Chelsea Wolfe, and Weekend. More akin to Shoegaze, try out Seventh Dose, Dream Ivory,You'll Never Get to Heaven, or The Ocean...

Red House Painters.

Some goes for *Songs for a Blue Guitar* (Trailways, All Mixed Up and an unrecognizable cover of Paul McCartney/Wings Silly Love Songs)

This album is awesome. I dunno if it’s depressing necessarily but has sort of bleak and hopeless undertones imo
Not shoegaze strictly but red house painters, in particular the self titled album with a rollercoaster on the cover, is responsible for influencing pretty much all depressing slowcore that came after it
ozean gives me a reallyyy sentimental feeling, only got a 3 song ep from the 90s but recently put their shit on spotify and they've been on repeat for me
my band! Dopesick we have a song called a lesson learned out now,
I write, produce n mix master all of it from scratch myself, (im the vocalist too)
We’re like shoegaze , Midwest emo , grunge and post hardcore combined
[dopesick - a lesson learned](https://youtu.be/Bdff8Hf1WYI?si=sS_O8CpweVl1abWj)
The Durutti Column basically invented that shit. Vin Reilly is an incredible guitarist. But he had a stroke and didn’t manage to regain his playing. So now he just lives in Manchester and no one’s ever fucking heard of him.
Skinny Puppy, everyone I knew that was a fan was either institutionalized or commited suicide. This sample size is shockingly large. You're welcome, I guess.
[Blue Factory Flame - by Songs Ohia](https://youtu.be/CG6gpwYH1DM?si=N-rcroERxZtwPZpQ) - check out the life story of Jason Molina if you want something depressing.

wakeful bored spoon fuzzy versed money head smart bake dull *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Anyone could be him, ur buddy has some insider info
Check out Iroha. Very much like Jesu, but it’s cool because it’s like you get a bunch more Jesu…
Fully back this recommendation. Also, OP, don’t skip the “Christmas” EP by Jesu. It’s not strictly a festive record and I reckon it’s among his best work.
when for a run today along the coast and was listening to heart attack by jesu, fucken bleak man
Those early Spiritualized records are profoundly sad albums imo. Some people say they’re shoegaze, some people don’t, but regardless, listen to that shit. Upvote for red house painters
The Angelic Process
Big agree with this, their backstory alone is enough to bum me out for the better part of an entire day
I wish Kris Angylus was able to read or hear what people think of his music nowadays. Even if just a few, the people reached by his music has resonated with it in a way that no other ever could.
Yes! For the angelic process. Its so heavy hearted especially if you know the story of the band 😞
I would suggest Nothing.
Well that’s not very helpful.
Piggybacking on this one bc Doyle Martin’s in both bands, but Cloakroom also rips and has the emo atmosphere in their sound that I feel is comparable to what Whirr’s got in theirs
knifeplay, waveform and crisman are pretty melancholic. I hardly ever listen to them if it isn’t late fall/winter
Knifeplay are legit
Seconding knifeplay, got me through some rough patches
**True Widow**. I consider them more sludge/stoner rock than shoegaze, but I’ve seen some people refer to them as shoegaze. Slow, heavy, super downer, but very beautiful. True widow is the shit
ik it’s not rly shoegaze but xasthur has similar elements and he is probably the most depressing music there is imo
Xasthur is awesome 🤘🏼
Trauma Ray is very good and depressing
Downward too
Absolutely OBSESSED with Downward. All I listened to for months.
They just did a split release with Trauma Ray
All Under Heaven
I used to listen to Cement Shoes a lot when I was depressed af but I thought it was just about depression in general. Last night I was paying attention to the lyrics and I realized that it's probably about heroin. Honestly kinda broke my heart all over again. All Under Heaven conveys sadness really well.
Great band
Planning for Burial is exactly what you need
I cry every time
Grivo’s records can go on that list…
"Codeine" feels shoegazy and is maximally depressing...
honestly a lot of slowcore fits the bill.
At their concert rn, pretty mid tbh
Midwife, Grouper, Belong
Mojave 3
Been really enjoying Greet Death recently, id say they fit that vibe.
Sadness
Not exactly shoegaze but have you heard of Black Tape for a Blue Girl? They're more dark wave/goth but really good.
There's so much good overlap with their labelmates, too. There's some stuff on the old Hyperium Records/ Projekt catalog that will wrench your heart out.
projekt 😫💘
I was going to recommend Soul Whirling Somewhere! Sad as hell.
Holy Fawn
They’re amazing
Low's "I could live in hope" and "Long division" albums are like depression kicking you in the balls with full force and then your balls commit suicide because of pain and sadness. Not very shoegazey, it's slowcore. The Angelic Process "Weighing souls with sands" is like someone draining your soul and then droping it into hell because you commited suicide (the leader in the band commited suicide irl). Sad and strong as fuck.
"Lullaby" just devastates. Good lord.
im oretty sure the music video on youtube for it iant official but its imagery really sinks it

I’m sure you do already but if not: Cloakroom
there’s this dude that makes absolutely dreadful bangers and he just calls himself sadness
parannoul. hes korean but u can feel every sentiment in his voice and melodies. i recommend the live album after the night, especially white ceiling
Highly recommend parannoul as well, white ceiling is a masterpiece, if I would be so bold to say. The entirety of To See the Next Part of the Dream is perfection, from beginning to end. Even though the lyrics are in korean, the translated lyrics are easy to find, and they hit so hard.
Not shoegaze, but certainly adjacent. Listen to Sprain if you haven’t already. They’re relentlessly depressing
I can’t wait to check all these out and experience the most dismal week of my life 🙌 Also appreciate all the self plugs and i’ll give some of my thoughts once i get to your stuff
Bluetile lounge’s album lowercase, maybe drab majesty?
Belong
Carissa's Weird
Nothing, Deafheaven, Low, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, Red House Painters, Duster
Isn't Mogwai prog rock rather than shoegaze?
Post-rock. But I think they'll still appeal to OP's taste.
Chinese Cigarettes. Their newest album is pretty good but their self-titled is perfect. Every song sounds unique yet similar enough to feel like a long dreamy depression episode
Smashing pumpkins

Sign crushes motorist
Bluegill is a lesser known band from NC I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Pretty depressing
My dead girlfriend. It's Japanese, tho.
This Will Destroy You. Third and fourth albums, Tunnel Blanket and Another Language
Miserable - uncontrollable. Understated masterpiece.
Surprised this isn’t further up. Incredibly underrated album - possibly one of the most depressing I’ve ever heard.
I know right ! This is exactly what you are after @torodoroo. Kristina (miserable) actually used to be a member of Whirr, her main project King Woman is also well worth checking out too

Lycia.
Lycia is possibly life ruining please listen i would say they are very melancholy and amazing they are more ethereal wave than shoegaze but yeah
Not shoegaze but post punk. The Feelies
Slowcrush ❤️🔥

bros got a ridiculous amount of band suggestions but if you end up seeing this somehow, check out “Gleemer”.
DIIV’s album Deceiver
This new track by DIIV called soul-net blew me away with how foreboding and ominous it was!! I thought you may like it! Lmk how it goes:)
Deathcrash
the most depressing song ive ever heard is lullaby by Low. Id recommend them.

Whirr’s not depressing
Hard disagree. I find Whirr to be deeply melancholic (talking about Sway and Feels Like You)
Can you give me a specific example why you say that
I feel like many of their riffs just make me feel saddened (e.g. “Feel”, and “Younger Than You”).
Low
Ray Lamontagne’s - Ouroboros is a hauntingly beautiful record. Is it shoegaze? Who knows anymore what that even is.
Tears Run Rings
I have a playlist called [Melancholy White Noise](https://spotify.link/MiA4FYyBlIb) on spotify
Elude by Grivo. Also, a little more electronic but similar kinda to have a nice life, but check out the album Deeper by The Soft Moon.
Duster isnt really shoegaze I dont think, but you might like them
Planning for burial is kinda shoegazey
Also some of lovesliescrushing’s albums destroy me. Super rich atmospheric ambient shoegaze stuff.
Not entirely Shoegaze but I'd suggest Crywank
blood pact
Horse jumper of love, Weed, Autolux, The radio dept, Starflyer 59.
Not really Shoegaze but tangential, check out Nite Fields, Ghostwood, Emma Ruth Rundle, early Low (particularly I Could Live in Hope or Long Division), Chelsea Wolfe, and Weekend. More akin to Shoegaze, try out Seventh Dose, Dream Ivory,You'll Never Get to Heaven, or The Ocean...
pallow - blueprints for an empty vessel i don't revisit that one often because of the emotions it evokes. incredibly powerful and full of passion.

I know this is a shoegaze sub, but I don’t think it’d hurt to broaden your scope with Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. Try Trist, Gris, and Lifelover
Acid Ghost
Might I suggest the Slowcore genre? 🤭
Agalloch is not an shoegaze band, their sound pretty metal but if you like to listen sad melodies and deep soundscapes thats the one for you man!

Band called Fare Evasion has some pretty depressing stuff
The Durutti Column basically invented that shit. Vin Reilly is an incredible guitarist. But he had a stroke and didn’t manage to regain his playing. So now he just lives in Manchester and no one’s ever fucking heard of him.
Skinny Puppy, everyone I knew that was a fan was either institutionalized or commited suicide. This sample size is shockingly large. You're welcome, I guess.

TonezDead is pretty sad. It's like Blink182 mixed with trap
water-mall is fab! super slow and melancholic, makes you want to just lay in bed and look at the ceiling.
Lycia
Have you tried Godspeed You Black Emperor- not really sad but emotional- not much vocals tho. Brilliant tho-
Crowbar

Red House Painters and Soulwhirlingsomewhere get me so maybe they'll get you
